Chris Sims: When Terminology Creates Misunderstandings, The "Ideal Days" Story Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. In this insightful episode, Chris Sims shares a valuable lesson from his early days implementing XP and Scrum. Chris's team had established an effective workflow using relative estimation with "ideal days" rather than story points, achieving good predictability and velocity measurements. However, things took an unexpected turn when a skeptical VP discovered their tracking spreadsheet and misinterpreted their metrics as showing only 2.5 days of work per week. Despite Chris's best efforts to explain the concept of "ideal days," the misunderstanding tarnished the team's reputation. Chris emphasizes the importance of socializing your working methods with stakeholders and communicating in ways meaningful to leadership. Working "under the radar" can backfire, so transparency about your processes is crucial for organizational alignment and trust. Self-reflection Question: How transparent are you about your team's estimation methods with stakeholders who might not be familiar with agile terminology? [Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]
This week on Teach Me Daddy, Matteo Lane and Chris Distefano learn how to make Chrissy's famous breakfast waffles!! This isn't your typical waffle-making session—Chris's approach is a bit all over the place, but that's what makes it fun! These waffles are more like delicious sandwiches, packed with a variety of ingredients that you wouldn't normally find in traditional waffles. Chris's special waffles include a flavorful mix of peanut butter, creamy yogurt, coconut oil, rich chocolate, almond spread, honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Despite Chris's enthusiastic efforts, it seems like there might be some ingredients missing! Can you guess what they are? Listen to this podcast and see if you can recreate these eclectic waffles at home. As Matteo tries to follow along, he quickly realizes that this is more about assembling ingredients rather than cooking. The process is chaotic, but the end result is incredibly yummy. The episode is filled with laughter, fun moments, and the joy of trying something new. In the end, the Daddies enjoy making and eating these unique waffles, proving that sometimes, the best recipes are the ones that are a little unorthodox. In this episode of The New CISO, guest Chris Fredrick, Deputy CISO at Baxter International, returns for the final part of his interview series with host Steve. In parts one and two, Chris shared his background and the lessons he's learned during a breach. Today, Chris joins host Steve to discuss maintaining a productive outlook while looking for a new position. Listen to the episode to learn more about the lessons you can learn at every role, the importance of perception, and job-hunting challenges.Listen to Steve and Chris discuss the best time to leave a position post-breach and how to stay positive in the face of rejection:A New Job (1:40)After working on the SOC with Steve, Chris felt ready for a new challenge. He then saw a role that scared him, making him believe that that was the right position. This decision set him down his CISO path. However, this new position was temporary because when he threw his hat in the ring for the permanent role, it didn't work out. Ultimately, this rejection caused Chris to reflect on his career journey.Doing Things Differently (6:03)Steve asks Chris if he would have done things differently in his interview, knowing what he knows now. Chris would make the same decisions, especially since his time there had many challenges. Even though that role didn't pan out, Chris learned a lot during this time. He built confidence in his presentation skills and had the opportunity to meet more established CISOs. By networking with other CISOs, Chris realized he truly belonged in the security world. The Value of Stoicism (10:05)Chris advises on how to handle job rejection. He refers to Stoicism, which states we cannot control the outcome but can control our perception. When bad things happen, we can perceive it as a positive that will set us on the right path.Looking For Work (15:35)Despite Chris' impressive career history, it took him months to find his next role. After evaluating his many interviews, Chris recommends that security recruiters learn more about the field to better choose candidates. Chris and Steve then discuss the other lessons Chris learned during the job-hunting process, including what questions interviewers should or shouldn't ask. Referring to Stoicism again, Chris also recommends structuring a routine around job hunting, including doing a positive hobby you enjoy. The New CISO (28:32)To Chris, being a new CISO means understanding that we are tasked with the impossible. Therefore, it's essential to build an environment where people never feel like they are being asked to do the impossible for the ungrateful.Links:Linkedin

Vapotherm is a medical device company. Chris Walker, the current CEO of Refine Labs, had joined Vapotherm in 2017 as the first marketer among 40 Outside Sales reps. Chris saw sellers prospecting and driving hours to meet buyers that were not well-informed and rarely had intent to buy--because they had not been marketed to. So, Chris interviewed and surveyed buyers to find out why. He discovered that they spent a lot of time on social media like LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. It was often on these platforms that they would learn from their peers, including about vendors. So, Chris co-created content with his audience's peers, and then distributed that content via Facebook ads, YouTube, website, email list etc. Buyers consumed that peer-created content, shared it with their peers, came to the website to learn more, and would eventually request a demo. Chris tracked those demo requests to revenue, discovering that their win rates were 3X-5X higher, and their sales cycle decreased 72% from 210 days to 58 days. Chris' efforts were driving almost $1M in revenue PER MONTH within 9 months. Eventually, Chris was delivering 40% of net-new customer logos. Despite Chris' success with proper Marketing, he had to battle executives for resources. To fight to buy HubSpot, to fix the website, to produce content, to distribute it on Facebook. Chris eventually got some resources, but most of it went to prospecting and Outside Sales. Not long after, Chris liberated himself and went on to create a leading B2B Marketing agency. How many companies are not attracting, motivating, and retaining marketers like Chris Walker? This is another example of how even just a little bit of Marketing is vastly superior to Sales Development/Prospecting. Imagine if Vapotherm had repurposed all their Prospecting investment to Chris and Marketing. As a Marketing leader, fight to do proper, non-spam Marketing. Prove the superior results relative to prospecting. If ownership denies you the freedom, leave. They do not deserve you. Get started on implementing The Buyer Centric Revenue Model by making the business case for the experiments to prove it and achieve a gradual transition. Continue the discussion and get help implementing the model in the Buyer Centric Revenue Model community. Join the movement of forward-thinking peers liberating and modernizing B2B Marketing and Sales. Achieve a better growth playbook, a competitive advantage, and more productive and fulfilling careers. We finally did it! We finally reviewed The Shining! Sorry it took so long, but we knew this one would be a doozy. Easily the densest ‘meeting' yet, our Shining episode is packed with behind the scenes trivia (spoiler alert: Kubrick is insane) and comparisons to Stephen King's original novel. Despite Chris's somewhat apathetic reception of the film when compared to Kate's predictably enthusiastic review, The Shining finds a cozy spot in the Top 5 of the #NHMovieClub scoreboard.
Chris, Rob and John are joined by YouTuber, content creator, and overall bundle of positive energy Burke Cullinane. Make sure you check out Burke's YouTube Channel here. Enjoy!!

Despite Chris (the "Third Guy") being set upon by some sort of throat ailment, the RFS crew set forth and valiantly commentated on "The Family of Blood," the second part of Paul Cornell's season 3 magnum opus and a corking bit of Who into the bargain. We also miraculously rescued 14 minutes of news from the doldrums of between-season uneventfulness.
