In this thought-provoking episode of Veteran Made, host Carey Kight interviews author David Rose about his latest novel published by Dead Reckoning Collective, Screaming Eagles Wings, and delves into the deeper cultural implications of storytelling rooted in personal experience. Rose, a former Marine who served in Iraq, discusses how his book aims to counter the prevailing narrative about the Iraq War by highlighting the heroic aspects and the sense of brotherhood that many veterans fondly remember. The conversation takes a critical turn as Rose and Kight explore the concept of cultural decline in America. They argue that the current societal shift towards a “victim culture” has negatively impacted veterans, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of struggle and victimhood. Rose emphasizes the importance of recognizing the extraordinary achievements of their generation and rejecting the notion that veterans are inherently victims of their experiences. Both Kight and Rose advocate for a return to personal responsibility and reconnection with the broader civilian community. They stress the value of specific, experience-based storytelling as an antidote to the superficial, high-level perspectives that dominate modern discourse. By sharing authentic, deeply personal narratives, they believe veterans can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of their experiences and help combat the cultural decline they perceive. In this episode of Veteran Made, Carey Kight engages in a thought-provoking dialogue with Cokie about the intersections of art and the military experience. The conversation challenges the often subjective interpretations associated with postmodernism. Carey and Cokie argue that while self-expression is a significant component of art, there exists an objective standard of goodness, truth, and beauty that artists should strive to capture, pushing back against the notion that art's meaning is solely determined by the observer's interpretation. Instead, they suggest that artists bear the responsibility of crafting their work to convey clear, universal messages that resonate across different audiences. Together, they challenge listeners to reconsider the role of the artist in communicating meaning, urging creators to take ownership of their narratives rather than leaving interpretation entirely in the hands of their audience. This discussion not only questions prevailing artistic norms but also encourages veterans and civilians alike to engage with art as a means of shared understanding and connection. Tonight's guest is Mac Caltrider, the author of Double Knot, a war memoir in seven essays. Mac shares with us his life story, including culture associated with Baltimore, Maryland; two deployments to Afghanistan as a Marine; working as a patrol cop during tumultuous times; and his career in journalism. All of which is connected in Double Knot. Episode 39 highlights: 1). Plug Uglies — a now closed Irish pub in Baltimore, Maryland, named after old-timey firefighter gangs that used to start fires and get into street fights. 2). Family lineage in the US military. 3). Mac's passion for books from an early age, which would prove useful as a writer and journalist years later. 4). Awesome history associated with Mac's unit, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines (2/8), which includes a tale about the first ever Medal of Honor recipient's action captured on video (many confuse Air Force CCT John Chapman's action in Afghanistan as the first). 5). The humorous tales of the wiggling hedgehog and “the smoking crab” in Afghanistan (YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1bEDH4bwHI). 6). Double Knot (YouTube link: https://youtu.be/UP2dlTmig8Y) 7). Coffee or Die magazine and honored by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. 8). “We tell ourselves stories in order to live...We look for the sermon in the suicide, for the social or moral lesson in the murder of five. We interpret what we see, select the most workable of the multiple choices. We live entirely, especially if we are writers, by the imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images, by the "ideas" with which we have learned to freeze the shifting phantasmagoria which is our actual experience.” -Joan Didion Mac Caltrider has been a long time friend and supporter of Dead Reckoning Collective. He humbly submitted his own manuscript after years of writing about other people's books and eventually breaking into a career in journalism. In his debut book, Caltrider takes us on a tour of Afghanistan's IED-filled Helmand province, where every footstep is an act of bravery. Without a chance to exhale, he moves on to explore the messy world of policing in the wake of George Floyd and the outbreak of COVID-19. Caltrider then takes us up the snow-swept slopes of Mount Rainier and on a whirlwind tour of the United States, alongside Miss America, some of the Pentagon's top brass, and a gaggle of B-list celebrities that more closely resemble a circus than a morale boost. As the stories progress, a narrative through-line emerges, revealing the complicated ways in which war remains with those who wage it. In this episode of the podcast we discuss topics covered in Mac's book and how his thought process evolved before and after composing these essays. What we learn is it's not always so simple and we don't always get the full picture, but also that it doesn't have to make sense immediately for it to be worth it. The immediate experience and the delayed gratification is all part of the journey.

Havok Journal writer https://www.instagram.com/nevillejohnson01/ (Neville Johnson) has lived a life of high adventure. And he has the scars to prove it. Always an articulate, humble, insightful and soulful interview, we start at his childhood in South Africa as the son of a police officer and follow him into the British Army, deployments to Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan and then into the realm of private military contracting in Iraq. I've always been fascinated with the Border Wars and the second- and third-order effects of the end of apartheid and Nev provides a fascinating window into day-to-day life in South Africa before, during and after the vast political changes. But Nev also has an eye for the intimate details, the quiet moments, the key decision points that kept him in the profession of arms for so long. It was a real pleasure to speak with Nev about subjects that so few can speak knowledgeably about. https://havokjournal.com/culture/philosophy-poetry/https-havokjournal-com-culture-philosophy-poetry-37134/ (Life) by Neville Johnson in Havok Journal https://havokjournal.com/culture/philosophy-poetry/sunset/ (Sunset) by Neville Johnson in Havok Journal https://havokjournal.com/culture/philosophy-poetry/https-havokjournal-com-culture-philosophy-poetry-37144/ (Home Coming) by Neville Johnson in Havok Journal https://havokjournal.com/culture/philosophy-poetry/memories-of-war/ (Memories of War) by Neville Johnson in Havok Journal https://havokjournal.com/culture/philosophy-poetry/stranger-to-myself/ (Stranger to Myself) by Neville Johnson in Havok Journal https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085RQRKPY/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1 (Sweeping Leaves in the Wind), https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NTLRPPD (Good Soldiers Don't Cry), and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08RH34WDN/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i2 (Alone in a Crowded Room) by the Veterans Collective, featuring selections from Neville Johnson. https://www.amazon.com/War-After-Anthology-Poet-Warriors/dp/1733809929/ref=sr_1_2?crid=5CYGI3KMDCEP&keywords=War...%26+After+The+Anthology+of+Poet+Warriors&qid=1642450907&sprefix=war...%26+after+the+anthology+of+poet+warriors+%2Caps%2C40&sr=8-2 (War...& After The Anthology of Poet Warriors Collection 2) by Dead Reckoning Collective, featuring selections from Neville Johnson.

Savage Wonder, episode 20 with https://www.instagram.com/keithwalterdow/ (Keith Walter Dow). Probably no segment of western society over the past 10 years has seen a bigger spike in creative writing as the veteran community. So it makes sense that an entity like https://deadreckoningco.com/ (Dead Reckoning Collective) exists to capture and publicize so much of that writing. But that spike is also a byproduct of folks like DRC bringing so much literary education to the veteran community - through workshops, writing prompts, peer groups, etc. I had a great time sitting down with founder and editor Keith Walter Dow to learn about the evolution of DRC and how the rubber meets the road in the veteran writing community.

From his bodybuilding ambitions in South Africa to writing poetry in his native Afrikaans while deployed to Helmand Province, Neville Johnson has lived enough to fuel his writing for as long as he wants. Still so early in his writing career, he has attracted a lot of attention in veteran poet community for his moving descriptions and honest memories. Our first Five Eyes veteran on the podcast, Neville opened up about everything from his father on the South African police force to when he knew it was time to quit the military...and what it took for him to return to Iraq as a contractor. It's one hell of a life, made richer by the words of a talented - and still developing - writer. Show Notes Follow Neville Johnson here. Episode 3 of the Late Night History podcast, my co-host Alex West (@alexwest_coast) and I (@latenighthistory) welcome on our guest Luke Ryan (@lesgingerables). Luke is perhaps one of the coolest dudes that I work with. He is a former Army Ranger, an author, a poet, and a social media manager for Black Rifle Coffee. We discuss his childhood growing up in Pakistan and Thailand and how he achieved his first byline in a newspaper by the age of 12. We also cover the history of Army Rangers from the real old school days to how Ranger Battalion has evolved during the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) — with a number of rabbit holes in-between. Towards the end of the show, we geek out on war and literature, World War I poetry, and Luke shares the latest news on his upcoming book with publisher Dead Reckoning Collective.
Last week's conversation continues. Special Guest Tyler Carroll from Dead Reckoning Collective joins us once again for part 2 of this untraditional, yet unique collaboration for our podcast. Previously, we discussed our lives as firefighters and how writing, hunting and the outdoors directly relate to, impact, and influence us outside of being first responders and military. This week, we pick up where we left off, and talk more specifically about the fire life itself, and how we manage our schedules around our job, our side businesses, hunting and writing, and of course our families. Whether you're a hunter, a writer, a first responder, or a military service member, we invite you to join us for another awesome and unique conversation. If you haven't listened to part 1 of our collaboration (Episode 49), we encourage you to go back and do so as well.
In this episode Schep is joined by Dead Reckoning Collective co creator/writer/firefighter/army veteran. Tyler Carroll to discuss a myriad of topics, ranging from relationships between the veteran community and civilians to discussing poetry and the stigma surrounding it in “manly men,” communities. This episode focuses a lot on writing and the direction that Tyler and Schep think it's headed and where it is today. Wanna Skip around? The guys start the conversation off by talking about their influences, or in Tylers case the lack thereof, when he was growing up in Texas. It wasn't until he found people like Leo Jenkins that he started to get influences in his own writing. @ 14:00 Tyler starts to talk about how most people have this notion that manly men don't write poetry and he explains how that can't be further from the truth. Especially since he is a co writer in a collection of poetry called “Fact and Memory.” @ Tyler talks a little about Leo and Jenkins and David Rose, both writers affiliated with Dead Reckoning Collective. Tyler also talks about his favorite writer, Kurt Vonnegut, who appealed to Tyler because he was more into math and science as a kid. @ 30:00 Tyler and Schep talk about the Dead Reckoning podcast and how Dead Reckoning finds people, or rather how people find them that they feature or publish and how Keith Dow, co creator works with Tyler to get people involved. Around this point is also when they talk about the importance of a logo and the man behind their own awesome logo, Kevin Bakke. @50:00 Schep and Tyler talk about the relationship between the veteran community and civilians and how it is evolving. @ 56:00 The guys start to wrap up with where Dead Reckoning is headed and where they would like to see it headed. As well as Tylers future as a fireman and publisher. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pitchbypitch/message
We are briefly stepping away from our normal hunting & outdoor talk, and diving into a different part of our lives. This week we are joined by fellow Firefighter and the Co-Founder of Dead Reckoning Collective, Tyler Carroll to discuss our passion for our job in the fire service, and how it directly impacts and influences our need and desire for things such as writing, hunting, and the outdoors. Tyler shares some of his personal background as a veteran and a first responder, along with what he and his publishing company, Dead Reckoning Collective strive to do for today's veterans. Tyler, Nick and Sam unpack a lot in this episode, as they talk about how important it is for everyone to have coping mechanisms and mental escapes, whatever they might be, in order to remain grounded. This is an episode centered around our veterans and first responders, in an unusual, yet fascinating collaboration.

In this Veterans Day episode I sit down with the crew behind The Dead Reckoning Collective. They were instrumental in publishing the book In Love & War The Anthology of Poet Warriors. They have also put out a book of their own work called Fact and Memory. We get a chance to talk about how The Dead Reckoning Collective was formed and what there mission is. While in Texas they hosted their first event allowing veterans like myself to read some of our poetry to a live audience and enjoy a concert from a veteran musician and storyteller named Padre Paul Handelman. Check out their website or the description in the video for this episode on my YouTube page for links to the mentioned books.
