Ep. 96 | Life after Childhood Trauma - Resolving the Past to Move Forward in Personal Relationships

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2021 62:58

Hey friend, today's topic is pretty heavy. We are talking about some childhood trauma in the form of abuse, and I want to prepare you for that in case you have kids in the room and want to wait to listen to this when no little ears are present. This is a tough subject, but I also feel like it's important to talk about. Joric McLean went through the unimaginable not only with his mom, but also with his stepmom from a very young age. His story is powerful. It will make you angry. It will make you cry, and it will make you feel all the emotions in between. We don't go into detail about the trauma, but if you want to hear more about his specific struggle/victory story, I encourage you to pick up a copy of the Lemonade Stand 2 anthology. He told me no question is off-limits today, so we're going to dive deep into his struggles, the mental shifts he made, how he made the best of the cards he was dealt, and the biggest lessons he learned from his childhood experience. We also talk about how to help our men open up about any trauma they may have encountered so our relationships can thrive and they don't have to feel like they have to bottle up the pain and can move forward from their past into a thriving future. One of Joric's missions is to encourage others to get help sooner rather than later so those old wounds of the past doing creep into adult relationships with spouses, partners, or kids. It's important to resolve the past or at least come to grips with it so you don't have to keep reliving it through current or future relationships. Ep. 91 | What Does Walking in Love and Justice Mean from a Biblical Standpoint?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2021 44:05

Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”  What do we need to remember? The Bible is our standard, and it has outlasted time. We don't get to pick and choose what we want to be true. We don't get to change who God says we are just because we don't feel like ourselves today. The Bible is our standard, and as Christians, we see things through that lens, that's what a Biblical worldview is, and that is why it's important for us to be in the Word, praying, journaling, studying, growing. If we are not solid in the Word of God, we could fall for anything.  So how do we take a stand on God's Word in love, walking in love without changing our standards? How do you walk in love and justice from a Biblical perspective? What does this look like? What boundaries do we need to set up for ourselves? How do we not get walked all over yet continue to show love to others? How do we show love to the unloving? These are questions of our day, and today is an encouraging conversation because I'm bringing on marriage and family therapist Jessica Hayes to help us navigate how to walk in love and justice without giving up our moral or Biblical standards. Part 1: What is Critical Race Theory? Cultural Views of CRT

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2021 50:02

Today is a hot topic for many, and I know it's controversial in nature, but it needs to be talked about because it's affecting our kids and the generations to come. Why? Because it's seeping sneakily (and not-so-sneakily into our schools). Critical race theory. What is critical race theory? It is the ideology that is behind most of the diversity and inclusivity training in school and the workplace, and these trainings are actually counterproductive because they're leading to more bias and fear. It is a lens through which to see the world (a worldview) - it shapes how you view politics, theology, and education. Critical theory sees everything as the oppressed versus the oppressor. It is deconstructing those constructs until they get down to fitting into this worldview of the oppressed versus the oppressor.  Why does this matter? What's the big deal if our kids are being taught it in schools? Isn't inclusiveness and diversity training a good thing? That's exactly what I have Andrew Rappaport on with me to talk about today. The language in our culture is changing, and we need to be aware of what the truth is behind it all. Andrew is the preaching pastor of Grace & Truth Bible Church in Bucks County, PA, and founder and executive director of Striving for Eternity Ministries and the Christian Podcast Community. The stress of the situation was overwhelming, and she started running to have an outlet to get out all the emotions from the day. In 2013 she ran her first half marathon. In 2015 she ran my first marathon, and in 2017 she ran her first 50km ultra marathon. Fast forward to today, she has completed 13 half marathons, 10 marathons, 1 ultra, and 1 Boston Marathon Virtual Experience.  Her road to Boston started the day she crossed the finish line of her first marathon just over 5 years ago. She just missed the qualification cut off by 37 seconds. She knew she had it in her, and it lit a fire within that has brought her to where she is today -- an overcomer. The most impressive part is that she doesn’t let her MS keep her from doing what she loves, and she uses it as fuel to keep fighting! On last week’s Thursday Tidbits, I had my friend Michelle Landrum from Loves7Grace on to share with us three tips on how to identify idols in your life and what to do once you’ve identified them. I decided to do a more personal episode today to share different idols I’ve had throughout my life, but as I prepped for this episode, I’ve revealed how quickly or easily anything can become an idol in our life if we’re not intentional and proactive with our focus! I’m hoping through my story you’ll be able to see any idols you may have in your own life and be able to begin the journey of releasing them. Maybe you’re like me, and in every job or role you’ve held, you have felt something missing, or you’ve just longed to have something that’s your own. I’ve only ever known working odd jobs and multiple of them as my husband and I navigated our way through early adulthood and parenthood. My most stable and longest-lasting job was in the restaurant where I started as a host and worked my way up to restaurant management (which actually was a fancy way of saying, “I’ll pay you for 40 hours, but you’ll work for 60+, and we will own your schedule and your time”). Don’t get me wrong, I actually loved what I did. I think a part of me thrives in the chaos and fast-paced environment a restaurant brings, but something was missing. I wasn’t feeling fulfilled, and I felt God had another calling on my life. If that’s you today, listen in, because my guest today is going to bring the fire and share her story of leaving a very stable corporate career to build her own business and inspire others to do the same. You can find joy right where you’re at, in whatever season or job you are in, and you’re called to do that. If you are in a season of motherhood, embrace that gift! If you are in a season as a working mom, be intentional with the time you have and be an example in your workplace and home. Learn to live joyfully where you are, and work to get where you feel God is leading you next. Lisa Williams is an Alaska girl, born and raised, married with three kids, is a life-long learner, loves to travel, and sings in a praise band.FULL SHOW NOTEShttp://redhotmindset.com/successful-career-woman-turned-entrepreneur-interview-with-wealth-mentor-lisa-williams/LINKS MENTIONED IN EPISODELisa’s Website: https://lisawilliamsco.comConnect with Lisa on Facebook: LisawilliamscoConnect with Lisa on Linked In: Lisa Williams CONNECT WITH MEFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/4mindfulmamasInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/redhotmindsetYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/redhotmindset
