Problems of Linguistics, Part I: Structural Linguistics Summary In this episode, I explore the rise and fall of post-Bloomfieldian structuralism, a dominant school ‎of thought in American linguistics. This methodology emphasized discovering linguistic grammar ‎through a set of mechanical procedures, starting with phonemics and moving systematically ‎through morphemics, syntax, and discourse. The rigid empiricism of the approach, which ‎excluded meaning and speaker intuition, ensured a catalog of observables but left significant gaps ‎in explaining deeper linguistic phenomena.‎ By the 1950s, the methodology was seen as a landmark in scientific rigor. However, only a decade ‎later, its influence began to wane. I delve into the reasons for this rapid decline, pointing to the ‎changing intellectual climate and internal weaknesses. The rise of cognitive science and Noam ‎Chomsky's generative grammar challenged post-Bloomfieldian principles, introducing concepts ‎like mental structures, universal grammar, and the generative nature of language—ideas that ‎post-Bloomfieldian linguistics could not accommodate.‎ While its procedural rigor and systematic approach laid an essential foundation for modern ‎linguistics, the school's neglect of semantics and over-reliance on corpus data marked its ‎limitations. By the 1970s, post-Bloomfieldian structuralism had transitioned from cutting-edge ‎theory to a historical chapter in linguistics.‎ Keywords #FerdinandDeSaussure; ‎#PostBloomfieldianLinguistics; #LinguisticMethodology; #Structuralism; ‎‎#AmericanLinguistics; #Phonemics; #Morphemics; #Syntax; #DiscourseAnalysis; ‎‎#LanguageTheory; #GenerativeGrammar; #Chomsky; #Empiricism; ‎‎#HistoricalLinguistics; #LinguisticDecline; #IntellectualShift‎

Jouissance Vampires
The Politics of Lacanian Structuralism (feat. Samo Tomšič)

We welcome Lacanian philosopher Samo Tomšič for a presentation and discussion on Lacan's relationship to structuralism and politics. We center this discussion around Seminar XVI, "From an Other to the Other" where we witness a shift in Lacan's structuralism, indicated in the very seminar title: from an Other (symbolic order) to the other (enjoyment). It is not unimportant that Lacan's sole thorough engagement with Marx appears precisely in this context, an engagement that can, and probably should, be read together with the shift from the indefinite to the definite article in the Seminar's title: “an” Other (language) is abstract, unspecified, and therefore detached from historicity; “the” other is specific and historically contextualized (surplus-value). In this talk, Samo revisits this and other open issues regarding the transformation of Lacanian structuralism, initiated in this ground-breaking Seminar. Above all, he argues for a “partisan reading” of Lacan's references to Marx. Although these may have been circumstantial (May ‘68) and perhaps even opportunistic (pleasing the radical students), they nevertheless open the horizon of a consistently left Lacanianism. Functionalism, led by William James, sought to understand the functions of consciousness and behavior in helping individuals adapt to their environments. Functionalism expanded the scope of psychology by integrating practical applications and a focus on adaptation. Its legacy endures in the ongoing exploration of how mental processes and behaviors serve adaptive purposes. #UPSC #IASprep #civilserviceexam #IASexamination #IASaspirants #UPSCjourney #IASexam #civilservice #IASgoals #UPSC2024 #IAS2024 #civilservant #IAScoaching #aUPSCmotivation #IASmotivation #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAStips #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity #UPSCpreparation #IASpreparation #UPSCguide #IASguide #UPSCtips #IAStips #UPSCbooks #IASbooks #UPSCexamstrategy #IASexamstrategy #UPSCmentorship #IASmentorship #UPSCcommunity #IAScommunity

Today, we will delve into Structuralism, one of the foundational schools of psychology.Wilhelm Wundt, often regarded as the father of psychology, established the first psychology laboratory at the University of Leipzig in 1879, marking the start of psychology as an experimental science. Edward B. Titchener, Wundt's student, brought Structuralism to the U.S., significantly developing its methods and theories. Structuralism, pioneered by Wundt and Titchener, played a crucial role in the early development of psychology. Summary of Chapter 1: Introduction to Constitutional Law Chapter 1 provides a comprehensive introduction to the U.S. Constitution, laying the groundwork for understanding its pivotal role in American law and governance. It begins with an overview of the Constitution's structure, highlighting the Preamble, seven Articles, and 27 Amendments. The chapter emphasizes the importance of the historical context in which the Constitution was created, discussing its emergence from the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and the key debates and compromises of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It then explores how the Constitution has evolved through amendments and judicial interpretation to meet the needs of a changing society. Key amendments, such as those from the Reconstruction era and the 20th century, have profoundly influenced civil rights and the balance of powers within the federal system. Finally, the chapter delves into various schools of constitutional interpretation—Originalism, Textualism, Living Constitution, Structuralism, Doctrinal Approach, and Pragmatism—each providing a different lens through which judges, especially the Supreme Court, interpret the Constitution. These interpretations are critical in shaping the application of constitutional principles to contemporary legal issues, ensuring the Constitution remains a living, dynamic document guiding American society. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

The late René Girard, former Stanford professor of literature and mentor to Peter Thiel, is having something of a moment on the right these days—as Sam Kriss recently put it in a Harper's essay, Girard's name is being "dropped on podcasts and shoved into reading lists," and "Girardianism has become a secret doctrine of a strange new frontier in reactionary thought." Why might that be the case? To unpack this question, Matt and Sam welcomed back John Ganz, whose four-part series on Girard is one of the best primers available. What does Girard have to say about who we are as human beings, why we want what we want, the origins of both violence and social order (and what they have to do with each others), the uniqueness of Christianity, and the nature of secular modernity? What use is all this to the right? And to what uses do they put it? Also: please pre-order John's book, When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s — it's sure to be excellent.Sources:John Ganz's Unpopular Front series on Girard: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4René Girard, Deceit, Desire, and the Novel: Self and Other in Literary Structure (1976)                              Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World (1987)                              The Scapegoat (1989)                               I See Satan Fall Like Lightning (1999)Sam Kriss, "Overwhelming and Collective Murder: The Grand, Gruesome Theories of René Girard," Harper's, Nov 2023Scott Cowdell, René Girard and Secular Modernity: Christ, Culture, and Crisis (2013)...and don't forget to subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon for access to all of our bonus episodes!

Abby, Patrick, and Dan kick off their 2024 Lacan era by tackling his single most famous essay and concept: the mirror stage. Because Lacan is notoriously difficult, this is going to take multiple episodes, of which the first is devoted to stage-setting, demystifying, and unpacking exactly why Lacan is both so notoriously difficult, and also notorious in general. What shakes out of their ensuing conversation includes Lacan's biography (in brief); Lacan as a reader of Freud and the description of his project as a “return to Freud”; the experience of reading Lacan; frustration, anxiety, the pressure of time, and the logic of the “short session”; and more. Then they turn to the essay itself, getting granular about Lacan's relationship to phenomenology (and what that is), his opposition to Descartes' cogito (and what that entails), and more, building to the famous scene of the baby jubilant before the image of itself in the mirror. What a charming scene of self-recognition and unproblematic joy! Or is it? Stay tuned for the next installment.Texts cited:Jacques Lacan, Ecrits: The First Complete Edition in English. W.W. 'Theory' - a magical glow has emanated from this word since the sixties. Theory was more than just a succession of ideas: it was an article of faith, a claim to truth, a lifestyle. It spread among its adherents in cheap paperbacks and triggered heated debates in seminar rooms and cafés. The Frankfurt School, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, Adorno, Derrida, Foucault: these and others were the exotic schools and thinkers whose ideas were being devoured by young minds. But where did the fascination for dangerous thoughts come from? In The Summer of Theory: History of a Rebellion, 1960-1990 (Polity Press, 2021), Philipp Felsch follows the hopes and dreams of a generation that entered the jungle of difficult texts. His setting is West Germany in the decades from the 1960s to the 1990s: in a world frozen in the Cold War, movement only came from big ideas. It was the time of apocalyptic master thinkers, upsetting reading experiences and glamorous incomprehensibility. As the German publisher Suhrkamp published Adorno's Minima Moralia and other High Theory works of the Frankfurt School, a small publisher in West Berlin, Merve Verlag, provided readers with a steady stream of the subversive new theory coming out of France. By following the adventures of the publishers who provided the books and the reading communities that consumed and debated them, Philipp Felsch tells the remarkable story of an intellectual revolt when the German Left fell in love with Theory. Kirk Meighoo is Public Relations Officer for the United National Congress, the Official Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago. His career has spanned media, academia, and politics for three decades. Hello Beautiful People! On today's podcast we have Adrian Holmes. Adrian is a family therapist, clinical supervisor and trainer. Adrian has worked in the human services field for 15 years and is currently completing PhD research related to mental health and social policy. Adrian co-founded and manages the training and supervision organisation Tools For Hard Conversations and released his first book entitled ‘Tools For Hard Conversations in the Helping Professions'. What I personally love about this conversation is Adrian's focus on the problem being the problem, not the person. In this day and age it is quite common for experts and professionals to meet people seeking support through the eyes of them being somewhat broken and needing to be fixed, rather with Adrian's take on this is that in labelling someone with say anxiety or depression, particularly children, can have real long-term damaging effects. Adrian prefers to see the person as whole, to explore our experience rather than labelling them and to lead with a foundation that we are our own experts when it comes to self-healing and self-development. We also discuss the importance of having hard conversations and the beginning processes of what that may look like. CONNECT WITH JENNAH-LOUISEWork With Me | https://www.jennahlouise.com.auInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/jennah_louiseCONNECT WITH ADRIANWebsite | https://www.toolsforhardconversations.com TIMESTAMPS00:00 Quote00:37 Introduction01:52 The most effective catalyst to change is through conversation03:28 The importance of seeing a person as whole06:48 Structuralism versus post-structuralism 09:48 People are their own experts12:34 Worker Positioning Quadrant16:02 The problem is the problem, not the person21:18 Explore your experience rather than label yourself23:42 Owning your change process 26:58 Meaning making & the concept of multiple realities 30:05 The misidentification with what defines us32:34 How to have hard conversations37:19 Be in this together 39:32 Be willing to have the hard conversation41:11 What does it mean to you To Be Human?#jennahlouise #tobehumanpodcast

He argues that there remains “an irresistible consilience of evidence for rejecting Darwinian cumulative selection as the major driving force of evolution.” From the origin of life to the origin of human language, the great divisions in the natural order are still as profound as ever, and they are still unsupported by the series of adaptive transitional forms predicted by Darwin. In addition, Denton makes a provocative new argument about the pervasiveness of nonadaptive order throughout biology, order that cannot be explained by the Darwinian mechanism.

This recording from January 5th, 2022. Signum master's student Elise Trudel Cedeño will present her thesis “Series Theory: Examining the Structure of the Modern Fantasy Epic” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Elise's supervisor, Professor Kris Swank. Abstract: Series Theory is a new, critical approach to examining Modern Fantasy in a serial context. There are two disparate methods when analyzing fantasy series texts- either by way of their fantastic content or by discussing how the overall structure of the series contributes to their meaning. There is little scholarship that examines how the structure of a series adds to or fully composes the fantasy narrative. Series Theory, however, melds Structuralism and Seriality Studies concepts together by examining how the repeated patterns within a series set (trilogies, septologies, etc.) creates an exciting escape while remaining safe and consoled by the familiar, repetitive structures. This thesis aims to show how the overall structure of the Modern Fantasy epic, closed-ended series creates meaning to the fantastic through three key stages: the Repetition of familiar narrative structures, the progression and Elaboration of each repeated element, and finally closing with a Eucatastrophic event and the room for a new beginning. About the Presenter: Elise Trudel Cedeño makes magic by teaching Literacy and Literature through various homeschool platforms, including Signum Academy Clubs. She earned her B.A. at Wagner College and her Master of Arts in Teaching English at Teachers College, Columbia University. In her free time, when she has any, she fosters kittens with her local humane society, and she tries new recipes for delicious homemade pies. She lives in rural Massachusetts with her loving husband, and by the time this thesis airs, her first child will be making an arrival at any time. About Signum Thesis Theaters: Each of our master's students writes a thesis at the end of their degree program, exploring a topic of their choice. We will be looking at the meaning of Structuralism and what the main criticisms of it were from Jean Piaget and from the Poststructuralism angle of Jacques Derrida. The simple answer to what is Structuralism would look at the structural linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure. His work especially the idea of langue and parole as we explore in this video was a pivotal inspiration for the structural anthropology of Claude Levi Strauss and for structural sociology as seen in the work of Barthes and Foucault and in structuralism psychology as seen in the works of Jacques Lacan. There are influential ways of looking at structuralism in literature as we shall see with the works of Joseph Campbell who while not a structuralist was influenced by Claude Lévi Strauss and whose work is the epitome of Structuralism.____________________⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: https://patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy_________________⌛ Timestamps:0:00 Intro: What is Structuralism 0:34 Ferdinand de Saussure and Structural Linguistics2:08 The Structuralists4:34 Piaget and the Failures of Structuralism as Science7:22 The Poststructuralism Critique by Derrida9:06 Summary and Conclusion

"Alfa Mist" is a British Jazz pianist, producer and rapper based in London.Growing up in the London borough of Newham to a single immigrant mother, Alfa's love of music originally led him to start producing beats in the vein of J Dilla. His curiosity in how hip-hop found it's roots led him to discover the original Jazz records that these producers were sampling from. His discovery of old jazz evolved into Alfa wanting to self-teach himself piano at the age of 17, so that he could bring the chords and harmonies to life in his own compositions. Alfa has gone on to release multiple albums and EP's, often featuring conversations with his brothers and sisters on themes of mental health and self-image. As usual, there is much more to know. Jay and Jesse dive into Alfa's history, his career, and spin a few of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Nicolas Villareal and C. Derick Varn debate Althusser all the time on Twitter and messages.   While Varn has had Nico on before to talk about Econophysics and Structural Marxism,  Varn and Nico often talk about this antagonistically.  This is the first of what is literally to be an irregular series as both their time allows where they discuss and debate the limits of anti-humanist/humanist debates.  Because dialogue is better than stupid debates on Twitter and having them devolve into Marxology and left beefs, we will do this here.  This is brought to you by patrons of VarnVlog. In this episode: Aristotle's Rhetorical Triangle, how I escaped a cult, why we must care about others, and how it can all be applied to persuasion, art creation, ideology, and modern life. We delve into some of the philosophical reasons behind what makes one “good” at rhetoric. I talk about how some of Lacan's, Freud's, and Jung's psychological writings can be used to cultivate authority, humanity, and logic. As I explain each pillar of the triangle, I'll then use that same method to analyze my own life to give a better idea of who I am: my ethos of what led me to co-found Jam Street Media, the pathos of my grandmother's imperative to me, and the logos of the book that caused my exodus from religion. My Photography - www.instagram.com/faseycrancoMy Twitter - www.Twitter.com/faseycrancoMy Website - CaseyFranco.comJam Street Media - JamStreetMedia.comSuggest a topic: godsmastersandclout@gmail.comChapters -00:56 - Episode Introduction4:20 - The Rhetorical Triangle14:40 - Ethos (The Concept)30:55 - My Ethos (What I'm Credible to Speak On)39:24 - Pathos (The Concept)55:16 - My Pathos (How My Grandmother Sees Me)1:00:10 - Logos (The Concept)1:12:45 - My Logos (Using Logic to Escape a Cult)1:29:53 - The Wrap-upLinks and Citations -School of Liberal Arts Rhetorical Triangle Analysis - https://www.lsu.edu/hss/english/files/university_writing_files/item35402.pdfSalvoj Zizek on Gratification of Capitalist Consumption - https://youtu.be/P18UK5IMRDIManipulation vs Persuasion by Michael Roberts - https://medium.com/@michaelwroberts/the-difference-between-persuasion-and-manipulation-27eb4c02fd2dMeerkat Facts - https://www.natgeokids.com/au/discover/animals/general-animals/meerkat-facts/Social Contract Theory - https://iep.utm.edu/soc-cont/Michael Heumer, The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to ObeyLiberalism - https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/art_sci_etds/244/Stanley Milgram's Experiment on Obedience and Authority - https://www.sparknotes.com/psychology/psych101/socialpsychology/section7/How to understand power - Eric Liu - https://youtu.be/c_Eutci7ackLacan's “Big Other” - http://www.english.hawaii.edu/criticalink/lacan/terms/other.htmlFreud's “Superego” - https://www.simplypsychology.org/psyche.htmlSam Harris on Freewill and Genetic determinism - https://samharris.org/the-illusion-of-free-will/Lacan on Desire - https://www.lacanonline.com/2010/05/what-does-lacan-say-about-desire/Zizek on the lack of a “Big Other” - "What is the big other?" - The Pervert's Guide To Ideology 2012 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwIDNW89AqQTurlock's churches - https://townsquarepublications.com/turlock-worship/Videos I made for iHeart -Lacan on “The Subject” - http://www.english.hawaii.edu/criticalink/lacan/terms/subject.htmlEmpathy - https://lesley.edu/article/the-psychology-of-emotional-and-cognitive-empathy#:~:text=According%20to%20Hodges%20and%20Myers,but%20without%20the%20self%20actuallyEffects of the Agricultural Revolution - https://courses.lumenlearning.com/suny-hccc-worldhistory2/chapter/effects-of-the-agricultural-revolution/#:~:text=The%20increase%20in%20agricultural%20production,loosely%20regulated%20agricultural%20market%2C%20andYuval Noah Harari on Human Superiority - https://ideas.ted.com/why-humans-run-the-world/Lacan's “Signifiers” - https://nosubject.com/SignifierReptile Brain vs Mammalian Brain - https://thebrain.mcgill.ca/flash/d/d_05/d_05_cr/d_05_cr_her/d_05_cr_her.htmlGenetic predisposition vs Experience - https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-nature-versus-nurture-2795392Structuralism - Calhoun, Craig, ed. 2002.
