This throwback podcast features an interview with Dan Macklin, the co-founder of SoFi. As many of you know who read the Freedom Formula for Physicians, I have a passion for reducing, eliminating, and destroying debt. Practically every single resident or fellow is paying somewhere between 6% and 7% in interest rate. On $200k worth of debt, we're talking about $13k a year in interest or nearly $1,000 a month. If you think about virtually any loan, like a mortgage or a car loan, if you have a high interest rate today and tomorrow interest rates drop, you could get it refinanced somewhere. Your 6% loan can become a 5% loan. That's why I thought I'd bring a special guest to the podcast, Dan Macklin. Dan is a co-founder and vice president at SoFi, a leader in marketplace lending with over $2 billion in loans issued. Dan heads the Business Development team, spending a lot of time with SoFi borrowers across the nation. This interview reveals the following: – How you can cut cost of interest of your student loans by 50% or more – When you are NOT able to refinance your loans and when you SHOULDN'T refinance them – How quick and easy it is for you to refinance your loans and what you can do to speed up the process – The two critical difference between fixed and variable loans and how you can change your loans if you change your mind later on. (Hint: It doesn't cost a single penny!) For the show notes, loads of free resources, and the full transcript, visit the podcast website at www.doctorfredompodcast.com
In this episode of Contrary Radio, we cover why Dan worked at a bank for 12 years out of undergrad, how business school at Stanford made SoFi possible, how to build a moat when the product you’re building is somewhat commoditized, and the brand value of creating delight and community. We hope you enjoy listening!

The TalentCulture #TChat Show is back live on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, from 1-2 pm ET (10-11 am PT). Last week we talked about why recruiting is a legitimate career choice, and this week we’re going to talk about how employers can help bridge the great debt divide. It’s nearly official — the fact that Millennials make up the majority of the workforce. But with all the possibilities ahead for empowering a better workforce, the future is bleak because of the burden of student loan debt and rising healthcare costs. They've reached crisis proportions and they're having a profound impact on the nation's workers and employers. It’s a critical issue today with not only younger generations being able to save for the future, but many Gen Xers and Baby Boomers also feel these financial pains and bear the brunt of lingering student debt. Employers need to offer employees assistance with these issues is greater than ever, especially if they hope to recruit and retain key talent, reduce costly turnover and make up the ground they’re losing due to the impact of their student debt and the healthcare reform on their medical benefits. Join TalentCulture #TChat Show co-founders and co-hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman as they talk about how employers can help bridge the great debt divide with this week’s guest: Dan Macklin, co-founder and vice president of SoFi, the nation's second largest marketplace lender. Thank you to all our TalentCulture sponsors, partners and supporters!
