In this episode of Danny Hurst´s Unusual Histories Podcast, he is joined by former Manchester City midfielder and football agent, Barry Silkman, who grew up in the East End. He shares his insights into what it was like then as well as how he became a professional football player despite there being quite a lot of prejudice against Jews at the time. Barry talks about the pubs, local characters (including The Krays) and how people from different cultures developed a close community. As you would expect there are also a few footballing insider stories. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS The area has changed so much that when Barry went back there 18 months ago at times he didn´t really know where he was. When Barry was a kid, the area was very Jewish. Now, not many Jews live there. Despite its bad reputation, the East End of Barry´s childhood was a very safe place. The community was quite mixed. There were differences but most people integrated so everyone got along. Petticoat Lane market, one of London’s oldest, was always very busy. Both of Barry´s parents worked there for many years. BEST MOMENTS “Now everyone's so wary .. the dimension of the East End has changed.” “I'm very proud of my heritage.” “Three out of four doors were wide open until 10 at night…There weren’t people getting mugged, getting stabbed.” “The first time I played against Spurs, it was just a strange feeling.” “What I went through being Jewish as a kid made me mentally and physically very strong, so nothing gets me down.” “A lot of our friends were Indian people from Brick Lane, because we went to school with them.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Silkman Petticoat Lane Market History - https://surveyoflondon.org/map/feature/1742/detail Demographics of Stepney - https://www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/Documents/Borough_statistics/Ward_profiles/SDSG-Ward-Profile.pdf Jewish Football Players - https://www.jta.org/2022/02/25/sports/british-jews-love-soccer-so-why-are-there-no-jews-in-the-premier-league https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cable_Street https://www.jewisheastend.com/garden.html HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. In this episode, Josh Stepney delves into his upbringing and how he was raised with a deep-seated hatred towards white people. He shares that the word "hate" signifies an extreme level of separation, driven by a fear of being hurt. Josh unravels the generational programming that instilled this belief, highlighting the real dangers that his family faced, leading to a justified sense of caution. Through introspection, Josh comes to understand the falsehoods that shaped his perceptions and the importance of embracing his own identity as an African American Jewish individual in America. In this essay, Andrew Whitehead examines the two most lethal incidents linked to anarchism in London's history: the murder of three police officers during an attempted armed robbery at Houndsditch in December 1910 and the ensuing siege of Sidney Street in Stepney. He looks particularly at the links between the mainly Latvian perpetrators and three anarchist luminaries then living in exile in London, Peter Kropotkin, Errico Malatesta and Rudolf Rocker. Andrew Whitehead is an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham and an associate editor of History Workshop Journal. His latest book A Devilish Kind of Courage: Anarchists, Aliens and the Siege of Sidney Street, was published by Reaktion Books in March 2024. Guest post by Dr Jessica Barker MBE, author of Hacked: The secrets behind cyber attacks Malicious insiders are a unique threat in the world of cyber security. Most internal organizational issues are non-malicious: people make mistakes within systems that are rarely designed to support them, usually with high levels of security friction and insufficient training and tools. Internal people with malicious intent are much less common but can be deeply damaging. Hacked, insights by Dr Jessica Barker Unlike external attackers, these individuals already have privileged access to an organization's networks, systems, and data, making their attacks potentially more devastating. At the heart of some insider threats is the simple motive of financial gain. Individuals may exploit their access to sensitive company data for personal profit, such as selling trade secrets to competitors, committing fraud, or engaging in identity theft. If the insider has the offer of a new job, there can be a temptation to take data from their existing employer. This was a theme of the infamous Formula 1 'Spygate', in which Nigel Stepney stole 780 pages of confidential information from Ferrari, handing it to Mike Coughlan, then chief designer at McLaren, seemingly with a view that the two could use the information as a springboard to secure new jobs at another team. Financial motivation and ambition were apparently not the only driving factor for Stepney's actions. Having risen through the ranks of motor racing, Stepney was chief mechanic at Ferrari when Schumacher ruled the racecourse in the early 2000s. Recognised as pivotal in the team's success, it seems he was sorely disappointed when he did not get a promotion. This is a common factor in malicious insider activity, as I explore in Hacked: The Secrets Behind Cyber Attacks. Those who feel undervalued, overlooked, or aggrieved justify their malicious activity against their employer. The desire for revenge, or a perceived levelling of the playing field, can push an otherwise loyal employee to rationalize their harmful actions as justified payback. In a similar way, some insiders are motivated by personal beliefs or affiliations that are at odds with their employer's actions or values, as claimed by Edward Snowden. They might leak sensitive information to press outlets, activist groups, or even foreign entities to expose what they perceive as unethical practices or to advance a particular cause. Some malicious insiders are not turned, but instead are planted. Corporate or state-sponsored espionage involves insiders who spy on their employers on behalf of a third party. Insiders motivated by espionage are often recruited, coerced, or bribed by external entities seeking to gain a competitive edge or national security advantage. In other cases, insiders are not planted or tempted by external groups, but rather are coerced. Threats to personal safety, blackmail, or manipulation can compel someone to steal or sabotage data. These individuals find themselves with no other perceived option due to the circumstances. Recognizing the diverse motivations behind malicious insider actions is essential for developing effective security strategies. Thoroughly screening potential hires and conducting regular checks on existing employees, especially those with access to critical systems, is a fundamental step. Using the principle of 'least privilege' helps to ensure that employees have only the access necessary for their roles. Monitoring tools support detection of unusual activity patterns that could indicate malicious intent. Beyond all of this, it is important not to overlook the importance of awareness and culture. Building a positive and proactive culture of cyber security, in which employees are empowered to practice healthy security behaviours makes it harder for malicious insiders to operate without standing out. Fostering a positive work environment is just as important, especially in the current economic climate....

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN BY BRINGING BACK THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE OF EARLY AMERICA: GEORGE WHITEFIELD
GEORGE WHITEFIELD WRITES: “Among the many heinous sins for which this nation is grown infamous, perhaps there is no one more crying, but withal more common, than the abominable custom of profane swearing and cursing. Our streets abound with persons of all degrees and qualities, who are continually provoking the holy one of Israel to anger, by their detestable oaths and blasphemies: and our very children, "out of whose mouths," the psalmist observes in his days, "was perfected praise," are now grown remarkable for the quite opposite ill quality of cursing and swearing. This cannot but be a melancholy prospect, for every sincere and honest minister of Jesus Christ, to view his fellow-creatures in; and such as will put him on contriving some means to prevent the spreading at least of so growing an evil; knowing that the Lord (without repentance) will assuredly visit for these things. But alas! what can he do? “ THEN WE ALSO WILL HEAR FROM NATAN COLE, EYE WITNESS OF A GEORGE WHITEFIELD APPEARANCE AND HOW GEORGE WHITEFIELD HELD HIS AUDIENCE SPELLBOUND. “Then on a Sudden, in the morning about 8 or 9 of the Clock there came a messenger and said Mr. Whitefield preached at Hartford and Wethersfield yesterday and is to preach at Middletown this morning at ten of the Clock, I was in my field at Work, I dropt my tool and I had in my hand an ran home to my wife telling her to make ready quickly to go and hear Mr. Whitefield preach at Middletown, then run to my pasture for my horse with all my might; fearing that I should be too late; having my horse I wish my wife soon mounted the horse and went forward as fast as I thought the horse could bear, and when my horse got much out of breath I would get down and put my wife on the Saddle and bid her ride as fast as she could and not Stop or Slack for me except I bad her and so I would run until I was much out of breath; and then mount my horse again, and so I did several times to favour my horse; we improved every moment to get along as if we were fleeing for our lives; all the while fearing we should be too late to hear the Sermon, for we had twelve miles to ride double in little more than an hour and we went round by the upper housen parish. [On the road to the sermon] And when we came within about half a mile or a mile of the Road that comes down from Hartford, Wethersfield and Stepney to Middletown; on high land I saw before me a Cloud or fogg rising; I first thought it came from the great River, but I came near the Road, I heard a noise something like a low rumbling thunder and presently found it was the noise of Horses feet coming down the Road and this Cloud was a Cloud of dust made by the Horses felt; it arose some Rods into the air over the tops of Hills and trees and when I came within about 20 rods of the Road, I could see men and horses Slipping along in the Cloud like shadows and as I drew nearer it seemed like a steady Stream of horses and their riders, scarcely a horse more than a length behind another, all of a Lather and foam with sweat, their breath rolling out of their nostrils every Jump; every horse seemed to go with all his might to carry his rider to hear news from heaven for the saving of Souls; it made me tremble to see the Sight, how the world was in a Struggle; I found a Vacancy between two horses to Slip in min and my wife said law our cloths will be all spoiled see how they look, for they were so Covered with dust, that they looked almost all of a Colour Coats, hats, shirts, and horses.
Hoy en el tejado uno de los grandes discos de fusión jazz, funk y soul de los años 70s, un trabajo que es además un experimento interesante y poco habitual en la época ya que es una grabación en directo pero incorpora 5 temas registrados en estudio. Estamos hablando de Gratitude, el famoso doble blanco de los Earth, Wind & Fire que apareció en el mercado a finales de 1975 tras el éxito ese mismo año de otra grabación de la banda, That's the Way of the World, un larga duración que ya os acercamos al tejado hace unos meses. ANOTHER CRITICAL SERMON BY GEORGE WHITEFIELD WHICH WILL MOST LIKELY LEAVE OUR FASTFOOD FREEWILL FRIENDS AND THEOLOGIANS SCRATCHING THEIR HEAD, WONDERING OUT OF WHAT BIBLE HE GOT THIS INFORMATION FROM, FOR THE DOCTRINE OF FREEWILL COMPLETELY DOWNPLAYS THAT ORIGINAL SIN IS SIN TO BE REPENTED OVER BEFORE IT EVER BECOMES AN ACT OF SIN AND IS INEXTRICABLY TIED TO THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD BY FAITH WHICH IS OUR TICKET INTO HEAVEN. IF WE AS AMERICANS OUR SERIOUS ABOUT OUR SOULS THIS SERMON IS A FOUNDATIONAL SERMON AND THUS A MUST HEAR TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SALVATION OF OUR SOULS. ALSO IN THIS MESSAGE WE WILL HEAR THE PERSONAL TESTIMONY NATHAN COLE OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GEORGE WHITEFIELD'S PREACHING UPON HIS SOUL AND HIS HEARER'S SOULS. GEORGE WHITEFIELD WAS SO INFLUENTIAL TO THE AMERICAN COLONISTS THAT NATHAN COLE WROTE THIS: “ Then on a Sudden, in the morning about 8 or 9 of the Clock there came a messenger and said Mr. Whitefield preached at Hartford and Wethersfield yesterday and is to preach at Middletown this morning at ten of the Clock, I was in my field at Work, I dropt my tool and I had in my hand an ran home to my wife telling her to make ready quickly to go and hear Mr. Whitefield preach at Middletown, then run to my pasture for my horse with all my might; fearing that I should be too late; having my horse I wish my wife soon mounted the horse and went forward as fast as I thought the horse could bear, and when my horse got much out of breath I would get down and put my wife on the Saddle and bid her ride as fast as she could and not Stop or Slack for me except I bad her and so I would run until I was much out of breath; and then mount my horse again, and so I did several times to favour my horse; we improved every moment to get along as if we were fleeing for our lives; all the while fearing we should be too late to hear the Sermon, for we had twelve miles to ride double in little more than an hour and we went round by the upper housen parish. When I saw Mr. Whitefield come upon the Scaffold he lookt almost angelical; a young, Slim, slender, youth before some thousands of people with a bold undaunted Countenance, and my hearing how God was with him every where he came along it Solemnized my mind; and put me into a trembling fear before he began to preach; for he looked as if he was Cloathed with authority from the Great God; and a sweet sollume solemnity sat upon his brow And my hearing him preach, gave me a heart wound; By Gods blessings: my old Foundation was broken up, and I saw that MY RIGHTEOUSNESS would NOT SAVE ME;

Jon Bickley talks to community leader Pauline Stepney for an ongoing podcast series marking the 250th anniversary of the writing of Amazing Grace. Its author John Newton was a slave trader and later an abolitionist. We all know that Amazing Grace is universally loved but how do we view the slave trade today? We asked three people of Caribbean descent how it impacts on their lives even now. Pauline is an inspirational leader within the Caribbean community in Bedford. As the child of immigrants Pea has witnessed the evolution of community relations over many years. As a trustee of the Legacy of Windrush Descendants (LOWD) charity she is working to deliver educational, cultural, social, advocacy, commemorative and health events as a contribution to the diverse wealth of Bedford. This is done with a grace and humour that spreads a little love to everyone around.

With so many icons leaving us at an alarming rate, we can barely keep up with all the tributes. And this week, even though we had just recorded a solid three tributes to the long gone soul producer and arranger Charles Stepney, the more recently departed legendary composer Burt Bacharach and Television's visionary co-founder, Tom Verlaine, we got late word that Trugoy the Dove from De La Soul, a/k/a David Jolicouer, had passed (so we'll have a feature on him next time.) Our two Verlaine tributes come via Matt Jencik from Reckless Records in Chicago, and Why Patti Smith Matters author Caryn Rose. Mr. Stepney is remembered by his three daughters, Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté, and Paul's brother Mike Myers shares personal memories of working with "Santa Monica Burt" Bacharach on Austin Powers and beyond. St. Clement's church in London plays a special musical set of chimes each day, partially based around the famous English nursery rhyme that features the bells of multiple old London churches - the rhyme goes like this: Oranges and lemons, Say the bells of St. Clement's. You owe me five farthings, Say the bells of St. Martin's. When will you pay me? Say the bells at Old Bailey. When I grow rich, Say the bells at Shoreditch. When will that be? Say the bells of Stepney. I do not know, Says the great bell at Bow. Here comes a candle to light you to bed, And here comes a chopper to chop off your head! Chip chop chip chop the last man is dead.
We're sitting down with Chicago sisters Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté Stepney, who join us to discuss the work of their father, the late Charles Stepney. As a producer and arranger, Stepney was at the helm for incredible '60s and '70s work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Rotary Connection, The Dells, Muddy Waters, Minnie Riperton, Ramsey Lewis, Terry Callier, and many more before his passing in 1976. But on Step on Step, a mind-blowing new collection from International Anthem, a new vision of Stepney emerges: that of a home recording genius. Propelled by a drum machine and warm synths, the music here was recorded alone on a 4-track in his Southside Chicago basement, it retains the sophistication of his studio efforts but presents his sound in a raw, utterly unvarnished manner. As the Summer of Stepney rolls on, the Stepney Sisters join host Jason P. Woodbury to unpack who Stepney was, his relationship with his wife and partner Rubie, his love of science fiction, and his status as one of hip-hop's most sampled composers. Big Al pulls no punches in how he still expects the fundamentals of the position to take priority over any of the modern elements of today's game. We mention in the podcast that the ins and outs of Alex's career were left to one side for this episode. London was a city on the front line in the Second World War. It suffered hits from nearly 12,000 tons of bombs, with nearly 30,000 civilians killed by enemy action. The Blitz changed the landscape of the city. Many famous landmarks were hit, including Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London - even the Imperial War Museum. Some areas, such as Stepney, were so badly damaged that they had to be almost entirely rebuilt after the war. But it wasn't just the city's physical landscape that was transformed. With the arrival of large numbers of Commonwealth and overseas service personnel, London became much more cosmopolitan. After 1942, vast numbers of American servicemen were deployed in the capital, and it was also a busy transport hub and a popular destination for troops on leave. This audiobook tells the story of these momentous years in London's history through IWM's unique collections. Using personal accounts from letters and diaries, objects and documents it gives an up-close and revealing insight into those turbulent years in the capital, experienced by those who lived there.
* The original YouTube episode has video footage and images taken at both cemeteries. This episode explores a very small portion of Ed and Lorraine Warren's world…. You might know them from the Conjuring, but in this video visited 2 of the world's most haunted cemeteries. In the early afternoon of Oct. 3, 2020, I went to visit Union Cemetery in Easton, CT and Stepney Cemetery in Monroe, CT. The compilation of photos and videos (seen on my YouTube episode linked above) are from Oct. 3, 2020 as well as a visit I made to Stepney Cemetery with Lorraine Warren and a group of people in April of 2009. Union and Stepney Cemeteries are two of the most haunted cemeteries in the United States and possibly the world. Ed and Lorraine's household is in Monroe, CT where they have their occult museum. The museum is filled with objects that they had collected in the over 50 years of their investigations with the Roman Catholic Church into hauntings and paranormal activity. And their occult museum IS one of the most haunted places in the entire world. Today, both Ed and Lorraine Warren are buried in Stepney Cemetery, less than a mile away from their house. That is currently occupied by their son-in-law Tony Spera and their daughter Judy. Next to Stepney Cemetery is the church that Ed and Lorraine had attended: Our Lady of The Rosary Chapel. Where Bishop Robert McKenna performed many exorcisms throughout the years, with the Warrens present. Both Union and Stepney Cemeteries were said to be est. in the 1700s. They are less than 5 mi apart connected by CT 59 Stepney/Easton Rd. When I had gone to visit Lorraine at their occult museum in 2009, we later went to take psychic photos at Stepney Cemetery that night. And boy did I get some psychic photos that night! Lorraine had explained to us, before we left her house that night, that if you're going to a cemetery with the intent to take photos of spirit orbs, then usually, the other side will show up for the occasion. We all, also, have our own spirit guides and angels around us all the time as well. Typically, the spirits of the dead don't just hang around or live in cemeteries like you might see in a movie. However, for the rare few that are grounded to areas like Union and Stepney Cemeteries, there's usually a reason they're still there. In this video, I explain a few reasons why a spirit may be grounded to an area. In regards, to Union and Stepney Cemeteries… They are famous for many ghostly encounters both in the cemeteries and on the dark roads at night. Listen to the episode to learn more about these scary real life encounters with the spirits of Union and Stepney Cemeteries!!! Also, I explain ways to protect yourself before and during a cemetery walkthrough. And just know that although they are not with us in body, Ed and Lorraine Warren are still fighting the good fight from the other side, where they are more powerful now than ever. God, let their light and love shine down on the world so that we will be in darkness no more. #StepneyCemetery #TheWarrens #UnionCemetery * You can help support this podcast with a small monthly donation to help sustain future episodes. https://anchor.fm/connected5d/support Thank you for listening!!! What a blast it was to talk to Mark Mondesir. I've been a fan for many years and have always loved Mark's playing. In this conversation, we talk about a variety of subjects, including his time working with John McLaughlin, Courtney Pine, Jilian Joseph, and many others. ENJOY! Mark Mondesir was born in Stepney, London, on 12 December 1964. Mainly self taught, Mondesir attended various music workshops including Ian Carr's workshops at the Weekend Arts Centre. He began his professional career with Courtney Pine between 1985 and 1989 and recorded with Kevin Eubanks in 1991 & 1993 for the Blue Note label. In the 1990s he accompanied musicians who were visiting the UK; these included Art Farmer, Joanne Brackeen, Cecil Payne, Ronnie Matthews, James Williams, Hermeto Pascoal, Joe Zawinul, McCoy Tyner and John Scofield. Since the mid 90s he continues to play with Pee Wee Ellis... including a brief stint with James Brown's Bobby Byrd, Fred Wesley & Vicki Anderson early in that period. In the 1990s and early 2000s he was part of bands led by pianist Julian Joseph. From 2007 - 2010 he toured & recorded with John McLaughlin's Fourth Dimension Band including the Grammy nominated album To The One. He has also toured with Todd Sharpville with blues legends Joe Louis Walker & Duke Robillard, ex Deep Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes & later with Jethro Tull in 2009.

Minnie Riperton. Earth, Wind & Fire. Ramsey Lewis. The Dells. Rotary Connection. Marlena Shaw. Today is the 90th anniversary of the man who gave these artists aesthetic distinction: The one and only Charles Stepney. Integral to the Chess Records machine, producer, orchestrator, arranger, writer and prolific musician, Charles Stepney, was one of the brightest musical lights of the 60s and 70s, dying suddenly and tragically young in 1976 at the age of 45. Charles Stepney changed my life. I'm honored to pay him tribute. On this episode of MILESTONES, I'm joined by 7X GRAMMY winning musician and Newport Jazz Festival Artistic Director, Christian McBride, to discuss the legacy of Stepney, the profundity of his unmistakably mystical sound, and the absolute need to lift the names of black orchestrators, in particular, whose respective genius oft times remains in obscurity.
On today's Saturday Panel John Duggan was joined by former Manchester United keeper and 1968 European Cup-winner Alex Stepney, ex-Irish international David Forde, and OTB regular David Preece, the one-time Aberdeen net-minder who is now goalkeeping coach with Östersunds FK in Sweden. We discussed their shot-stopping heroes, the art of saving a penalty, goalscoring keepers and much more - plus we hear from Alex Stepney on what it was like lining out alongside Best, Law, and Charlton!

With a lot of talk surrounding David De Gea's recent performances, I decided to get former Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney down to the studio to have a chat about how he can relate to United's current number one. Alex Stepney is one of Manchester United's greatest ever keepers, having made 539 appearances and being apart of a European Cup winning side. He has played alongside some of the world's greatest players, including George Best... he took the time to discuss his stories with Best in the video. Hope you enjoy!
