The Allman Brothers Band, established in 1969 in Georgia, stands as a cornerstone of Southern rock and American music history. Founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, the band was instrumental in blending rock, blues, jazz, and country music into a genre-defining sound. Their innovative use of dual lead guitars and extended improvisational jams set them apart, creating a live experience that was both powerful and deeply emotional. Tragically, Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 was a devastating blow, but the band soldiered on, with guitarist Dickey Betts stepping up as a leading creative force. The subsequent album, Eat a Peach (1972), featured both live and studio tracks. Throughout the 70s, the Allman Brothers Band produced a series of critically acclaimed albums, intertwining guitar lines earned them a massive following. However, the late 70s brought internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and the death of bassist Berry Oakley, leading to several breakups and reunions. The band experienced a resurgence in the late 80s and 90s and officially disbanded in 2014. During this time Gregg Allman shared a complex and evolving relationship with his son, Devon. Born in 1972 Devon grew up largely separated from his famous father due to Gregg's demanding career and his battle with substance abuse. Despite this distance, Devon was profoundly influenced by his father's music and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. As Devon grew, he pursued his own path in music, forming the band Honeytribe and later joining the Royal Southern Brotherhood. Despite their time apart, music became a bridge between father and son. Gregg and Devon reconnected and shared the stage at various times. Following Gregg's death in 2017, Devon continued to carry the torch of Southern rock through The Allman Betts Band, a group he formed with Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. The Allman Betts Band re-captures the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the chemistry between Devon and Duane is palpable. Their collaboration is not just a continuation of their family legacies but a creative partnership that has revitalised the Southern rock genre for the modern era. The accomplished songwriter, guitarist, and record producer reflects on cutting his teeth with his father's band, The Allman Brothers, and blazing his own path.
Devon Allman grew up in Texas and Missouri, and didn't meet his father, Gregg Allman, until he was a teenager. A simple letter brought the two of them together, and before long Devon was going on tour with the Allman Brothers Band—and getting to know his dad. In another twist of fate, he met his longtime collaborator Duane Betts, whose father, Dicky Betts, was also a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. Now the two are performing, recording, and writing songs together. Devon joins Sid to talk about what it was like growing up with the Allman Brothers Band, as well as the unique relationship he had with his father. Plus, he'll share about his recent marriage and how his long friendship with Duane Betts eventually led to the Allman Family Revival Tour. #981 - Devon Allman The Devon Allman Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? We look at “here” as more than a place or time. It's a state of mind, and right now “here” goes by the more formal title: The Paul Leslie Hour. Okay, so we've got a very short interview from the archives with a prolific live and recording artist Devon Allman. Some of you are familiar with Devon Allman. He's created as a solo recording artist, but also with the Allman Betts Band and the Royal Southern Brotherhood This interview was originally broadcast on the radio in 2007. At that time, Devon Allman was the front man for the band Honeytribe. They had just released their debut album “Torch.” This was a band creating art outside of the mainstream music business. Paul enjoyed the album and described Honeytribe being “for those who like what music is all about.” The band's sound could be described as a premium blend of rock, blues, instrumentals, and even reggae. As for Devon…you could say Devon Allman has music in his blood. His father, the late, legendary Gregg Allman once called him “a chip off of the old block.” But we think Devon Allman's style is distinctly his own. You'll enjoy Devon Allman's perspectives on the music business, and the message he is trying to send to all who listen. We've got even more interviews just like this. You can help make this show possible. Just go right here, and we thank you. And now, let's hear what Devon had to say when he called in to chat with Paul for a bit. Do you agree?

Duane Betts joins me on the show today. Duane is the son of the innovative guitarist and songwriter from the Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts, and while he's certainly a chip off the ol' block, Duane has his own thing going on and has finally just released his debut solo album “Wild & Precious Life”. It's an inspired and engaging record - sort of a modern take on southern rock that's unique and definitely has some of the Betts family sound but it's also a great display of a killer band in fine form. Before he was writing and singing his own songs, Duane was a guitar slinger for hire and spent some time in the band Dawes, played with Phil Lesh and Friends, Dickey's band Great Southern, and has had other bands like Backbone69 as well as a band with a few of the other Allman Bros offspring, including Berry Oakley Jr and Devon Allman - called The Allman Betts Band. After those various projects ran their course, it left Duane the time to focus on writing his own music, and after a casual conversation with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, he was offered their studio to record these new songs in. I saw Duane recently at the Grand Ol' Opry and he and his band did a killer mini-set there. They're going to be out playing all over the place in the coming months, so make sure you go and see them live and pick up the new album. We had a great conversation about all of this stuff and got deep into the process of recording his new album, guitar tones, his history with his own band and the legacy of the Allman Brothers. MoxieMoments brings you Samantha Fish, Contemporary Blues Artist-Bourbon & Beyond, on what Moxie means to her. “You should always get outside of the box,” Samantha Fish says while discussing her boundary-breaking new album Belle of the West. “Challenging yourself is how you grow.” After launching her recording career in 2009, Samantha Fish quickly established herself as a rising star in the contemporary blues world. Since then, the charismatic young singer-guitarist-songwriter has earned a reputation as a rising guitar hero and powerful live performer while releasing a series of acclaimed albums showing her restless creative spirit, consistently taking her in new and exciting musicals directions. The New York Times called Fish “an impressive blues guitarist who sings with sweet power” and “one of the genre's most promising young talents.” Her hometown paper, The Kansas City Star, noted, “Samantha Fish has kicked down the door of the patriarchal blues club” and observed that the young artist “displays more imagination and creativity than some blues veterans exhibit throughout their careers.” Having already made it clear that she's more interested in following her heart than she is in repeating past triumphs, Samantha Fish delivers some of her most compelling music to date with Belle of the West, her fifth studio album. The deeply soulful, personally charged 11-song set showcases Fish's sublime acoustic guitar skills as well as her rootsy, emotionally resonant songwriting. Such memorable new originals as “American Dream,” “Blood in the Water,” “Need You More,” and “Don't Say You Love Me” demonstrate the artist's knack for organic Americana songcraft. At the same time, a trio of cover tunes—R.L. Burnside's “Poor Black Mattie,” Lillie Mae's “Nearing Home,” and the Jimbo Mathus-penned title track—attest to her considerable interpretive skills as well as her varied musical interests. “To me, this is a natural progression,” Fish notes. “It's a storytelling record by a girl who grew up in the Midwest. It's very personal. I focused on the songwriting and vocals, the melodies and emotion, and bringing another dimension to what I do. I wasn't interested in shredding on guitar, although we ended up with a few heavier tracks. I love Mississippi blues; there's something very soulful and authentic about that style of music, so this was a chance to immerse myself in that.” Fish recorded Belle of the West in the relaxed, rural creative atmosphere of the legendary Zebra Ranch Studios in the North Hills of Mississippi with producer Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi Allstars fame). She worked previously on her 2015 album Wild Heart. The studio team included some of the region's most iconoclastic musicians, including Dickinson, solo artist and Jack White associate Lillie Mae (whose distinctive vocals are featured on “Nearing Home”), much-traveled juke- joint blues artist Lightnin' Malcolm (whose featured on “Poor Black Mattie”), Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus, upright bassist and beloved solo artist Amy LaVere, Tikyra Jackson, Trina Raimey and Shardé Thomas, granddaughter of the legendary Southern bluesman Otha Turner. “I wanted to do this acoustic-electric record and tap into the style and swagger of Mississippi,” Fish states, adding, “Any time you dive into another place, another vibe and a new group of people, you're challenging yourself to grow musically. I felt very at home at a Zebra Ranch, and I've known Luther and Malcolm for years, so it was a very comfortable situation. When you're making a record like this, it has to feel natural if you want people to respond to it. Belle of the West follows on the heels of Fish's March 2017 release Chills & Fever, which achieved top 10 status in the Billboard Blues charts. Here she expanded her stylistic arsenal to take on a set of lesser-known vintage R&B gems, with help from members of garage-soul stalwarts the Detroit Cobras. “Having these two very different records come out back to back this year has been liberating,” says Samantha. The creative drive that fuels Belle of the West and Chills & Fever has been a crucial element of Samantha Fish's approach from the beginning. Growing up in a musical family in Kansas City, Missouri, she became obsessed with music early in life, taking up drums before switching to guitar at 15. By the time she was 20, she had formed her trio and self-released her first album. She soon caught the ear of the renowned blues label Ruf Records, which in 2011 released Girls with Guitars, which teamed her with fellow axewomen, Cassie Taylor and Dani Wilde. The same year saw Ruf release Fish's solo studio debut, Runaway. The album was named Best Artist Debut at the 2012 Blues Music Awards in Memphis. Black Wind Howlin' (2013) and Wild Heart (2015) followed, winning considerable critical acclaim and further establishing Fish as a prominent presence in the blues community. Wild Heart reached the top slot on Billboard's blues chart. She also collaborated with blues-rock veterans Jimmy Hall and Reese Wynans on The Healers' 2013 project. In addition, she jammed onstage with blues icon Buddy Guy and guested on Devon Allman's album Turquoise. Fish continues to maintain the same hardworking, prolific approach that's carried her this far. “I think I've always had that,” she says. “Music is my life, so what other choice do I have but to go out and make music? We do tour quite a bit, and maybe it's kind of crazy to put out two dramatically different albums in one year. But I like to work hard. This is who I am, and this is what I do, and when I'm writing and recording and touring is when I feel the most like myself. And now we have a moment where people are paying attention, so I have to make the most of it. I feel like I have a lot to say right now, so why not say it?” Her musical future is an open road as far as Samantha Fish is concerned. “I'm never gonna be a traditional blues artist because that's not who I am,” she asserts. “But it's all the blues for me. When Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf came out, what they were doing didn't sound like anything done in blues before. So you have to keep that kind of fire and spirit. I will never do Muddy Waters better than Muddy Waters, so I have to be who I am and find my best voice.

Devon Allman has quickly established himself as one of Southern Rock's best frontmen. He began his musical journey as a teenager, meeting his dad, the legendary southern rocker Greg Allman, at 16. Along with Duane Betts, the son of Allman Brothers band member Dickey Betts, they formed The Allman Betts Band. The group's soulful, blues-based sound is reminiscent of their father's yet contains an original vibe not felt in years by true Southern Rock fans. I caught up with Devon while working on projects in his St. Louis area studio between tour dates. In late July, they begin the Spirit of the South Tour with Blackberry Smoke. Their latest album, Bless Your Heart, was released in 2020.
Devon Allman and Berry Oakley Jr. discuss the upcoming tour, the latest album, the songs, the opening band that Devon just signed to his record label, River Kittens, his heirloom guitar strap (that belonged to his uncle Duane) and much more. [...]
When Devon Allman was 20 years old, he was playing a gig at one of the largest outdoor venues in St. Louis, his hometown, and the reception was not what he had hoped. The son of Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Gregg Allman – a principle architect of American Classic Rock – Devon discussed his frustrations and fears with his mother, Shelley Jefts. She calmly reminded him that, “not everyone is going to like you.” That guidance helped Devon put the pressure of being the son of one of the great rock music icons behind him, which is easier said than done. Since then, he's built a sturdy career with several solo records and in bands like Honeytribe and the Royal Southern Brotherhood – traversing across the globe and entertaining millions. But in 2018, when he formed the critically-acclaimed Allman Betts Band with fellow Allman Brothers Band offspring Duane Betts and Berry Duane Oakley, Devon finally felt like he was home. As he put it to me on the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast, he had spent "20 years couch surfing and finally bought a house." Allman Betts released its first record, “Down to the River,” in 2019. Then in 2020, the band released its follow up effort, “Bless Your Heart.” Both albums were well-received and Allman Betts' following continues to grow as COVID restrictions being to lift and the gates prepare to bust wide open for live music once again. Devon digs deep discussing his career, meeting the father he met for the first time at age 16, the music that hooked him into becoming an artist, and his hopes of using his new record label to launch one star annually until his days are numbered. So listen up. Devon Allman has a lot to say. Enjoy!
Cyril Neville's career was launched when he joined his brother Art's band - The Meters, in 1970. His percussion and vocal skills added a new dimension to the band. From there brothers Aaron and Charles teamed with Art and Cyril to form the Grammy-award winning group, The Neville Brothers, in 1977. In 1998 Cyril released the first of 4 solo albums and then in 2012 formed Royal Southern Brotherhood (RSB) with Devon Allman, Mike Zito and other world-class musicians. In our June of 2012 interview, award-winning program director Ray White catches up with Cyril to talk about the newly formed Royal Southern Brotherhood band and their initial release. He also elaborates about his solo effort - Brand New Blues. RSB's latest project is titled Don't Look Back. In our showcase segment, Coool CAT's Lisa Davis features blues/rock musician Tinsley Ellis. With nearly 20 albums to his credit, this blazin' guitarist recently released Ice Cream In Hell, another stellar album in his repertoire.
