Is a college degree still worth the rising cost? As student loan debt climbs and tuition skyrockets, more families and young adults are asking whether a traditional four-year education offers a worthwhile return on investment. In this episode, we break down the financial data behind college costs, degree value by major, and explore growing alternatives like trade schools, certifications, and apprenticeships. Richard Rosso & Susan Buenger posit whether higher education is still the smart path — or if it's time to rethink the college equation. The dip in global population is something that's been gaining attention as of late, but mostly in the abstract. Something concrete in that dip is about to come due this fall, a staggering drop in the number of available 18+ year olds for the traditional college path. The first bellwether in what my guest for this episode labeled in a piece that, America is about to go over the ‘demographic cliff'. Journalist Jon Marcus, joins for this episode to explore the intersection of demographic shifts, higher education, and the implications for the workforce. The conversation highlights the decline in birth rates, the resulting impact on college enrollment, and the broader economic consequences of college closures. We also get into the cultural perceptions of the value of a college degree and the challenges faced by institutions in adapting to these changes. Before ending on potential strategies for colleges to navigate the impending demographic cliff and its effects on education and the economy.

In this episode, I'm picking up on a topic we've been talking about—credibility, credentials, and who people choose to listen to. I've got a college degree in business from Pennsylvania State University, so I'm not speaking as someone who's against education. But I'm asking a real question today: does a college degree actually mean you're competent? Some folks with degrees might not like what I have to say, but I'm here to tell the truth. Let's not delay the inevitable. Let's get into it. Show Notes: [02:28]#1 Holding a college degree does not make you competent. [10:47]#2 Having a degree or credential doesn't automatically make your words valid or worth following. [20:06]#3 Your argument should stand on its own merit, not on your credentials or resume. If you are a listener to this podcast, it's very likely that you went to cosmetology school. It's also likely that those classes never added up to a degree. Right now, that is changing. L'Oreal has teamed up with Arizona's Mesa Community College and Arizona State University to create The Lead Institute, a program where cosmetology school graduates can apply credits from beauty school towards an associates or bachelors degree. In this episode, host Blake Reed Evans and Sherilynn Smart talk about going back to school, not an easy endeavor for any busy professional. But, even with a full schedule, doing hair and working in education, Sherilynn is finding time to get a degree in less than one year. From planning your schedule to getting a full scholarship, Sherilynn tells us how she did it, and how anyone who has been to cosmetology school can make this move for themselves. This episode was originally published in January 2022. Most Californians want their kids to go to college, but in this era of rising costs and exponential tuition inflation, is it even worth it? Many California families worry about whether they can afford to send their kids to college, and are trying to pencil out whether it makes economic sense in uncertain times to spend the money, or take on potentially crushing debt to help their kids get a higher education. Well, a new study took a look at that, to do the cost-benefit analysis of investing in a college degree, and for more, KCBS Political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with one of the authors of that study. Marisol Cuellar Mejia is a research fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, she has two masters degrees in economics.

In this episode, Randy Wilson and Greg Junge engage in a thought-provoking discussion about the value of education, particularly focusing on the relevance of college degrees in today's job market. They challenge conventional beliefs about success, emphasizing that it is not solely defined by monetary wealth but also by personal fulfillment and happiness. The conversation explores the concept of 'useless' college degrees, the importance of skills over formal education, and the value of self-education and mentorship in achieving entrepreneurial success. Joining the show this weekend is UW Green Bay Professor and Chair of Democracy and Justice Studies, Dr. Jon Shelton and Human Rights Activist and older brother of your host, John Becker. Mark asks to dive into a publication Dr. Shelton published earlier this month: Why Democrats Are Losing Americans Without a College Degree—and How to Win Them Back, an article summarizing how voters know that the economy has not worked well for decades. Dr Shelton says Democrats must offer a transformative vision and stick to it for as long as it takes. He believes as a party the democrats aren't offering enough for working people and what happening is Americans are desperately voting for something to change. "We need working Americans to see what it is that they deserve and that the party is fighting for them and with them." It's not an idea that needs to be sold, its something to build toward together. How do we take a profoundly challenging question and talk to people with that integrity and hit them right between the eyes and make it make sense? We need to have a very clear narrative and message and stick to it. This is not the first time American's have faced dark times and Dr. Shelton believes we will make it through it. During Mark's Musings he dives into the big topic of why. Why did that happen? How can we avoid it happening again. How do you have a rational discussion when people live every day in a world that's so irrational? Join the discussion. It used to be true that a college degree was the sure path to success. But that's not necessarily always true today. In "Rethinking College," award-winning journalist Karin Klein suggests another path for our country's students and their families.
AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports money in NCAA sports has changed the lives of only a few athletes.
A lot of things will really change over the course of this week, no matter the election outcome. And with that, we were thinking it would be good to share a conversation that would be illuminating regardless of what happens. Over the past few decades, American society has experienced seismic changes. One of the trends we have seen is a rightward shift towards the Republican Party among voters without a four-year college degree and a pro democratic center-left shift of voters who have a four-year college degree. There's a lot to unpack about what has animated these changes. Matt Grossmann is the director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research and a professor of political science at Michigan State University. Dave Hopkins is a political scientist at Boston College. Grossmann and Hopkins are the co-authors of “Polarized by Degrees: How the Diploma Divide and the Culture War Transformed American Politics.” They join WITHpod to discuss the origin of these trends, the effects on both major parties and more.
