A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the song Love My Way (and The Psychedelic Furs) in (just under) fifteen minutes. The Psychedelic Furs formed in London in 1977. Led by vocalist Richard Butler and his brother Tim on bass, they are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. The band had several hits in their early career. Pretty in Pink was originally released in 1981 as a single from their second album, Talk Talk Talk. John Hughes' 1986 film was named after the song and a re-recorded version of the song was included on its soundtrack.Love My Way was released in 1982 as the first single from their third album Forever Now. Written by the group and produced by Todd Rundgren, who also played marimba, the song featured backing vocals from Flo & Eddie (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of The Turtles). Although it scraped into the top 50 in the UK Singles Chart, Love My Way was featured in the 1983 film Valley Girl.It also appears on the soundtracks of the 1998 film The Wedding Singer and the 2006 film Starter for 10. After it was heard in the 2017 film Call Me by Your Name, the song enjoyed a surge in streaming popularity. It was also featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and please do leave feedback if you like what you you have heard.Mathew Woodall

Man Parrish in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.manparrish.com Parrish's early live shows at Bronx hip-hop clubs were spectacles of lights, glitter, and pyrotechnics, which drew as much from the Warhol mystique as the Cold Crush Brothers. His first release was "Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop)" issued in 1982, which Parrish said faced a racial backlash from the African-American hip hop community: "I was making the music that they played, and then they found out I was white and gay they pulled it. It didn't hurt sales but it was shocking." The song was featured in the film Shaun of the Dead, the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City which sold millions of copies. It was sampled in Sway & King Tech's 1991 song "Follow 4 Now", from their second album, Concrete Jungle. His biggest chart success in the UK was his recording of "Male Stripper" with Man 2 Man, which peaked at No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart

There are many moments that defined the 1980's; Ernest starring in his own movie, Alf crashing on earth, Bob Dyan singing "We Are the World" just to name a few. But it was the debut of a tv show that changed everything forever. Cool had a new name and it was MIAMI VICE. Even video games copied the vibe of the police drama, most famously Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. But that is just the tip of the retro-inspired iceberg. On today's episode we look at numerous games that involve fast cars, white blazers and a ton of Synthwave. It may be 2024, but we're gonna party like it's 1984!
Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Kayt Ahnberg , and Ryan Weaver. We wrap up our four-part series on Manhunt, Rockstar North's snuff film inspired follow up to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. As we close the book on Manhunt, we try to figure out what might have inspired people to think Manhunt caused a real-world murder in 2004 and how it (possibly) had more to do with the machinations of an old friend of the pod than Manhunt acting as a "murder simulator." We then go into the game's popular reception and how Manhunt as a game may be even more relevant today.Topics discussed include: The machinations of a mature legal mind, thoughts on Manhunt from the self-proclaimed "killologist," and whether Manhunt was a harbinger of the current woes of the game industry.Theme Music: Occam's Sikhwee by Sikh Knowledge (Free Music Archive: https://bit.ly/33G4sLO), used under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US (https://bit.ly/33JXogQ) More info, including show notes and sources at http://scandalousgamespodcast.wordpress.com.

Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Kate Lynch, Phil Thomas, and Andy Hunter. This month, we finally keep our promise and take a break from Dave Grossman for a four-part series on Manhunt, Rockstar North's 2003 snuff film inspired follow up to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Today, we go into the game's inspirations and its early reception in the gaming press to set up the brouhaha that ensued following its release.Topics discussed include: a (very) brief history of snuff films, whether Manhunt almost caused a mutiny at Rockstar, the Sadism Spectrum (TM), and the environmentally friendly uses of canvas bags for suffocations. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
The early 2000s, spanning from 2000 to 2003, were a whirlwind of change and innovation for the video game industry. In 2000, a culmination of creativity met technology, with Sony's PlayStation taking center stage and the indie scene gaining prominence. Video games started gaining a foothold as a recognized art form, while Sega gracefully exited the console market to make way for new players. 2001 saw a surge in console wars with the debut of the GameCube and Xbox, while storytelling in games reached cinematic proportions. By 2002, the allure of sequels reigned supreme, with franchises opting for familiarity, and the end of an era for Rare as Microsoft acquired it. The year 2003 then marked significant mergers, with giants like Square and Enix joining forces and Valve launching Steam. Video games officially became a mainstream industry, drawing in significant investments and changing the face of game development. As the lines between art, entertainment, and business blurred, the early 2000s set the stage for the future of gaming.Featured Games:The Sims, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Thief II: The Metal Age, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, Oni, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Onimusha: Warlords, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Freedom Fighters, and Viewtiful Joe. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 6 (00:06) - 2000 (21:54) - 2001 (46:35) - 2002 (59:37) - 2003 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City uses the DNA of Miami Vice to offer a complex satire of American society and culture within the gameplay, one of several games that took cues from the show, including the officially licensed (but inferior) Miami Vice for the PS2 in 2004. We discuss two episodes from season one of the series that feel like Vice City game missions, and explore the clear influence Miami Vice had on Asian pop culture, in particular the films of John Woo during his hot streak in Hong Kong through the 80s; the signs of Vice are everywhere, especially in A Better Tomorrow II (1987), disowned by the director after studio interference, but like The Prodigal Son, it was also partly filmed on location in New York City and it climaxes in a Bushido-esque orgy of heroic bloodshed and Dudes Rock energy. Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Discord server, Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.We hope that you've had your recommended daily amount of pastel colours, spandex, and cocaine as we dove deep into the only game which has ever gone full-80s: Grand Theft Audio Vice City. Chief joined us for a long talk about our collective memories of this amazing title, what the heck Rockstar were thinking when they released Table Tennis, and just how 80's we all are. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningWe're discussing the 80s spoof-a-thon, and Scarface rip-off pastiche Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in this episode. As such we talk about a lot of rather NSFW topics. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesThis episode saw the Wafflers tackle the fantastically stupid GTA: Vice City - one of the first 3D, open world, crime-a-thons from acclaimed developers Rockstar. It wasn't the first, but was a lot of people's firsts - the earlier title GTA 3 was the first from Rockstar, and it set the stage for later titles in the series, and competitor titles like Saints Row.Anyway, Jay and Squidge were joined by Chief in this episode - and it was recorded on the same day as his previous appearance on the show: Spirits Within; Plot Without. Chief wanted to start the conversation by bringing up "Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis" (aka "Table Tennis"):It was bonkers, completely out of left-field.- ChiefAnd he's not wrong, because there wasn't even a table tennis competition or global event happening at the time. They just released it, seemingly randomly. And the big topic of the day that we recorded - back in September of 2022 - was that someone had hacked into Rockstar's systems and leaked a bunch of early GTA 6 stuff.this is Jay: please don't do this. Us developers don't want our early builds of stuff to see the light of day otherwise, we'd release them. Please remember to be nice to people, especially developers. But before they could do that, the system that they use to record episodes completely crapped outJay: and it was after that day that we started using our Discord server to record episodesGrand Theft Auto Vice CityWe all need to put on our pastel coloured suits, [and] get a pile of cardboard boxes and prepare to drive into them. Because we are going to be talking about Scarface meets Miami Vice - or as we all know it Grand Theft Auto Vice City- JayBut they couldn't seem to get away from just how bonkers it was for Rockstar to have released a Table Tennis game, randomly between several entries in all of their extremely violent, very silly, crime-a-thons. It would be as bonkers as if:Nintendo releases Diddy Kong Does The Accounts- SquidgeThis brought us to the topics of Nintendogs, societal pressure from parents in Japan, and what some young, Japanese couples get up to during bank holidays - or BONK holidays. Amiright?I mean, that hasn't helped at all. What Miyamoto has done is he's clocked into other people's misery, and sold them a copy of Nintendogs. Which hasn't helped the problem, and has just made it worse, AND he's charged them £45 for it.- ChiefAttempt Number 2Since there are a lot of people who have neither played Grand Theft Auto, nor GTA Vice City specifically, Jay wanted to challenge both Squidge and Chief to come up with a 30 second long (or less) elevator pitch for Vice City. Squidge went first:Do you wanna play a game where you can race around, jump over things, shoot people, and apparently there's a story that's set in the '80s?You need to play the story, you can just drive around, running people over and shooting things.- SquidgeThen Chief came in with:Don't bother, just play Table Tennis. It's reliving the '80s, isn't it? Great soundtrack. You drive around in '80s, like, Miami and Florida. It's fun, yeah. And you drive around and it's cool. '80s soundtrack. It's a lot of fun. There's a good story there as well, despite what Squidge said. I mean, it's just nicked off Scarface like, but yeah. A lot of fun. A lot of fun.'80s!- ChiefBut who won the elevator pitch battle? You decide! Let us both know either on Twitter or on our Discord server. And afterwards, Squidge was able to reduce his elevator pitch down to:Vice City is a soundtrack with a game built around it.- SquidgeAnd finally, Jay had a shot at it (but without the timer):So GTA Vice City. It's a game set in 1986. You play as Tommy Vercetti, who is essentially Scarface, and you're running through a whole series of situations that are very similar to episodes of Miami Vice. And it has an absolute BANGER of a soundtrack - I hate to have said that word after all of that; I'm getting the finger from Chief, but not the naughty one, the other one: the naughty finger.- JayAnd it's a real shame that they had to drop most of the licensed songs in the soundtrack for the "remasters" - the less said about them, the better - due to the rights being way more expensive now.Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, and some links to related things.Have you listened to the Tokyo Game Life podcast? WELL, the modern remakes of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas may not be getting the most favourable reviews, so we wanted to find out whether going back and playing the original Grand Theft Auto III on the Playstation 2 would be a better option. Our look back at Grand Theft Auto Vice City (in an episode from 2019) wasn't as favourable as we'd hoped, but will the FIRST 3D Grand Theft Auto game hold enough nostalgia to warrant a replay? Before stepping back into Liberty City Mikey updates us on his Deathloop progress, and our lovable hosts make a pledge to get rid of Overwatch. Plus, do you know why Grand Theft Auto 3 was originally delayed when it first came out? The Story Mode crew is together again! Yes, Red has finally returned from his five-week absence that literally turned into a matter of life or death. But now that he's back, he can help us discuss the lawsuits targeted at both Sony and Valve alleging the companies hold monopolies over their respective digital domains. First, however, we've got game announcements (like the thrilling news that Zombies Ate My Neighbors is coming to Nintendo Switch, as is Calculator, a $10 "game" that does exactly what it says). Next up is the news. This week, we're talking about Sony's admission that the company might have to redesign the PS5 in order to meet demand, how Chris Meledandri--the founder and CEO of animation movie studio Illumination-- will be joining Nintendo as an outside director, and Burger King's new move to draw in kids with a bland AR game. Finally, we look at Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the 18th anniversary of the game's PC release.Buzzsprout Affiliate Link (https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=825751)Hosts: @thewellredmage, @retrogamebrews, @wrytersviewMusic: "Gumption" by Russell Gordon at https://soundcloud.com/shredrussell-1Editing: @wrytersviewLogo: @thewellredmageSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/storymode)
The ’80s seemed to have been one of the most popular decades in pop culture history, as its influences, music, books, video games, and movies seem to continue to inspire stories today. Even if you didn’t live thru it, you have experienced it thru John Hues or Steven Spielberg films, or more recently, thru video games like Grand Theft Auto Vice City. The movie that our conversation covers today came out in the twenty-teens, but it is a love letter to all things ‘80s, and we bast in all of its nostalgic glory. Ready Player One is rated PG-13 and was released March 29, 2018. The film stars Tye Sheridan as Perzival / Wade, Olivia Cooke as Art3mis / Samantha, Ben Mandelsohn as Sorrento, Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow and Mark Rylance as Anorak / Halliday. Samuel Roberts stands accused of crimes against good taste – will the honorable judge Matthew Castle find him innocent or guilty, based on 18 dodgy eBay games purchases made over the past 12 months? We also talk about the idea of collecting games generally in this episode, and reveal how big our Steam libraries are. This week's music is from the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City soundtrack by Lex Horton and the Phoenix Wright trilogy soundtrack by Masakazu Sugimori and Akemi Kimura.
In this week's episode we discuss the recent achievements in the "porting old console games to handheld systems" scene, specifically the Super Mario 64 port for the DSi by GBAtemp user Hydr8gen, as well as the recent Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas ports to the PlayStation Vita. We also give our opinions on the new Mortal Kombat trailer, the recently announced DotA anime by Netflix, and whether or not something could be considered as anime if it wasn't made in Japan. Last but not least, we react to the biggest announcements made in Nintendo's recent 50-minute direct.
Another episode full of games! This time around it seems the Bloodborne 60 FPS patch Lance McDonald has shown for a while now has finally been released for users to patch themselves. MemCard PRO was announced, without a doubt being the most powerful PS1 memory card anyone could imagine. We also look at the re3 project yet again because as of a few days ago, both Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City have been fully reverse engineered! Might as well go over some game ports as well, including Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the PS Vita and Super Mario 64 on the DSi!
2020 was an insane year, featuring and amongst a global pandemic and politics breaching our comfort zones, we chose the theme “the best games of all time”, from great legacy’s such as Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, to the 2020 Game of the Year The Last of Us Part II. Chrono Trigger, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy VII Remake, The Witcher III Wild Hunt, Batman Arkham Asylum, Bioshock, Dragon Age: Origins, Crash Bandicoot 3, and Phasmophobia-- takes a deep breath are finally capped off with a game that ascends gamedom, the vehicle, or concept, the king of table top roleplaying games, the patriarch of pen and paper, Dungeons and Dragons, 5th Edition, is our game for December 2020. We go into depth regarding D&D Beyond, the nuances of the classes and races of Faerun and the Sword Coast, and we even have an excellent supplementary episode, like Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything to the Player’s Handbook, we have a sister episode; The Night of Wintermas, so make sure you’ve subscribed and listened to that episode as well. While it’s hard to discuss such a large game like this, we pretty much nail it and the nuances that come into play regarding Dungeons and Dragons and the modern services it comes with. Today on Never Was A Gamer, we've played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and we really aren't sure how to feel about it. This is a weird episode - it's the first time Michelle has come away from one of these games lukewarm and conflicted. Picking that apart lead us down an interesting road of examining what we need from emergent gameplay, how legible a satire or pastiche this is, and the importance of vibes (both the game's and our own). We now live in a world where our weeaboo compatriots have thrown themselves at the gates of Area 51, attempting to uncover the facility’s vast secrets. Meanwhile, we find ourselves in our own government black site as we hunker back down with Control, experiment with the launch lineup of Apple Arcade, and witness the ghostly return of Telltale Games. Games include Control, Divinity: Original Sin II, GreedFall, Sayonara Wild Hearts, What the Golf?, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Got a question for the show? One of the unfortunate aspects of talking about a game like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is that even though so much of the experience is tied to its soundtrack, for legal reasons we cannot really play those songs on the episodes, or else we risk being struck with a copyright strike. But you know what? This is Region Free Radio, and in true pirate style, we are putting this episode, just focusing on Vice City's music. Hosted by Ozzy, we go through the various radio stations and pick two songs that are most representative of the station's character and mood. These are definitely all fantastic and eclectic tracks, and at the very least, it will give you some solid jams for an hour. We do not know how long this episode will last, as it will very likely be struck down, so make sure to give it a listen before it does. As a disclaimer, all songs are the rights of the property holders and we make no money at all from this. We just hope everyone enjoys. Cheers!
You can find out more about **Sleep Awareness Week **here. The "ChronoCity" mentioned in the episode is a town called Bad Kissingen, Germany. You can read more about the concept in a Guardian long read article, here. The book mentioned a couple of times during the episode is "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker. The **Derren Brown **documentary referenced — which is well worth a watch — is called "Sacrifice" and you can find it on Netflix. The Arianna Huffington Ted Talk referenced about the importance of sleep is called "How To Succeed? Get More Sleep" and you can watch it here. During the episode, I meant to say "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs" but for some reason, said "Lazlow" — who was, in fact, a fictional DJ on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Easy mistake to make, I think you'll all agree. Rhys X
Does anyone else hear the chorus to I Ran (So Far Away) and instantly think of Vice City? Oh, all of you? At least it isn't just me then.... Everyone played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I know there had been the original top-down style GTA games, and GTA 3 had been out for a little while, but this seemed like the one that really kick-started the Grand Theft Auto phenomenon. I know personally, this one the first one I played. I never actually finished the story, but I'd spend hours just driving around causing chaos and running away from the police. I'd never played a game like this before, it felt so....real (for lack of a better word). The soundtrack for this game is absolutely iconic. Just driving around listening to the radio was so much fun. The amount of time Rockstar spent on the radio DJ's conversations was incredible for the time. As someone that would usually turn the sound off on my video games and listen to a CD instead (fuck I'm old), this game really grabbed my attention from an audio perspective. It was so good. I'm sure kids that grew up on GTA V would take one look at Vice City and laugh, but for us old folks, this game was the cat's ass. I've been looking forward to uploading this episode for a while, because I know every gamer from my generation remembers ripping around, seeing if they could max out their stars and still get away from the cops. This game was like playing a movie. It's unquestionably one of the most iconic games of it's generation, and I had a great time chatting about it with my buddy Andre. I hope you guys have as much fun with this episode as we did. Find us on Twitter and Instagram - @memberthegame And check out our website! https://www.rememberthegamepodcast.com

Welcome back, lickers! On today's episode I'm joined by my good friend Brad VandenBerg. I've mentioned him on the show before and he created the Jam Sandwich logo, so know that it looks good because of this sweet man. On today's show, we dig into the soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City because it's probably the best video game soundtrack ever. We barely scratch the surface, but then again it would be an 8 hour long episode if we crammed it all in. I mostly grill Brad about being a gamer because it's a world that intrigues and fascinates me. Throughout the episode we talk about some of our favorite video games, living off pizza & beer and coin the term "big tinies." If that doesn't work for you then I suggest you take it out and blow on it. FUN FACT: I was having tech issues for a solid hour before I was able to start recording, so I power smoked a bowl right before to chill out and ended up starting the whole thing off by saying "Did you miss me next show?" Sweet Jesus, this show will never not be amateur hour. Jam Sandwiches can also be found at: manontop69.com || Twitter: @jamsandwichpod || Instagram: @jamsandwichpodcast

The Mappers celebrate the heat of summer with hot jams, hotter skating, and the blazing addition of a third host! The three of them get down to business with a long talk about the sun-drenched streets of sizzling pavement and blasting AC, cars in traffic and the endless parade of city construction. It’s open season on open worlds, a question of what open worlds mean for the formal structure of video games and level design. Then, we skitch behind a stunt car and grind our way through through the … well, the grind of the eighth endeavor of Mr. Anthony “Tony Hawk” Hawke, Esq., also known as Project 8. Friendships are tested, hands are contorted, and we come through the other side with a rousing defensive of youth and play by one of our number, who can never not ollie. He said see you later boy.
