Met in aflevering 4: The Last of Us. --- Wil je een object aandragen voor een Herwaarns Verwikkeld? Neem contact op. Bronnen The Last of Us. It's time to get cool again and talk about one of those college dorm classics: GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. There are a lot of folks out there who hold this game firmly in their nostalgia, and today we're here to tell them to let it go. This one can die and be a historical event. We also bring back crowd favorite as well as introduce highly anticipated guest: Matt's cousin Kimmy. Listen, we wanted to play 4 player GoldenEye, and this was our crew, and each of our voices deserves to be heard! Join us for a discussion of The Beginner's Guide. This game is so complicated and so deep and so oddly emotional - whether funny or brutally devastating is really up to you, apparently - that we bring in a psychiatrist to help us sift through the experience. I'm having a hard time deciding exactly what to type here about this game; it's almost a divine experience certainly without parallel in the gaming space, an opinion I hold to the level of that for Kentucky Route Zero. The Beginner's Guide is not as much all about videogames as The Stanley Parable, but instead it's a game all about the making of games, the sustaining of the creative forces required to make such inhumanly exhausting projects that are such pieces of the creators' soul(s). I don't want to spoil this experience for any of you (spoiling is what listening to our podcast is for, after all), but take it from me: this is a game you should play if you've ever even considered the humans behind your games. We recommend listening to our The Stanley Parable podcast beforehand, the spiritual precursor to this game, also by Davey Wreden.Relevant links!Check out our own musician Pauly, whose song Unravishing is featured in this episode!Galactic Cafe: Davey Wreden's blog post about The Stanley ParableThe Artist is Absent: Davey Wreden and The Beginner's Guide - a truly amazing analysis video of The Beginner's Guide by Innuendo Studios on YouTube (33m)Errant Signal: The Beginner's Guide - another awesome breakdown analysis from the YouTube channel Errant Signal (20m) - watch this if you suspect Coda might be a real personThe theme this week is "The Func" by VCMG, a free download from chipmusic.org.The Will's Quiz Minute(tm) theme is Linker, also by beloved Pauly!

Welcome to another interview on the Critical Distance Confab! This month our guest is Chris Franklin, aka Campster, talking about his YouTube series Errant Signal. Over time, he has innovated on an established YouTube format to evolve his own personal style, featuring holistic close readings on games as well as video essays on theoretical concepts. He has also experimented with short form, quick-turnaround content, and he reveals what this experience taught him about criticism and video creation. During our interview, we talk about his process, the technical challenges he faces in creating a video essay, as well as the "logjam" created by trying to reconcile different facets of his personal approach to criticism. We dig into what the Amazon Prime video game discount means for other retailers, check back in on World of Warships, and then deep dive on Oxenfree, the adventure story game from Night School Studio. Later in the show, we mention this video from Errant Signal, in which Christopher Franklin realizes a particular game is an affront to everything he does. The Mappers celebrate the heat of summer with hot jams, hotter skating, and the blazing addition of a third host! The three of them get down to business with a long talk about the sun-drenched streets of sizzling pavement and blasting AC, cars in traffic and the endless parade of city construction. It’s open season on open worlds, a question of what open worlds mean for the formal structure of video games and level design. Then, we skitch behind a stunt car and grind our way through through the … well, the grind of the eighth endeavor of Mr. Anthony “Tony Hawk” Hawke, Esq., also known as Project 8. Friendships are tested, hands are contorted, and we come through the other side with a rousing defensive of youth and play by one of our number, who can never not ollie. He said see you later boy. He wasn’t good enough for us. But he deigns to take us on this Junetime adventure, as we grumble our way through this expansive romp. You can get our podcast on iTunes, on Stitcher, or you can download it directly by clicking here.NOTE: Jackson and Matthew clarified some of the points in this podcast in addendum article, which you can read here. This Month’s Game Club: Tony Hawk’s Project 8Next Month: Final Fantasy VIII: Part 2Games Discussed: A New Host Appears, VaniaMania Returns with Castlevania 2, Jackson’s PS4 Adventure, Grand Theft Auto 4, Skyrim, Assassin’s Creed 2, World of Warcraft, Sleeping Dogs, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Red Dead Redemption, Yakuza 3, Saints Row the Third, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Burnout Paradise, Spider-Man 2, Batman: Arkhams Asylum and City, Tony Hawk’s Project 8, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, this Errant Signal video, skate 2, Crazy Taxi, Goldeneye.Music This EpisodeBlown Away by Kevin MacLeodPunk Rock Girl by The Dead MilkmenIf You Must by Del The Funky HomosapienAll My Best Friends Are Metalheads by Less Than JakeSuperman by Goldfinger
