Her latest is Hannah Marx's highly anticipated screen version of John Green's celebrated novel “Turtles All The Way Down” (coming to MAX on May 2nd). On this episode, she takes us back to the beginning—her “dramatic” childhood household serving as a form of acting training, defying her mother when she wanted to actually be an actor, and the support she found at the legendary LAByrinth Theater. She tells us why journaling as the character is her first step inside, how one recent role allowed her to show the fullness of her range, why simply being a latino artist is not enough, and much much more. You Might Know Her From

Judy, Judy, Judy! We're just mad about Judy Reyes. You Might Know Her From Birth/Rebirth, Claws, Scrubs, The Horror of Dolores Roach, Smile, Bringing out the Dead, One Day at a Time, and Devious Maids. We talk to Judy all about her Indie Spirit-nominated turn in the indie horror Birth/Rebirth which is a little Frankenstein, a little Thelma & Louise, a little Whatever Happened to Baby Jane–we highly recommend it! Judy takes us through the psychology of playing a grieving mother, acting opposite a child and a pig, and grounding the horror elements. Then, we dig deep into her oeuvre from playing Carla Espinosa for eight seasons on Scrubs to playing gay as Quiet Ann (no -e) in one of the best female ensembles on television on Claws. All that plus, coming in to elevate a horror flick like Smile, headlining the candy-coated Marc Cherry/Eva Longoria dark comedy Devious Maids, and forming a community with other Latina actors in this horrific (we hate but love it) industry. Today we have the award-winning actress, director, producer, entrepreneur, and activist by the name of Eva Longoria.Eva Longoria has long established herself as one of Hollywood's most sought-after television directors. Named by Variety as one of their most anticipated directors of 2021, Longoria continues to hone her craft, seek new projects, and expand opportunities for others by paving the way for future women and minority producers, directors, and industry leaders in Hollywood and beyond. Her strong work ethic, coupled with her passion for storytelling, has led to a pivotal moment as she prepares for the release of her feature film directorial debut with Flamin' Hot. She recently wrapped production for the highly anticipated Searchlight biopic about the story of Richard Montañez and the spicy Flamin' Hot Cheetos snack, for which she beat out multiple high-profile film directors vying for the job.Eva became well known worldwide thanks to Desperate Housewives, where she played the main character, Gabrielle Solis. In my journeys as a colorist, VFX, and post-production supervisor, I had the pleasure of working on a film Eva starred in and produced Without Men years ago. I had a ball working on it.The women of a remote Latin American town are forced to pick up the pieces and remake their world when communist guerrillas forcibly recruit all the town's men. The only men left in town for years are the priest and Julio, who was disguised as a woman. As a trailblazing actress, director, producer, entrepreneur, and activist, Eva Longoria has become one the most significant trailblazers behind the camera. For over a decade, she has been directing and choosing projects that have a purpose and are focused on elevating the stories of the Latinx and other underrepresented communities.Eva past television directing credits include the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary Versus, as well as episodes of Ashley Garcia: Genius In Love, Grand Hotel, Black-ish, The Mick, LA to Vegas, Jane the Virgin, Telenovela, Devious Maids, Latinos Living the Dream, and the short films Out of the Blue and A Proper Send-Off.She was also nominated for a 2021 Daytime Emmy for her directing work on Ashley Garcia: Genius In Love.As a Global Brand Ambassador for L'Oreal Paris for over 15 years, Longoria has become a frequent director of the brand's commercials, she recently upped the ante by self-directing the first ever hair color TV commercial created at home on a smartphone at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.Eva has also contributed writing to publications on the subject of education. She also has a contract with L'Oreal and has been named one of the most beautiful people. Her latest documentary La Guerra Civil, is in this year's Sundance Film Festival. This feature-length documentary follows the epic rivalry between iconic boxers Oscar De La Hoya and Julio César Chávez in the 1990s sparked a cultural divide between Mexican nationals and Mexican Americans. A chronicle of a battle that was more than a boxing rivalry and examines a fascinating slice of the Latino experience in the process. Here are some of why Eva took on this film:“In the Mexican and Mexican-American communities, boxing is so much more than a sport. It is a cultural expression of who we are. The 1996 “Ultimate Glory” fight between Julio César Chávez and Oscar De La Hoya will forever be an iconic memory in our lifetimes. At the time, Chávez was a Mexican national hero entering the 100th professional fight of his career and De La Hoya was a Mexican-American boxer about to enter his prime.Given the distinct differences between these two men and their respective fandoms, nowhere has a rivalry been more intense while also transcending borders to bring everybody together to root for the art of boxing. Many of these same issues of cultural identity dramatically parallel what we are dealing with in our world 25 years later. This is why I wanted to tell this story: to remind people that we can find commonalities amid our differences to bring us back together.”Eva and I discuss her struggles coming up as an actress, transitioning into directing and producing and her new film La Guerra Civil.Enjoy my conversation with Eva Longoria Bastón.

Time Management Workshop About Andi: Andi Matheny is a 25-year veteran of Hollywood who started the Andi Matheny Acting Studios in 2010 and has coached hundreds of actors to book their first roles in TV and film. Andi has had a recurring role on The Resident as Dr. Kelly Whitley, starred opposite Sara Rue in The Hallmark Channel Movie True Love Blooms, opposite Kelsey Grammer in the film High Expectations, opposite Phylicia Rashad in the Oprah Winfrey production David Makes Man and opposite Ryan Phillippe and Patrick Duffy in the comedy Lady of the Manor, written and directed by Justin Long. Other notable credits include Devious Maids, The Mentalist, Ugly Betty, Zoey 101, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and The Shadow Effect. Andi hosted the talk shows Friends or Lovers, Essentials, Fit Resort and Spa, and Kwik Witz. She appeared in dozens of commercials, including a worldwide campaign for Olay. Andi won the Jury Prize for Best Florida Film for her directorial debut The Newest Member at the 2017 Sunscreen Film Festival. Her web series Good Morning St. Pete! which she wrote, directed, and starred in, won Best Web Series at the 2018 Sunscreen Film Festival and garnered her the Best Leading Actress Award at the 2018 Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival. Andi's groundbreaking book “Act ALIVE: The Essential Guide to Igniting and Sustaining Your Working Actor Career” was published in 2022 and debuted on Amazon at #3 in Acting and Auditioning.  Get the book: Act Alive How hosting has changed.  Human beings are interesting.  hHere is a thing that beginning actors and even experienced actors do. They'll look at a script, right? And the script will say things like, "I hate you, you have ruined my life, blah, blah, blah." And everybody jumps to the conclusion of, “Well, this is an angry scene, and I got to say, I hate you, and you've ruined my life.” The hot person confrontation is when you find somebody, this "hot person" in your life who has screwed you over, and now you're kind of doing the fantasy version of talking to them the way you wish you could have talked to them in that moment. As a coach, I'm not interested in your excuses. I'm interested in what you're going to do about it. In spite of all the odds against you.  If your job is to act, you better get fucking good at acting. Understand what casting directors had been trying to get through my head, which is, I want you to be good.  When you audition, you are solving somebody's problem. So when you have the working actor mindset, you show up in a collaborative, helpful spirit to help solve the casting director's problem because the casting director has pressure on them to fulfill all of these roles. As soon as you make it about the other person and not about you and your ego, that's when your bookings are going to start soaring. Art comes from a totally different place. You've got to be connected. You have to be connected from your soul, from a soul level, to what you're doing.  Sometimes the less, the better.

The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1969), by Sam Greenlee, is the fictional story of Dan Freeman, the first black CIA officer, and of the CIA's history of training persons and political groups who later used their specialised training in gathering intelligence, political subversion, and guerrilla warfare against the CIA. For the purposes of this talk we will concern ourselves less with the paramilitary aspects of the film, but rather with the way in which the power of perception can be a force for liberation and how the Bahá'í concept of the Pupil of the Eye--a term used to refer to the spiritual perception of people of African descent--is framed within the context of the film. The term 'spook' has multiple meanings: a ghost or spectre; a spy or covert agent; and a derogatory way to refer to black people. What the film does is to use the term subversively to describe how African Americans have occupied a seemingly passive, subservient position in the minds of the dominant culture. This dismissive attitude overlooked the active power of observation which the black community utilized to learn the behaviour and attitudes of the dominant white community and then to formulate effective modalities of survival based on that information, while the white community remained largely unaware of the inner life of African Americans. It is this capacity to stare deeply into the soul of America, to recognize its contradictions; it's fissures and moral inconsistencies that is an indispensable mechanism for eradicating the scourge of racism. As the Bahá'í writings so eloquently say: "truthfulness is the foundation of all human virtues." Masud Ashley Olufani is an Atlanta-based actor, mixed media artist, and writer whose studio practice is rooted in the discipline of sculpture. He is a graduate of Morehouse College, and The Savannah College of Art and Design where he earned an M.F.A. in sculpture in 2013. Masud has exhibited his work in group and solo shows nationally and internationally. The artist has completed residencies at The Vermont Studio Center; The Hambidge Center for Arts and Sciences; and Creative Currents in Portobello, Panama. He is a 2020 South Arts Cross Sector Grant recipient for Elder, a site specific installation created to coincide with the redevelopment of the historic David T. Howard School in Atlanta. Masud is a 2018 Southern Arts Prize State Fellow; a recipient of a 2015 and 2018 Idea Capital Grant; a Southwest Airlines Art and Social Engagement grant; and a recipient of the 2015-16 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Grant. He is the creative director of Blocked: A Global Healing Project, a multimedia performance created to memorialize spaces marked by the trauma of the transatlantic slave trade. As an actor, he had a recurring role on the BET series The Quad and has appeared in numerous television shows including Greenleaf; Being Mary Jane, Devious Maids, Satisfaction, and Nashville. He is a featured actor in the film biopic All Eyez on Me. He is the co-host of the PBS news based investigative journalism show Retroreport, premiering nationally in the fall of 2019. As a writer, Masud has published articles for Burnaway; Bahá'í Teachings; and is a featured contributor for the Jacob Lawrence Struggle Series catalogue, produced to coincide with a major exhibition of the Struggle Series paintings.
