Jeff Malec sits down with Christopher Reeve, Chief Investment Officer of Aspect Capital, one of the original managed futures shops with roots tracing back to the "L" in AHL. Chris shares his path from chemistry and early-2000s AI at Oxford to 22 years at Aspect, where he now runs the investment side of the business. Jeff puts every trend following critique on the table, too big, too simple, too crowded, just beta, and Chris pushes back on all of it. They dig into why the edge is real but small, why multi-model diversification is the whole game, and why stacking lookalike models is fake diversification dressed up in a lab coat. The conversation covers cocoa and silver finally paying off, the replicator debate, why bond futures are really just seven yield curves in a trench coat, the case against explicit stops, and prediction markets.Plus King Charles, horses, chickens, and the Superman jokes that write themselves. - SEND IT!Chapters:00:00-01:21=Intro01:22-11:00= From Oxford AI and Chemistry to Building a Managed Futures Powerhouse11:01-18:51= Is Trend Following Too Big and Too Simple? Today we had the very exciting opportunity to take COBT “On The Road” to the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in Golden, CO, where we recorded a special live audience show featuring Dr. Paul Johnson, President of CSM, and Jeff Miller, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Halliburton. Paul has led CSM for nearly ten years and brings extensive experience in academia, previously serving as Dean of the School of Engineering at Arizona State University. Jeff has served as CEO of Halliburton since 2017 and has held multiple senior leadership roles across the company since joining in 1997. Before our discussion, we had the pleasure of touring the CSM campus, visiting with faculty, staff and students, and hearing from select administrators. We were thrilled to visit with Paul and Jeff for a broad discussion on the evolving landscape of energy education, workforce development, and the critical role of industry-academia collaboration in shaping the future of energy. In our conversation, we explore CSM's history, its longstanding focus on engineering, and its deep ties to the energy industry. We discuss the collaboration of Halliburton Labs with universities and research institutions as well as the resurgence of interest in mining, driven by its critical role in energy security and renewables. Paul shares insights into CSM's experimental mine and its applications across energy, defense, and technology sectors, how Mines contributes to U.S. competitiveness in the global energy landscape, and the university's balance between academic research and real-world industry applications. We examine the shift in student interests and industry focus over the past decade, Halliburton's approach to hiring and retaining skilled workers, and the benefits of CSM's emphasis on real-world problem solving. Paul shares his perspective on the increasing importance of hands-on experience in engineering education and the diversity of industries hiring CSM graduates from aerospace, oil and gas, infrastructure, computer science and more. Jeff discusses how Halliburton Labs supports early-stage companies, the role of accelerators in bridging the gap between R&D and commercialization, and differences between “Founders” and “CEOs.” We touch on technological advancements at CSM including its ambitious expansion into space resource utilization and development of a cutting-edge quantum engineering program, AI's growing impact on industry and education, and much more. We ended by asking Paul and Jeff for their vision of CSM and Halliburton in the next decade. Their outlook reflects continued growth and a can-do attitude toward solving some of the world's most pressing challenges. Today was a fascinating exploration of the current state of industry-academic collaboration, the new energy pragmatism we all keep talking about, and the incredible innovation that can happen on a great campus like CSM. As you'll hear, we discuss the exciting Halliburton Labs Pitch Day event taking place in Denver Wednesday. For more information and to register for Pitch Day, click here. If you are in Denver, it's not too late to come in person. Otherwise, you can register to attend virtually from anywhere! We want to thank the teams at Colorado School of Mines and Halliburton Labs for their partnership and hospitality in making today's episode possible. A huge thanks to Paul and Jeff for sharing their time and expertise with us all. And as always, thanks to you all for your friendship and support!
We will review the beginning of experimental and theoretical studies of moire systems and their evolution up to present. We will show how thousands of p orbitals in a moire unit cell of graphene can create single Heavy fermion at moire scale, and how the interaction between such fermions can lead to a perfect quantum simulator of an Anderson model. We will then present a catalogue of possible twistable materials and show how a huge variety of strongly interacting models can be realized in twisted homo and hetero twiste bilayers and multilayers of these materials.

In dentistry, we are always working with precision and control over a patient's situation. Having acute attention-to-detail creates a perfectionist tendency in us all, and this trait is critical to achieving great clinical outcomes. Now, in a clinical setting this makes so much sense. But in a business and operational sense and a broader life perspective, it can be a real financial and cultural ‘handbrake'. Your ability to grow and scale your practice is inversely proportional to YOUR desire for control. In other words, if you desire control too much, it slows you down in your business growth, and your ability to create time for yourself and to create the results you're seeking. In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast we pose the question, on a scale of one to ten, how strong is your desire for control in your business and your life? Dr. Jesse Green walks you through a very truthful and personal journey that will have you thinking differently within the next 19 minutes and 47 seconds. Press play.

The gang discusses two papers that look at convergence (maybe?) in modern arthropods. The first paper looks at plant/ant symbiosis in a genus of ants, and the second paper looks at color patterns in crayfish. Meanwhile, James sees through time, Amanda disappears, and Curt plays on everyone's worst fears. Up-Goer Five (Curt Edition): The up-goer thing is back and able to be used so we are now happy! The friends look at two papers that look at how animals can look a lot like each other. In this case the animals are really small and made of small hard parts put together. The first paper is looking at some of these small animals that live on trees. These small animals can either live in a lot of trees or just one type of tree. The animals that live on just one type of tree also look a lot like each other. This paper looks at how and why this could be. The second paper looks at the color of small but angry animals that live along big bits of water. These animals can be lots of colors. They find that different colors appear many times in this group. They look to see if there are any reasons why, and what they find is that maybe color is changing because color is not a big deal for the animals that are living under the ground. In this episode, Cheryl McColgan shares her journey of strength training and body composition changes over the course of a year. She emphasizes the importance of tracking body composition, not just scale weight, and highlights the benefits of consistent strength training. She discusses her approach to strength training, including progressive overload and full-body workouts. She also mentions the use of supplements like creatine and the importance of proper nutrition. Throughout the year, Cheryl gained 6.5 pounds of lean mass and lost 2 pounds of fat, demonstrating the effectiveness of her approach. Takeaways: Consistency is key in strength training and body composition changes. Tracking body composition, not just scale weight, is important to understand progress. Progressive overload and full-body workouts can be effective in building muscle and losing fat. Proper nutrition, including adequate protein intake, is crucial for muscle growth. Supplements like creatine can support muscle growth. Gains in lean mass and fat loss can occur simultaneously with the right approach. Addressing foot health can improve overall strength training performance and reduce pain. It has been a little bit, but I am excited to be back on the mic and have several interviews scheduled coming up over the next. few weeks, so it should be back to a more regular schedule going here into fall. I promise if I'm ever going to peace out for an extended amount of time again, I will definitely let you know. So don't worry if occasionally there's a week skipped or something like that. I used to put this out religiously every single week on Wednesday and it was a lot easier when I had some interns helping me produce the podcast. But now it's just little me again, all by myself. So and a few things have been going on in not only my life, but in the business. And so that has made things not as regular. But anyway, I have no intention of going away at least not right now. So I will let you know if that ever happens. But anyway, for today's solo episode, I have something to update you on that I've wanting to share for a while. And I've mentioned this before in the past. And that is my Dexa body scan. that I was keeping track of since I started lifting again. And so I've talked about this a little bit in the past, but I might as well share the history again with you before I get into what I've been doing over the last year to increase my strength. and how that's been going and what I've been doing and some lessons that you may want to take away from that process. But anyway, how it all started is that I've been active pretty much my whole life, was a runner for 17 years, played sports in both high school and college. so my first experience with weightlifting was way back in the eighth grade basketball, which at my age is kind of shocking that it Cheryl McColgan (01:58.306)even in my mind to lift some weights to have better sports performance because it definitely, especially in high schools then, you maybe the boys were in the weight room, but it was definitely not a thing for the girls teams. And I think the only reason that I had it in my head was just because I've always had such this personal interest in health and wellness and because I had watched my dad my whole life. He was a runner and he had always lifted weights. He's basically like Jack LaLanne. If you don't know that name at the younger people listening here, go Google Jack LaLanne, but he's very inspirational, was very ahead of his time in terms of being into health and wellness and lifting weights and being very fit.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Confusing the metric for the meaning: Perhaps correlated attributes are "natural", published by NickyP on July 24, 2024 on LessWrong. Epistemic status: possibly trivial, but I hadn't heard it before. TL;DR: What I thought of as a "flaw" in PCA - its inability to isolate pure metrics - might actually be a feature that aligns with our cognitive processes. We often think in terms of composite concepts (e.g., "Age + correlated attributes") rather than pure metrics, and this composite thinking might be more natural and efficient Introduction I recently found myself describing Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and pondering its potential drawbacks. However, upon further reflection, I'm reconsidering whether what I initially viewed as a limitation might actually be a feature. This led me to think about how our minds - and, potentially, language models - might naturally encode information using correlated attributes. An important aspect of this idea is the potential conflation between the metric we use to measure something and the actual concept we're thinking about. For instance, when we think about a child's growth, we might not be consciously separating the concept of "age" from its various correlated attributes like height, cognitive development, or physical capabilities. Instead, we might be thinking in terms of a single, composite dimension that encompasses all these related aspects. After looking at active inference a while ago, it seems like in general, a lot of human heuristics and biases seem like they are there to encode real-world relationships that exist in the world in a more efficient way, which are then strained in out-of-distribution experimental settings to seem "irrational". I think the easiest way to explain is with a couple of examples: 1 - Age and Associated Attributes in Children Suppose we plotted two attributes: Age (in years) vs Height (in cm) in children. These are highly correlated, so if we perform Principal Component Analysis, we will find there are two main components. These will not correspond to orthogonal Age and Height components, since they are quite correlated. Instead, we will find an "Age + Height" direction, and a "Height relative to what is standard for that age" direction. While once can think of this as a "failure" of PCA to find the "true things we are measuring", I think this is perhaps not the correct way to think about it. For example, if I told you to imagine a 10-year-old, you would probably imagine them to be of height ~140 5cm. And if I told you they were 2.0m tall or 0.5m tall, you would be very surprised. On the other hand, one often hears phrases like "about the height of a 10-year-old". That is, when we think about a child's development, we don't typically separate each attribute into distinct vectors like "age," "height," "voice pitch," and so on. Instead, we might encode a single "age + correlated attributes" vector, with some adjustments for individual variations. This approach is likely more efficient than encoding each attribute separately. It captures the strong correlations that exist in typical development, while allowing for deviations when necessary. When one talks about age, one can define it as: "number of years of existence" (independent of anything else) but when people talk about "age" in everyday life, the definition is more akin to: "years of existence, and all the attributes correlated to that". 2 - Price and Quality of Goods Our tendency to associate price with quality and desirability might not be a bias, but an efficient encoding of real-world patterns. A single "value" dimension that combines price, quality, and desirability could capture the most relevant information for everyday decision-making, with additional dimensions only needed for finer distinctions. That is, "cheap" can be conceptualised ...

Press play.

Cheating is both a sensitive and complex topic. It lies at the intersection of sexuality, betrayal, needs, wants, and power. Here we explore something we've noticed in our work: the correlation we've witnessed between the pattern of cheating, and not being in your power as a man. We go over both the experience of cheating as well as being cheated on.In Jason's words, “One of the shadow sides of a lot of Nice Guys is tolerating not being treated well, and in a weird way this has partners treat them even worse.”To be clear, cheating is wrong and causes harm, and we are not condoning it. What we are doing is discussing questions like: What happens when your needs aren't met in a relationship? How do you handle feeling stuck when it comes to sex and relationship?Whether you're dating or in a committed partnership, how do you effectively communicate with a partner when were never taught how to do so?Work with usReady to go deeper than the podcast? We've all got a favorite band. They start off small, playing in tiny venues and relying on word of mouth to build their fan base. Their raw talent and charisma attract a following, akin to how an innovative product captures the market. However, to make a real impact, bands must dream bigger and venture beyond their local scene. This calls for a proactive approach, akin to a world tour, where they engage with fans on a larger scale, promoting their music and playing in major venues.Similarly, in the B2B SaaS realm, a company with a stellar product can build an initial customer base through organic, product-led growth. However, to truly accelerate and attain unparalleled success, incorporating a sales-led motion is essential. This entails a deep understanding of customers, personalizing approaches, and delivering value beyond the product. Like the band embarking on a world tour, this synthesis of strategies requires tactical planning, strategy, and execution. Guiding us through this journey is Tim Geisenheimer, CEO and Co-Founder of Correlated, whose expertise in seamlessly integrating sales-led and product-led strategies proves invaluable for companies seeking to harmonize and leverage these growth approaches.High Level Overview:Leveraging User Data for Outreach: Cold outreach is more effective when it's personalized. Tim Geisenheimer emphasized the importance of utilizing user data to add value in communications, thus creating an impactful sales conversation.Security Can Be an Ice-Breaker: When approaching existing customers for upselling or new prospects, leading with security insights can capture their attention, as security is a prime concern for most businesses.Balance Between Sales-led and Product-led Is Key: Tim pointed out that while having a strong product is crucial, it's equally important to have a sales-led motion to actively reach out to potential customers who can benefit from your product.Be a User of Your Product: “Dogfooding” your product helps you understand its value and talk about it convincingly. Correlated uses its own product, and Tim highlights how this practice can make the product better and also improve communication with customers.Cold Outreach is Evolving: In the PLG (product-led growth) space, pure cold outreach is becoming less effective. Tim suggests that the days of cold sequencing are numbered, and companies need to adapt by providing more value and personalization in their outreach.Implementing Sales-Led with Tim Geisenheimer:Integrating a sales-led approach in a product-led business is akin to adding a turbocharger to an already powerful engine. By complementing the organic growth generated by the product with proactive sales efforts, businesses can achieve a level of growth that is greater than the sum of its parts. Tim Geisenheimer's insights reveal the importance of this balanced approach.Utilize Existing User Data: Tailor your outreach and communication based on how your product is already being used by the prospect or customer. This customization makes your message resonate more and shows that you are attentive to their needs. When reaching out to customers, it's essential to go beyond generic messaging. By analyzing the user data and understanding their interaction with your product, you can craft a message that addresses their specific pain points or highlight features they might not be utilizing fully. This shows that you have put thought into understanding their business and are genuinely trying to add value.Initiate Conversations with Security: Begin conversations with insights on security. This can be an effective way to engage potential clients as it immediately addresses a critical concern. Security is a universal concern among businesses. By initiating the conversation with how your product can enhance security, or providing insights into security best practices, you tap into a top priority for the potential customer. This approach can help in establishing your brand as an authority and building trust early in the conversation.Create a Defined ICP (Ideal Customer Profile): Know which companies would most benefit from your product and focus your outreach efforts on them. This focused approach makes your sales efforts more efficient and effective. Having a well-defined Ideal Customer Profile allows your sales team to target the right businesses with precision. This means that the communication and outreach efforts are directed at those who are most likely to benefit from your product. It saves time and resources, and increases the probability of closing deals as you are talking to the most relevant audience.Employ Your Product in Your Sales Process: Use your own product to understand it better and to find customers. This firsthand experience enables you to discuss your product more authentically and persuasively. Using your product internally (“dogfooding”) enables you to identify its strengths and weaknesses. This insight is invaluable when communicating with customers because you can talk about real-world applications and benefits. Moreover, your sales team can provide genuine recommendations and tips, making the conversation more relatable and engaging for the potential customer.Evolve Your Outreach Strategies: Recognize that cold outreach needs to evolve. Integrate more value-driven, personalized approaches to engage potential customers effectively. Cold outreach strategies are rapidly becoming outdated. People are more likely to engage with communications that provide value. It's essential to adapt your outreach strategies by incorporating personalized messages that are relevant to the recipient. This could include sharing insights, industry trends, or ways your product can solve specific challenges they might be facing.Implementing a sales-led approach to a product-led business is not merely about boosting sales efforts. It's about intelligently leveraging the strengths of your product, understanding your customers, and communicating value in a personalized manner. As Tim Geisenheimer's experience illustrates, this approach not only enhances customer engagement but also positions your company for sustainable growth in an ever-evolving market.Further LearningsFollow Tim on LinkedIn and Twitter.
