Ok. Full transparency. I started the podcast by opening with a clip of Russel Crowe bellowing, "Are you not entertained?!" to honor our 300th episode. I forgot that clip is not from the movie "300." It's Gladiator. Eric, Willie, and I talk about the milestone that is our 300th episode, how the podcast got started, and a few interesting podcasting stats. Then we came to visit the hospital that is the current SF Giants clubhouse. Lee, Soler, Conforto, Winn, Slater, Ahmed, Murphy...all injured. There are 7 players on the current roster that were playing for Sacramento less than two weeks ago. And they have to compete with the All Star Dodgers? But hey, they just signed Curt Casali and an outfielder from the Mexican league! This team is certainly not performing the way we expected, and things could get much worse with all of these injuries. The good news is they are only 2.5 games out of the third wild card spot. On to the next 100 episodes!www.torturecast.com@torturecastfacebook.com/torturecast

The Cincinnati Reds roster picture is clearing up now that they've sent down Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Elly De La Cruz, and Matt McLain. The position players look set with Joey Votto at first base and Kevin Newman, TJ Friedl, Chad Pinder, Luke Maile, and Curt Casali making up the bench. The pitching is a little harder to predict as to what the Reds will do...but a familiar face we never want to see again may be in the fold. Brandon Williamson should be in the Reds starting rotation, though, on Opening Day. Also, what does Bally Sports' parent company Diamond Sports' bankruptcy mean for Reds fans? Will they be able to see their team on TV? Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

The Cincinnati Reds best position group is catcher. Nick Krall did a good job of strengthening the position by bolstering the spots behind Tyler Stephenson with Curt Casali and Luke Maile. This position group will be a big reason why the Reds are better next year. But will David Bell be a reason they are better? We try to quantify whether Bell is above replacement level or below replacement level as a manager. Also, there is a statistic that defined the struggles of the Reds lineup last year. We look at what it is and why the Reds must be better at it in 2023. *SUBSCRIBE* on YouTube and *FOLLOW* the podcast on your favorite app and on Twitter and Instagram @lockedonreds Also follow @jefffcarr and @soffenbaker on Twitter JOIN THE DISCORD SERVER: https://discord.gg/STMcRDyMCt Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
In the end, the San Francisco Giants were sellers, but they didn't sell their top assets. The Giants traded Darin Ruf to the Mets in a deal that brought back J.D. Davis and three minor leaguers. They traded Curt Casali and Matt Boyd to the Seattle Mariners. And the Giants traded Trevor Rosenthal, just signed less than two weeks ago, to the Milwaukee Brewers. The SF Giants held onto Carlos Rodón and Joc Pederson. The Ruf trade was the most significant move the Giants made. The team was so enamored with Ruf that they gave him a two-year extension prior to the season, with a club option for a third year. But his performance fell off in 2022, especially when thrust into more of an everyday role, and he became expendable. J.D. Davis is a similar player in a lot of ways, another DH type, but he doesn't have big platoon splits and is above-average at the plate against lefties or righties. He can play third, left, and first, none particularly well. Rodón not being dealt probably just means that the offers weren't good enough. He was pretty clearly available, but the Giants needed to be compelled to give up on their season and give up the potential draft pick compensation they'd receive if he rejects the qualifying offer and signs elsewhere. Other top rental options such as Willson Contreras and J.D. Martinez were also surprisingly held onto. Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres acquired Juan Soto. It's a brutal outcome from the perspective of Giants fans, who've seen a serious influx of star power into the NL West in recent years—none of it with the Giants and all of it with the Dodgers and now Padres. San Diego gave up a haul to get Soto (they also acquired Josh Bell in the same deal and Brandon Drury in a separate one), but the NL West just got that much better. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Wilmer Flores. Evan Longoria. Curt Casali. The San Francsico Giants rode clutch home runs from those three veterans to a resilient 5-4 win in Philadelphia. The offense was sputtering again until Flores' two-run shot tied it. We were still tied in the 9th when Longoria's solo blast gave the SF Giants the lead. And Casali's blast felt the biggest of them all, a two-run bomb that gave the Giants a two-run lead in the 10th. Logan Webb actually allowed three homers himself, but the damage was limited as they were all solo shots. Despite the three home runs allowed, Webb was brilliant in this game. He struck out 10 and walked none. Giants manager Gabe Kapler actually shook Webb's hand and told him he was coming out of the game after the 8th, but Webb talked his way into going back out there. It didn't work out, as Webb immediately allowed a game-tying homer to Kyle Schwarber, but Webb and the team at large appreciated Kapler's willingness to place trust in his young ace pitcher. Dom Leone and Camilo Doval were sharp the rest of the way. Donovan Walton had a particularly rough at-bat in the 10th. He took what should've been ball four, but continued to stand around the plate until the catcher asked if he might've swung. The home plate umpire checked, and the third base umpire said he did. None of that would've happened if Walton had just taken off for first base. He clearly didn't know the count, and it could've easily cost the Giants in a big way. Walton then chased way out of the zone of the next pitch for strike three, failing to advance the free runner placed at second base to begin each extra inning. Thankfully, the next man up Casali lifted a mammoth home run to left that saved the day. Fans have been asking why Walton has been playing over Thairo Estrada, and an explanation is provided on the show. Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
It's been an ugly stretch for the San Francisco Giants both on and off the field. They've lost four straight, falling to five games back in the NL West. They've been decimated by injures all season, and in particular in the last few days. Through it all, however, they have a multi-game lead on the NL's final playoff spot as we are about to cross the 1/4 mark of the season. LaMonte Wade Jr., Brandon Belt, Curt Casali, and Austin Slater have all gone on the injured list since Friday. Also since Friday, the SF Giants got spanked around in a three-game sweep by the Padres in San Francisco. And things don't get any easier with the New York Mets coming into town tonight. Even though things have been ugly lately, the Giants are still 22-18 and have a 2.5-game lead over the NL's final playoff spot. Making the playoffs via winning the division was always the less likely route, so it's not terribly unexpected that they're not in first place. Their starters have allowed the majors' highest average on balls in play (BABIP). The team's ERA is much, much higher than its FIP. This suggests that they've deserved better results, and it also suggests that better results should lie ahead. We will find out, but it is an encouraging sign that they've managed to play overall above-.500 baseball despite a lot of things going wrong so far in 2022. Tommy La Stella powered the San Francisco Giants to a series win on Tuesday night, but the Rockies avoided the sweep on Wednesday. La Stella showed fans what he's capable of in the breakout performance, with a home run, two doubles, and a walk. People tend to sleep on his power, but he showed it off with a tape-measure home run as the very first hitter of the game.Several other Giants pitched in on offense, as they scored 10 runs and beat the Rockies 10-7. Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Crawford, and Darin Ruf also had big games. In Wednesday's loss, Logan Webb pitched great but the offense could not add on. Joey Bart came up in a couple of big spots with men on base and could not produce. His struggles, particularly with strikeouts, have looked worse in contrast to Curt Casali's recent strong performance. At some point, the SF Giants may have to consider making a move now that Michael Papierski is in the fold.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Well, they did it. The San Francisco Giants made another unpopular option decision, sending hot-hitting outfielder Luis González back to the minor leagues. González didn't deserve to be demoted, but the Giants had virtually no other choice. The only other conceivable option would've been carrying only 12 pitchers, which was clearly something they did not want to do—particularly in Denver.Same thing happened with LaMonte Wade Jr. last year, and he was back up in four days after Brandon Belt got hurt. González very much put himself on the map with his month of strong play in the majors, and rest assured that he will be back. This is his last option year, and the SF Giants can retain his rights for six seasons. If he continues to play well, he could be part of the mix for a long time. Starting next season, he will no longer be able to be optioned.Getting to the actual game, it was the Curt Casali and Mike Yastrzemski show on offense. Those two combined for three home runs, and the Giants needed every last one. Casali slugged two, and SF Giants catchers are now second in the majors in wRC+. Yastrzemski has been strong all season, and his home run last night was an impressive blast to right that traveled 420 feet. The San Francisco Giants' offense is second in the majors in runs scored per game.John Brebbia and Camilo Doval closed it out in the final two frames with scoreless outings. Prior to the game, Mauricio Llovera was added to the roster, Yunior Marte was optioned, and Anthony DeSclafani was placed on the 60-day injured list. DeSclafani isn't eligible to return until June 21.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Well, they did it. The San Francisco Giants made another unpopular option decision, sending hot-hitting outfielder Luis González back to the minor leagues. González didn't deserve to be demoted, but the Giants had virtually no other choice. The only other conceivable option would've been carrying only 12 pitchers, which was clearly something they did not want to do—particularly in Denver. Same thing happened with LaMonte Wade Jr. last year, and he was back up in four days after Brandon Belt got hurt. Today, the San Francisco Giants traded Mauricio Dubón to the Houston Astros. In exchange, the Giants received minor league catcher Michael Papierski. The move is fascinating on a number of levels, but the simple version is that it makes sense and shouldn't have caught anyone by too much surprise.Dubón was out of minor league options. He was a fringe player on the SF Giants' roster. The Giants could give Dubón some rope early on, because rosters were expanded for the season's first month and they had so many injuries. But rosters have come back down to 26, and everyone is getting healthy. There simply wasn't room to keep Dubón, and he could not be sent down. Some have said that they prefer Dubón to Tommy La Stella, but that's an apples to oranges comparison. They did not fill the same role on the roster—at all. La Stella is here to hit right-handed pitching; Dubón was on the roster to hit lefties. He was always able to do so, including this year. Many have pointed out that he was just getting on a role, but it's important to consider that his hot streak corresponded to the team facing a string of lefty starters. He's been well-below-average in his career (and this season) against same-handed pitching. The acquisition of Papierski is fascinating. He will report to Triple-A, where he's spent the last two seasons in the Astros' organization. He has great defensive qualities and an extremely discerning eye. In essence, he's exactly the type of player this Giants regime loves. He's also known to have a great personality and clubhouse presence. What this means for the Giants' current catchers on the major league roster, Joey Bart and Curt Casali, is unclear at this point. It could signal some real concern with Bart's swing and miss and strikeout issues, and it could also signal their willingness to deal the 2018 first-round pick. Only time will tell, but this was a very interesting trade.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Is Logan Webb's so-so start cause for concern? Should San Francisco Giants fans expect slugging third base prospect David Villar to get called up soon? Are Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani on the Giants' radar as their free agencies near?On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:What seems to be the source of Logan Webb's recent struggles? His Whiff% has dropped about 30% which has reduced his K% and xBA. Do batters have him figured out? Are there mechanical issues? Is it time to worry a little about Webb? Hasn't really looked like the same player we saw in the second half of last season. Is David Villar an MLB caliber dude? What is the likelihood the Giants go after a player like Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani? I believe this team is missing a superstar and a player like that would probably help sell out the park. Will Brandon Belt be a Giant in 2023?Who would you rather have starting, Joey Bart or Curt Casali?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The Rockies are who they thought they were. And the San Francisco Giants are much like they were last year. They're a deep and talented team. They have good starting pitching and will beat you with patience and power.Alex Cobb pitched very well today, following up Alex Wood's strong performance the night before. The SF Giants have a five-game winning streak heading into an off day and a road trip. They dominated the Rockies in this series, with contributions up and down the lineup.Yesterday, it was the bottom of the lineup that got things going. Between Luis González, Austin Slater, and Curt Casali, the eight and nine spots in the Giants' lineup didn't make an out. Today, Joey Bart contributed with a big single on an 0-2 pitch. LaMonte Wade Jr. had three hits. Brandon Crawford homered. The bullpen continued to be rock solid. The Giants are indeed playing good baseball, and they improved to 19-12 with a +40 run differential. They're in a good spot as they head out on the road to once against face the Cardinals and the Rockies.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Joey Bart has struck out in exactly half of his plate appearances. What will the San Francisco Giants do at the catcher position if he continues to struggle? Curt Casali hasn't exactly lit the world on fire either, so will the Giants feel compelled to make a move at some point if they aren't getting any production out of that spot in the lineup? It was always going to be a drop-off going from Buster Posey to Bart, but Bart's swing and miss issues have been a problem. Thankfully, he has made up for it somewhat with significantly improved plate discipline and some mixed-in power. But if the K's continue to pile up, his overall offensive line will keep dropping. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:It is obvious that Joey Bart is struggling at the plate with so many strikeouts. I know it is a small sample size, but do you anticipate the Giants making a move if his K's continue to pile up over the next month? What do you think a Willson Contreras or Sean Murphy deal would cost us?Bart's OPS is .646 and Curt Casali's is .416, but Bart has much more upside. Why do you think they're splitting time so much when other players who struggle like Darin Ruf stay in the lineup and continue to hit 3rd?Do we think Farhan Zaidi will at any point go and get a big free agent bat or trade/extend? Missed out on Bryce Harper and Shohei Ohtani, obviously he won't over pay for older declining players but at some point, why not to get an anchor 3 hole hitter that doesn't need to be platooned?Do you think the Rangers vs Giants off-season is a good case study of spending big vs spending smart? With Ketel Marte and Jose Ramirez extended who is the biggest impact player that the giants could reasonably trade for by the deadline or this offseason? What will happen with Thairo Estrada when Tommy La Stella is back? Estrada has been great.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
