We're podcasting per the launch of the World Cup-tracking Probability Cup, but of course, just had to talk about Wednesday night's NBA Finals classic. The BIG question on my mind: Should predictors/gamblers price in the NBA's massive incentive to make this great series continue? Topics!* Knicks–Spurs Finals comeback analysis and whether San Antonio collapsed or New York surged.* How teams should manage volatility differently when protecting large leads versus playing from behind.* Debate over NBA referee incentives, league interests, and the possibility of series-extension bias.* SportsPredict's World Cup Probability Cup and using prediction contests to identify analytical talent.* Whether modern hiring should adopt a “Moneyball” approach by measuring forecasting skill instead of relying on traditional credentials.* Is the big money in studying idiot sports predictors or geniuses?Again, join our Probability Cup contest and perhaps win an iPad Pro ($1,000 value) or $200 Ticketmaster gift card. "Seventy-five percent of Iran's urban population was on the streets. That's not a protest—that's a nation." Iran's struggle is not abstract or distant—it is a real-time confrontation between courage and tyranny. When people are willing to face armed forces with nothing but conviction, it signals something deeper than protest. It reveals a collective refusal to live without dignity, and a belief that history can still be bent by human will. Change, when it comes, is never clean—but it always begins when fear loses its grip. Steve Kuhn brings a unique perspective shaped by military service, global intelligence networks, and firsthand experience inside political movements across Europe. He outlines why Iran has reached a breaking point, how external pressures and internal unity intersect, and why global silence has only intensified the stakes. His insights frame Iran not as an isolated crisis, but as part of a larger geopolitical realignment unfolding simultaneously across the world. Steve is a former U.S. soldier, international entrepreneur, political strategist, and founder of the Take America Back movement. Having lived in ten countries and built businesses across continents, he now focuses on citizen leadership, geopolitical analysis, and mobilizing principled action at the grassroots level. The NFL Playoffs, With a Scoreboard That Actually MattersIn this pod, I discuss an exciting reveal: The official NFL Playoffs House of Strauss contest! Beyond the contest, Sports Predict co-founder Steve Kuhn and I also get into our nerdy NFL strategy obsessions and whether the league is starting to mirror the “mixed strategy” approach that took the poker world by storm. But, once again, ladies and gentlemen, we've an NFL Playoffs SportsPredict.com contest for all of you. It's all upside, no downside. We are doing sports prediction, not gambling addiction. Okay, it's a little addictive. But I digress. The point is you just have to make picks, with no capital risked. Come one, come all, see if you can predict your way to some generous prizes. From Sports Predict: The NFL postseason strips things down. Fewer games, tighter decisions, less margin for error. If you want to know how good your reads actually are, this is the moment.HoS is running a dedicated NFL postseason prediction challenge. Each playoff game comes with ten prediction markets. You can answer as many or as few as you want. There's no penalty for skipping, and scoring is based purely on accuracy. There are two ways to compete.Predictions across all rounds count toward an overall postseason leaderboard, while each playoff round also has its own standalone competition. You can jump in late and still win a round. The prize structure follows that format: a $1,000 prize for the overall postseason champion, plus additional prizes for Wild Card weekend, the Divisional round, the Conference Championships, and the Super Bowl. It's a straightforward way to engage the playoffs without betting mechanics, just decision-making under pressure.Link to the Event: https://play.sportspredict.com/LobbyDetails?id=f067dad7-cff5-46c4-8680-92faea924561&eventId=95c1be3f-7927-4a9f-8f0b-2bdc6259caf2Thanks to everyone who joined in on the Sports Predict contests this season and look forward to playing you over these next few weeks. Members of the House of Strauss community are, as noted, invited to do our NBA season over/unders contest over at Sports Predict. Personally, I am agonizing over the Warriors and their O/U of 46.5. We discuss this in the pod with Steve, plus other NBA trend subjects. Topics include…* Shoutout to Sid Kali for winning last week in NFL picks. Email me at houseofstrauss@substack.com if you wish to collect a prize* What's my overall strategy for making NBA picks now that I'm not deep in the weeds?* Steve is trying to break the NBA with an idea that, in my opinion, broke the MLB* The Rockets' style is gaining traction, but is it good for the sport? * That Houston Rockets O/U* I have a non analytical reason to love the Orlando Magic OVER* Steve and I disagree on the Lakers* Is weather is a HUGE underrated influence on quarterback performance?Oh, and again, details for entering the contest: The NBA Smart Predictor ChallengeThink you've got one of the sharpest NBA minds around? Here's your chance to prove it — and maybe pocket up to $1,000 while doing what you already love: thinking deeply about basketball. How It WorksThis is the Season Win Totals Challenge — a simple but revealing test of who really understands the league. You'll see the projected win totals for all 30 NBA teams for the 2025–26 season.Your job: for each team, pick Over or Under. Before the first game begins of the season begins. That's it.Scoring• Winner: Whoever gets the most correct picks.• Tie-breaker: If multiple people nail the same number of teams, we go to total net wins differential — meaning how right you were and by how much. Congrats to Mr. ZigZag for winning our NFL Week 4 contest on sportspredict.com. What's his prize? Well, should he choose to accept it, it's a 30 minute phone conversation with yours truly. That's right. You win a week, we talk on the phone, about whatever you'd like. So ZigZag and future Week winners: Email me at houseofstrauss@substack.com if this prize is appealing, though I completely understand if it is not. This week's pod with Steve was a fascinating look at how this season's NFL kickoff change has turbocharged the value of a select few kickers. Are these unsung peripheral performers actually now among the sport's most valuable players? Could such a thing be true? We get into that, plus secrets behind my unsustainably high SMART score, the “Death of Expertise,” and whether the ability to predict truly equals expertise. Enjoy!Oh and I should mention that we'll be discussing some of these topics and more on the BCC Chat. House of Strauss is a reader-supported publication. Loving the NFL tournament we're doing at SportsPredict.com, headed up by Steve Kuhn (even if Brandon Aubrey's leg kicked away my dreams). Given that Steve's got an incredible mind for market inefficiencies, I want him here, regularly, to tell us what everyone else is missing about America's favorite sport. Join up still to test out how you fare against myself and Steve, a guy who ran a $14 billion hedge fund. To enter the House of Strauss Lobby, password is HOS.In this pod we discussed, among other matters…* What's the effect of the new NFL kickoff rules that Donald Trump hates?* My “I don't know anything and neither do YOU” picks strategy* The impact of kickoff rules on 4th down decision making* Onside kicks used to be MONEY* Minnesota did a CRAZY white flag punt* Should a coach employ trick plays based on randomness?* What trends are we seeing early?* House of Strauss subscribers and Chat BCC participants are really…SMART? * Micah Parsons' successful impact in Green Bay* Why does Kyle Shanahan want a predictable running back over a talented running back?House of Strauss is a reader-supported publication. So, like many of you, I love thinking about games, probabilities and market inefficiencies. And, like many of you, I have profound reservations with regard to the sports betting conquest of America. With that in mind, I'm proud to announce a new sponsor at House of Strauss: Sportspredict.com. The goal of my new advertiser is to host a place for sports predictions that isn't gambling. There are no bets made here, but there are picks. The idea is to compete and demonstrate predictive ability absent insidious financial downside. I encourage HoS subscribers to join the NFL picks pool this season, free of charge, and compete for a prize (to be determined later). If nothing else, you can demonstrate NFL intellectual superiority over an idiot who liked Dallas' Micah Parsons trade. Oh, and access code is: HOS.Steve is the founder of this company but I wouldn't have him on just due to that. He's also a House of Strauss subscriber, and lurker in the BCC Chat. Put simply, he's one of us. He's prone to novel theories of his own and believes that a lot of money is left on the table by our most prominent sports franchises. In this pod we discuss topics that include, but aren't limited to…* The appeal of a non gambling sports prediction site* What makes for a good predictor? * My two NFL picks in Week 1, and the market inefficiencies targeted with them* NFL coaches are still committing 4th down malpractice* Major college coaches are still committing “Go for 2” malpractice* Steve's “Fourth and Smart” idea that could revolutionize special teams play* NBA teams are declining in “2 for 1” usage* Steve loves the BCC ChatHouse of Strauss is a reader-supported publication. Darek Oles (Oleszkiewicz) was born on February 20, 1963 in Wroclaw, Poland. At the age of five Oles began his music education at the State Music School in Wroclaw. Piano was his first instrument, but later he played guitar, electric bass and finally at eighteen years old, he switched to accoustic bass. While in his teens he played with amateur groups, evolving in popular music styles from rock, blues, jazz-rock to straight ahead jazz. In the early 1980's, Oles participated in various jazz festivals and national competitions for young musicians. In 1983, he was the most awarded musician at the Jazz Juniors in Cracow, winning the first individual prize, first prize for jazz composition and a second prize in jazz combo category. Later that year Oles was invited by Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, a jazz legend in Poland, to join saxophonist's quartet on tour.In the following five years Darek Oles was working steadily with some of the best jazz bands in the country such as: Zbigniew Namyslowski Quartet, Tomasz Szukalski Quartet, Henryk Majewski Quintet, Wojciech Karolak Trio and Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio and Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski Quartet. With those groups he recorded for Polish Jazz, Polskie Nagrania, East Wind and also for the radio and television in Poland and abroad. Darek was touring extensively in Poland, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Cuba, Mexico and performed at major festivals, concerts and jazz club venues. In 1988, Darek Oles arrived in Los Angeles with a simple plan in mind: to broaden his musical horizon. One year later he received a full scholarship from California Institute Of The Arts and began studies with the legendary bassist Charlie Haden. After graduation in 1992, he accepted a teaching position at the Institute, where he has been conducting jazz ensembles and teaching bass ever since. Since 2002 Oles has been a jazz faculty member at the University Of California in Irvine.Aside from his teaching duties, Darek Oles has been very active as a performer and became one of the most sought after bass players on the West Coast. “Oles” (his American nick-name) had the opportunity to perform and record with the greatest masters in jazz. A partial list of his collaborations include: Brad Mehldau, Billy Higgins, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Eddie Henderson, Charles Lloyd, John Abercrombie, Bennie Maupin, Lee Konitz, Peter Erskine, Alan Pasqua, Bennie Wallace, Victor Lewis, Harvey Mason, Dave Grusin, Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, James Newton, Arthur Blythe, Lew Tabackin, Steve Kuhn, Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber, Billy Hart, Kevin Hays, Munyungo Jackon, Steve Hass, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Marian McPartland, Janis Siegel, Bob Brookmeyer, Curtis Fuller, Roy McCurdy, Tom Harrell, Larry Goldings, Bill Stewart, Chris Potter, Kei Akagi, Billy Childs, Bob Sheppard, Joe LaBarbera, Bill Cunliffe, Patrice Rushen, Bennie Golson, Piotr Baron, Teri Lynn Carrington, Buddy De Franco, Terry Gibbs, Anthony Wilson Nonet and Los Angeles Jazz Quartet.Moods in Freedom on SpotifySupport the showInstagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA / View More Episodes
As a young adult Burt Bacharach used fake IDs to get into 52nd Street jazz clubs to have his mind blown away by heroes of the bebop revolution like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Those early impressions could not but leave a mark in his sophisticated pop songs, seeds that would later make those very same songs blossom in the hands of jazz players, going full circle. As a composer and songwriter he had a remarkable gift for combining simplicity and complexity, the African roots of jazz R&B and soul with the European classical influences of French impressionism. The result were the unforgettable melodies he was admired for, many of which are featured in this playlist, as interpreted by a wide ranging of progressive musicians. The playlist features Larry Goldings, Harry Allen; Toots Thielemans; Gabor Szabo; Isaac Hayes; Dee Dee Bridgewater; Charles Lloyd; Bill Frisell; Dionne Farris, Charlie Hunter; Steve Kuhn; Marie Mcauliffe; Benjamin Koppel. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/17011710/Mondo-Jazz (from "The Look of Love" onward). Happy listening!

Welcome to this Outside The Boards special podcast edition, with your host Danny O'Leary. My guest on this podcast episode is Bob Puetz, who you all might know as the United States Polo Association's former CEO and General Manager of the Santa Barbara and San Diego Polo Clubs. Bobby is originally from the Chicago western suburbs. Oak Brook was responsible for opening almost all of the doors for Bobby having played in Oak Brook for well over a decade beginning in the late 70's to the early 90's before taking his career out west. Bobby began playing in his teens after begging Steve Kuhn. Bobby would fall in love with the game immediately and later became a pro for Tom Wigdahl along with his sons John and David which began his career at Oak Brook. Thank you in advance for your support and helping to preserve the club's history and importance in the global polo community.ABOUT OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™In 2012, Outside The Boards™ founders witnessed their first polo match and were stunned by the sport's beauty and brutality. Few sports, if any, have these combined qualities. The sport's grace, intensity and "war like" imagery creates a shock and awe viewing experience like non other. Combine this with sport's party-like atmosphere and lifestyle and you have a recipe for success.Today, the sport has yet to experience its full potential. The industry is fragmented, riddled with politics and in-experience. Outside The Boards™ was designed to change all that and bring clarity to the sport by introducing best practices, insights, trends, and consulting services to industry stakeholders and interested brands so that they can reach their marketing potential and better navigate the sport.

This playlist was only difficult to make in terms of fitting in all we wanted to, as Norway is especially bursting with contemporary music of all types, but we also got in a couple older tunes to pay the originators their due. A lot of interesting interplay between American and Norwegian artists on the playlist as well.
We love doing the Major Scale because it's a great opportunity to work with brilliant artists of today and tomorrow, as well as the some of our heroes from the past. In this episode we get both: Sarathy Korwar and Steve Kuhn. There's a renaissance happening in jazz worldwide, and drummer Sarathy Korwar is one of the leading voices in the UK. Within a year he's offered us two brilliant releases in My East Is Your West and More Arriving. The first, as the title suggests, is an Eastern take on a selection of overlooked Western tunes by the likes of Joe Henderson, Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim, Don Cherry, plus more. The second will make you stop in your tracks – a song cycle of nu-skool jazz plugged through the outlet of dance electronica and a collection of poets, griots, and MCs from India's growing music scene. The result is a joyful and socially aware noise. Steve Kuhn has been a leading voice since he arrived on the scene in early 1960s. Whether in his own prolific output or his numerous collaborations as an accompanist for the likes of Coltrane, Getz, and Oliver Nelson, it's no argument that Kuhn is one of the greats. Blessed with a gift for the melodic and an adventurous command of the piano, you can't help but picture his fingers dance in delight across the keyboard when listening to one of his compositions. As to be expected, his latest album, To And From The Heart, is stunning in effect and sadly may be his last!! Kuhn put some time aside to talk about it with us. ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between. ABOUT KYLE EAGLE (Host): Kyle Eagle has been a contributing writer and producer for the NPR-WBGO, WUCF, WPRK, Wax Poetics, The Orlando Weekly, Artbourne, and The Fiscal Times, as well as several music and film releases- Light in the Attic's documentary "This Is Gary McFarland", and an upcoming film on composer Jack Nietzsche. Recordings- Call Me-Jack Wilson, Live at the Penthouse, Grachan Moncur III, Chico Hamilton, and Andy Bey. ABOUT CHRIS BARANYI (Producer): Chris Baranyi is a sound engineer and music producer. He splits his time between designing AV systems for theme parks and recording music. Chris has worked with many Orlando area musicians with backgrounds in jazz, fusion, hip-hop, funk, new age, and classical. Some of which have been featured on NPR's Echoes. His passion includes jazz, vintage microphones, and hot sauce.
