It's a rollercoaster week on The HSS. Some newfound Beasties kick it all off as we head into DJ Spooky doing some of his best work on the Trojan Records catalog. The brand new Gunshotta by Machinedrum takes us dark and steppy followed by Paper Diamond and Trouble Andrew. After the break we start dark and moody with M.Rahn and then somehow end up at the opposite side of the spectrum raving out to a Rihanna remix followed by some seriously old school rave stylee from Tin Man. If we weren't so secure with our music selections over the past 90 shows we'd be ashamed but we aren't. DJ Kentaro brings us back to the now with his remix of Reso's Check 1,2 and Modeselektor cry out for the bass drum. The Beasties bring us home in fine style as we try to figure out what the hell we just played. www.HoweSoundSystem.com www.facebook.com/HoweSoundSystem Tracklist: Beastie Boys - DOn't Play No Game That I can't Win DJ Spooky - Revolution Disco Dub Machinedrum - Gunshotta Paper Diamond - All Green Lights Trouble Andrew - Adorable M.Rahn - Confused Mass Rihanna - Where Have You Been? London based producer and DJ, Reso a.k.a Alex Melia is a man with a fascination for all things robotic and futuristic. His hybrid of hyper beats and tech-basslines sometimes feel more suited to a post-apocalyptic Tokyo than the contemporary concrete of most dubstep and we dig it. "A truly inspiring experience his music’s mech-mania induced synthesesia conjures images of neon-tinged neo-Japanese cityscapes, powerful hulking automatons and violent bassline machismo." Melia's much anticipated debut LP, ‘Tangram’ was released on Civil Music back in November 2012. As most had expected it shook some serious ground and garnered praise and support from the likes of Mixmag as album of the month, XLR8R, Guardian and MTV as well as from bass music personalities such as Liam Howlett, Skrillex, KOAN Sound, Rusko, Starkey and more. A landmark in the producer's so far pretty underground career, the 13-track LP showcased his flair for intricate programming and love for all things jazz (as a trained jazz drummer), electronica, bass and drums. In 2013, Reso sits at the peak of a new breed of electronic music producers and we're not the only ones to take notice. Within a relatively short space of time, Reso has remixed artists as diverse as Carl Cox, DJ Kentaro, Om Unit, KOAN Sound, Drop The Lime and Buraka Som Sistema. This weekend he'll be descending over Delhi for a exclusive show with Audio Aashram and Wild City at blueFROG and we're willing to put money on the fact that it's going to be an absolute banger. To give you a taste of what to expect he's made an exclusive mix for Wild City, which touches upon a variety of styles of bass music. From upfront and in-your-face tearout bangers right through to some drum and bass and more rolling, deeper vibes. A solid representation of his production style and musical influences. This week we revolt against the man. Starting the set off is The Man himself Johnny Cash singin' about the other man with his cover of Personal Jesus. Then we drop some nice beats courtesy of LCD Soundsystem and a bassy remix of MGMT's Kids. Following that The Qemists kick it into grimey high gear with a remix of DJ Kentaro. Having gotten the aggression out we tone it down with some bvdub and laid back dubby techno. Segue keeps it nice and chilled as we bring the show to a close. Tracklist: Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus LCD Soundsystem - Dance Yrself Clean MGMT - Kids (Soulwax Remix) DJ Kentaro - Kikkake (Qemists Remix) Vibesquad - Jowels SYNKRO - Acceptance bvdub - Another Love Segue - Snow Dub
Dark IDM courtesy of Autechre and The Orb brings 2012 to a close. We start flexing the bass with VibeSquad and a new one by Reso (one of our fav albums from 2012). We transition into the hippity hop with DJ Kentaro and a nice one by DDay One. An old school DJ Food reminds us of where we were 15 odd years ago and sets the tone for the rest of the show as we proceed to chill it out with nice IDM beats from Tycho. DJ Spooky gives Led Zeppelin a work over and we finish with a happy little folk number (as Bob Ross would say) from Benjamin Francis Leftwich. Tracklist: Autechre - Montreal The Orb - Assasin Depth Affect - Junior International VibeSquad - Whittling Reso - Ishimura DJ Kentaro - Enter Newground DDAy One - Terminal 86/Making The Transition DJ Food - Bass City Roller Tycho - Cloud Generator DJ Spooky - Dazed and Confused Dub Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Atlas Hands
14 days till the end of the world and 16 more shopping days till Xmas. The show starts this week with old favorites, Suns of Arqa and their 1987 track He Did Not Die. Bill Laswell's Material project goes Ineffect, with samples from William Burroughs. We continue the eastern vibe with Eccodek from the excellent Bluetech compiled Spirit of La Selva album. New discoveries Celt Islam bring more dubby goodness with Silk Road and Sarayda Dub. Never ones to stay stagnant the boys at the HSS head towards beats with DJ Cam bringing Hip Hop Pioneers from his first album. DJ Vadim grooves it up with Under Your Hat, then former Canadian DMC Champ DJ Brace remixes the Ancient Astronauts track Still A Soldier. Handsome Boy Modelling School's Holy Calamity gets remixed by DJ Shadow and Bomb The Bass brings the Bug Powder Dust. The show wraps up with Reso remixing DJ Kentaro's Kikkake. AudioSurgeon - Episode 006: The New Music Issue, Featuring interviews with Aim and the Iconfactory, and new music from TY, Bonobo, The Format, Braintax and more... CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIOSURGEON IN iTUNES!Well it's several weeks late, and for that we can only apologise, but conflicting schedules, workloads and technical 'issues' have just kept holding us back. As a result there's no central discussion this time, although we promise this will return next time. Saying that, at least you don't have to listen to us wittering on about random stuff this time, and can instead enjoy all the extra new music we've found you instead, from Bonobo and Braintax to Dan Arborise and The Format via Squarepusher and DJ Kentaro. We've also landed two sweet interviews for you; the first with Andy Turner, the man behind Aim, the celebrated UK Hip-Hop act, and the second with Gedeon Maheux from the Iconfactory, the kings of icon design. And regular listeners will be pleased to know that Ask Rina is back. As ever, let us know your thoughts, and on the right you'll find how to leave questions for Rina.MUSIC:Zero DB - Sunshine LazyAlbum: Bongos, Bleeps and BasslinesRelease Date: Out NowLabel: Ninja TuneOfficial SiteBonobo - Between the LinesAlbum: Days to ComeRelease Date: Out NowLabel: Ninja tuneOfficial SiteAim - Intro #3Album: Flight 602Release Date: Out NowPixelsurgeon ReviewLabel: Atic RecordsOfficial SiteAim - BirchwoodAlbum: Flight 602Release Date: Out NowPixelsurgeon ReviewLabel: Atic RecordsOfficial SiteTy - What You Want (Taylormade)Album: CloserRelease Date: Oct 16thLabel: Big DadaOfficial SiteBraintax - Pick A Subject (featuring Verb T)Album: PanoramaRelease Date: Oct 23rdLabel: LowlifeOfficial SiteThe Lemonheads - No BackboneAlbum: The LemonheadsLabel: PolydorRelease Date: Out NowOfficial SiteColdcut - Everything is Under Control (DJ Kentaro Remix)Album: Sound Mirrors - Videos and RemixesRelease Date: 30th OctoberLabel: Ninja TuneNinja TuneSquarepusher - Rotate ElectrolyteAlbum: Hello EverythingRelease Date: 16th OctoberLabel: WarpOfficial siteClark - Vengeance DroolsAlbum: Body RiddleRelease Date: 2nd OctoberLabel: WarpOfficial siteJ*S*T*A*R*S - Loose Nuke Threat (Ask Rina theme)Album: Put Me on a PlanetRelease Date: Out NowLabel: Steel TigerOfficial SiteJohn Smith - Matchbox ManAlbum: The Fox and the MonkRelease Date: Out NowOfficial SiteDan Arborise - Beauty Through Her EyesAlbum: Around in CirclesRelease Date: Out NowPixelsurgeon ReviewLabel: Just MusicOfficial SiteThe Format - OceansAlbum: Dog ProblemsRelease Date: Out NowLabel: The Vanity LabelPixelsurgeon ReviewOfficial SiteAll music used with kind permission.
