Alternatives to College~Praxis Is University or College the only option? I know University is what we push, or aspire our kids to attend. We try our best to use their childhood to prepare them it. Not to prepare them for adulthood, but for college. I even notice at times that people measure the success of homeschooling or unschooling on...college. Were they able to get in, did they attend and if they did, where did they go? How did they do? There seems to be the perception that "something must be wrong with you if you don't go to school." But really, is there something wrong? Or have there only been limited alternatives and viewpoints up until now? What are the alternatives to College? If you are familiar with my podcast, you will know that I am all about exploring the alternatives. I showcase the unique learning lives that families have created. I want to continue offering these numerous perspectives and this episode is no different. This time I am showcasing a different perspective on post secondary education. It is called Praxis and I am joined by the CEO of Praxis, Cameron Sorsby. Praxis~ Get matched with a full-time, paid apprenticeship without the cost or hassle of college. No degree required Cameron Sorsby is the CEO of Praxis, a year-long apprenticeship program that combines a professional bootcamp and a full-time paid job at a high-growth startup. The program offers a direct route into entrepreneurial careers for driven young people without the cost and hassle of college. Outside of Praxis, Cameron enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, and reading. As a former public and private school student, he's very jealous of all the amazing homeschoolers that join Praxis. In This Episode~Praxis Philosophy In this episode Cameron and I explore the core philosophy of Praxis- that the best way to learn is through experience. We talk about how and why Praxis came to be in 2013 and what it looks like now. We break down the 3 different stages of life and learning at Praxis and why this program is so uniquely different to traditional college and university. It comes down to: The career discovery process and the foundational skills that a person needs, no matter what The job hunt and landing a job- being pro-active and creative Setting yourself up for continuous growth and learning Apprenticeship and mentorship At a fraction of the cost Did you know that close to 40% of Praxis alumni we homeschooled? That is a high number. And it speaks to the core philosophy of the program- that the best way to learn is through experience. It is a philosophy that many homeschoolers connect with. That philosophy and the choice of developing and betting on "self" instead of a traditional education and career path. That happens is the chance to build like and career on your own terms. I know many homeschoolers that wholeheartedly agree. Here are a few cornerstones that Cameron left for us in this interview. He was referring to guiding principles for young people facing the world, but I feel they apply to each one of us. Gain Work Experience Don't equate education with formal school- pursue interests, go down rabbit holes, learn as much as you can Don't be a consumer of content- Be a creator of content Get uncomfortable, get over the perfectionist mindset and develop the ability to do things with intention Resources If you connect with these and would like to learn more about Praxis, I suggest that you go to their website, DiscoverPraxis.com, join their newsletter or follow them on social media @DiscoverPraxis- on Facebook , Instagram and Twitter If you enjoyed this conversation and would like to hear more about homeschooling or unschooling and college, check out my interview with Hannah Frankman, a grown homeschooler that found a career at Praxis. In this episode, I interview Cameron Sorsby, the CEO at Discover Praxis, an online career boot camp business that offers content, weekly meetups, mentoring, and project-based learning to entrepreneurial young professionals that Cameron started in 2014. Starting off with 14 participants, the boot camp has always focused on soft skills and mindset (not education for any specific role or industry) that expose them to most corners of the business so they can find and then hone their professional passion. At the end of the course, they’re placed in fast-growing companies seeking talented young people with what they have coined as “Forward tilt” (Young professionals who want to add real value, have initiative, and a sense of urgency)  At age 24, Cameron helped found the business, growing it from 4 full-time employees to 11 full-time employees within 6 years. With $12,000 for the 6-Month course, first-year revenue grew from $30,000 to around $1.5 Million in 2020. Since 2017, they’ve had over 100 participants a year and maintained a 90% graduation rate. The next stage of growth for them is ramping up their marketing while maintaining higher product quality aiming at reaching the 500 participants a year mark. Their funding was from bootstrapping for the first year and a half after which they took on $500,000 in investment in 2015. Cameron believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is persistence; the longer you go, the more likely you will survive and thrive. The advice he would give himself on day one is, practice patience. Stay tuned for more of his business growth insights.  This Cast Covers: Helping young professionals become ninjas in their workplaces. The skills and mindsets that enable participants to become entrepreneurial employees. Working with companies that are willing to take a chance on young talent. Their multimodal course structure and delivering it online, through an alumni network and meetups. The number of fees they charge per participant and where the original idea for Discover Praxis came from. From 14 participants in year one to 100+ participants in 2017, and a projected 500 participants in 2020. Fine-tuning their offering and maintaining the quality while building on their marketing and sales. The importance of having the right talent and strategies for the business stage one is in. Focusing more on learning so they can have a tighter game plan. Constantly looking for the next challenge instead of getting caught up on the level of success. Falling in love with the day to day processes of everything and the great outcomes that can come from that. Getting a $500,000 seed round funding from small family offices. Dialing in on their customer service to create more value for participants. The most stressful point in his small business growth journey. Cameron’s biggest mindset shift and how it helped him grow the business exponentially. The value in a small business owner having strong team management skills. Valuing and pursuing professional development. What you are going to LEARN in this episode: If college is still a smart investment How much entrepreneurs benefit from attending college What employers really think of your diploma The importance of building an “experience portfolio” Today’s guest is Derek Magill, college dropout turned online marketing entrepreneur, author and business strategist. Like most high school students, Derek was told that college was the absolute best idea to ensure he lands a job and makes a “good living”. During his second year of college, Derek started to realize that the most valuable and enjoyable parts of his life were when he wasn’t in the classroom. He started a small t-shirt company and made a few thousand dollars while in college. Before long he felt like he was creating far more value in the world by selling shirts than he was by writing essays to only turn in to his professor. He says, “you are never actually creating anything or building anything valuable during your college career.” Rather than sitting in class and continuing to learn more and more theory, Derek recommends building a website, learning how to sell something online, or maybe start a podcast or blog. By the time your peers are graduating from college, you’ll have a portfolio of experiences and assets that you’ve built for yourself. I can assure you that, as someone who’s hired dozens of people, this type of “portfolio of experience” is waaaaaaay more valuable than a diploma. We end the show with a discussion about why “college dropouts” have such a negative stigma and how college may be just an extension of our under-performing public high schools. If you are a highschool or college student, then don’t miss the Derek’s advice towards the end about taking a “gap year” and learn from the real world rather than only experiencing professors, textbooks and exams. LE30: Isaac Morehouse - Experience Based Education The question “is college actually worth the cost” is now being asked by countless students and parents. What is the purpose of college in an age where everything is available online? What is the actually experience that you are paying for? Is it to learn a skill or is it mostly a sham? This week’s guest, Isaac Morehouse, believes that there’s a better way and built a new type of educational opportunity that is founded in mentorship rather than studying for tests and going to class. DiscoverPraxis.com gives students an opportunity to work along-side real entrepreneurs and see the day-to-day, inner workings of an actual company being built. This is actionable education that you simply cannot get by sitting in class for 6 hours/day. Praxis = Combination of theory and practice Will Isaac change your perspective on “education” vs “experience”? Do you go to college? If so, how valuable did you find it? Were you left with a large student debt bill at the end? Is there a better way….? Favorite sections and quotes: “Build an alternative! Stop arguing about why “higher education” sucks, but instead give them a choice of something different. If you can create value and can offer a better way, then people will want it.” “Entrepreneurship is “philosophy in action, it’s applied philosophy”. “Do you see yourself as Me Inc? You are your own company and brand. How can you increase the value you bring to others and how do you signal that to the market?” Question (towards the end): What would the world look like if education was based on a mentorship or apprenticeship system rather than sitting at a desk, reading a book and regurgitating system?
