Strongly correlated electron systems, i.e. systems where the interaction between electrons cannot be treated as an effective potential, are an extremely fascinating, but also very challenging topic in modern solid state physics. The challenge arises in parts due to the simultaneous importance of non-local kinetic and local correlation effects, which make it important to treat both at equal footing. For this reason Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) has in the last decades become the state of the art method for electronic structure caluclations of strongly correlated electrons as it includes local correlation effects exactly, but also respects kinetic effects in terms of an embedding approach. In this talk, we will first motivate our interest in strongly correlated materials by giving an example regarding the fascinating properties that these materials can exhibit. This will be followed by an intuitive introduction to DMFT. Finally we present results from our DMFT studies of two strongly correlated systems: BaOsO3 [1] and tetragonal CuO (t-CuO) [2]. Dr. Debbie Manigat, DMFT, LMFT, is a mental health practitioner and activist. Her practice is focused on infant mental health, cultural humility, and holistic wellness. This week, Monica and Annette chat with Dr. Debbie about the effects of racism on children of all creeds and colors, and how dialogue and respect between people and communities leads to greater understanding.
In this week's episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Maggie Meyers. Maggie is a Doctor of Marriage and Family Therapy and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Maggie has worked with clients with various diagnoses and struggles; however, much of her work has been in the field of eating disorders. For years, she worked in various levels of care and in leadership roles at a nationally renowned eating disorder clinic. More recently, she has decided to fully commit her time at a private practice in the Twin Cities area, called Wholehearted Healing. In my conversation with Maggie, we tackle all sorts of important topics: what's the difference between disordered eating and eating disorders, how social media is shaping beauty standards, why the phrase “strong is the new skinny” isn't helpful, and why it's so important that we not equate body shape/size with health or with worth. What I love about Maggie is that she boldly calls out injustice and that which doesn't bring life. She is a fierce advocate for her clients and for women, desiring they live freely as their authentic self, unencumbered by an unnecessary and unhelpful preoccupation with food or body image. My hope is that our conversation helps to expose some of the unhelpful messages of the beauty industry and diet culture, so that you can shed any life-depleting messages you may have adopted. So, may you be freed and more able to live more fully into the person God has created you to be.

There is so much to consider when working with couples after an affair. The partner who feels betrayed is having a traumatic experience. They feel like the very person the depend on to support them is the one who has done something to hurt them more than anything. It is very important as therapists for us to have a clear sense of how we are helping people heal and recover from these situations. Dr. Jennifer Lagrotte describes the method for dealing with affairs that is taught by the Gottman Institute. The process involves the steps of Atone, Attune, Attach and she goes into detail as to what this looks like in our work with clients. This episode’s discussion: -New approaches to caries assessment and management are available. -Population studies indicate that old ways to assess caries in populations with DMFT underestimate caries by 45% and above. -Early caries can be assessed with new methods of assessment. -Early caries can be reversed with a variety of remineralizing agents. -Patients are not aware of agents that can reverse early caries. -Diagnostic codes are new for dentistry since this year. -Reimbursement for reversal of early caries is rare, except for fluoride varnish for young children. -Evidenced based approaches to treat and manage caries using ICCMS are available. -These can be used to prevent and treat caries in individuals and among populations. An international lecturer, author, clinician and public health dental leader, Dr. Scarlett is a noted infectious disease and chronic disease expert. As the author of the first infection control guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC), she now focuses her career on caries assessment and management for populations. Beginning her career providing oral care to the proud Gullah people of the sea islands below Charleston, she has been a professor and director of dental research at one dental school and head of the hygiene program. Her most recent accomplishment was training over 100 health workers for Ebola Treatment Units infection control last year for the CDC. www.scarlettconsulting.com

This thesis advances and applies matrix product state (MPS) based algorithms to the solution of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and its variants. The advances enable to solve quantum many-body problems in and out of equilibrium that were previously out of reach for any numerical treatment. In equilibrium, this concerns in particular the computation of the electronic --- such as insulating, metallic, spin-freezed and many other --- phases of highly complex realistic models for correlated materials. In non-equilibrium, this concerns in particular the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of the relaxation behavior of quantum many-body systems on short and intermediate time scales.

An efficient computational LSDA+DMFT toolbox for the description of correlated materials has been established. The method developed in this work provides an appropriate description of 3d-transition metal correlated bulk systems, concerning their ground-state properties (magnetic moments, total energies) as well as the high- and low-energy spectroscopies (valence-band angular-resolved photoemission, Fano-effect, optical and magneto-optical properties). The incorporation of the perturbational impurity solvers within the spin-polarized relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (SPR-KKR) Green’s function method gives rise to a fully self-consistent procedure with respect both to the DFT (charge) and the DMFT (localized dynamical self-energy) self-consistency requirements. Thus, the solution of the many-electron problem can be achieved with a high precision. In turn this opens a possibility to investigate very delicate properties, as the orbital magnetic moments of 3d-transition metals. To develop a relatively fast and accurate approach for the low-energy spectroscopies, the DMFT was implemented within the wave function formalism in the framework of the Linearized Muffin-Tin Orbitals method (LMTO). Calculations are performed in a one-shot run, that does not allow to get the charge-self-consistent solution. In such a way all effects of the localized correlations are encapsulated in the Green’s function constructed as a resolvent to the LMTO one-particle Hamiltonian and accounting for the corresponding self-energy via the Dyson equation. The LMTO+DMFT scheme gives in comparison to a plain LSDA a significantly improved description of the magneto-optics in the 3d-transition metals, half-metallic Heusler ferromagnet NiMnSb, as well as for the heavy-fermion US compound.
