This week we jump back to the 1990s to hear the story of The JudyBats with frontman Jeff Heiskell.  This band has an incredible catalog and they reached the charts so you will probably recall a track or two of theirs if you were in your teens or 20s at that time.  Or you might be a raving fan and can't wait to hear more about them.  And if you don't know their music at all, well...I'm kinda jealous, because you're about to find your next favorite band, just 3 decades later. The JudyBats were founded when Jeff Heiskell and Ed Winters were playing together and heard a neighbors house playing music as well and ran in to the group of Tim Stutz, Johnny Shugrue and Terry Casper at a local bar in Knoxville, TN and agreed to start playing together.  They added Peggy Hambright and the took off as The JudyBats, finding success locally pretty quickly, then getting signed to Sire Records.  The first track they released was for a tribute album the label was putting out, and it found immediate success too.I've really enjoyed the fact that we've been able to bring on bands and musicians from the 90s to share their stories and their music.  These are people who I was a massive fan of and never thought I'd get to speak with at all, let alone in some kind of legitimate capacity.  I enjoy bringing on the likes of The Samples, Wheatus, Tripping Daisy and this week's guest The JudyBats as their music is all so good it is still relevant today and worth your time.  It doesn't matter when good music was written and released, if it's awesome and you haven't discovered it yet, then that's all that matters.  Plus, with these bands, we get the complete picture of what it's like to find success, and then see it flicker and go out, which allows us to learn more about those aspects of the music industry and the story arc of the career.  It's certainly not all fun times and glamorous.  And each of these have pushed through and continuing to create and perform, either under a new name and evolution, or still carrying the flag and moniker of the original.  Jeff now releases music under the title Heiskell and it is very good.  We wrap things by learning more about that and share a song or two.So let's enjoy this insightful chat with Jeff Heiskell of The JudyBats as he's got great stories to tell!  And hope you enjoy the music whether you already knew them or if they're new to you.  Thanks for listening! And big thanks to Dan Drago of 25 O'Clock Pod for joining on this one, as he was a fan of The JudyBats while listening to them on WBER from Joey Guisto, who helped me Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". I recently met up with Philly podcast host and longtime musician Dan Drago at the Penrose Diner in south Philly and before we even walked in he kindly hooked me up with a bag of homemade goodies made with stuff from his own garden. I scored jars of homemade tomato sauce, salsa roja, pickled green tomatoes, and even figs. FIGS! I got all that, and all he got was a John Faye Power Trip CD from 1999.. somebody got the short end of the stick there! ;)If you don't know Dan, he is the host of 25 O' Clock - Philadelphia's longest running music podcast.. he thinks. I am a devout follower of this pod, not only because it's named after a great song by XTC's side project the Dukes of Stratosphere.. but because Dan is a genuinely smart, genial, and curious interviewer. With 330+ episodes and counting, 25 O' Clock is celebrating its tenth year of amplifying Philly musicians and the music scene in general. I am proud to have appeared as the guest on two of these episodes, which you can check out here:20182023In addition to celebrating a decade of his show, Dan is also giving back to the Philly music community with the release of a great compilation called “Want to play a song?.. Live on 25 O'Clock Vol. 1" The album features 10 live musical performances from his past guests and all proceeds go to the Philly Music Fest, which has given over 500K to local music and arts non-profits since its inception in 2017.You can pick up that release at 25oclockpod.bandcamp.comGet all the 25 O' Clock you can handle at the official website:https://www.25oclockpod.comHope you enjoy the show!!~ JKF ❤️

This week we're joined by Dan Drago, the host of 25 O'Clock.  In the second half of the convo, we hear how he started and made 25 O'Clock the longest running music podcast in Philadelphia (we think).  Also, very cool moments around music that "flipped a switch" for our ears and where we were introduced to them, which spans from WBER, listener supported radio station in Rochester NY, to Beavis and Butthead, and more!BioDan Drago has called Philadelphia home since 2004, moving there from Western New York to establish a homebase while playing in bands and touring. Playing actively and touring from 2004 to 2013, Dan threw himself into the Philly music community. In 2014, he got out of the van, set up a mic, and created 25 O'Clock: a podcast focusing on the Philadelphia music community. He started interviewing guests at his kitchen table and eventually put together his own studio in 2015. Dan has kept his finger on the pulse of Philadelphia music for almost eight years and 250 episodes, as of the time of this recording.Dan lives in South Philadelphia, plays bass in Philly band Lovecartel, as well as occasionally performing his own solo work. He volunteers at Rock To the Future, teaching songwriting and production to students who don't have easy access to music programs.Thank you to Carver Commodore, argonaut&wasp, and Blair Crimmins for allowing us to use their music in the show open and close. As a fan of long-format interview shows Dan Drago has created Philly's longest-running podcast in the vein of Charlie Rose, Terry Gross, and Marc Maron; “I love what comes out of taking the time to sit and talk with someone for longer than a few minutes. Everyone's got a great story, you need to sit still long enough for them to let it out.” A former touring musician, Dan now manages the 25 O'Clock. What makes this live record so special, anyways? Right out the gate, we start our two-part look at the 1997 album 'Living In Clip' by Ani Difranco. James and Dan highlight the songs, talk about how this record and Ani's music made a big impact on them growing up in Western NY, and how her live shows were unique, vibrant, and a lesson in how the personal is often the political.

In April 1988 Harvard University was awarded a patent that was the first of its kind. U.S. Patent Number 4,736,866 was small, white, and furry, with red beady eyes. His name was OncoMouse. The mouse, genetically engineered to have a predisposition for cancer, allowed researchers to study the disease in an intact living organism. It promised to transform cancer research, but not everyone was happy. Most critics were wary of patenting life forms at all. But academic scientists were also worried about the collision of commercial and academic science. It forced them to face difficult questions: Who should pay for science? Who does scientific knowledge belong to? And should science be for the good of the public or for profit? Credits Hosts: Alexis Pedrick and Elisabeth Berry Drago.
