The Commonwealth Games is in crisis, without a host city for 2026 and possibly beyond. The last Olympic Games bidding process received just two hosting bids, with Paris and Los Angeles awarded 2024 and 2028 respectively. Beyond that 2032 has one current bidder. Five potential host cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics withdrew after voter referendums and public polling indicated a lack of local support. So where are we in sport's relationship with its hosts?Have sports events become just too big? Too expensive, too inflexible, out of synch with the climate crisis, lacking a clear return on investment for the cities and countries that host them, and leaving a questionable legacy in their wake. These questions don't apply to authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China, which gets to a difficult question for major sports rights holders: what are they for? We've lined up three major event experts to discuss these issues:Esther Britten is UK Sport's Deputy Director and is the Head of Major Events at the , responsible for the UK's major sporting event hosting strategy, strategically programming and investing on behalf of the UK government to ensure the UK continues to host the the most significant and impactful major international sporting events. What's going on at UK Athletics? The last few weeks have seen a series of stories about the financial plight of the governing body.In the accounts released in December, UKA returned a £1.8million deficit for 2021-22 with reserves falling from £2.2m to £430,000 in the space of a year.Subsequent stories have referenced job losses and most recently the decision to close its Alexandra Park head office in Birmingham.Today's guest is Ed Warner, who was chair of UK Athletics for ten years between 2007 and 2017. Sports Content Strategy with MrRichardClarke: Exploring sports content, journalism, digital and social media

Ed Warner has something to say. After a decade as chair of UK Athletics (including the 2017 World Championships in London) and a few years in his current role with GB Wheelchair rugby, he is well-placed to comment on the stresses and strains of running a modern sport. Warner wrote a book, Sports Inc, on the subject a few years ago and has just started a blog of the same name.In this podcast, we discuss many of the key issues required to steer a sporting ship towards success: leadership styles, funding models, changing content strategies, marketing, elite sport v participation, bringing in private equity funding and his open application for the role of ECB chair.TOPICSWhy write the Sports Inc blog? What qualities do you need to run a sport as a leader and what qualities do you need in your executive team?"These jobs are advertised as 25 days a year but it needs three days a week!" The consequences for top sportspeople who cheat can be severe. Just ask the likes of Lance Armstrong, Dwayne Chambers and Ben Johnson. But what is it that causes people to break the rules, and how likely is it that the rest of us would make the same decision if the opportunity arose? This week on DTMTS, Simon Mundie sits down with the former chair of UK Athletics Ed Warner to discuss cheating, to unpick what we can learn from those people who followed that path- and paid the price. Ed has written a book about the effects of money on sport called “Sport inc- why money is the winner in the business of sport”, and part of it inevitably focusses on cheating. Ed argues that we should understand how easy it can be to make the decision to cheat, and that we should not be too quick to condemn those who may have been led astray. Part of it boils down to having an extrinsic motivation- so judging oneself solely against the competition and aiming for wealth and recognition- rather than an intrinsic motivation- where the goal is just to be the best you can be. But the importance of values and character shouldn’t be underestimated either.
