In this episode of the CutroneZone, we dive deep into Chris Cutrone's essay "On Philosophy and Marxism: Response to Suther and Velissaris"—a characteristically sharp and mournful defense of the dialectic against the return to philosophy. As always, Cutrone's critique is uncompromising, clear, provocative, and melancholic.Support Sublation Media on Patreonhttps://patreon.com/dietsoap

Capitalism is a revolutionary situation of the last stage of pre-history, and the potential and possibility for freedom, or else it is just what Hegel said history has always been: the slaughter-bench of everything good and virtuous humanity has ever achieved. Marxism defined itself as the critical self-consciousness of this task of socialism in capitalism, but this has been eclipsed by the mere moral condemnation of catastrophe. This happened as a result of Marxism's own failure, over a hundred years ago, to make good on the crisis. This pattern has repeated itself since then, in ever more obscure ways. Chris Cutrone's Marxism and Politics: Essays on Critical Theory 2006-2024 (Sublation Media, 2024) span the time of the Millennial Left's abortive search to rediscover a true politics for socialism in the history of Marxism: the attempted recovery of a lost revolutionary tradition. Cutrone's participation as a teacher alongside this journey into the heart of Marxism was guided by the Millennial investigation into controversial and divisive figures such as Vladimir Lenin, Rosa Luxembourg, Leon Trotsky, Georg Lukacs, Theodor Adorno and the Frankfurt School, and Marx himself. The question of a political party for socialism loomed large--but was abandoned. Readers of these essays will find no taboo unchallenged, as every aspect of Marxism's accumulated wreckage is underwritten by the red thread and haunting memory of what was once the world-historical character of socialist revolution. This was going to be a conversation mainly about Cutrone's new book and course, but after a certain point pretty early in, the focus became Palestine-Israel, Hamas, what a "real Marxist" position would mean, why anti-imperialism ain't it. Gabriel Rockhill kept coming up because he's big on that anti-imperialism is the Real Left Solution To The Riddle Of History or whatever, but TU does not necessarily endorse that view, knowing very little about Rockhill's actual positions. This was not about Rockhill so much as Cutrone's take on him and that tendency of the Left, which is interesting on its own. Share your own thoughts below! Chris Cutrone of the Platypus Affiliated Society returns in order to both defend and transcend what Moishe Postone called "Traditional Marxism." The conversation is, as always, freewheeling and covers a variety of topics. Watch Doug try to keep up as Cutrone gallops ahead.
Spencer and Laurie interviewed the Platypus Society's Chris Cutrone, "the last Marxist" and our favorite contemporary Marxist, on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. The first half covers Cutrone's life. He explains how he went from a working class, Catholic Reagan-style conservative family to a Marxist, and his journey through education. One element in his journey of particular interest to us is his exposure to Catholic Worker-style Christians at an early age, and what impression that left on him. We get into his thoughts on what constitutes a good education, and whether or not education ought to differ depending on who is receiving it. The second half of the interview delves further into why leftists have a hard time dealing with the working class, whether it's because of their (now) Trumpian conservatism or their religiosity, the future of capitalism, how the environment might fare in a turn toward socialism, and why and how socialists and religious believers might be able to cooperate.

Chris Cutrone stops by to discuss his essay for Compact magazine entitled "Bourgeois Heroes." Cutrone approaches the Netflix original series Ozark from the perspective of a paranoid critic, or a critic who, in Adorno's words: "overestimates its object and exaggerates its meaning, using the microcosm of the cultural phenomenon to illuminate the surrounding social world."Bourgeois Heroes by Chris Cutronehttps://compactmag.com/article/bourgeois-heroesSupport Us on Patreonhttps://patreon.com/dietsoap

Two Marxists walk into a bar... one thinks the left is dead and needs to be brought back, the other thinks it is inseparable from the Democrats and must therefore be killed. Happy birthday, Karl Marx! This is a livestream response from Cutrone to Cryptofash in lieu of a debate. It took play May 5th, 2022.Pleeb will play interviewer and occasional devil's advocate so that we can hopefully learn something.
