Last March, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket into space from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It carried more than 40 payloads on board, including a satellite called MethaneSAT, which was designed to track methane emissions around the globe. Cutting methane emissions is a critical step toward reducing the rise of global temperatures that climate change is spreading to communities. In this episode, we have two stories about how data centers – and the AI they enable – are helping to mitigate the invisible threats of heat and air pollution around the world, particularly for vulnerable populations. From satellites to tree canopies, we ask how AI can help protect human health, reduce air pollution, and temper the urban heat island effect in our cities.Guests: Mansi Kansal, Cool Roofs product manager at GoogleDr. Monica Bharel, clinical lead for public sector health at GoogleKarin Tuxen-Bettman, Google Earth outreach managerMillie Chu Baird, VP, Office of Chief Scientist, Environmental Defense FundFatima Luna, chief resilience officer, City of TucsonWatch our complementary documentary about how Google's data centers are helping make the invisible threats of air pollution and methane emissions visible.

In Part 1 of Flanigan's Eco-Logic - Climate Resolve Series, Ted speaks with Catherine Baltazar, a Policy Analyst and Organizer, and Lia Cohen, a Coordinator for Climate Planning and Resilience, focusing on their work at Climate Resolve, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, building collaborations to champion equitable climate solutions.Catherine was born and raised in LA, and has focused her work around the conditions of the community she grew up in, with limited access to green spaces, just west of downtown LA. She attended Wellesley College, and upon graduating, received a CivicSpark Fellowship, where she worked at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. There she worked on developing an Urban Heat Island Reduction Plan for the County which focused on strategic tree planting, “green space” development and planning, implementation of “cool roof” ordinances and the piloting of cool and permeable pavement projects. This experience allowed her to approach environmental justice from a local government perspective.Lia was also born and raised in LA, sharing that she grew up in a family with lots of siblings and an open door policy, so her values are very much rooted in community care. She attended UCLA, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in International Development Studies and minors in Public Affairs and Environmental Systems and Society. Before joining Climate Resolve, Lia worked as a virtual field organizer for the Ohio Coordinated Campaign, mobilizing turnout in a key swing state during the 2020 election.Ted, Catherine, and Lia discuss current projects that they are working on at Climate Resolve, both background and front-facing community work. Catherine starts with the Boyle Heights Community Plan Update, a plan that is supportive of environmental quality, economic vitality, and urban design that promotes safe and walkable neighborhoods. The draft plan includes many policies that address climate change and build resilience such as tree planting, cool roof replacement, solar panel installation, sidewalk improvements, resilience hubs, and community engagement. Lia also discusses coordinating the Sustainable Transportation Equity Project (STEP) grant implementation in the City of Commerce, and helping lead project implementation efforts for the Baldwin Hills Community Resilience and Access Plan, as well as the South LA Eco-Lab Transformative Climate Communities grant. They also discuss tools for displacement avoidance, grassroots environmental justice efforts, and creating vibrant communities with access.

SHOW NOTES: Today, we explore a special type of roof that helps keep your home cool. We'll also discuss the buzz around backyard honeybee hives and, if you're hosting an open house, how to stage your home to attract buyers. Whether it's a renovation, repair, or home décor, listen in for more expert tips and inspiration to help with your next home improvement project! - Bee Hives: Backyard bee hives are all the buzzy for producing homemade honey and beeswax. - Cool Roofs: Keep cool and save on energy costs with cool roof technology. - Home Staging: Market your home to interested buyers with these important home staging tips.   Q & A: - Lighting: Pete wants to install can lights on the first floor. An electrician would be more experienced in fishing wiring through the ceiling, laying out the lights, and getting power to the lines and switches. - Siding: What is the best way to seal and protect cedar siding on Lynne's old house? Boiled linseed oil or a solid color stain are two good options for UV and weather protection. - Level Flooring: A crack in the concrete slab has widened and the floor is dipping. Rachel needs a structural engineer to see if it's a structural or cosmetic issue. - Busted Plumbing: A rogue raccoon busted the water line! We advise Brian to hire a public adjuster to have the repairs covered by insurance and done correctly. - Basement Water: Mary paid a lot of money to a shameless contractor after getting water in her basement. We offer tips on improving the exterior drainage to keep things dry. - Dimmer Lights: Richard is looking for a floor or table lamp with a dimmer switch. He can buy a regular lamp instead and plug it into a dimmer switch outlet.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help! Subscribe to America Adapts on Itunes! In this episode, America Adapts talks with innovative climate leader, Jonathan Parfrey, the Executive Director of Climate Resolve (CR).  The mission of Climate Resolve “is to make Southern California more livable and prosperous today and for generations to come by inspiring people at home, at work, and in government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution, as well as prepare for climate change impacts.” Jonathan talks about how CR approaches climate change at the city scale, with the goal of not only making Los Angeles more resilient in the face of climate change, but also improving the overall quality of life of Angelos. It is not a typical mission for most adaptation professionals,, but as Jonathan explains, it’s a strategy that successfully gets broad public support for their activities. Learn about CR’s “Cool Roofs” program, a citywide program to help low income residents obtain solar panels. Jonathan also talks about efforts to create a more integrated and green transportation system for Los Angeles.  We also learn about specific climate change impacts that Los Angeles is currently experiencing, and also, future impacts.  Climate Resolve emphasizes partnerships and they have assumed a major role in bringing together regional partners in these efforts. What really stands out is the proactive approach the city of Los Angeles is taking on these issue, along with the state of California providing substantial support for cities to address climate change.  Hopefully what happens in California will spread across the country. The state truly is an incubator for cutting edge climate change planning.  There’s a lot more, so have a listen to Jonathan tell Climate Resolve’s story.
