Little Brother is a rap group from North Carolina. The three original members – Phonte, Big Pooh and 9th Wonder – were living in their college dorms when they decided to make music together. They hit open mics and played local shows, but they never expected a rags-to-riches story. After uploading a few songs to a hip-hop message board called Okayplayer, they released their debut LP, The Listening. By indie-label standards, it was a hit. They signed to a major label, but their second album didn't perform as well as they would've liked. After being dropped by their label, 9th Wonder left the group and Little Brother disbanded shortly after. In 2019, Phonte and Big Pooh reunited as Little Brother and dropped their album May the Lord Watch. Now, they're on tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. They also have a documentary in the works. This week on Bullseye, Phonte and Big Pooh join us to reflect on their long and eventful career as Little Brother.

Little Brother co-founders ‘Phonte' and ‘Rapper Big Pooh' will be celebrating the milestone with a headlining tour and new documentary coming this year (artists such as Questlove, Doja Cat, and Drake appear in the film sharing their admiration for Little Brother). The group just recently announced Hannibal Buress as the opener for their show in Santa Ana, CA at The Observatory – this coming Saturday 3/4. B. Cox is joined by Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) of the Breaking Atoms Podcast to review Little Brother's classic debut studio album The Listening as it turns 20. The group, which was formerly made up of the trio of emcees Phonte and Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, met as students on the campus of North Carolina Central University. They bonded over their shared love and passion of hip-hop and formed a collective with other North Carolina college students who were hip-hop artists and producers which would become known as the Justus League.Pooling together their resources and creativity, the trio started recording their debut album. After working their local hip-hop scene and the college radio circle in their home state of North Carolina, the group signed its record deal with ABB Records and gained a sizable fanbase, following and a community online though forums such as their own Justus League The LAWN, OkayPlayer and other hip-hop sites. Boosting the groups popularity was the skills and creativity Phonte and Pooh and the soulful sample based production of 9th Wonder that drew comparisons in tenor and tone to predecessors such as groups from the collectives the Native Tongues and Soulquarians. Over 65 minutes and utilizing a concept used frequently in hip-hop, the album is presented through the lens of a radio station broadcast schedule, WJLR, presenting all of the tropes of terrestrial radio complete with skits and fictional disc jockeys which accompanied the album's tracks. While the album had no major singles or sales numbers to report, its legend has been boosted by their niche, but loyal fanbase that has followed them since the beginning. The album has been deemed an underground and indie hip-hop classic and the launching pad of a group that has had a successful, yet complicated two decades in the industry.Follow Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) Onlinehttps://linktr.ee/iamkinetikVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comCheck Out Our Clothing and Merch Shop and Cop Some Gear!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesPassion Weiss: The Oral History of The Lawn (by Chris "Kinetik" Mitchell)https://www.passionweiss.com/2022/03/24/the-oral-history-of-the-lawn/Albumism: Little Brother's Debut Album "The Listening" Turns 20 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/little-brother-debut-album-the-listening-album-anniversaryPitchfork: Little Brother "The Listening" Review https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/little-brother-the-listening/GQ: Little Brother Looks Back On 20 Years Of "The Listening" https://www.gq.com/story/little-brother-the-listening-album-20-yearsHipHopDX: Little Brother on 'The Listening' at 20 & Marauding For Earshttps://hiphopdx.com/news/little-brother-the-listening-20-year-intervew Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

This week, the rap thought podcast tunes to channel 94 to catch UBN’s Minstrel Show. Hosted by Little Brother, which consists of Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh and 9th Wonder, they aim to put a spotlight on black culture with some satirical references via minstrel show. With elements deemed “too intelligent” for radio play, was the content doomed to go over the heads of listeners? Did the term “minstrel show” carry too much weight ahead of the actual album? We discuss all this and more in this weeks episode.Check out more here!Apple PodcastSpotifyInstagramTwitter______________________________________________________Music by: BlueysportInstagram: blueysport

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with Champagne Duane. With sophisticated lyrics and refined presentation, Champagne Duane's music is always celebration-ready. With influences from rappers like Jay-Z, Nas and Eminem, Duane approaches his music with crafty lyricism and storytelling. His debut album "A Toast" contains features from Hip-Hop heavyweights Talib Kweli and Big Pooh as well as soul singers Saeeda Wright and Jarrod Lawson, fusing rap and R&B to capture the essence of 90s Hip-Hop. His most recent release, The Campaign, is the soundtrack to America's political and social climate. The standout track, "Gun Control" asks the question, "what if we shoot back?" in responses to violent killings of Black men and women by law enforcement. Clever and charismatic only begin to capture his approach to Hip-Hop as the Guyana-born artist is poised and confident to create his own lane in the rap game. In an email to DJ Booth, foundational hip-hop group Little Brother has announced their return after a hiatus that lasted nearly a decade. While the group won’t continue with its original three-man lineup, Phonte and Big Pooh have decided to reunite as a duo with producer 9th Wonder’s blessing. The trio originally reunited last summer at the Art Of Cool festival, filling in for a last-minute cancelation. From that performance, which spurred both internal conversation and external speculation about a possible comeback, the iconic group decided to reconnect to release new music and tour once again after officially breaking up in 2010. “I’m excited to announce that my brother Big Pooh and I are back at work,” Phonte wrote. “New Little Brother music and a tour are coming soon. After conversations with 9th Wonder following our Art of Cool reunion show in Durham last year, the three of us mutually agreed it was best for LB to continue as a duo, as Pooh and I have officially been Little Brother since 2007.” This will likely constitute big news for hip-hop heads the world over, including some of your favorite rappers. It can likely be said with little to no exaggeration that Little Brother is essentially the basis for the entire rap game as we know it today. The group’s 2003 debut album, The Listening, was a part of a soul-centric revival of the dynamic that defined seminal groups like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, and inspired dozens of similar groups. Little Brother was instrumental in the careers of both Kanye West and Drake, who guested on songs with the group’s original lineup early in both their rises; Kanye on “I See Now” from 2005’s The Chittlin Circuit: The Mixtape, while Drake featured Phonte and Pooh on “Don’t You Have A Man” and 9th and Phonte on “Think Good Thoughts” from his 2008 mixtape, Comeback Season. Although it’s been some time since then, both rappers have maintained their standing in hip-hop, with Phonte releasing his sophomore album No News Is Good News last year and Big Pooh dropping Home Sweet Home in 2015. Erstwhile member 9th Wonder, of course, has become one of hip-hop’s premier producers, landing placements with Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, his own Grammy-nominated artist Rapsody, and more. The group’s only confirmed appearance so far is Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, September 5 through September 7. A Waste Of Time with ItsTheReal

This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal, we welcome the amazing rapper, actor, producer, podcaster, and personality Phonte - whose new album No News is Good News is available for streaming everywhere now - to the Upper West Side! We discuss Phonte's youth in Greensboro, North Carolina, his East Coast musical influences, what Biggie's Ready to Die album and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle album meant, being bused to a mostly white high school, focusing on sports, performing with his first rap group, The Fu-Tang Clan, making beats on a TASCAM four-track recorder in his room, how his creative writing developed significantly in 11th grade, and attending college, where he met Big Pooh and 9th Wonder. Phonte talks about how he and 9th and Pooh were friends way before they were making music, giving up football, joining the school's drama program, starting a college rap group G.I.M.M.E. (God, I Murder Many Emcees), watching in awe as 9th made beats on Cool Edit Pro, and making records on records on records until they felt their song "The Finest" was about to hit. Phonte speaks on having a child right out of college and balancing his 9-5 at Blue Cross, Blue Shield with the freedom that his budding music career brought, moving forward as Little Brother, the power of the internet and specifically Okayplayer, touring California, taking meetings with Jive Records, ultimately signing with Atlantic Records, what it's like to turn in an album like The Minstrel Show, and how quickly their support system at the label fell apart. We get into the expectations, the environment, the fallout, the bounce back, and ultimately the dissolution of Little Brother, and how Phonte found himself in a place in 2011 where he was ready to create and release a solo album. Phonte talks Foreign Exchange, doing 80's covers, losing loved members of his family, getting married, producing music and TV, writing music and TV, and championing others, finally determining that he had a second solo record ready for public consumption in 2018, and the overwhelmingly positive reactions it's garnered. All that, plus stories about Kanye, Drake, Jeezy, Combat Jack, Oprah, Danny Glover, South of the Border, Petey Pablo, The Source, BET, The Breaks, Sesame Street, and so much more! .More Fresher Than The Produce Section. Hola Digheads! This week, Mike and Josh are joined by rapper, beat maker extraordinaire, and comedian - Mickey Freeland aka Mickey Free! Mickey started rapping in a suburb of Baltimore in his early teens. Although he didn't fully dedicate himself to music until after he dropped out of college, Mickey quickly gained some notoriety in the underground hip hop scene when he produced the track, “C.O.D.,” for rapper Big Pooh in 2009.  Mickey followed that up with his solo album, “The Last of the Tight Wiggers” under the moniker “Mickey Free” in 2010.  Which is available for only 5 bones here!   2011 was the year Mickey joined the super-group “Shark Tank,” which featured longtime collaborator Height, Grunge of Pittsburgh's Grand Buffet, and Canada's Brendan Richmond. In 2012, Mickey helped produce tracks for Jen Wasner of Wye Oak's solo project, Flock of Dimes. And along the way he started telling jokes into microphones. Busy man!   During this ep, Mickey discusses some of the aforementioned facts, and his plans for the future as comedian / musician / creative person as he wrestles with his anxiety of touring and the possibilities of “not making it.”   We also discuss a number of topics during this episode including, but not limited to: Kangol hats, rat tails, TV losing it's middle class, how there ain't no shame anymore, x-ray iPhones, rat tails, Batman symbol shaved in the back of Josh's head, and so much more!   PLEASE rate, subscribe, and provide a nice comment on the iTunes!! This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of August 15, 2012 with some new and classic music from the international Black Diaspora, news and commentary. Our extended commentary this week touched base on the latest info drop by Wikileaks about TRAPWIRE, really mutated animals being discovered around the Fukishma nuclear power plant in Japan, the verdict & international outcry for Russian metal group P***y Riot, the internet back and forth on whether Hip-Hop MC Nas has used ghostwriters or not, the sad passing of classic Soul Music producer Carl Davis (The King of Chicago Soul), some fool in Florida who got arrested because a woman's "booty looked so good, I just couldn't resist touching it" and some other things here and there. There is a brand new Black Agenda Report news mini-segment on this week's episode. The name Ilhame Paris alone says it all. In Arabic, the name “Ilhame” means “inspiration”.  When you are in the presence of Ilhame Paris, you’re not just drawn to her voice, or drawn to her by her incredible beauty, you are drawn by her intense spirit as a wonderful human being. Her love for life and passion for music is not only inspiring, but contagious.   Native of Paris, France and born of Moroccan blood, Ilhame’s musical diversity not only comes from her cultural background, her musical influence comes from a wide range of sources including R&B, Reggae, French Pop, and Jazz. Some of her songs are directly influenced by artists like Luther Vandross, Bill Withers, Rose Royce, and Bob Marley.  Two of Ilhame’s proudest accomplishments is doing very unique covers for the songs,“Waiting in Vain” and “I’m Still Waiting” originally created by Bob Marley. Ilhame not only honors the legend with an incredible cover of the song called “Still Waiting”, but she gives it a unique perspective by singing it in French and Arabic. That’s not all! Ilhame performs the song with Marley’s son, Ky-Mani Marley. Together, they create one of the most astonishing covers by the Reggae legend.   Ilhame’s debut album called, “Just Wish It” is filled with collaborations including Grammy Nominated R&B, Hip Hop, Electronica producer, Nicolay, and Shafig Husayn, who’s most notable work was a writer for Erykah Badu. Ilhame has also collaborated and recorded the songs with T3 of Slum Village and Rap artist, Big Pooh.  Having opened and toured for artists like Erykah Badu, Dwele, Van Hunt, The Roots, and Questlove, Ilhame is demonstrating she has the drive and ambition to do what it takes to become one of the greatest emerging artists of today.
