Two of Wellington's major foodie events are among those receiving fresh support from the Government's Major Events and Tourism Package. The funding round covers events across sports, food, culture and innovation. Wellington On a Plate and Beervana are set for a boost - alongside Tauranga's AIMS Games, Nelson's arts festival and New Plymouth's Winter Fest. Wellington Culinary Events Trust general manager Penny de Borst says the funding will be used for talent attraction and marketing. "We're bringing in some international chefs and that's an opportunity for our local hospitality community to learn from these chefs - and also for them to get New Zealand products into their hands." Major events are coming to a city near you — soon! From the Super Bowl and FIFA events to large-scale festivals and the America 250 celebrations, fire departments across the country are being tapped to run command and manage attendee safety. “It's exciting and terrorizing at the same time,” Chief Bryan Frieders says of the initial assignment, trying to figure out where to begin. Frieders breaks down the fire service role, namely how command authority is established, communicated and exercised before the first unit arrives. He explains where fire command fits alongside law enforcement, EMS and event organizers, and why unclear roles create operational risk long before crowds gather. Tune in to hear from an expert how to anticipate and mitigate risk. This episode of the Better Every Shift Podcast is sponsored by L3 Harris. Celebrations for Beatrix Potter and other British icons are planned. New museums, including V&A East, will open in 2026. Winston Churchill's paintings will be featured in an exhibition. Theatre performances in London's West End are highly anticipated. Planning ahead is crucial for Anglophiles traveling to Britain. Joining the Friends of Anglotopia Club supports British culture. Sound Bites 1. The Big Commitment (Line 38) "So we closed this deal about a month or two ago and that's a big deal because now I have to do it. There's people counting on me to do this. Macs Adventure is counting on me doing it, my business is counting on me to do it, so I have to do it. I don't have a choice." 2. The Challenge Ahead (Line 14) "It involves physically preparing to walk 84 miles on purpose. And I, as you can see, I'm not in the best of shape. So the idea of walking so many miles is kind of daunting to me." 3. You're All Coming Along (Line 44) "That's the big thing for Anglotopia in 26 is I'm walking Hadrian's Wall. I don't have a choice and you're all coming along for the ride with me." 4. Personal Health Stakes (Lines 26-28) "It's for my own health. I'm not in great health. Preparing training for the walk will improve my health and having done it will also improve my health, and I'm hoping that it kind of ushers in a new era where hopefully once a year I do one of these famous long distance walks in Britain." 5. The Bayeux Tapestry Coup (Lines 105-106) "I don't know how they got the French to agree to this. Apparently it took years of negotiations, but the Bayeux Tapestry is gonna leave France and come to the British Museum for a special exhibition. One hopes they give it back when they're done." 6. Queen Elizabeth 100 (Lines 80-82) "April would have been Queen Elizabeth II's 100th birthday. And so we're expecting a lot of commemorations around that… It'll be a chance for people to kind of reflect and remember the lovely days of the reign of Elizabeth II." 7. The London Museum Opening (Lines 166-168) "It might almost be worth making a special trip for—not just because I like London's history, but it's to see the building itself. The Smithfield Market is an architectural jewel of London." 8. Churchill's Painting Secret (Lines 185-186) "He famously used it to help cope with his mental health, because when he was having the most troubles, he would just go paint, and he would find solace in painting." 9. Television Turns 100 (Line 112) "Many people don't know that a Brit actually made invented television. And so January 26, 2026 will mark the 100th anniversary of Brit John Logie Baird's first public demonstration of television in London." 10. Yes Prime Minister Passion (Lines 220-222) "Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister are my favorite British comedy show of all time. I've watched it a dozen times over and over. Nevena and Macca are joined live in the studio by Rachel Westaway, State Member for Prahran, and Glyn Lewis, Local Author Spotlight. At the 2025 Prahran state by-election, Rachel Westaway was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly with a 13.4% two-party swing in her favour. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Greens MP Sam Hibbins following revelations of an extramarital affair with a staffer] and allegations of inappropriate behaviour toward an intern. Westaway’s campaign was based on addressing “law-and-order” issues, including around the Chapel Street precinct. At the time of her election, Westaway became the first Liberal candidate for a lower house seat across Australia to recover a seat from the Greens, after Prahran became the first lower house seat the Liberal Party had lost to the Greens, in 2014. In October 2025, Westaway was appointed Shadow Assistant Minister for Small Business and Shadow Assistant Minister for Hospitality. Following the change of leadership of the Victorian Liberal Party in November 2025 and subsequent Shadow Cabinet Shadow reshuffle, Westaway was appointed Shadow Assistant Minister to the Leader of the Opposition (Metropolitan), Shadow Assistant Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, and Shadow Assistant Minister for Melbourne. Glyn Lewis, Melbourne based author, was born in the UK, he immigrated to Australia, with his family in 1966, when he was 9. After a long rewarding career in Hospitality Management he tired at the age of 60, when he was inspired to write his fist children's book after watching a mother read to her child in a local library. He started his literary journey at 62 years of age. Now 67 years old, he is passionate about early learning in young children and thought he could contribute and create early learning in a fun and positive way. He now has twenty-nine children's books published of which he is very proud of. His literary journey has taken a different direction as he is now writing Suspense Psychological Thrillers. There's a view that Government funding for major events is a smart investment. The first round of events in its $70 million package has been unveiled, including the first ever concert at Christchurch's One NZ Stadium at Te Kaha next May. Other events include Linkin Park in Auckland and the Ultra Music Festival in Wellington. Auckland Unlimited Chief Executive Nick Hill told Mike Hosking this funding is designed to make existing events bigger. For example, he says, the Readers and Writers Festival in Auckland is a fantastic event, but could they use the funding to make it more international? All the stars have aligned for the first concert at Christchurch's new stadium. Six60 and Synthony will open the music calendar at One NZ Stadium at Te Kaha next May - following Super Rugby's Super Round a month earlier. It's backed by the Government's 70-million-dollar Major Events fund. Duco Events Promoter David Higgins told Ryan Bridge Synthony wouldn't be part of the lineup without that funding. He says these events are very expensive to run, and organisers have to make a risk-return judgement if it's their own neck on the line.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Auckland businesses are gearing up for a busy Wednesday next week - as hotel occupancy reaches 100%. Forty thousand are expected from Metallica fans alone, with the rock band set to perform at Eden Park. Support Wizard Community College! Wizard Community College is a card game with role-playing elements for 3-8 players that can be set up and taught in under 2 minutes. Play as student wizards who are trying to work together to solve their college problems by casting spells they have little control over. Players will take turns casting spells based on the spell cards in front of them by saying what they intend for their spell to do. They then randomly draw a disc from a drawstring bag which will have a color and symbol on it. The player matching the color of the disc will say what actually happens when the active player tried to cast their spell using the symbol on the disc as a guideline. Most of the time, the spell will not go as planned and there will be a magical mishap! Prime Minister Chris Luxon recently claimed he wants a constant flow of events to draw in international guests in order to stimulate the economy. This follows big names in the tourism sector, like Sudima Hotels, calling for further investment into major events. Eccles Entertainment founder Brent Eccles says the nation's major events fund has only covered sporting events, not concerts. "It's quite a long lead time to access the fund - and with contemporary music, you don't have that lead time, it's pretty hard and fast. So we'll never quite be able to qualify." Steve Armitage Hospitality NZ chief executive agrees extra funding is needed to bring more events to New Zealand. "There are a lot of other artists I think it'll be great to bring here - Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles... first class, international entertainment works well in a stadium." Today, we are getting in the way way-way back machine, back to February of this year for a journey to Las Vegas for KBIS, the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show. It's funny to me that even though this was only a few months back, it feels like a lifetime ago. So much has happened this year. But if you recall, in February, before protests, riots, big bills, big balls, tariffs, and all the rest of the chaotic shenanigans, there was KBIS. It was an extraordinary show this year. Part of that were the conversations that took place. I am going to share three of them with you today: Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! - Where service meets excellence TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep One event over 3 days, 3 conversations in one episode of the show today and very different perspectives on the industry and design in general. Sharon Sherman | Thyme & Place Jamie Gasparovic | Studio Gaspo Hannah Goldberg | Hannah Charlotte Interiors Amazing, right? Thank you Sharon, Jamie and Hannah. Thank you to all of the incredible people from KBIS, NKBA, Emerald, Flying Camel, Leeann, Rachael and everyone else who made this experience possible, and made it possible for me to bring it to you. I want to thank my partner sponsors who help make this show possible: Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home, a Best Buy Company, TimberTech, and Design Hardware. Thank you for listening, subscribing, and sharing the show with your colleagues. Your support means everything, and it helps grow this conversation across the design community. Make sure you subscribe to Convo By Design so you never miss an episode. We have more incredible guests, ideas, and conversations coming your way. Please keep those emails coming. You can reach me directly at convoByDesign@outlook.com, and be part of the conversation on Instagram, @ConvoXDesign—that's Convo X Design with an “X”.. These are complex issues that requires both deeper thought and immediate action. I want to thank every one of our expert guests for their insights, time, and passion. We are surrounded by complex issues, are we not? That's why I have been encouraging you to manage these complicated times. Because it's real. It's exhausting. But, from transition, comes opportunity. It is just a matter of thinking about it differently and finding the shiny, glimmering opportunities amongst dark and ominous clouds. So, stay focused and rise above the chaos. - CXD

Terrell is back from DR celebrating Krew's 2nd birthday this episode of the MalloryBros Podcast of course starts with a recap of the trip and it's not all sun and sand. He got his ass beat in the airport, was stuck in New York with his lady and kid, had hotel problems, and some MO SH*T. Either way he had a good trip with the family. You could tell the bros were excited to be back in each other's presence. Terrance talks about finding MAGGOTS on his trashcan after his electric fly-swatter habits failed him. The Bros then talk about the negative reactions to Lil Wayne's Carter 6 Album and how a lot of it is honest, and a very small amount comes from the position Wayne's positioned himself in the last year. Later, they shift gears to talk about The Algorithm and how it seems to be taking over Major Event placements like the next "Superbowl Halftime Show" Performer. This transitions right into a roast of Popeyes' new wrap that Terrell finally tried... and yeah, it's not good. Then the Bros have a real discussion about whether an actor's social media presence can actually hurt box office success. This is fueled by Denzel Washington's advice to Michael B Jordon on his online presence. Are actors use of Social Media hurting their box office appeal? BECAUSE ITS THE BIGGEST GROWING MEDIA, Streaming is again discussed, this time a discussion on — is it really more sustainable than YouTube, or are both just different devils in the same suit? This leads to the heaviest topic of today's episode which is the VIRAL clip of Black American Actor Woody McClain walking out of a podcast in TEARS after speaking on his experience in the industry being "typecast"in roles that portray him to be dangerous. Terrance brings some heat on this one. And finally, with Tyler Perry and Taraji P Henson's STRAW being number 1 on NETFLIX, they close with a conversation about Tyler Perry's recipe for his films and how his heavy handedness with the TRAUMA has left a stain on his menu. The Bros are back ... let's cook. REALEST 9 forever! Love you guys.
