Writer Gary Graff returns to discuss the release of the 501 Essential Albums of the 80s. When he was on a few months ago to discuss the 90s version, we explored the process for creating the list, who contributed, and how they decided what made it and what didn't. This time we go straight to the fun stuff - what was missing! It makes for a friendly, but impassioned debate, which is exactly the point of books like this. This week, host Jason Jefferies is joined by Gary Graff, editor of 501 Essential Albums of the 80s: The Music Fan's Definitive Guide, which is published by our friends at Quarto Publishing Group. Topics of discussion include Alice Cooper, lists, what people think of when they think of the 1980s (hair), Walkmans and boomboxes, CDs and cassettes, MTV, and much more. Copies of 501 Essential Albums of the 80s: The Music Fan's Definitive Guide can be ordered from your favorite local, independent bookstore. Happy reading!
Gary Graff has done it again. With a cadre of writers, Gary pulled together a list of 501 albums that he feels are the most indicative of the 1980s. (We talked with Gary before about his list of albums of the 90s.) And, while we don't get as heated as we did then, there is still some lively debate to go around- and that's the point.501 Essential Albums of the '80s: The Music Fan's Definitive Guide is available right now wherever you get your books.
Comedian Brian Blackmore was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning, handling the Top 10 1980's fashion trends. (0:00) AJ is back in the studio! After a few days off for treatment, AJ explained why the doctors consider him to be a medical marvel, and how easy it is to lose your car in a parking garage. (15:28) The Tribe was calling in to share their stories of being attacked by bees, which included some hilarious recreation commentary from AJ. (23:51) It took no time at all for Chaz and Gary Graff to start arguing over the essential albums of the 1980's. Gary wrote the book on the 501 most essential albums, and the only thing he and Chaz agreed on is the exclusion of Don Johnson's "Heartbeat." (32:01)

This was an album about growing up, about moving away, about changing from a girl into a woman, about navigating the world while being unsure of how (or even if) you fit into it. It was also an album that shook the foundations of pop so much that it launched the careers of dozens of other girls after it, that pissed men off, that confused critics, and that changed the way I would look at music for the rest of my life. It's an album that will forever be an iconic piece of my history, whether it also happened to teach me internalized misogyny or not. The show that talks about stuff on purpose is back with our premiere episode of season four! Can you believe TRAPPO's fourth season is here? We can't! Anyhow, if it's our season premiere, then that must mean it's time for our latest Essential Albums episode. What is that, you may be asking? It's a simple enough premise. The two hosts of TRAPPO each choose a handful of albums (new, old, whatever) that they consider "essential", and those albums are inducted into the TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on. What it the TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on, you may be asking? That's the giant cannon we're constructing at an undisclosed location in the high desert, which we will one day load with all the coolest pop culture ephemera this rotten world has to offer, then we'll blast it into outer space for enlightened extraterrestrials to enjoy. So pretty standard stuff, really. What essential albums have we chosen for induction this year? You'll have to listen to find out. That's the deal, kids. Would you like to share some of your essential albums with us? It's easy to do! Just follow THIS LINK to the official TRAPPO blog and leave a comment. Tell us what's on your mind. Welcome Friends and thank you for connecting with us for another wonderful episode of CWC! Today, Donna had the chance to talk with Posey Hill. Three-time Arkansas Country Music Awards Nominee (2018, 2022, 2024), Posey Hill is a regional touring Alt-country/Americana group from Central Arkansas. Doug Burnett grew up in Arkansas in the late 70's-80's, playing in bands that covered rock, top 40, country and bluegrass before becoming a dad to Kristian, Erin and Megan. The girls grew up listening to him write music on his old '54 Gibson so it was only a natural progression that they would follow suit. Starting out as a bluegrass band, Posey Hill has played places like Silver Dollar City in Missouri, Rockygrass in Colorado, Leander Bluegrass Festival in Texas and countless venues around Arkansas. Exploring their original music led them to a broader scope of sound, pulling from the rock, country and blues Doug raised the girls on. A valuable part of their musical upbringing was their exposure to some of the best female singer/songwriter influences: Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and more. They are currently inspired by Americana/Alt-country/Red Dirt acts such as Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours, The High Women, Red Clay Strays and more. In 2021, the group went to The Doghouse Studios in Nashville, TN to begin recording their first all-original album. Released in August 2023, No Clear Place to Fall received global recognition from important critics such as UK's Alan Cackett and Saving Country Music's Trigger; making SCM's Essential Albums of 2023 list. Their singles “Keeping Tyler”, “I'm Too Old for This” and “Send Him My Love” have received airplay all around Arkansas and various national internet radio stations and streaming playlists. Their live shows mix a variety of originals, old country, 70's rock, folk, Bluegrass and R&B; appealing to a wide audience For more on Posey Hill check out https://poseyhillmusic.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crazywomencountry/support

The Vinyl Ventures crew wraps up their Essential Album shows with the 10th installment. What started as a discussion list in the summer of 2021 has become some of the most popular shows on Vinyl Ventures. 100 albums each seems easy when you have a a few thousand in the collection. But in practice with each show it gets a little more challenging as some artists and bands get left off the list. Legendary NWOBHM disc-jockey Neal Kay, who was an important factor in the rise of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM), along with Tommy Vance, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, joins us on The Loaded Radio Podcast Between 1975 and 1980, Neal managed the rock club known as "The Bandwagon Heavy Metal Soundhouse", which catered to the burgeoning genre that we know today as heavy metal. With help from the music papers of the day, "Sounds" and "Melody Maker", Neal established the venue as the location for new upcoming bands and like minded fans of the heavy metal genre. Band demo tapes started to arrive in droves after a two-page article in "Sounds", penned by journalist Geoff Barton. Kay had one of the biggest club sound systems ever seen at the time, being an 8000 watt PA, comprising mainly JBL/Martin speakers and coach built JPS associates amps. The PA was so loud that the mixing desk was "flown" on chains, suspended from the roof to help avoid feedback from the record decks. Kay would often be found at massive heavy metal gigs at venues like the Rainbow Theatre and Hammersmith Odeon, and would eventually hit the road with such iconic acts as BLACK SABBATH, RUSH, AC/DC, JUDAS PRIEST and countless others. Neal was he first high level touring rock DJ of his time. Kay would also assist in arranging and producing demos of new heavy metal bands, recorded at Spaceward Studios in Cambridge. Amongst these acts were SAXON, PRAYING MANTIS and IRON MAIDEN. He championed these and other acts, and went on to tour with those bands on full UK treks. The resulting popularity of IRON MAIDEN's recording led to a record contract for them with EMI. Several other NWOBHM bands also got contracts due to their Soundhouse demos. Kay worked with EMI Records compiling many of these demos onto an album called "Metal for Muthas", of which several volumes were released. In 1980, he was the MC for the very first Monsters of Rock Festival, at Castle Donnington, headlined by RAINBOW, SCORPIONS and JUDAS PRIEST. Kay was also a band manager in the 1980s and early 1990s. During that same period, Neal also managed a large studio complex in South London called Samurai Studios, where he also learned the art of live sound engineering. Neal, who is retired now, talks with us about the beginnings of heavy metal, his absolute dislike of punk, his relationship with the bands of the era and much more in part 1 of our talk with him on this week's edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST. Were back with Dem Vinyl Boyz this week and were diving into the debut album of Atlanta's most iconic rap group, OutKast. Their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmizik" released April 26, 1994, was largely influential in the Atlanta rap scene and helped distinguish Southern hip hop as a credible hip hop scene during East Coast and West Coast hip hop's market dominance at the time. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" incorporates analog elements such as Southern-styled guitar licks, languid soul melodies, mellow 1970s funk grooves, digital hip hop production elements such as programmed snare beats, booty bass elements, including Roland TR-808 clave rhythms, and old school hip hop elements, including E-mu SP-1200-styled drums and turntable scratches. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African American in South Atlanta, OutKast wrote and recorded the album as teenagers and addressed coming of age themes with the album's songs. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" charted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum in the United States, denoting one million copies sold. After the album was certified platinum, LaFace Records gave Outkast more creative control and advanced money for their 1996 follow-up album ATLiens, which some consider to be an all time classic. Vibe Magazine included the album on a 2004 list of "51 Essential Albums "that represent" a generation, a sound, and in many cases, a movement", writing that OutKast, determined the South had something to say, and after emerging from the Dungeon production lab, they said it all, sometimes sang it all—pointedly, funkdafied, and putting on absolutely no East Coast pretense. Classic." Thanks for tuning in to Dem Vinyl Boyz, like and subscribe!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Nine is the fourth composite number, and the first composite number that is odd. 9 is the highest single-digit number in the decimal system. By Mihăilescu's theorem, 9 is the only positive perfect power that is one more than another positive perfect power, since the square of 3 is one more than the cube of 2. The Beatles created a sound collage with Revolution 9. For the band, saying number nine in songs was an inside joke. For the Vinyl Ventures crew Essential #9 means light at the end of the essential tunnel. Tune in and drop out, you will dig it.
As the year winds down, the guys are walking the gravelly confines of the end of the Essential Albums road. This time, another 20 are revealed according to our fearless Venturers. Will the dark horses win out? Will the hits keep on coming? Tune in now and listen for the beginning...of the conclusion of our Essential Albums list. Don't Cost Nuthin'.
The 7th installment of the essential album list is like a James Bond film, change the characters (albums) and keep the same story-line resulting in a brilliant production. Maybe, just maybe, the Vinyl Ventures crew is creating a comparison that is a bit outlandish. But, on the essential show the boys break out some surprises to keep the list interesting.
Welcome to season two of the show that talks about stuff on purpose! TRAPPO is back with our next round of essential albums, but we're not just doing the same old boring thing we did to kick off our first season. That would be a waste of time. At the beginning of this 100 Essential Album shows John and Jason thought - "No problem, we have thousands to choose from, this will be easy". Along the way discovering hidden gems in their collections or picking up that missing wax, this journey has been a treat. Thanks for joining the Vinyl Ventures Team for the ride.

Song: I Hear GeorgeSong by: Gail Nobles © 2021Music by: Gail NoblesPhoto credit: Joe Loonghttps://flic.kr/p/3bs8MxUsage: Wikipedia CC BY-SA 2.0Singer's speech: WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS TOGETHERNESS! ONE NATION! (Singing)Announcer: Hey! This is Gail Nobles. It's almost midnight. Y'all ever leave the radio on while you're sleeping? The Glitch Sound! Yea this is Gail Nobles up with ya. So tune into the podcast. Today's topic: George Clinton. Singer's speech: Thank you George Clinton. I see where you're coming from. Wake up Nation! It's time to come together and do what's right. There's a mighty hand that has kept us here, and sometimes it seems like it's moving away. Get it into your mind. One Nation.Announcer: Do you remember when George would say (Feet don't fail me now)? The song “One Nation Under A Groove” was referring to dancing as a way to freedom. Today people still want freedom and believe in fighting for it. When I was a little girl, George Clinton's music seemed a little strange to me in the 70's. He knew things I didn't. But looking at the world today, I understand rebellion and what might have inspired George. Still, his reason for writing the song may not have been political. But when I see what's going on in the world today, I hear George better than I ever did before. And also, you have to be careful what you say. I hope you understand. Feet don't fail me now. One Nation Under A Groove is the ninth studio album by American funk and rock band Funkadelic, released on Sept. 22, 1978 on Warner Bros Records. One Nation Under a Groove was Funkadelic's most commercially successful album, reaching number 16 on the Billboard 200 and being certified platinum in the US, and was one of the band's most critically lauded albums. It is also regarded by many as the greatest funk album of all time and ranks at or near the top of many "best album" lists in disparate genres.[10] The album was later featured on Vibe magazine's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century list. The album is ranked number 177 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in both 2003 and 2012 editions. You know George came back in 1982 with the song Atomic Dog. The track was released as a single in 1982 and became the P-Funk collective's last to reach #1 on the US R&B chart. Atomic Dog is now regarded a classic in black popular music. It was at first held back from radio stations. When I hear the song, to me it's about men chasing women like dogs chase cats. Some men are like dogs. Again, I hear George.I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to Postgirl's Recordings. It's a show about the meaning of a song. Today's topic George Clinton. “ I Hear George” by Gail Nobles on the Cat Bear © 2021.

What is an essential album? How many albums are essential? Some may argue every album you own is essential, while others will say no that list can only be 20 essential albums. John and Jay begin this list with 10 essential albums each. Every definition of essential is different and for each collector the list will be different. Vinyl Ventures loves lists and this kicks off what we hope will be a great discussion and an on-going series.
Content Note: ear wax, depression, cat diarrhea The episode intended to highlight Jaclyn & Donna's personal essential albums list sees the pair discussing masking, vocal authenticity and sensory processing issues. Jaclyn has a helluva'n axe to grind with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Donna explains the Dean Winters Cinematic Universe. When sharing the emotional impact of the albums and music that shaped them, neither shy away from the sadness, directionlessness and lessons from their teens & 20s.
