On this special holiday episode, SPS brings to you reports from protests in the USA, Germany and Austria. We include shotgun interviews with participants and reflections by our members. In the first segment, our West Coast members interview the academic workers part of the strikes at the University of California. They ask the strikers at the LA and Santa Barbara campuses about their participation in the strike and their views on the relationship between this labor struggle and the long-term vision for the Left. On the second segment, our members Marius, Lisa and Andreas went to several university occupations organized by “End fossil: Occupy!” –– a climate justice movement with the goal to put an end to the fossil fuel economy. STAR WARS PREQUELS!  That is a bad word in not just nerd circles of weirdo fanboys but with many casual film fans. The first of 3 movies in the StarWars universe dropped in 1977, and the article we're gonna discuss was released on my birthday. Coincidence? Anyway, Chris Cutrone in Sublation Magazine argues that the StarWars prequels actually get a bad rap! From his piece in Sublation: The message of Lucas's Star Wars prequel films is much more difficult and challenging than the original Star Wars trilogy: It shows that the path of apparent “good and evil” in politics and society is a very convoluted one, involving many reversals and surprising twists of fate — one might even say that it is “dialectical.” It is “beyond good and evil” and not at all ever what it first appears to be. This is a lesson from the Boomer experience of the 20th century's dramatic wars and revolutions that the Millennial generation, as viewers in their youth, were not adequately prepared to receive let alone contemplate from Lucas's films — and remain deaf and blind to today. Cutrone objects to Conrad's statism and to what he sees as the Millennial left's ultimate slide into a combination of Stalinism and Social Democracy. 

In a recent article, entitled The Dictatorship of the Proletariat and the Death of the Left, Chris Cutrone wrote: “Today, the ostensible ‘Left' — the avowed ‘socialists' — have abandoned the goal of the dictatorship of the proletariat, either in words or in fact, the latter by reinterpreting the dictatorship of the proletariat to mean the governing of capitalism by sociologically working-class political parties in a welfare-state or so-called ‘social democracy'.” What is the dictatorship of the proletariat?
