Comedian Cristela Alonzo isn't afraid to grab life by the horns. Having grown up squatting in an abandoned diner with her mother and three siblings, she knows what it's like to live like you've got nothing to lose. Her lifelong love for comedy had her jumping at the chance to work as an office manager at the Addison Improv in Texas circa 2003, even if it meant fudging some of the details on her resume to land the job. Fast forward to today, she's headlining the country and has made history as the first Mexican-American woman to create and star in her own US primetime sitcom, “Cristela.” With two Netflix specials under her belt and another on the way, Cristela shares that she's living comfortably with her bills on autopay and her “therapy money” in hand. This week, she joins Charlie on the Cripescast to chat about everything from professional wrestling, to her love for Wisconsin cheese curds, and of course Packers vs Cowboys. Follow Cristela on all platforms @cristela9 and be sure to check out her specials on Netflix! Follow the Cripescast and Charlie on all platforms @cripescast and @charlieberens. Maria Canals-Barrera is an American actress. She is known for starring as Theresa Russo in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–2012), Connie Torres in Camp Rock (2008) and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010), and Daniela in the ABC comedy series Cristela (2014–2015). Canals-Barrera has voiced Shayera Hol/Hawkgirl in a lead role in Justice League (2001–2004) and Justice League Unlimited (2004–2006) and in a guest appearance in Static Shock as part of the DC Animated Universe, Sunset Boulevardez in The Proud Family (2001–2005) and Paulina in Danny Phantom (2004–2007).On the Show:Disney Fans Overrunning Austrian Village That Inspired "Frozen": The NY Post says the Austrian village that inspired the movie ''Frozen'' has shut down it's lakefront viewing area because it is being overrun by tourists. The town of Hallstatt has 750 residents. Over 7,000 people a day are now visiting the city because of the Disney film. Mayor Alexander Scheutz was left with no choice, but to shut down the viewing area due to heavy traffic and privacy concerns. Gizmodo says Disney is opening a theme park based on the movie ''Frozen''.The park is part of Hong Kong Disneyland's expansion. It will open later this year. The Liverpool Echo newspaper says a bar, inspired by the Top Gun movies, is going to open in Merryside, England. The bar is called Maverick's. It will feature a jukebox, vintage neon signs, an American flag and a Statue of Liberty. Owner Andrew Mikhail says, "Top Gun is my favorite film of all time and so the bar just had to have a nod to the iconic Tom Cruise film. There's one thing that holds true for all American dive bars: If you visit one, you're always going to have a story to tell later, and that is what we want to achieve with Maverick's". Uproxx says Eddie Murphy is in talks to star in the next Pink Panther movie as Inspector Clouseau. Amazon owns the rights to the Pink Panther franchise FanFest says Bradley Cooper has allegedly turned down the role of Lex Luthor in the upcoming ''Superman: Legacy'' movie. The film is going to be released on July 11th, 2025. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to play Conan the Barbarian again. Ace Showbiz quotes him as saying; "It's been pending for the last ten years. [Fredrik] Malmberg owns the rights. He comes to me and says, 'Oh, I have a deal with Netflix' and when we ask Netflix, they don't know anything about it. It's one of those crazy things. I hope he figures it out. I think you do it like 'Unforgiven', where you play the age. There's a great script out there that John Milius wrote, and others have written one. The story is there. There are directors who want to do it. But he has the rights, and until he sells the rights for one or two movies, or for the franchise, there's nothing you can do about it."Arnold Schwarzenegger tellsThe Hollywood Reporter that he is done playing the Terminator. “The franchise is not done. I'm done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator. Someone has to come up with a great idea. The Terminator was largely responsible for my success, so I always would look at it very fondly. The first three movies were great. Number four [Salvation] I was not in because I was governor. Then five [Genisys] and six [Dark Fate] didn't close the deal as far as I'm concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written.”Michael J Fox tells Variety magazine that he doesn't care if ''Back to the Future'' gets rebooted. “I'm not fanatical. Do what you want. It's your movie. I got paid already. I don't think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You're going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”Christopher Lloyd, aka Doc Brown, says, “I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and [producer Steven] Spielberg felt that they told the story in the three episodes. But if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film it might happen.”
This week, I talk about how it's been over a year since we last talked! Haha...the video of this podcast will be available on YouTube. I also talk about being tired and busy and what I've been up to. For example, I just got back from Mexico City working on something!
TPP wraps up its series on Hispanic American Swing Voters with three very different yet highly insightful guests. Northwestern University historian Geraldo Cadava tells us that both parties have spun overly-simplistic narratives of the Hispanic voter – a mythical concept in his view. Carlos Mencia has always been an iconoclast aiming satire in all directions. He reflects on his immigrant childhood, as one of 18 children, and living with relatives in a rough East L.A. neighborhood. And he expounds his indie-minded philosophy that to be completely conservative or liberal is to ignore the critical importance of change or tradition in American society. Cristela Alonzo knows a thing or two about that conflict between tradition and change. She grew up in an immigrant Tejano Catholic family just over the U.S. border in an abandoned diner, and became the first Latina to create and star in a network TV comedy, Cristela. This week, host Jesse David Fox welcomes comedian, actor, writer, and producer Cristela Alonzo! Creator and star of the ABC sitcom Cristela, Alonzo was the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy. Her debut Netflix special Lower Classy was released in 2017, and now Cristela's back with her second: Middle Classy. Cristela Fowler shares her incredible journey with us. Her love story of how she met her husband Dave, as well as her grief journey of when he died from cancer. She became a widow and single mom to their son Noah, who was still a toddler. She worked really hard to make sure she didn't lose herself in her grief and would lose the essence of who she was. It was already a tragedy that Noah would grow up without ever knowing his father, and she was not going to make that worst by not letting him get to know her true essence outside of her grief. She didn't focus on the "why me" mentality, but rather "why NOT me". There was a reason she went through all this grief, and she grew from it. Her journey of motherhood and resilience, also turned to be one of finding love once again! She is now married to her husband Will, and they have a large blended family. Listen to her beautiful story of love, grief, resilience, family and hope! 2016 was a hard year, to say the least. We lost Prince, David Bowie, Phife Dawg, Sharon Jones, and many others that year. And on top of that, we here in the US had to reckon with the results of the presidential election. On November 11th 2016, A Tribe Called Quest dropped their final album, We Got It From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service, with verses from Phife himself. It came at a time we needed Tribe the most. It went Gold and was widely regarded as one of the best albums of the year. Comedian Cristela Alonzo sat down with us to talk about We Got It From Here and why it quite literally changed the course of her life. We talk about the use of samples and how Tribe was able to update their sound for a modern audience without compromising the mission statement and production style that made them famous all those years ago. In 2014, comedian Cristela Alonzo got her big break: a primetime sitcom that she created, wrote, produced and starred in. It was called "Cristela" and was loosely based off Alonzo's life. But despite her authentic touch, the show was canceled after one season. That motivated her in the following years to release a Netflix special, become the first Latina lead in a Disney-Pixar film and release a memoir titled "Music to My Years." In this conversation, Cristela Alonzo shares intimate stories from her memoir—from living below the poverty line in San Juan, Texas to her eventual rise to stardom.
Cristela Alonzo (Music to My Years ) joins Jordan and Jesse for a discussion of Cristela's performance at the legendary country western venue in Bakersfield Buck Owen's Crystal Palace, the conflicting emotions that come with having a crush on an actor or actress who turns out to be problematic, and Cristela's diabolical revenge on her loud neighbors. Plus, Cristela has a great new book out! Get it here! Join MaxFun in donating to Homeless Youth, on behalf of Jesse's friend, Evan. Go to MaximumFun.org/evan Action Item: have holiday questions? Around the middle of October, right before the start of Hispanic Heritage Month (of course), we had a chance to chat with the fabulous Cristela Alonzo, who's currently on tour with a new act and a new book called MUSIC TO MY YEARS (https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Music-to-My-Years/Cristela-Alonzo/9781501189203) . Latino Rebels Radio host Julio Ricardo Varela talks to Cristela about her book, but also about television theme songs, their love of the Avett Brothers and why it's so damn exhausting to break stereotypes. And for all of you who are interested in the politics of climate change, subscribe to Climate 2020 (https://climate2020podcast.com/) today.
Cristela Alonzo knows about starting at square one — and then doing it again and again. In the second part of our interview, she talks to Alicia about facing her make-or-break moment, how she “had to go live a life to have things to talk about,” and why she’s back with her new tour My Affordable Care Act.” She writes about it all in her new memoir, “Music to My Years.Love the show? As a latchkey kid growing up in San Juan, Texas, comedian Cristela Alonzo dreamed of leaving her border town and seeing the world. In this emotional two-part episode, she tells Alicia how her childhood aspirations made her the black sheep of her family, and how she needed to put those dreams on hold, first to care for her sister’s children, and then, her ailing mother. Through it all, music and television – from the Backstreet Boys to the Golden Girls – was her "connection to the outside world." She writes about it all in her funny and moving new book, Music to My Years: A Mixtape Memoir of Growing Up and Standing Up.Love the show? Show your love and become a Latina to Latina insider here!
In the second installment of Rewriting Immigration, I had the pleasure of sitting down with WBUR Arts and Culture reporter, Cristela Guerra, to discuss her Panamanian roots and her experiences as a journalist in an ever-changing America. She’s brown, she’s queer, and she’s here to change the world one word at a time. This badass Aquarian writer and journalist shares her personal experiences and insight with me and EPISODE ONE guest, Michelle McEwen. Listen in to hear Cristela use her storytelling mastery as she invites us into her childhood, adolescence, and beyond. She sheds light on what it means to be an immigrant and the responsibly we all share in creating an equitable world. We're listening to some of our favorite interviews from Bullseyes past this week, and we've got a couple doozies. First up: the living legend, the master of funk music, Dr. Funkenstein himself: George Clinton, from 2014. The impact he's had on modern music is so huge that he's almost more myth than actual person nowadays, but Clinton's life story is a fascinating one: starting in doo-wop, moving on to Motown, and then creating his own genre from scratch: funk. He'll talk about that, his struggle with drug addiction and some of his best wild stories from Parliament Funkadelic's early days. Then, Cristela Alonzo, from last year. She's a veteran standup comedian and actress. You might've seen her on the ABC sitcom Cristela - she was the show's creator, star, she also wrote and produced it. Alonzo was actually the first latina ever to do all that on one TV show. She's been working on her standup act more lately, and it's really great. Cristela mixes political humor with her own life story (including her time spent living in an abandoned diner) to a hilarious and really endearing effect. She's also starring on the new Maximum Fun podcast Bubble, which you should check out if you haven't already. C'mon! And, finally: Jesse tells you about an SNL sketch that he connects with on a profound, deep level. And - since you're a Bullseye listener - we bet you will, too.
We're throwing it back to when Myte and FriedPapita were inhabiting the same space! In What's the Difference, Cristela and Maz share their theories on the difference between eternal and everlasting, and prison and jail. Maz's claimed areas of expertise are: Iran, shaving one's head and bad accents. Cristela claims to know a lot about The Golden Girls, bad 1980s movies and 1980s Radio Hits. James is back from the Poconos, making Pizza Delivery guys high kick for a tip and Nnekay is MELTING and shouting from the roof tops that climate change is here and showing it's ugly lil head. Just like Nnekay did in MaxFunCon West, James had a BLAST at MaxFunCon East!!! There he met comedian Cristela Alonzo, and also comedian Janine Brito. He taught people to P.E.E- provoke, enlighten, and entertain and of course... started a Conga Line. James leaves us with some amazing tips from Chenjerai Kumanyika (@catchatweetdown) who spoke at Max Fun Con. In James' Korner he is celebrating Labor Day by talking about and honors the POCs who are normally not recognized all that they do for this holiday. In Nnekay's Korner, she is going over what the DACA Program is, how Trump and Sessions are repealing it, and what people who benefited from this program can do and know what their rights are. We are still gearing up for our 100th episode which means, we're aiming to reach 100 reviews for the drawing for our Minority Korner Care Package, so please keep the reviews coming to be entered into the running! We are so excited to share our conversation with our dear friend Cristela Alonzo the voice of “Cruz Ramirez” in the new Disney/Pixar "Cars 3" movie! There’s so much laughter and inspiration in this episode. You don’t want to miss a minute of it! Cristela is a history maker! In 2014, she became the first Latina to create, produce, write, and star in her own primetime comedy, Cristela. You may also recognize her from her her hilarious Netflix special Lower Classy. We talked to her about life lessons, broken teeth, how to deal with bullies, her Selena dreams and about being the “good” Latina daughter. Paulina also shares why this movie has special significance for her as a mother of daughters. We had the biggest, hardcore Golden Girls fan ever Cristela Alonzo (@cristela9, The View, Comedy Central) on the Golden Girls podcast! We sat next to her Golden Girls candles and were showered with the GG's presents as we watched the next episode of the Golden Girls. It was the one where Rose's little sister comes to visit and it turns out she's kind of a psycho. Also, Sophia watches over the neighbor dog, Dreyfuss. We talked about Ferris Bueller days, Ghostbusters and the Chick-fil-A of pet stores. Music by Mike Dennison (@mikd33) and Brian Kokernak (@kokernutz).
Cristela Alonzo (Comedy Central, Cristela, Conan) and Jamie discuss the art of passionate persistence, why late night TV sets still matter, and the importance of sticking to your guns. Plus: Spring cleaning!
Growing up, comedian Cristela Alonzo thought "making it" meant living like the people on TV. Although they didn't look like her Latino family — squatting in an abandoned diner with an extension cord for a lifeline — she saw herself in their stories. Now Alonzo, the first Latina woman to create, produce, write and star in a network TV show, has seen her own family represented on TV. Her sitcom "Cristela" mines the humorous side of the American dream. Today she joins Shad to talk about television's influence, how she's found joy in unlikely places, and why she does not, in fact, speak for every Latino.
Cristela Alonzo made TV history in 2014, by being the first Latina to create, produce and star in a network TV sitcom, "Cristela,". She has a great story about perseverance and the will to succeed. It was a real fun podcast talking about growing up in a diner, moving to LA then getting car impounded, working for celebrities, & the struggle to chase her dream. Hope you enjoy. Pero la lista de renovaciones es larga e incluye, entre otras, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, How To Get Away With Murder, Scandal, Once Upon a Time, American Crime y Marvel’s Agent Carter, The Middle y Modern Family. NBC sacó la tarjeta roja para Constantine, que apenas lleva una temporada, y para State of Affaire, protagonizada por Katherine Heigl. Tampoco sobrevivieron las comedias Marry Me, About a Boy y One Big Happy. Entre las producciones que renovó se encuentran Bob’s Burgers, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Empire, Family Guy, Gotham, The Last Man on Earth, Masterchef Junior, New Girl, Los Simpsons y Sleepy Hollow. ESCUCHEMOS A MAGIC! What a strange weekend it was for Juskow. From London to Wales and special guest Mexican Director Memo Salazar in between. Juskow talks about his duties to sit through poetry on a Football Sunday in October. And finally a shout out to baseball as Juskow is assured that if the Royals see Bumgarner it's all over. Let alone, who doesn't enjoy saying the word Bumgarner. Plus, the Pendulum pick gets one last chance to make good, what's the pick this week? What, no Mulaney this week, what will we do? Juskow and Memo settle for a discussion on the horribleness of what is Byron Allen's show and then the new Friday Night line up that includes Cristela. That's right we go into Mexican-American comedy. Is that crazy to do on a podcast? Sure it is, but we don't care. From a weekend with Michael Sheen and Jon Hamm to Welsh play writing. This episode clearly has it all. You won't want to miss it. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Cristela Alonzo was thrilled to sell a script to ABC, but the show seemed dead after the network decided not to shoot a pilot. She tells us how she was able to resurrect Cristela. Then, meet the woman who has been called the Meryl Streep of audiobook narration.
Andrew Leeds Andrew has most recently been seen recurring on BONES and NCIS LA. He also just finished shooting a pilot for ABC called CRISTELA, which was just picked up by ABC. Long before all of that he appeared on Broadway in the musical FALSETTOS and in the national touring company of LES MISERABLES. Leeds is also a writer and has written and executive produced three pilots for NBC, including last season's BRENDA FOREVER. Andrew is a beloved member of the LK&Co. faculty. There are so many inspiring and educational podcasts out there that provide us with the opportunity to hear how well-established stars got to where they are today. But those actors are so faaaaaaar away from where so many of us are today! Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in the hills? Because whatever they did, we can do it too! “Kahnversations,” is a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got their start in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds; as well as to dish out some crazy stories! Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their path, process, and experiences, and about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.
