Witsand, known for its fynbos, whale watching, and flatwater kiting spots, has become one of the first towns to adopt Bitcoin for everyday transactions. In this town, residents and visitors can buy petrol, groceries, surf lessons, and more using Bitcoin. This trend is growing along the Garden Route, particularly in Plettenberg Bay. In an interview with Biznews, Witsand resident Eldry Hill explained that this shift is a response to the significant depreciation of the rand against the dollar, providing a hedge against South Africa's monetary policy. Hill noted that Bitcoin is particularly suited for individuals in South Africa who are considered unbankable, as it does not require a traditional bank account and allows people to earn Bitcoin through work. Early adopters in Africa, she said, can benefit from Bitcoin's scarcity and it is an attraction for tourists from the Bitcoin community.

Bucket List Episode: The Garden Route of South Africa, by Rose Kilian Hi there, I'm Rose Kilian, and I'm thrilled to share the magic of the Garden Route in South Africa, a place that has been my home and my heart. Growing up here was a dream, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and a rich tapestry of experiences. Whether you're planning a visit or just curious, I'm excited to take you on a journey through this enchanting region. The Garden Route stretches along the southern coast of South Africa, from Knysna in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. This coastal corridor is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, pristine beaches, and charming towns. It's a paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. We are starting our journey in Plettenberg Bay, or 'Plett' as the locals call it. Plett is known for its golden beaches, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. Visit Robberg Nature Reserve for breathtaking hiking trails and see seals and dolphins. The beaches here, like Lookout Beach and Keurbooms Beach, are best for unwinding and soaking in the sun. Next, we head to Knysna, one of my absolute favorite spots. Nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Knysna is famous for its lagoon and the iconic Knysna Heads. Take a cruise on the lagoon, visit the Knysna Elephant Park, or explore the lush Knysna Forest. The forest is magical, with ancient trees and the possibility of spotting the elusive Knysna Loerie bird. Don't overlook Sedgefield, a quieter town that's perfect for relaxing. The Saturday Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market is a local favorite, offering fresh produce, homemade goods, and crafts. The surrounding lakes and beaches are serene and ideal for a peaceful retreat. Wilderness is another gem along the Garden Route. This small town is surrounded by rivers, lakes, and forests, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing, and bird-watching. The Map of Africa viewpoint offers panoramic views of the landscape that resembles the continent of Africa, a sight you won't want to miss. Finally, George is the largest town on the Garden Route and an excellent base for exploring the region. It has a rich history, beautiful botanical gardens, and excellent golf courses. The Outeniqua Transport Museum is a fascinating stop for train enthusiasts. For something a bit different, head inland to Oudtshoorn, the world's ostrich capital. The Cango Caves, with their impressive limestone formations, are another highlight. These caves are among the largest in Africa and offer guided tours through their vast chambers. The Garden Route is not just a destination; it's an experience that stays with you. There's something for everyone, from its diverse landscapes to its vibrant communities. Whether hiking through ancient forests, lounging on pristine beaches, or savoring local cuisine, the Garden Route offers endless adventures and memories. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope you can visit and create your own unforgettable experiences in this beautiful part of the world. Safe travels, and enjoy every moment in the Garden Route of South Africa! In this episode of "Sleepless in Singapore," I take you on a journey to South Africa with my adventurous friend Hatim. Our escapade begins in Cape Town, where we accidentally dine and dash on our first night, only to return and pay, much to the relief of the waitstaff. The next day, we explore the stunning Cape Point, marvel at the powerful ocean, and visit an ostrich farm (sadly without Marty), where we feed the birds and take countless photos. Our adventure continues with a visit to the South African Penguins, an evening at a sushi bar, and a trip to the vibrant Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. The following days are a whirlwind of experiences: from an insightful slum tour to the breathtaking Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, where we admire unique African flora. We indulge in ice cream at Tapi Tapi, enjoy a dramatic drive through the mountains to a secluded Airbnb, and savor a traditional braai under a starlit sky. Our journey wraps up with a visit to Stellenbosch's wineries, a Segway tour, and a final night of local food and dance in Cape Town.

The Tsitsikikamma community, along the Garden Route, remains in limbo over the future of some Grade 10 learners in the area. Two weeks since the re-opening of the new school year, some learners are said to be stuck at home as their parents cannot afford to pay for scholar transport to schools situated at nearby towns, which stand 70 to 80km away. Allegations are that Tsitsikamma Primary School was to be converted to a high school in order to accommodate the community but plans in this regard did not materialise. For a look at the state of education in the Eastern Cape province, Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporters, Lwando Nomoyi and Abongile Jantlies, as well as spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education, Malibongwe Mtima.
Today's episode is with Johan Meyer (also known as Stompie) from Mother Rock and J.H. Meyer Signature Wines based in the Swartland, South Africa. If you're privy to the natural wine scene in the Cape, you'll know these labels without a doubt. I often hear people say that there are three guys that really put natural wine on the map in South Africa and that is Johan Meyer, Jurgen Gouws of Intellego (there's an episode with him a few back) and Craig Hawkins of Lammershoek and Testalonga. In this episode, you'll hear how Stompie got into natural wine, and how it wasn't always what he did. At the beginning, he was working for a big commercial winery called Sutter Home – you might have heard of it – out in California. After another stint at a smaller winery in New Zealand, plus a transformative experience at Matassa in Southern France – a natural wine project started by Tom Lubbe, a New Zealander who grew up in South Africa South – Stompie returned home determined to do his own thing. He shares how the Swartland Revolution which took place around 2010 helped pave the way for newcomers like himself, and how at that time, there was a huge gap in the market for affordable natural wine made at scale. Enter: Mother Rock Wines. That is all part 1 of my conversation with Stompie. In Part 2, we talk more about the wines, including his 'Brutal!' series, which is a natural wine “club” of sorts, to which Stompie was the first South African producer ever invited. You'll also hear about the new wine of origin appellation that he has established at his high elevation home on the Piketberg Mountain, about two and a half hours north of Cape Town. Plus, stick around for the end of part 2 where you'll hear why Stompie is called Stompie. To begin the story, we need to go all the way back to Stompie's childhood in the Garden Route, where the dominant type of farming was not of grapes, but of cows... Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. The storm surge that battered South Africa's coastal towns - leaving death and destruction in its wake - was the worst in 20 years. That is according to Gerhard Otto, the Head of the Disaster Management Centre of the Garden Route. He speaks to BizNews after a stormy weekend in which freak waves crossed roads in tsunami-like fashion to flood restaurants, homes and parking lots. He reveals the extent of the damage to infrastructure - and says that longer term repair work could take between six months and a year. He lists the factors that combine to form “perfect storms; explain why they could get even bigger in future - and appeals to the public to heed storm surge warnings. - Chris Steyn

If you are a regular listener you are going to realize that this episode is a little different! First of all it is not edited at all and there isn't even music or show notes for this episode. So why? I really wanted to create a little 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions episode and to release it just before the new year so that hopefully you will be inspired for your travel! I normally record my podcasts in advance especially when traveling, but I wanted to record this close to release because I knew that many of our reflections and favorites would be from my travel right at the end of the year and I wanted to make sure that they would be in the running but the tradeoff is that I cannot edit it as I normally would. At the time of recording this introduction, we have two of our 4 Africa trips. We said goodbye to our Botswana one folks and tomorrow we welcome our Garden Route travelers and after that, we'll have one more Botswana trip before heading home. IIn this episode, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and her husband David Goudreau are my guests and they will share their 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions.I do want take this time to thank you, the listeners who have been listening in to this podcast in 2022! I am so grateful to every single one of you who has listened to an episode, subscribed or shared the podcast with people they know. I am so grateful to you! Email from a listener I have received an email from Spanish Berte, who wanted to let me know that my episodes from Cape Town and The Garden Route inspired her and her boyfriend. She writes: Hi Palle, Don't ask how we found your podcast, but we did "just in time" as we (my boyfriend and me) are "finishing" a two-month Cape Town stay (working and exploring the city and surroundings) with three days on Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and back. Just letting you know that I LOVE your podcast as it was just a "copy-paste" of your trip of tons of moments that we lived in the last 2,5 months. I would be more than excited to hear from you. Have a good one, Cheers, Berte Thanks, Berte. I'm glad to hear from you and super-stoked that you were inspired. If you also want to drop me a line, please do. Go to theradiovagabond.com/contact and see how. Next Episode from Armenia We have one more interview episode from Armenia coming up in a few days. That one is with a remarkable traveller. And I don't think I'm offending any of my other guests by saying that I've saved the best for last. In fact, I'm sure they'd all agree. Tony Giles is very well-travelled – he'd been to 128 UN Nations when I met him in October, but that's not what makes him unique. He's 100% blind and 80% deaf on both ears. But that doesn't stop him from seeing the world, travelling solo. Hear why he does that and how it's possible. You will be blown away. My name is Palle Bo. See you.
Her dykker Paul og hans team mere i dybden.
We're joined by Fionnuala Jones again this week, and she's brought a whole island's worth of trashy Pokémon with her. (And, weirdly, we're not talking about the islands of Ireland, Cork, or Bainbridge.) Meanwhile, the boys have found their way to a new island themselves—Ula'ula Island—where they face an ass-backward “Kantonian-style” gym, dodge golf balls on the side of a mountain, and encounter the most punchable face this side of the Festival Plaza. And what do they have to show for it? Well, a lovely home in Dublin and a budding romance with Jude Law, hopefully.

Click here to see the full show notes! In today's episode, we'll be talking to Tess Challis. Tess has written 8 vegan cookbooks and is also a life and business coach with a particular focus on mindset, limiting beliefs, and mindfulness. She also has a beautiful blog with tons of wonderfully healthy recipes which makes her the perfect person to talk to on this topic: healthy habits when traveling.I don't know about you, but when I travel, any healthy habits that I have developed while being in a routine seem to go out of the window. At home, I might be eating smoothies for breakfast with berries and kale, and doing some form of intense exercise each day and as soon as I start to travel I will be eating french fries and barely getting any steps in each day even if there are better choices at my fingertips. In this episode, Tess shares 5 tips for making healthy choices when traveling. If you are someone who travels full-time or perhaps travels a lot for work, or someone who just wants to stay on track when you go away for the weekend, you won't want to miss this episode.Just a little bit of housekeeping. As I mentioned in the last episode with Wendy about languages for travel, this episode was recorded as part of a vegan travel summit I planned on doing last year. I have since decided to put the summit on indefinite hold but in the interest of getting some of the content into the world, I decided to release some of the recordings as podcast episodes. A big thank you to Tess and the other speakers for allowing me to do that. You'll hear us refer to the travel summit a couple of times. SponsorBut first, this podcast is sponsored by World Vegan Travel! We have an incredible trip planned to South Africa along the Garden Route, which is basically a beautifully scenic route east of Cape Town. You probably all know that South Africa is famous for all of the safari animals, but in case that was not enough, we will be seeing some other types of animals both in the wild and in sanctuaries. While we don't know the exact order of events, we do know that we plan to visit a penguin colony close to Cape Town. They heading east we will visit the coastal town of Hermanus where we will enjoy a talk from some marine biologists before heading out to see whales in the ocean. After that, we will head to the cute town of Greyton which has amongst other things, a beautiful farmed animal sanctuary. We do actually have some other surprises in-store, but you will have to come and join us to find out what they are! If you are interested in finding out more about this trip, you can always look at the link in the show notes. We also encourage you to jump on a call with us to ask us any questions you might have about this trip, payment, etc.
