Thomas Ruff talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work.Ruff was born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, in what was then West Germany, and has, over five decades, extensively probed the forms and possibilities of photography. Though he is a key figure in the international generation of artists that emerged in the 1980s and experimented with the very nature of the photographic medium and discipline, Ruff has carved out a singular practice. He works in distinct series whose formal characteristics vary enormously, but are underpinned by experimental unorthodoxy, technical curiosity and conceptual rigour. Each new group contributes to a profound philosophical exploration of the photographic image and what it means to make a picture. But while the intellectual underpinning of his work is unwavering, Thomas makes prints that are remarkably beautiful objects. Operating in a medium that remains associated with the factual record and documentary, he has relentlessly made the case for a photographic practice in which imagination is a primary agent. He discusses his interest in “the puzzle of photography”, the distinctive geneses of his various series of work, and his conviction that while seeking an “intellectually high-end product… of course I want to have fun”. He reflects on the early influence of the photographer Ernst Haas, how Piero della Francesca influenced his early Portraits series, how he chose to study art over astronomy, yet outer space has remained a core concern in his work, and how the satirical television show Spitting Image proved an unlikely influence. Of course, he reflects on the work of numerous photographers, from Eugène Atget and Walker Evans to Lou Landauer and his teachers in Düsseldorf, Bernd and Hilla Becher. Plus, he answers our usual questions, including the ultimate, “What is art for?”Thomas Ruff: expériences lumineuses, David Zwirner, London, until 22 March; his work features in Typologien, a survey of 20th-century German photography at Fondazione Prada, Milan, 3 April-14 July. We live in a gear-obsessed world as photographers, with new lenses and cameras being touted as the magic solutions to improve our photography. While gear does play a role in helping us get the photographs we envision, there's so much more that goes into making quality, personally-meaningful photographs that are uniquely ours. Today's guest on the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen Podcast, David duChemin, is a world & humanitarian assignment photographer, best-selling author, digital publisher, podcaster, and international workshop leader based in Vancouver Island, Canada. Photography is one of the most accessible artforms that exists and acts as a creative outlet and tool for personal expression for so many of us. Unfortunately, tapping into that creativity and modes of personal expression in photography doesn't always come naturally for all of us. Fortunately, there are techniques and strategies that exist to help us get there. On today's episode, I finally was able to speak with one of the most inspiring Canadian photographers of our time, Richard Martin. Richard is a creative powerhouse and I just love his approach to making images. Our conversation covers a huge plethora of topics revolving around his creative approaches for making images and there is a lot of actionable advice in today's episode, so I highly encourage you to listen all the way to the end. On this week's episode, we discuss: Richard's journey into photography. How growing up in the Thousand Island region near Lake Ontario informed Richard's interest in nature. How photography evolved into a vehicle for personal expression for Richard. Richard's philosophical approach to making images in the field. Keys to creative development in photography. Comparing our work to others. Balancing creative ruts with our creative and business needs. The importance of restoring our amateur status. Why we should question everything we know about photography. The role of ambiguity in photography. And a lot more! If you enjoyed our chat, we did a whole bonus episode on Patreon where Richard and I discuss perfectionism in landscape photography and how it relates to Wabi Sabi! Siegfried was born in Northern Germany and picked up a camera to become a street photographer 20 years ago after visiting a photo exhibition by André Kertész. He developed a unique photography style that leads to many publications and exhibitions of his work all over the world. He has solo published two books and has contributed to at least 13 more book publications. He is also a member of the prestigious In-Public (now called UP Photographers) street photography collective and some may have seen him appear in the Sky Arte TV Show “Master of Photography” in 2017. He is also one of the co-founders of the German Street Photography site and the German Street Photography Festival.   On this episode, Marco and Siegfried discuss how you can improve your street photography by working with a system and how going back to the same places over and over again increases your chances of getting a great shot. Siegfried established the catchy P.I.L.O.T. system to help you structure your street photography approach: P = Place I = Inspiration L = Layers O = Objects T = Theme   Inspirational photographer of the month: Siegfried picks Ernst Haas (born 1921 in Vienna, Austria - died 1986 in New York) an early adopter of Kodachrome color film at a time where most photographers were still using B&W film. His unique style of capturing graphic scenes and reflections in cities quickly attracted the attention of magazines and publishers. He was invited to join Magnum and even became Mangum's president in 1960. Ernst Haas photo books are very popular up to today and are often sold out. In September 2019 a new book of his will be published by Magnum and his estate. http://ernst-haas.com  Links to Siegfried Hansesn’s work and social media accounts: Website: https://siegfried-hansen.de  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/siegfried_hansen/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/siegfried1961  Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/streetphotography/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/siegfried.hansen.1    Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month:   Siegfried picks: “Ernst Haas: Color Correction”  Hardback, 232 pages, Published by: Steidl   Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2jNm98T  Publishers Website:https://steidl.de/Books/Color-Correction-0318264155.html   The book shows complex, clever and vibrant color images that were never exhibited during Haas’s lifetime.   Marco picks: “Hold the Line” by Siegfried Hansen   Link: https://www.verlag-kettler.de/programm/hold-line#/    Hold the Line is a beautiful and clever street photo book with a collection of lines, symmetry, and color in public space. It has 56 pages and was published by Kettler in May 2015. The book is sold out and now fetches quite high prices on the used photography book market. What is the photographers intention?

The Art of Photography

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2018

Intention is the point of all photography. How do you intend for your work to look? The intention of the photographer starts with the idea, concept and composition of the image and its carried all the way through to the final printed work. Photography today has changed in some ways because we tend to publish our work for screen-based devices, but the intention of the photographer - or your intent shouldn't be sacrificed. William Eggleston, Ernst Haas, Luigi Ghirri and Saul Leiter were all color photographers with different styles and different looks to their work. They represent the best photographers of their time. Yet they all shot on Kodachrome. So why does their work look vastly different from one another yet they were using the same film stock? The answer is in the intent. Each had a unique intention to how their work would look, what it would say and how it would communicate to the viewer. The answer is in the printing stage of photography. This is where decisions were made that created unique works. Posting daily on Instagram under his “Lonely.Streets” name, Jeffrey's graphic and thought provoking black and white images stand out among the flood of urban imagery uploaded to the social media site. Antonio was able to convince Jeff to put his camera down for a moment and join him in a pleasant conversation about what it's truly like to shoot on the lonely streets.   Links from show: Jeffrey Stone Jeff's Instagram page Andy Goldsworthy Saul Leiter Ernst Haas - color correction book Ernst Haas Color Correction Michael Kenna

Davin Lavikka - The Alternative Processes Davin is a Fine Art and Commercial Photographer based in Scottsdale Arizona. You may know Davin from his YouTube channel filled with instructional videos on all things photography. From understanding gear to learning on how to be better prepared on your next shoot. Davin Lavikka is a photographer and artist in Scottsdale Arizona. Photography is his primary tool and has been for the last fifteen years. He is known for his architectural and commercial work but has become known for his fine art photography first. He is influenced by early masters like Eugene Atget, W. Eugene Smith, Diane Arbus, Walker Evens, Ansel Adams, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Horst P. Horst, Ernst Haas, Herbert Bayer, Jacques Henri Lartigue and Edward Weston. From the very beginning Davin has been a visionary translating his ideas into a physical form through drawing, painting, illustrating and photography. Davin's ultimate goal is to fully explore the artistic side of photography through alternative processes and ideas. He is fascinated with visual composition and how we react to it. "You can look at a master painter's work like Marcus Pierson, Philip Curtis or Van Gogh, see a painting they did and automatically know it was them. It's harder to do that with photography but that's the goal, to see identify me without knowing the work." Happy Shooting!
