I'm sitting alone in my car with the radio on. One of my favorite songs of all time begins to play. I start moving my head and tapping along with it on the steering wheel. Pretty soon, I can't help myself: I'm belting out this song. I look around to see if anyone notices me because I'm in the middle of traffic. I realize I don't care, though. I love this song so much and am so in the moment that I'm even getting chills during certain parts of it! Like stories, music has the power to take you to a place where you lose sense of time and space. My guest today knows that all too well. In fact, Rich Jacques is an award-winning producer and artist who's spent his life creating songs and narratives that evoke all the emotions of the human experience. In this episode, you'll hear about REM and why literal meanings for songs aren't necessary, the Brené Brown speech that caused her the most anxiety but also put her on the map, and get answers to questions like: How do you bring stories to life through sound? Why can your relationship to storytelling be a daunting thing? And how can giving yourself permission push you past your writer's block? What you will learn in this episode: How true experiences affect the audience that hears your stories How shifting into first person or present tense can enhance your stories What critical piece is necessary for both telling and listening to stories Who is Rich? Rich Jacques is a Grammy-winning producer, songwriter, musician, and solo artist based in Santa Barbara, California. Authenticity is a key factor that drives him. As a producer, Rich wants to get to the core of what makes each artist unique. Some of the notable artists he's worked with include Maya Rudolph, Sarah Macdougal, Rob Giles, Colin Hay, Shane Alexander, and Lisa Loeb (Rich won his Grammy collaborating on her album Feel What U Feel). As a songwriter, his music has been featured in commercials for Honda and Xbox as well as in movies and on TV shows. You can hear Rich's work on productions like Grey's Anatomy, The Fosters, Nashville, Pretty Little Liars, Heartland, Vampire Diaries, America's Got Talent, The Breakup, All My Children, and so much more. I have been a fan of Anjunabeats since I discovered Above & Beyond in 2012, and from there found different types of trance music. Nowadays, I still like some of the Anjunabeats music but I definitely stray toward the Anjunadeep side now. If I'm not listening to deep/progressive house, I'm listening to techno or uplifting/tech trance. I was always known as the person at parties who would the aux cord and play my music. It's hard to compare that feeling of someone showing a positive reaction to a song you show them. I started DJing in June 2018 after my buddy Cody showed me the basics. I bought my first controller (DDJ-400) and for the first 6 months, there was rarely a day that went by where I didn't touch that controller. I now own an XDJ-Rx2 and have played multiple clubs in San Francisco including 1015 Folsom, Mezzanine and Public Works. I also played on Goldroom's High Seas Festival in July. While I don't produce music, that is the next step for me.

Download Bio of the artist Since his debut album The Middle Way, Los Angeles based singer/songwriter/performer/producer Shane Alexander has shaped a distinctive career for himself. Touring the US and 11 other countries - both as a headliner, and as support for Bon Iver, Jewel, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Seal, Styx and Yes, the fiercely independent artist has developed a loyal international fanbase, licensed his original music to appear in over 100 television shows, films and commercials, and recently crossed 16 million streams on Spotify. In 2016 Alexander opened Buddhaland Studios, a beautiful multi-purpose recording, video, performance and writing space in Southern California. After completing his self-produced 6th solo album Bliss at Buddhaland, he went on to produce Shelby Figueroa's debut Highwire - which hit #1 on Amazon's singer/songwriter chart. On Oct 2, in direct response to the tragic and senseless mass-shooting in Las Vegas, Shane wrote and recorded the new single "I'll Be Here" - releasing it only days later. What he shares on this episode The struggle is real for most independent artists. You can really drown in the music industry especially since it has experienced such a drastic change over the last few decades. Its almost imperative that we are able to equip ourselves not just in our art but also to manage our brand. There's a million ways to get your music heard but it's always good to have someone in the mix. Maintain a high standard and put a lot of music out there, you never know what will be successful and most importantly establish relationships in the Industry so they know what you're doing and you're in the loop. On this episode How to get your songs featured on movies and tv shows. How he found his agent. What he learnt from touring with the stars. How he found sponsors for the big tour. His take on Social media. What he learnt from working for a management company? Key takeaways cultivate relationships - talk to people If opportunities arise you need to be absolutely professional and humble. Be great and be cool, good things will follow. In the independent game you need to have a team together. Your online profile is a blank page you can do whatever you want with it. You have to watch what you say and what you do. It's your best chance to reach people. Avoid things that don't make you look good. Don't suck and don't quit. Figure out to way to be undeniably good. Work with people that you believe in.
