It's Halloween, so we decided to do a "scary" one! Podcaster, author, and emissary from the City of Brotherly Love Trevor Strunk joins to discuss Robert Rodriguez's 1998 Breakfast-Club-Meets-Body-Snatchers riff The Faculty. Boasting a memorable cast of young up-and-comers and a script written by Scream-scribe Kevin Williamson, the film is both playfully self-aware and slyly subversive in its explorations of social hierarchies and the omnipresent 90s fixation with conformity to the monoculture. We begin by exploring how the film updates the Body Snatcher narrative, borrowing (and explicitly citing) the literary works of Robert A. Heinlen and Jack Finney, as well as both previous Body Snatchers film adaptations by Don Siegel and Philip Kaufman. Then, we contend with some of the movie's most intriguing premises - its assertions about capitalist hierarchies and how they maintain the oppression of marginalized out-groups as well as how American society impedes gratifying sexual expression (especially for women). Finally, we examine the deceptively cynical ending and what it suggests about the stickiness of the neoliberal order, its structural hold on the horizons of our sociopolitical imagination. Gary Zukav spent half his life addicted to sex, anger, and the relentless pursuit of external validation, until a chance meeting with physicists changed everything. In this profound conversation, he shares the moment he realized he was exploiting others while believing he was the one in control, and how that awakening led him to understand authentic power. Gary breaks down why our deepest pain, betrayal, loss, grief, is actually communication from our soul, showing us exactly what we need to heal. He explains the difference between love and fear as the only two intentions behind every action we take, and offers a step-by-step process for recognizing which one is driving us. You'll walk away understanding that healing an addiction (to anything) is one of life's greatest spiritual accomplishments, and that the smallest decisions, to stay tender when you want to harden, to pause when you want to lash out, are where true greatness lives. The Gary Zukav PodcastGary's books:The Seat of the SoulUniversal HumanDancing Wu Li Masters: An Enlightening Exploration of Quantum Physics, Eastern Philosophy, and the Interplay of Science and SpiritualityThe Heart of the Soul: Emotional AwarenessIn this episode you will:Discover the core experience every human shares, feeling inadequate and unlovable, and learn how to transform it through emotional awareness rather than avoidanceMaster the practice of scanning your body for painful physical sensations (tightness in throat, heaviness in chest, burning in solar plexus) to identify when fear is controlling your decisionsLearn why every experience in life, even devastating ones like cancer or betrayal, serves you by revealing parts of your personality you need to heal in order to give your greatest giftsUnderstand the law of attraction and karma as inseparable forces, your energy attracts like energy, and every intention you act on creates consequences you will eventually experience yourselfBreak free from the myth that success comes from external achievement and recognize that greatness lives in the smallest moments: choosing tenderness over hardness, patience over anger, giving without a hidden agendaFor more information go to https://lewishowes.com/1838For more Greatness text PODCAST to +1 (614) 350-3960More SOG episodes we think you'll love:Gregg Braden – greatness.lnk.to/1726SCPrice Pritchett – greatness.lnk.to/1821SCDr. Joe Dispenza – greatness.lnk.to/1809SC Get more from Lewis! In this heartfelt episode of The Sacred Speaks, John Price sits down with longtime spiritual guide and Franciscan friar, Father Richard Rohr. Together they explore the deeper dimensions of happiness and meaning—moving far beyond cultural clichés. Drawing on Richard's decades of integrating psychology, spirituality, and mysticism, the conversation challenges conventional ideas of happiness as mere pleasure or circumstance. Instead, Richard invites us to embrace a “just right mind”—a way of living that balances ego, suffering, and joy. Speaking with candor and humility, he reflects on aging, facing death, and the transformative power of love, community, and humor. This conversation is a profound invitation to shift from sin management to radical compassion and participation in a bigger, joyful universal flow. Key Takeaways True happiness emerges from a “just right mind” that balances enough ego to appreciate life without judgment or denial. Happiness is not external comfort, but the capacity to meet suffering with grace and mindfulness. Radical acceptance and surrender open us to a joy larger than the self. Humor and community sustain lightheartedness and connection in the face of life's challenges. In this episode James P. Dowling talks us through the unlikely friendship between physicist Wolfgang Pauli and psychologist Carl Jung. Their dialogue on quantum mechanics and archetypes pulled science and myth into the same room, forcing each to reckon with the other's language. Out of their exchanges came visions of atoms haunted by the unconscious, and shadows that reached into equations. We follow their conversation to ask what happens when reason and dream try to share the same desk.PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-showHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-hereJames' website: https://jungtoliveby.com/00:00 Go! 00:08:00 The Trickster Archetype and Personal Development00:12:00 Intuition and Rationality in Model Making00:16:00 Consequences of the Enlightenment and Modernity00:20:00 Historical Lessons from the French Revolution00:22:23 Discussion of Instinct vs. Rationality in Human Behavior00:24:12 The Role of Dopamine in Human Decision Making00:26:18 The Impact of Abandoning Symbolism in Modernity00:29:00 Motivation in Physics and the Pursuit of Glory00:33:26 The Dichotomy between Science and the Human Experience00:39:11 Integrating Jungian Concepts with Biology00:44:58 Discussing Jung's Word Association Test and Complexes00:50:12 Understanding Affect, Emotion, and Archetypes00:57:32 Jung's Methodology and Interpretation of Complexes01:05:12 Approaching Jungian Concepts in Personal Development01:07:33 The Quest for Identity and Self-Reflection01:09:37 Generational Differences in Self-Concept01:16:52 Life Stages and the Search for Meaning01:19:10 The Duality of Growth and Identity01:25:09 The Healing Power of Creativity01:28:31 Creative Participation as a Human Experience01:32:06 Internet's Dual Role in Creativity01:36:23 Understanding Creativity and Instinct01:39:51 Renaissance vs. Revolution in Institutions01:41:53 Engaging with the Unconscious Mind01:46:47 Shifting Perspectives on Artistic Process01:48:52 Discussion on Competing Teams in Science01:52:34 The Tradition and Lineage in Science01:56:12 Creativity and Glory in Scientific Pursuits02:04:36 The Nature of Truth and Scientific Frameworks02:09:43 Cultural Narratives in Science and AI Development02:10:29 Exploration of Myth and Reality02:12:06 Darwin's Legacy and Evolutionary Theory02:16:52 Archetypes and Scientific Paradigms02:19:14 The Role of Mathematics in Physics02:23:39 Understanding the Limits of Rational Inquiry02:27:24 Simulation Theory and Metaphysical Speculation02:32:05 The Interplay of Mathematics and Experience02:33:00 Exploration of Human Psyche and Evolutionary Perspectives02:36:12 Jung's Insights on Individual Calling and Collective Responsibility02:39:01 Invitation to Further Exploration and Collaborative Learning#jungianpsychology, #quantummechanics, #carljung, #archetypes, #depthpsychology, #unconsciousmind, #psychoanalysis, #philosophypodcast , #sciencepodcast, #longformpodcastMERCH: Rock some DemystifySci gear : https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/AMAZON: Do your shopping through this link: https://amzn.to/3YyoT98DONATE: https://bit.ly/3wkPqaDSUBSTACK: https://substack.com/@UCqV4_7i9h1_V7hY48eZZSLw@demystifysci RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/2be66934/podcast/rssMAILING LIST: https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S SOCIAL: - Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DemystifySci- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DemystifySci/- Twitter: https://twitter.com/DemystifySciMUSIC: -Shilo Delay: https://g.co/kgs/oty671

Today we wander into the layered world of Tim Pilgrim—a landscape architect and gardener who sees soil, water, and wildness as teachers. Tim invites us to connect with the land rather than control it, to design gardens that honour both human need and ecological integrity.Together we explore the art of observation and the quiet discipline of water management, learning how these practices build truly sustainable landscapes. Tim shares how gardens evolve over time, shaped by climate change and by the gentle hands—and sometimes heavy footprints—of people. We tackle the prickly debates too: lawns that demand more than they give, the dance between native and non-native plants, and the cultural stories that every planting choice can tell.Tim also speaks to the community side of gardening: how diversity—of species, of people, of ideas—creates resilience; how food can slip seamlessly into ornamental spaces; how the rhythm of a gardener's life becomes a legacy of naturalistic design. This is a conversation for anyone ready to see gardens not just as pretty spaces but as living narratives—places where history, ecology, and our shared future root down together. We chatted about:Landscapes shape the stories we tell & vice versaA holistic approach to gardening fosters biodiversityDesigning for wildness requires sensitivity & observation.Gardens should evolve with the needs of their inhabitantsClimate change necessitates adaptable gardening practicesWater management is crucial for sustainable gardeningHuman influence can coexist with natural ecosystemsSaying phooey to lawns "I'm not a purist; I embrace all plants that look good"Gardens as spaces for community connection Gardening to build a rhythm that aligns with nature's cyclesGardens as places that reflect personal & cultural historiesGardens as inclusive spaces for all living thingsLinks You'll LoveFind Tim online including his book "Wild By Design"Loved this? A Fine Balance: a podcast that explores how to find a work-life balance that works for you
Productivity is the metric by which so much of our working and home lives are measured. On the surface, it's all about getting done what you need to get done. And who doesn't feel good when you get lots of things you need to do done, right? Yet, what's the interplay between productivity and work-life balance? Does being more productive – so, for example getting more ticked off that proverbial to-do list – result in an improved work-life balance? Or does even the concept of being productive create more pressure in what are already overloaded work and personal lives, that the pursuit of productivity itself hinders the pursuit of balance? My guest this episode – Lyndsey Segal, who is a business coach, trainer and speaker who specialises in time management and productivity - was just the person to broach this subject with. I am delighted to host this conversation with Lyndsey to get her professional take on how addressing your approach to productivity can enhance your work-life balance. Lyndsey also shares her own “work life balance story” of shifting from a career in teaching to becoming a stay-at-home-mum, and then retraining as a business coach and setting up her own business. I hope listeners will enjoy learning both from what Lynsey practices and what she preaches, and will be left with somepractical tips to apply to your own work and home lives, not just to become more productive, but to find a balance that works for you. In this conversation, economist Dr. Victoria Bateman discusses the critical role of women in shaping economic prosperity throughout history. She argues that women's choices, independence, and labor have been overlooked in traditional economic narratives. The discussion covers various themes, including the impact of women's marriage decisions on population control, the relationship between women's independence and technological advancements, and the historical marginalization of women in economic history. Bateman emphasizes the importance of recognizing women's contributions to economic growth and the need for policies that support women's rights and independence.Takeaways Women's choices have historically shaped economic prosperity. Independence in marriage decisions leads to smaller families and economic stability. Women's labor is crucial for technological advancements and economic growth. Democracy is sustained by empowering women and encouraging their participation. The historical narrative often overlooks women's contributions to the economy. Property rights for women are essential for their economic independence. The blend of market and state influences leads to successful societies. The cult of female modesty restricts women's economic participation.Chapters 00:00 The Hidden Role of Women in Economic History 08:03 Impact of Women's Economic Freedom on Society 14:41 Democracy and Women's Independence 21:31 The Gender Gap in Economics 27:50 Household Dynamics and Unpaid Labor 35:03 Property Rights and Women's Economic Roles 38:24 Empowering Women: The Role of Economic Freedom 42:11 The Interplay of Markets and States 44:43 The Cult of Female Modesty: Historical Context 55:58 Modern Parallels: Women's Freedom and Economic Prosperity 59:24 Lessons from History: Women as Economic Drivers 01:04:04 Revisiting Historical Narratives 01:04:29 Conclusion and Call to ActionFollow Dr. Victoria Bateman on Twitter, BlueSky, Instagram, Website, and find her new book here.Subscribe to Breaking Math wherever you get your podcasts.Follow Breaking Math on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Website, YouTube, TikTokFollow Autumn on Twitter, BlueSky, and InstagramBecome a guest hereemail: breakingmathpodcast@gmail.com

Worum geht's? In this episode, Sean Fargo explores the deep relationship between mindfulness and concentration — two practices that are often taught separately but in reality support and sustain each other. Drawing inspiration from his teacher Ajahn Chah, Sean reflects on how concentration serves as the foundation that allows mindfulness to stay steady with the unfolding present moment. Through personal stories from his years as a Buddhist monk and practical concentration exercises, Sean highlights how simplicity, stillness, and focus can help us extend the duration of our presence. From visualizations in the belly to counting breaths, focusing on external objects, or repeating loving-kindness phrases, concentration practice becomes a refuge from the busyness of modern life and a gateway into joy, clarity, and perspective. Listeners are invited to experiment with lengthening their meditations, stringing together multiple sessions, or even holding mini at-home retreats. Sean Fargo also shares candid reflections on challenges like the five hindrances, the difference between grasping and genuine focus, and how deep concentration can lead to profound insights, stillness, and even some of life's happiest moments. What you'll learn in this episode: Why mindfulness and concentration are “two ends of the same stick” Practical techniques to stay present longer, from breath counting to visualization How concentration fuels mindfulness and supports choiceless awareness The role of concentration in overcoming the five hindrances Insights into stillness, joy, and clarity that arise with deeper practice Resources & Links: Watch the full session on YouTube: Staying Present Longer Learn more about Ajahn Chah's teachings: ajahnchah.org Explore free meditations, courses, and trainings at MindfulnessExercises.com Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to Blended! Today, we're talking about menopause. Women's health issues, from menstruation to menopause, have long been overlooked in workplaces, schools, even families. But, increasingly, those issues are coming to the fore. Women are finding their voices and speaking up about the things that impact them every single day. And finally people are paying attention. Menopause has been hitting the headlines. Many organizations are starting to look more closely at the impact of menopause in the workplace, and what it really looks like to be a more supportive, inclusive employer. But where do they start? Awareness, policies and procedures, workplace accommodations, health and wellbeing – there's a lot to consider. Our guests will be shining a light on it today. They'll be exploring what menopause is and what it can look like for women, the stigma and negative connotations attached to menopause, and how organizations can better support women in the workplace. IN THIS EPISODE: [01.15] Introductions to our Blended panelists. · Karin – CEO at NIRAKIO · Nadine – Creative Director and Founder of Mayana · Claudia – Retired Global Supply Chain Executive, DEI Champion and Community Activist [07.08] The group discuss what menopause is, the common symptoms, and what it's really like for women as they navigate this transition. “One billion women will be in menopause at this time. So it's a very lucrative opportunity, and it's also a very predatory environment.” Nadine “It's a natural stage of life that most women experience between the ages of 44 and 55. And, given that women represent 40% of the workforce today – and growing! – its impact on the workplace is a really critical topic.” Claudia · Stages of menopause (peri-menopause, post-menopause) · Psychological symptoms o Mood changes o Anxiety o Lowered confidence o Second-guessing o Feeling a loss of control o Rage o Loss of patience · Physical symptoms o Hot flashes o Night sweats o Joint pain o Weight gain o Sexual impact o Lack of sleep · Cognitive symptoms o Brian fog o Inability to concentrate · Claudia's positive experience of training, awareness and education at IBM · Understanding the impact on women in the workplace · Identifying symptoms · Encouraging women to ask for help/speak up · Link to aging · Cultural differences in symptoms · How menopause impacts women's tolerance level for things they've been socially conditioned to quietly accept · Empathy · Vulnerability · Public display of private health · Uncomfortable · Weaponization/reclaim of language “It's a stage of life that's typically experienced in the latter stages, so it identifies as aging. I identified as getting older. So did that diminish my value to the organization, did they think I could still lead innovation when, suddenly, I'm an older member of the team?” Karin “Black women are the last to get diagnosed, they're the last to get help. And that's where we're seeing these big disparities. The menopause space was predominantly white-facing, and there was not a lot of information for racialized people, so the goal for us is to have that conversation. Because when we're serving everyone, everyone benefits.” Nadine “I started making jokes that I wasn't having hot flashes – I was having power surges! But, in making those jokes, it opened the floor to discussion.” Karin “To have something so personal and health related happen, it amplified that I was female in a room full of males. Not that I tried to dress like men, or act like men – but I never really tried to call out that I was female.” Karin [36.06] The panel explore the negative connotations around menopause, the stigma of aging, and how we talk about menopause, to ourselves and to each other. · Tackling stigma · Creating awareness · Open conversations · Education · Women leaving the workplace · Feeling of diminished value and vibrancy in the workplace · Shame · Women often internalize struggle/‘suffer in silence' · Interplay with personal life · Who's responsibility is it to change the conversation/challenge the stereotypes/tackle the stigma? · ERGs/women's groups · Systemic issue · Creating community · Safe spaces · HR “I was a diversity and women's network leader for many years, and it wears you out… I would like to see more engagement with HR to help fuel some of these things to create awareness and reduce stigma. It can't all be on the women.” Claudia [50.34] The group discuss the impact of menopause on women in the workplace, and how organizations can better support women to thrive, not just survive. · Clear and inclusive policies, processes and procedures · Confidentiality · Consideration of non-binary and trans people · Sick leave/menopause-related absence · Manager training · Sensitivity · Informed conversations · Legal obligations/compliance · Identify appropriate accommodations · Access to resources · Health benefits · Employee assistance programs · Menopause champions · Peer support groups [58.04] The panel reflect on the different ways women can take control of their own health and wellbeing during menopause. · Advocacy · Try something different · Therapy · Alternative medicine · Medical referrals/recommendations · Keeping records · Taking control · Assessing the symptoms that are having the biggest impact on quality of life · Keeping a symptom diary · Proactive approach to health · Understanding triggers and managing responses · Non-judgement [01.03.58] The group sum up their thoughts from today's discussion. In which an Ebenezer appears in this sermon's starring role. An Ebenezer is a stone erected in remembrance of a person or an experience or a place where something special happened. In 1 Samuel, the Hebrew people set up an Ebenezer to memorialize their experience of God's presence with them as they were victorious in battle against enemies. And when a preacher reflects on a poet's reflection on this memorial stone she wonders her way a stone that stands for the end of it all, so that a stone may live its best life as a “mere” stone. Is our free will overrated given that physiological, psychological, and behavioral factors are so strongly influenced by genetics? Looking back on your lives, are you more aware of genetic influences that explain your life journey, your likes, dislikes, behaviors, etc. (beyond your cholesterol numbers!) How “free” is free will in your thinking? For individuals raised in a violent neighborhood in the 20th century, as a slave in the 19th century, or as an advantaged person in the 21st century, do our life circumstances create different conditioning realities that habituate victims and deprives individuals of choices, or is as much of our life, looking back, a matter of genetics?
In this episode, Dr. Scott A. Johnson explores the fascinating relationship between essential oils and gene expression through the lens of epigenetics. He discusses how epigenetics serves as a control system for our DNA, influencing gene expression through mechanisms like DNAmethylation and histone modification. David Carroll, president & co-founder of CU Aerospace (UIUC B.S./M.S./Ph.D.), walked away from a top university post in 1998 to build a rocket company in the Illinois cornfields. A laser scientist by training, he didn't stay in theory—he shipped: electric CubeSat engines, plasma systems, high-energy lasers, and even a genetic-algorithm tool that jumped from lab code to a cancer operating room. This conversation is a builder's tour of how space actually gets made—and what's at stake now. We trace the arc from lasers to flight hardware, from test-to-failure scrappiness to NASA-level safety, and from a small Midwestern shop to engines headed for orbit. Along the way: why smallsats matter more than slogans, the case for high-power electric propulsion (magnetoplasmadynamic, or MPD, thrusters), and how China's Moon timeline and SpaceX/Starlink's launch cadence are quietly setting the rules of the game.If you're choosing what to study, where to live, or which problems to bet your twenties on, this is a field guide: build outside the coasts, turn bullets into cannonballs, ship before you polish, and keep going when the first three proposals get rejected. Cornfields to orbit isn't a metaphor. It's a map. This is The UIUC Talkshow, and this is our conversation with David Carroll.EPISODE LINKS:CU Aerospace WebsiteKim Stanley Robinson's AuroraGood to Great by Jim CollinsAbout CU AerospaceFounded in 1998, CU Aerospace (CUA) operates a 10,000-sq-ft mixed office/lab facility in Champaign, Illinois, with cleanrooms, a rapid-prototyping shop, and dedicated propulsion and plasma labs. This episode is a rebroadcast. Dusty has handpicked episodes from the archive to air while she and Ash are on their annual summer break. New episodes resume in September! Individual context matters and no more when we start to look at the interplay of ADHD and other areas of challenge like trauma or depression. A recent Canadian study that reveals factors and obstacles to succeeding with ADHD is the prompt for this week's episode. Cam and Shelly talk about how listeners can read between the lines of a study and look for information that is actionable. At first glance the study reveals fixed qualities like gender and marital status that contribute to happiness and satisfaction with ADHD. Looking deeper we see the impact of comorbid conditions, trauma, history of abuse and chronic pain, and the importance of support in these areas. Cam uses his recent back injury to highlight the interplay of ADHD and pain. ADHD is often an X-factor when it comes to managing other challenges, exacerbating something like depression or deepening a depressive event. Cam and Shelly talk about the significance of effective supports and what happens when those supports are taken away. Those of us with ADHD tend to downplay the challenge or whether we deserve to address the core issues. This is just the start of exploring the interplay of ADHD and individual context. Physicist and fusion researcher Eric Lerner presents a sweeping critique of the Big Bang theory and the standard model of cosmology at Demysticon 25. He builds on the foundations of plasma physics and the work of Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén to outline an alternative cosmological framework rooted in known physical laws—gravity, nuclear fusion, and electromagnetic plasma behavior—rather than hypothetical concepts like dark matter, dark energy, or cosmic inflation. He explores how filamentary plasma structures may account for galaxy formation, how fusion research using dense plasma focus devices parallels cosmic processes, and how the cosmic microwave background may not be relic radiation from a singular origin. Merging astrophysics, plasma cosmology, and energy research, this talk reframes the origin and structure of the universe—and calls into question the prevailing narratives at the heart of modern theoretical physics.PATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go!
