We continue with our favorite conversations with Latinas in the entertainment industry. Growing up, television writer Ilana Peña was a student of books, where, she says, "girls could be complicated." Now, as creator of Diary of a Future President on Disney+, Ilana brings that vision of girlhood to life. She tells Alicia about rising from assistant to writer's assistant to writer to creator, how the early loss of her father taught her to use “grief as an engine,” and why being in charge forced her to stop saying “maybe.”Follow Ilana @lanstagram on Instagram. If you loved this episode, listen to Linda Yvette Chavez and Cristela Alonzo for more on creating Latina shows in Hollywood.
This week, we bring you one of our best-loved episodes about Latinas in the entertainment industry. Calderón Kellett runs the show. Literally. She's the co-showrunner and executive producer of Netflix's One Day at a Time, and with each season, she'd adding more credits to that list: writer, director and actor. She talks with Alicia about her rise through Hollywood's writers' rooms (How I Met Your Mother, Devious Maids, and Drunk History), and argues for letting good things be good. And reveals her plans to take her storytelling to the next level. Follow Gloria on instagram @gloriakellett. If you loved this episode, listen to Cristela Alonzo and Linda Yvette Chavez on what takes to write and run a television show.
Comedian Cristela Alonzo isn't afraid to grab life by the horns. Having grown up squatting in an abandoned diner with her mother and three siblings, she knows what it's like to live like you've got nothing to lose. Her lifelong love for comedy had her jumping at the chance to work as an office manager at the Addison Improv in Texas circa 2003, even if it meant fudging some of the details on her resume to land the job. Fast forward to today, she's headlining the country and has made history as the first Mexican-American woman to create and star in her own US primetime sitcom, “Cristela.” With two Netflix specials under her belt and another on the way, Cristela shares that she's living comfortably with her bills on autopay and her “therapy money” in hand. This week, she joins Charlie on the Cripescast to chat about everything from professional wrestling, to her love for Wisconsin cheese curds, and of course Packers vs Cowboys. Follow Cristela on all platforms @cristela9 and be sure to check out her specials on Netflix! Follow the Cripescast and Charlie on all platforms @cripescast and @charlieberens. I picked up some surprise sets this weekend alongside Cristela Alonzo at the Houston Improv. Great crowds, and a nice opportunity to finally run some jokes from the special without any pressure. I also caught Oppenheimer, finally! Christopher Nolan is a fantastic storyteller. I try to stay there, and keep most if what I talk about spoiler free. And like most things do, this sends me down a rabbit hole thinking about how much I truly don't understand about almost everything I encounter. Please consider telling a friend if you dig the show.

This week I talk about my toy/retro video game haul that I got in San Jose while doing shows at the IMPROV with my friends Steve Halasz and Jerry Rocha and how buying old stuff can unlock moments that bring back memories and remind you of times when you were happy. Sometimes we need that reminder.
I went to Wrestlemania 39 last week. Grew up a wrestling fan and had some people criticize it because "it isn't real." It made me realize how much people LOVE to judge things people might like because THEY think it's weird or lame. My point is: If it makes you happy....who cares? It's hard to find joy sometimes. When you find it, don't let it go.
This week, I talk about how it's been over a year since we last talked! Haha...the video of this podcast will be available on YouTube. I also talk about being tired and busy and what I've been up to. For example, I just got back from Mexico City working on something!

TPP wraps up its series on Hispanic American Swing Voters with three very different yet highly insightful guests. Northwestern University historian Geraldo Cadava tells us that both parties have spun overly-simplistic narratives of the Hispanic voter – a mythical concept in his view. Carlos Mencia has always been an iconoclast aiming satire in all directions. He reflects on his immigrant childhood, as one of 18 children, and living with relatives in a rough East L.A. neighborhood. And he expounds his indie-minded philosophy that to be completely conservative or liberal is to ignore the critical importance of change or tradition in American society. Cristela Alonzo knows a thing or two about that conflict between tradition and change. She grew up in an immigrant Tejano Catholic family just over the U.S. border in an abandoned diner, and became the first Latina to create and star in a network TV comedy, Cristela. This week, host Jesse David Fox welcomes comedian, actor, writer, and producer Cristela Alonzo! Creator and star of the ABC sitcom Cristela, Alonzo was the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy. Her debut Netflix special Lower Classy was released in 2017, and now Cristela's back with her second: Middle Classy. Instead of choosing a joke from her aforementioned new special, Cristela decided to go with something a little more symbolic of her life and career as a stand up: Hello, Es NASA. Not only is it the first joke she ever wrote about her family, but it's one of her first big jokes, period. From Conan to Last Comic Standing, to getting feedback that directly led to jokes written for Middle Classy, this joke and interview are a case study for Cristela Alonzo's success.
