What lurks under the surface of the dense black peat pits strewn across northern Europe? Bog bodies, naturally mummified humans, have fascinated archeologists for decades as they offer unique insights into ancient cultures.Tristan Hughes is joined by Professor Melanie Giles to examine how old these bodies are, how they're preserved and incredible examples including Tolland Man and Lindow Man. They discuss the myriad potential explanations for their deaths ranging from ritual sacrifice to accidental demise, as well as the importance of these bogs in prehistoric societies, including their resources and hazards, and their valuable role in modern ecological efforts.View the Tolland ManMORESiberian Ice MummiesThe Beaker PeoplePresented by Tristan Hughes. If we need proof that textiles can rewrite human history, then it lies with the bog bodies of northern Europe. Textile archaeologists are revealing a whole new past about people who, in some cases, are older than Tutankhamen, but much less celebrated. Across northern Europe there are hundreds of bog bodies, who long ago were buried in marshlands and were preserved down the centuries by acidic conditions and lack of oxygen. We will never know all their secrets, but slowly we are discovering more about who they were, and how they lived. It is their textiles that bring us closer to them and tell us, not just about their skills, but also how they thought and designed cloth and clothing. In Denmark more than a hundred marsh bodies have been found - some in extraordinary states of preservation. They date from the late Bronze and early Iron Ages, and are between 1,500 and 3,000 years old. But what some of them are wearing can take us back much further than that, into a time when humans first started to cover their bodies with clothing. For this episode, Jo travelled to the National Museum of Denmark, in Copenhagen, to explore the textiles of two of the world's most famous bog bodies. Don't Panic, Weirdos! TW: photos of mummified remains, death, possible murder & torture, stillbirth, depression, animal abuse Welcome to another episode of KEEP IT WEIRD the podcast for all things strange & unusual, beautiful & batty, creepy & cringe and everything in between! Everytime we get together we chat about something WEIRD and this week we've got quite the adventure for you. Lauren is going to start us off with an UNSOLVED MYSTERY straight out of the BOG. From as far back as the 17th century we have been discovering strangely preserved BODIES in the bogs of Europe, some of which date all the way back to 8000 BC, and no one knows why they are there. The unique physical and biochemical composition of the peat bogs have kept some of these bodies preserved to the point that they still have hair, internal organs and even FOOD (and drugs) in their stomachs. Was this a popular dumping ground for murderers? Was it a holy place used for ritual sacrifice? Did these folks just wander into the bog? We may never know... Then Ashley is taking us DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE for a quest that takes us from Marine Mammal Law all the way to NHI (Non-Human Intelligence) theories as we read some stories about cetaceans, specifically DOLPHINS, and their potential to have special abilities far beyond our understanding. Can they communicate telepathically? Help heal the sick? Act as your doula? Control UFOs? It may sound crazy, but that's because we live in a crazy world. ALSO this episode features our very first WITCHY WEATHER FORECAST hosted by Laura Lareau!! Send us a Text Message.Around 130 bodies have been found in our Irish bogs to date, some male, some female, and children too. Some were thought to be there by accident, perhaps as a result of falling into the bog and drowning. Others were considered to be formal burials, and others appear to be murder or sacrafice. The most famous is known as Cashel Man, who was discovered near Portlaoise in 2011, and at over 4000 years old. He is the oldest European bog body ever found with skin intact. Also discussed are Old Croghan Man from Co. Offaly, and Clonycavan Man from Co. Meath. We're talking about Old Dog and ThunderCats today on the Cryptid Creator Corner as I welcome Declan Shalvey to the podcast. I was lucky enough this past March to celebrate my 45th birthday in Ireland and as part of the celebration go to Dublin Comic Con and meet Declan. I knew once I was back home I had to get Declan on the podcast to chat about comics. We discuss his early days in comics, Dublin Comic Con, plus some of his work like Savage Town, Bog Bodies, Time Before Time, Old Dog, and ThunderCats. It was great hearing about Declan's approach to storytelling, both writing and art. I could have chatted with Declan for another 2 hours, but Penny came upstairs while recording to tell me the laundry room "smells like burning" and I had to wrap things up to investigate. Be sure to check out Declan's website and sign up for his very excellent newsletter. I've been very lucky recently to chat with some of my favorite creators working in comics right now and I think you're going to enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Thundercats from the publisher: Fleeing through space to escape their dying home world, the ThunderCats were attacked en route by their mortal enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. After diverting their damaged flagship to a planet called Third Earth, the surviving ThunderCats now strive to rebuild their society in harmony with the new world's natives. But the Mutants, determined to possess the ThunderCats' mystical gem, the Eye of Thundera, have tracked them down - and they've also forged an alliance with Mumm-Ra, the devil-priest of Third Earth! Now the ThunderCats, led by an inexperienced Lion-O, must band together as never before to protect their legacy from this combined enemy. But will they be able to withstand the onslaught of Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living, once he sets his eyes upon them? The triple-threat talents (writers, artists, and ThunderCats superfans) of DECLAN SHALVEY and DREW MOSS join forces to bring this exciting new entry in the ThunderCats canon to life! Old Dog from the publisher: Jack Lynch was a once-promising CIA operative. On the eve of retirement, looking back at a failed career, he is tasked with one final mission...that goes horribly wrong. He wakes years later to a changed world and deeper changes within him. When a shadow group offers Lynch a second chance at a life of adventure, he's paired with the last person he could ever imagine. In order to adjust, this old dog will have to learn some new tricks... OLD DOG is a striking new spy-fi series by DECLAN SHALVEY, the accomplished and innovative creator behind books such as Moon Knight, X-Men Unlimited, INJECTION, and TIME BEFORE TIME. We tell the tragic history of Betty Corrigall, a young woman buried on the boundary between two parishes. Thanks to Orkney Archives and the National Museum of Scotland for answering some strange questions about bog bodies. Come and see Annie's play! The Wound, the Rag and the In-Between follows a Highland journalist as she unravels a Victorian death. She exposes secrets that had been buried for generations. By the clootie tree, in a place meant for recovery and wellbeing, tragic forces are looming, ever-present. This week the darkness called Kat to cover dead bodies. Specifically the really old ones pickled in bog juice. Then Hayley makes it rain with her lesson on Charles Hatfield, a rainmaker who also made it rain chemicals that smelled of cheese. Still got a thirst for knowledge? You're in luck! We're baaaack...! It's the start of Season Three here at the Podcast, and we're excited to once again be bringing you some weekly-ish discourse on Changeling: the Dreaming. As we proceed chronologically through the game's history, we're now in that wilderness between the end of 2nd edition and the launch of the 20th Anniversary edition. But that doesn't mean there's nothing to say about Changeling and it's place in the World of Darkness. We're talking today about Hunter: the Reckoning, Mummy: the Resurrection, and Demon: the Fallen, three WoD games that were concurrent with the sunset and slumber of the Dreaming. There's limited information with which to suss out how these three splats view and interact with the fae, but we never said we didn't like a challenge. Look who's back! Your favorite podcasters Anya and Autumn! It's been a while but we're excited to get back into pondering. This week we are joined by a special guest (and dear friend of ours) Annaliese to ponder bread, bog bodies, and BBC Merlin. We have wanted to get Annaliese on this podcast for some time now to geek out over the best show in the existence of humanity. So please enjoy this episode where we talk about bread (while Anya and Autumn complain about being gluten-free), learn about bog bodies (they are pretty funky), listen to Annalise share her existential moments when looking at the bog bodies in Ireland, fan girl over Merlin, play a "who said it? game: Merthur or Arwen, and simp over the hottest Merlin characters. This was a fun episode to record so we hope you enjoy listening! Also if you liked the episode (or not) remember to share it with a friend, family member, or enemy, and rate and review us on Apple podcasts (it literally takes 10 seconds)! It helps more people find our show! Time Stamps: Intro: 0:00-1:15, Bread: 1:15-5:46, Bog Bodies: 5:46-19:50, BBC Merlin: 19:50-end Follow us on social media for updates! More and more people are talking about bog bodies! Due to great feedback on our most recent episode we're following up our bog talk with an overview of recent developments in wetland archaeology and an overview of some of the most interesting bog sites in Europe. We dive into our favorite finds that we didn't have time to cover in our last episode, like the morbid battlefield of Alken Enge and the beautiful bog dog of Saxony. We expand our scope to bog bodies outside the Iron Age, exploring corpses deposited in bogs from 9,000 BC up to a late medieval murder mystery. Linked below is the new meta-analysis of hundreds of bog remains we draw from in this episode. Tune into Gladio Free Europe this week for one more dip into the murky mire. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/antiquity/article/bogs-bones-and-bodies-the-deposition-of-human-remains-in-northern-european-mires-9000-bcad-1900/B90A16A211894CB87906A7BCFC0B2FC7
Patreon ----- We get knee-deep in the peat this week to examine the bog body phenomenon. Due to their unusually anaerobic nature, bogs across the world have a remarkable ability to preserve any animal matter that falls into them. The cold and wet climate of Northern Europe has proven especially fruitful for the preservation of human corpses, many of which date back to the iron age and beyond. Generations of scholars have been enchanted by these enigmatic and unnerving corpses, whose flesh and faces are so well-preserved that they look like they could have died next week. Moreover, individual bog burials like the Egtved Girl and the Tollund Man offer unparalleled insights into the lives and typically violent deaths of individual people from the deep past. The existence of these bodies gives a voice to a people who could not read or write, and whose culture is only known from potsherds and petroglyphs and the occasional footnote of a Roman text. At the same time, any true understanding of their lives will always remain beyond our grasp. On this episode of Gladio Free Europe, we show this paradox has tantalized artists, archaeologists, and propagandists for hundreds of years. Join us to see what happens when the dead live again.

For decades, Silicon Valley leaders have been borrowing ideas from science fiction — from the metaverse to the latest tech gadgets. On this week's show, hear why they might need to start reading their source material more closely. Also, why the midterm election results tell us so little about what's coming next in American politics. And a forgotten behemoth of American literature gets a closer look. 1. Paul Waldman [@paulwaldman1], opinion columnist at the Washington Post and senior writer for The American Prospect, on why off-year elections need historical context. Listen. 2. Jill Lepore, Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer; Gene Seymour [@GeneSeymour], culture critic with work in Newsday, the Nation, the Baffler, and more; and Annalee Newitz [@Annaleen], science fiction author and science journalist, on the makings (and potential mishaps) of the metaverse. Listen. 3. Paul Auster, acclaimed novelist and author of Burning Boy: The Life and Work of Stephen Crane, on the 19th century writer's forgotten legacy. Listen. This week we talk about BLUE IN GREEN by Ram V, Anand RK, John Pearson, Aditya Bidikar and Tom Muller. BUT before we talk about Blue in Green, we also catch up on a book previously read, BOG BODIES by Declan Shalvey, Gavin Fullerton, Rebecca Nalty and Clayton Cowles. We talk about what we really enjoy about both books, but also little qualms we had with each title... so basically a book review. Dang, what a blown out way to say we reviewed a couple of comics. Anyway, we also talk about potential ideas on ways we'd like to see each title adapted. Because frankly both comics feel very cinematic in a lot of ways.
