As heard on The Debbie Nigro Show There's a hot new real estate migration trend picking up steam among Northeasterners and former Floridians: they're becoming “Halfbacks”—people who moved to Florida, found it a little too much (too hot, too humid, too everything), and are now settling halfway back up the East Coast. Their happy medium? Coastal North Carolina. On The Debbie Nigro Show, I got the inside scoop from Jason Faulkner, General Manager of Kingfish Bay Development in Calabash, NC—one of the fastest-growing destinations for these lifestyle-minded movers that's just minutes from Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle. They recently won a prestigious 'Best Outdoor Living Award' for their exceptional integration of indoor-outdoor living spaces from the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association. Key Takeaways: · Halfbacks Are Flocking In: Retirees and pre-retirees from New York, New Jersey, Boston, Philly, and Florida are relocating to Calabash for its mild four seasons, coastal charm, and resort-style living. Kingfish Bay Is Hitting the Sweet Spot : Award-winning home styles, riverfront views, private beach club access (with actual parking!), and outdoor living spaces with pools, porches, fireplaces, are what people seem to want. They also are drawn to a great fitness center, the tropical pool complex, fishing pier, outdoor amenities—and pickleball nearby for the fans. · Laid-Back, Not Boring: Calabash is just minutes from Myrtle Beach and close to Wilmington, giving residents easy access to top-notch golf, restaurants, entertainment, and healthcare. One question I just had to ask Jason on behalf of some women I know. How's the hair weather there? "You know there are women who would not intentionally move to a place with bad hair weather. Just saying." – Debbie Nigro

Darrick Doerner is a big-wave surfer, tow-surfing pioneer, Hollywood stuntman, and former North Shore lifeguard. He grew up surfing in the LA area in the 1960s and '70s, moved to Hawaii his senior year of high school, and discovered himself joyous and at peace in heavy water. Hungry for waves too big to catch manually, Doerner and his pals Laird Hamilton and Buzzy Kerbox started experimenting with personal watercraft assists in the early 1990s. Not long after, they began towing into Peahi, aka Jaws. In Hollywood, Doerner stunt-doubled for Bodhi, Patrick Swayze's character, in 1991's Point Break, and appeared as a stunt surfer in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day. In this episode of Soundings, Doerner and Jamie Brisick talk about the allure of Sunset Beach, his memorable ride at Waimea on Super Bowl Sunday in 1988, friendship, the importance of being attuned to your environment, drawing lines on giant waves, and working with Eddie Aikau.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Susan Seaforth Hayes, Legendary Actress, Julie from “Days of Our Lives” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Susan Seaforth Hayes, is a highly popular and beloved actress who is, of course, best known for her longstanding portrayal of “Julie Williams” on the hugely successful daytime drama series, “Days of Our Lives”, for which she has received 6 Daytime Emmy Award nominations. In fact, she is the only actor to have appeared on the show for ALL SEVEN DECADES that it has been on the air. She is also well-known for her recurring role as “Joanna Manning” on “The Young and the Restless”, and as "District Attorney Patricia Steele" on “Sunset Beach”. In addition, our guest has appeared in dozens of other TV shows including “The Loretta Young Show”, “Hawaiian Eye”, “The Young Marrieds”, “The FBI”, “Dragnet”, “Ironside”, “Matlock” and many more. Our guest and her dear husband and co-star, the mega-talented and multi-award winning actor, the late, great Bill Hayes, whom we lost last January, were without question, television's greatest love story, appearing as Doug and Julie Williams on “Days of Our Lives” for over 50 years, which was definitely the longest running romance in television history. They became the very first – and still remain the only - soap opera actors in the world to appear on the cover of Time Magazine in its January 12, 1976 issue. And this superstar couple have written 2 best selling books – a novel entitled, “Trumpet”, and a memoir entitled, “Like Sands Through the Hourglass”, which is widely considered to be the best book ever written about daytime television. They also hosted the wonderful website, SOAP OPERA SECRETS DOT COM. And in 2018, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented our guest and her husband Bill Hayes with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. We're continuing to add to your beach read pile today with another fiction pick I couldn't get enough of: Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews, which is out May 7. Mary Kay is so talented at making the setting or the place of her books as a character in the novel, and she certainly does that in this latest book with “the Saint,” a landmark hotel on the coast of Georgia. Traditions run deep here, but scandals run even deeper. “The Saint” is shorthand for the St. Cecelia, and if you grew up coming to this hotel, you were referred to as “a Saint”; if you came from the wrong side of the river, you were “an Ain't.” In the book we meet Traci Eddings, who was one of those outsiders; her family wasn't rich or connected enough to vacation at the Saint. She did work at the Saint, however, for one summer, and she married the boss' son. In this book we find her the widowed owner of the hotel, attempting to get the Saint back to its glory days, even though she's got a mountain of opposition standing in her way. She's got one summer season to turn it around, but then, new information about a drowning that happened long ago at the hotel threatens to come to light, and then a tragic death of one of the Saint's own brings Traci to the brink of despair. It's a love story, it's a mystery, and it's definitely worth a place on your TBR pile. Mary Kay Andrews is such a talented writer—she's a New York Times bestseller and her hit books are too numerous to name, but I'll try: The Homewreckers, The Newcomer, Hello, Summer, Sunset Beach, The High Tide Club, The Beach House Cookbook, The Weekenders, Beach Town, Save the Date, Ladies' Night, Spring Fever, Summer Rental, The Fixer Upper, Deep Dish, Savannah Breeze, Hissy Fit, Little Bitty Lies, and Savannah Blues, and I know there are many others that I left out. She is actually a former journalist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and lives in Georgia; Mary Kay Andrews is actually a pen name she adopted in 2002—her real name is Kathy Hogan Trocheck—and (I find this so interesting!) her pen name is inspired by the names of her children, Mary Kathleen, so Mary K, and Andrew, so Andrews. I love details like that. I have lived in the South for 15 years this year, and I really resonate with Mary Kay Andrews' Southern-flavored stories, but they're relatable and totally compelling to anyone, anywhere, as her books at their heart deal with the human element. Summers at the Saint by Mary Kay Andrews

Injuries are mostly out of our control. But recovery offers many choices. Will we allow the scar tissue to stiffen or soften us? Stu Nettle is the editor of Swellnet, one of Australia's leading independent surf media and forecasting sites, where he has written about board design, surf industry happenings, surf science, and coastal geology since 2008. Stu is a lifelong surfer but late-comer to surf media. He “had many unrelated life chapters, business failures, social experiments, and surf adventures before he ever got a word published.” We first encountered Stu's work amongst the lively pages of Kurangabaa, an academic – leaning surf journal he helped to found and run in the early 2000s. It was a trove of thoughtful essays, along with poetry, fiction and interviews – and part of a larger, exciting, indepedent DIY surf culture of that time. We wanted to know: what kind of life has shaped the voice and perspective of one of Australia's most prolific surf journalists? Stu talks us through the Sunset Beach hold down that changed him, the value of knowing our history, gender politics at Swellnet and the the future(s) of surf media.…Listen with Lauren L. Hear about travel to Long Island, New York as the Amateur Traveler talks to Vanessa Gordon from EastEndTasteMagazine.com about her home. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-long-island-new-york/ Why should someone go to Long Island? Vanessa says, "Long Island, there truly is so to discover, even from living out here for many years, whether part-time or full-time there's truly so much to do, whether you're in Nassau or Suffolk County, the two counties that make up Long Island. I've lived here in the Hamptons, been here for over 30 years and this New York region never ceases to amaze me. There are ocean beaches. We have Bay beaches. We have beautiful nature preserves, bountiful farmers markets, and endless amounts of summer events." Vanessa suggests visiting Long Island in September or October, mentioning the abundance of events, family activities, and cultural events during these months. She shares her favorite spots in Montauk, including the Montauk Point Lighthouse and the opportunity for seal watching and whale sightings. Moving to Shelter Island, Vanessa recommends taking the ferry and exploring the island's unique attractions, such as Rams Head Inn and Mashomack Preserve. She also suggests Sunset Beach as a hotspot for live music and sunsets. Vanessa then talks about Sag Harbor, her favorite village, and its family-friendly beaches. She highlights The Beacon restaurant and Barron's Cove Hotel for breathtaking sunset views. The discussion extends to wineries on the North Fork, with recommendations like Wolfer Estate and Channing Daughters. She covers various family-friendly activities, including museums like the Parrish Art Museum and Guildhall and theaters such as Bay Street Theater. Vanessa mentions the presence of celebrities in the fall. The itinerary continues with a move to Riverhead, described as the gateway to the North Fork and South Fork. Vanessa appreciates the town's historic charm, new businesses, and attractions like the Long Island Aquarium. She highlights the East End food market as a one-stop shop for local food purveyors. Vanessa suggests considering staying in Brookhaven instead of the Hamptons to save on your travel budget. She highlights Patchogue on the Great South Bay as a vibrant spot, particularly for nightlife, and recommends Fire Island for its popularity among the LGBTQ+ community. She emphasizes historical sites like Fire Island Lighthouse and Bellport, suggesting the Bellport Inn as a cozy stay. Moving to the "Gold Coast" on the north shore, Vanessa mentions historic mansions like Teddy Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill, the Old Westbury Gardens, and Oheka Castle, the latter featured in a Taylor Swift music video. She advises dividing mansion visits over two days. Whether you are visiting Long Island on your yacht or by train, whether you are visiting mansions or living in one, this area near New York City offers a very different world to the city with its beaches, farms, and vineyards.
