Rockshow episode 205 Can and FaustCan and Faust are two pioneering bands from the Krautrock movement, a genre that emerged in West Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Krautrock is known for blending rock, electronic music, and avant-garde experimentation, influencing many subsequent genres, including post-punk, new wave, and electronic music. Can:• Origin: Cologne, West Germany (1968) • Members: The classic lineup consisted of Holger Czukay (bass), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Damo Suzuki (vocals from 1970 to 1973). • Style: Can's sound is a fusion of psychedelic rock, avant-garde, jazz, and funk with a strong emphasis on improvisation and minimalist rhythms. They often used repetitive grooves and layered textures, creating a hypnotic effect. Their music could range from delicate, ambient passages to wild, chaotic experimentation. • Notable Albums: • Tago Mago (1971): A landmark album known for its experimental sound, long instrumental jams, and Suzuki's unpredictable vocals. • Ege Bamyasi (1972): Featuring more concise and rhythmic songs, with hits like “Vitamin C” and “Spoon.” • Future Days (1973): A more ambient, ethereal record, often seen as a peak of the band's explorative nature. • Influence: Can was highly influential in shaping the experimental rock and electronic scenes, inspiring artists ranging from David Bowie to Radiohead.Faust: • Origin: Wümme, West Germany (1971) • Members: The core lineup included Werner “Zappi” Diermaier (drums), Jean-Hervé Péron (bass), Rudolf Sosna (guitar, keyboards), Arnulf Meifert (drums), and Hans Joachim Irmler (keyboards). • Style: Faust's music is more avant-garde and noise-oriented than Can's. They mixed rock with musique concrète, tape experiments, electronic soundscapes, and dissonant, atonal elements. Their sound often had an anarchic, confrontational edge, pushing the boundaries of what rock music could be. • Notable Albums: • Faust (1971): Their debut, an experimental and highly eclectic album, blending found sounds, noise, and fragmented song structures. • Faust IV (1973): A more accessible but still experimental album, with a mix of rock, ambient soundscapes, and odd time signatures. • The Faust Tapes (1973): Originally sold for a low price, this album was a collage of improvisations, studio experiments, and sound cut-ups. • Influence: Faust is seen as one of the most avant-garde bands of the Krautrock scene, influencing later experimental and industrial music, as well as bands in the post-punk and art-rock genres. Both bands were central to Krautrock's ethos of breaking free from traditional rock structures, emphasizing improvisation, and pushing boundaries with studio technology. While Can leaned more into groove-oriented, hypnotic rhythms, Faust embraced a more radical approach to sound experimentation. For Can:#CanBand #Krautrock #ExperimentalRock #TagoMago #EgeBamyasi #DamoSuzuki #HolgerCzukay #IrminSchmidt #JakiLiebezeit #MichaelKaroli #PsychedelicRock #AvantGarde #MinimalistRock #PostPunkInfluence #FutureDays #GermanRockFor Faust:#FaustBand #Krautrock #AvantGardeRock #ExperimentalMusic #FaustIV #TheFaustTapes #ZappiDiermaier #JeanHervePeron #HansJoachimIrmler #MusiqueConcrete #NoiseRock #GermanUnderground #ArtRock #IndustrialMusicInfluence #FaustExperimentation

Roti! Reibekuchen!” (2024) de Brian Eno, Holger Czukay y J.Peter Schwalm, “After the Heat” (1978) de Eno, Moebius & Roedelius en un tema en el que colabora Czukay y “Drawn from Life” (2001) de Eno con Schwalm. “Sushi! Roti!
The story of Can continues this week diving into the magical combination of drummer Jaki Liebezeit & bassist / producer Holger Czukay, the origins of Sampling, and the recording of the group's breakthrough experimental record Tago Mago.

Formed in 1968, the German group Can's founding members included Irmin Schmidt and Holger Czukay who had both studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen. Joined by jazz drummer Jaki Liebezeit, guitarist Michael Karoli and Japanese vocalist Damo Suzuki for the group's 'classic' line-up that recorded Tago Mago (1971) and Ege Bamyasi (1972), their fourth album - Future Days - saw them exploring a more ambient, blissed-out sound, in contrast to their previous releases. Matthew Sweet is joined by musicians Jah Wobble and Gwenno, novelist Alan Warner and cultural historian Mererid Puw Davies to take a deep dive into the album and explore the blend of influences that made Can such a unique musical proposition.Producer: Torquil MacLeodAn expanded edition of Jah Wobble's autobiography Dark Luminosity: Memoirs of a Geezer is out on 7th March.
Jah Wobble - aka John Wardle - wrote ‘Dark Luminosity: Memoirs of a Geezer' in 2009. It's just been reworked, expanded and republished and it's well worth reading, full of detail about growing up in the East End, unexploded bombs, pickling factories, grim schooldays, record shops and clubs, the bands he saw and his arrival at Kingsway College where he met John Lydon and Sid Vicious and became a cornerstone of the punk rock inner circle. And then two challenging years as the bassist of Public Image Ltd, the time he worked as a train driver and ticket collector for London Transport, a series of collaborations – Brian Eno, Baaba Maal, Holger Czukay, Sinead O'Connor, Chaka Demus – and some bold and original solo albums (you'll enjoy Island Records' reaction when he pitches an album based on the poems of William Blake). Among this podcast's highlights … … the Kafkaesque world of working for the London Underground in the days when you could “punch an area manager and not get sacked”. … why great rhythm sections are like great football players. … his dad, an El-Alamein survivor, on seeing Mick Jagger on Top of the Pops: “the Rolling Stones should be used for mine clearance.” … Public Image Ltd – “three of the weirdest people you could ever meet”, the band that kept their cash in a shoebox. … “you can't go through life as a tourist”. … the secret of the perfect bass sound. … watching the first Sex Pistols' rehearsal. … seeing Bob Marley & the Wailers at the Lyceum. … the record that reversed his dislike of the Beatles. … why working with Pharoah Sanders was the highlight of his musical life. … his 2023 album, ‘The Bus Routes of South London'. … Jim Reeves, Burl Ives and further sounds of the family homestead. ... and a powerful aversion to hippies. This week we're discussing the remaining albums by German krautrock pioneers CAN. Be sure to check out our first episode on this band where we detail the years with Malcom Mooney and Damo Suzuki. This era chronicles the awkward and strange later years, where guitarist Michael Karoli takes over vocals, as well as where bassist and founding member Holger Czukay leaves the band. No figure loomed larger over Krautrock, as a genre, than legendary producer/ sound engineer Konrad "Conny" Plank ... and we've been looking for an opportunity to talk about him. Then we discovered the Rastakraut Pasta LP that he and Dieter Moebius recorded and released in 1980. Problem solved! From behind the board in Cologne's Rhenus Studio and then his own converted farmhouse in Wolperath, Plank put on tape some (most?) of the best German kosmische and electronic music of the '70s. From there he went on to develop the sound signatures of post-punk acts like Devo, Eurythmics, and Ultravox.Gone too soon at age 47, Plank is (and damn well should be) remembered as Krautrock's Midwife. Join us as we explore his life and career and then go track by track through Rastakraut Pasta on Episode 16 of CBK!
We interrupt this podcast's regularly scheduled programming for a SPECIAL REPORT:We've made a Krautrock Playlist. The original idea was to have a "song draft": having dug deep enough into Krautrock, we would take turns claiming songs for ourselves. We figured this way we'd learn what each of us likes in particular, and what we like best. What happened is we came up with a list of 44 songs -- FORTY-FOUR -- that generally holds together not just as a cohesive cross-section of the genre (with apologies to Popol Vuh), but also as one hell of a mix to queue up on Spotify.Did we hit all the good stuff? Hell, no, and we know we have much more to learn and explore. But we made a good start. Some stats, for those who are interested:Song counts by artist: Can (7!), Kraftwerk (5), Neu! (5), Faust (4), Harmonia (4), La Düsseldorf (4), Amon Düül II (2), Cluster (2), Guru Guru (2), Moebius + Plank (2), Agitation Free (1), Amon Düül (1), Ash Ra Tempel (1), Brainticket (1), Holger Czukay (1), Tangerine Dream (1), Xhol Caravan (1).Song counts by credited musicians: Klaus Dinger (11), Holger Czukay (10), Michael Rother (10), Dieter Moebius (8), Hans-Joachim Roedelius (6).

In the year 1979, Can founder and AM radio enthusiast, Holger Czukay, released his 2nd album. Being of the Stockhausen school of music, Czukay used a snippets of shortwave radio recordings and painstaking built songs around them. The album is a triumph of primitive sampling and deserves to be heard. Let's talk Holger Czukay, Movies!

Did anybody see this snowman, standing in the wind alone? Damo did ... and Holger, Irmin, Jaki, and Michael, too.Today we're talking about Can — and specifically, their 1971 double LP, Tago Mago. John Cale, "I Am the Walrus," and Aleister Crowley get their due, but in this end this is all about the mad genius of five men jamming in a castle. We are all mushroomheads.

Jarmel Reitz is a Philly-based artist, font of sunshine and rainbows, and convicted felon. Here she tells the intimate story of her arrest over 16 pounds of cannabis and her subsequent experiences in jail, where she received a radicalizing education in systemic dehumanization and white privilege. This conversation was originally recorded and briefly released in 2018 before we took it offline. Today, on what would have been her release date from prison if not for a plea bargain extended because of her whiteness, Jarmel decided it was time to make this conversation public. It is more prescient than ever as we collectively grapple with deep inequity and systemic violence against people of color and those without resources. From her teen years experimenting with drugs in Jersey through incarceration in Chicago, Jarmel radiates a fundamental devotion to radical acceptance and self expression that is infectious and liberating. Find Jarmel at www.jarmelbyjarmel.com and IG @jarmelbyjarmel. More podcasts where podcasts are found, at MauraJames.com and IG @maurajames. Damo Suzuki left Japan in his late teens and busked around Europe, attracting the attention of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of the band Can. Suzuki became their lead vocalist from 1970 to 1973, writing and singing on the band’s most enduring albums. In 1983, he returned to music-making to front Damo Suzuki’s Network, traveling the world to improvise and record with local bands. Here, he discusses his philosophy on “instant composing,” spirituality in making music and more.

As is usually the case with these mixes, one song sets me on the path towards a new collection. In this case it was the song T by Dan Lissvik. https://danlissvik.bandcamp.com/track/t It keep popping up on a few of my playlists and I always thought it had kind of kraut rock feel to it. I realized that I've never made a kraut rock mix and that needs to be rectified. I don't want to get into a debate about what is and isn't kraut rock. There are tracks from kraut rock classics like Neu! and Can. But there are also three cuts from new artists like Dan Lissvik, Sankt Otten and Kilchhofer. Those new tunes are in there because I thought they fit with the kraut rock vibe. The rest of the mix contains artists like Cluster, Ashra, Popol Vuh, Holger Czukay, Conrad Schnitzler, Bernard Szajner and Gunter Schickert. I'm exactly sure which ones would qualify as kraut rock but I think they're all close enough. Cheers! This week saw the sad death of Can founder Holger Czukay. As well as a fitting tribute to the wonderful krautrock legend, we've got tunes so eclectic we hope he'd approve. From groovy Israeli sounds from Markey Funk to gothic lute music from Jozef Van Wissem via metal, Japanese trips, soothing hiphop, Scottish pop, and a load of synth-led goodness, this week is a fun one in sad times.
