The realm of software development is as vast as it is intricate. For Cory O'Daniel, it's been a journey marked by coding and understanding the deeper nuances of being a software developer. Cory took a detour, discovering that there's more to the world of tech than just writing code – there's a profound beauty in problem-solving, connecting with peers, and carving out personal space in a rapidly evolving remote work landscape.Cory placed the start of his journey in high school, modding Duke Nukem 3D. He then described how working a data-entry job in a hospital to make ends meet got him to automate his work through coding. He talked about his college physics major and the dire future it promised and how he chose to major in Networking and Computer Science instead. We then went from one job to the next. Ditching the first job requiring a suit and tie (but where he was caught reading the D&D reference manuals during his work) for Californian startups where he could wear shorts & teeshirts. We talked about the colorful startups he experienced and the crazy technical contraptions some of those required. We talked about becoming a Digital Nomad before iPhones were a thing. And finally, we touched on Massdriver, Cory's current company. In this episode, Cory O'Daniel invites us into his world, sharing his unique transition from hands-on coding to leadership and his candid thoughts on the art of balancing remote work. He touches upon the necessity of asynchronous communication, the serenity in pacing during calls, and the sometimes underrated joy of turning off video feeds. Through his journey, we see a reflection of modern-day work challenges and how passion, adaptability, and a dash of humor can make all the difference. If you want to learn more about the intricacies of remote work and derive inspiration from Cory's remarkable journey, this episode is a must-listen!Three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:Discover Cory's Unique Journey: Understand Cory's non-traditional path into software development, offering inspiration for those overwhelmed by the learning curve.Insights on Remote Work: With remote work becoming the norm, Cory's pioneering experience offers invaluable advice on effective communication, multitasking, and cultivating team camaraderie.Evolution in Tech Career: Dive deep into Cory's transition from hands-on coding to leadership roles, emphasizing the significance of soft skills, continuous learning, and adaptability in the tech world.Support the show

Duke Nukem 3D took the world by storm in 1996, pushing first-person shooter video games to a new frontier. I know some of you want more PC love on the podcast. The problem is, I haven't played anything PC. I think we've literally covered every PC game I've played in my life on the show already. So if I play something new, bet your ass it's gonna get an episode of RTG. And our Patreons decided I should play Half Life last month, so here we are. I didn't love playing with mouse & keyboard (in fact, I fucking hated it), but I sure liked this game. Even 20+ years later its release, I can see what a monumental, influential game this is. I really feel like it's one of those games every gamer should experience, and I'm glad I finally have. (The last 25% of the game sucks, though.) My buddy Tyler is back this week, and we spent over an hour talking about Valve's game debut, and one of the most important first-person shooters ever made. Half Life is pretty dope, and it was worth going against my anti-PC heritage to experience. And before we swing crowbars, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, we talk about cloud gaming, and what role it could play in gaming in the future. Someone asks me to break down the new PS Plus tiers. And what does a game have to do to get me to buy it on multiple platforms? Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of the greatest retro PC shooters ever: Duke Nukem 3D, DOOM, and Wolfenstein 3D. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! A few weeks ago Woody began reminiscing about old computer games he played in middle school and high school. In the 90's computer games evolved from the more simplistic (like Oregon Trail) to the more complex (such as Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D, and DOOM). Even though games had taken a more three dimensional game play - the rise of the "point and click" format took a strong hold. Like most trips down "memory lane" Woody re-discovered a "point and click" game he hadn't thought about since the late nights he spent playing it at his high school buddy's house back in 1996. He remembered it being very creepy, very weird, and super intriguing. It wasn't until he began to dig a little into the game itself that he realized the true story behind the game, and most importantly the game's creator was far more captivating than he had ever known. Join us this week as we discuss DROWNED GOD: CONSPIRACY OF THE AGES. This game covers it all...ancient aliens, conspiracy, the Great Flood, the Library of Alexandria, the Knights Templar, the Philadelphia Experiment and the link to other dimensions...plus, the truth about Human History. Plus there's reviews of Hi-Octane (Saturn) and Criticom (PSX), and details about that competition.Get next week's episode early on Patreon!Join the GamesMaster conversation on Discord!Theme song by Other ChrisFollow Luke on TwitterFollow Ash on TwitterFollow Under Consoletation on TwitterFollow Under Consoletation on InstagramSend your thoughts to feedback@underconsoletation.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/underconsolepod. Lee talks about writing music for Duke Nukem 3D and other Duke projects, as well as how quickly he wrote music for Rise of the Triad, and how he made sounds for Balls of Steel (all games from Apogee Software / 3D Realms).
"Come get some!" It's Jon's turn to pitch to Liam, and you know how Jon gets when he's 'into' something... his recent addiction to revolutionary 90s first person shooter Quake has led him to rediscover genre granddaddy Doom, as well as the host of other 'retro FPS' games now available as other 90s gamers get their nostalgic kicks (and shotgun blasts, and rocket-propelled grenade explosions)! But will these venerable games and their disturbing imagery still hold up well enough to earn a place in the Hall Of Pain, or are they doomed to rot in Hell...?

Rob and Dave look back at the entire Duke Nukem series while looking back on the week in which Duke Nukem 3D was unveiled to the world. Dave schools Rob on the history of Duke Nukem, as we all learn about the notable persons involved with the series, and talk at length about the sordid development history of Duke Nukem Forever. They debate the merits of a few favorable reviews on the game before delving into a conversation about whether or not a Duke Nukem game could be successful within today's "cancel culture," landscape. Finally, with the gaming question of the week, the boys are pitted against the prospect of having to live out the rest of their years in the world of the last video game they've played. Find out who's screwed, and who's living a life of luxuty in today's trip down Memory Card Lane. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
