Disney fans rejoice! On this episode we're discussing the infamous Magic Kingdom attraction, ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter, and a live show in Los Angeles paying tribute to this theme park attraction in an extreme way. Joining me to discuss are the creators of the live show “Alien Encounter”, Adam Franklin and Amit Itelman. I was blown away by the insanity of it all as I was being drenched in alien mucus and blood in a live show unlike anything I'd ever experienced. It was absolutely clear to me from the moment the show began that the folks involved are big fans and have great respect for the Disney parks. Enjoy my conversation with the creators of “Alien Encounter” while we discuss the development of their live show and the original Disney attraction it's based on. While Disneyland and Walt Disney World seem to have mostly the same experiences and rides as each other, only one attraction stands out as possibly being too insane to have existed in the first place, much less in a Disney Park. The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter was ... something else. Relying on sound design and physical effects rather than animatronics, this Child of the Eisner Era lasted far longer than it had any right to. The concept and execution were so non-Disney it's surprising it was ever assembled in the first place. A truly immersive ride that was also scary? Sign us up! In this episode we take a look at the attraction's origins as an ride inspired by the movie Alien, the changes it went through during planning and development and its closure in 2003. This week in Disney news, despite the circumstances, Disney would still like Black Widow to be a theatrical release. Also, the Leave a Legacy monoliths are back, but in a different form. There is now a rainbow wall outside the park where you can take your picture and post it on your instagram because walls are a thing.   Love is in the air. Valentine’s Day is such a nice, happy holiday. So...let’s imagine we’re in a bizarro world where instead of happy, fun times, Disney is known as a place that can deliver truly chilling ride experiences. They develop a ride around the idea of a well-known sci-fi horror film in which an alien eviscerates human beings. In the ride, an alien escapes its containment pod and rampages throughout the auditorium, surprising and horrifying guests with what seems like blood spatter, neck breathing, and the alien itself jumping onto your shoulder harness.    No need to imagine that, because from 1995-2003, such a ride existed: ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. Although the ride never ended up including the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise because...wow that’s not a fit with the Disney brand...it did have a horrifying animatronic alien created by George Lucas himself to help audience members have nightmares for days. Why did Disney decide to take this path? Why not use the Xenomorph from Alien? Why Tomorrowland? What kind of crazy parent would take their child on this? We answer these questions and more in this week’s chilling episode.    Looking to plan a trip to Disney?  Book with our official travel agent Becky Ginther from Castle Dreams Travel.  Contact her today at beckyg@castledreamstravel.com and let her know Enchanted Ears sent you!   Check us out on Facebook and Youtube or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode or support us on Patreon.

The most terrifying attraction to ever be constructed at the Disney Parks, and perhaps the most controversial, was the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. Replacing Mission to Mars at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Alien Encounter had a soft opening in December 1994 and officially opened in June 1995. For the next 8 years, Alien Encounter grew a cult following with many Disney fans, especially those who loved sci-fi horror, but its terrifying and violent sequences targeting a more mature audience was inevitably not the right fit for Tomorrowland. Inevitably, the attraction closed in 2003 and was replaced by Stitch's Great Escape, which in many ways was simply a [very] toned down, kid-friendly version of the attraction. In today's episode we'll explore the history of Disney's Alien Encounter, including how George Lucas was brought to the table to consult on the project. We'll also discuss some of the details of the attraction for those who were not able to experience it, and I'll take you with me for a truly terrifying visit back to the Tomorrowland Interplanetary Convention Center for this X-S Tech demonstration. Were you able to experience Alien Encounter? Had this attraction been built in another park, do you think it would have surpassed its 8-year lifespan? We discuss some of the manufacturing, history, and theories on these things. The story goes on…. Listener Mail Right to the mailbag this month! The bag is full and we love that! Every month, you can possibly get on the show, so be sure to write to us at podcast@retrowdw.com. Also, top tier donors can even join us on a show! Take a look at how you can join us live on an episode. Downey wrote in asking about the talking elevator at The Contemporary Resort. We discuss this being a real thing and also the 80s/90s talking craze. Keith touched base this month regarding Birnbaum’s, which we cite often. Keith actually worked on the books – thanks so much for writing Keith. We heard from Andie regarding injuries on Alien Encounter. Her mother had some issues on this ‘ride’ and we’re curious who else has been injured on Alien Encounter? Bill wrote in about being in the College Program and how he collected Alien Encounter flyers, which helped promote the ride. These are so amazing and we’re so glad you saved these and scanned them for us. Our final note is from Neuro, he gives us some fun acronyms for EPCOT. Good stuff Neuro! Audio Rewind Our audio rewind this month is from the Space Mountain exit queue – Thank you for all the guesses and emails! We have a winner! Congratulations Chuck Jordan! If you think you know the answer to this month’s audio rewind, email us! contest@retrowdw.com – This month, the winner will be getting a 2016 WDW Poster Art Calendar. All entries are due 10/12/2020 and a random winner will be selected. Main Topic We are staying in Tomorrowland this month, but zeroing in on a specific attraction that is no longer with us: Alien Encounter, or the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter if you are using its full legal name. This one came online back when Tomorrowland had the major overhaul in 1995 and is a fan favorite. X-S Tech is hosting a demonstration at the Tomorrowland Interplanetary Convention Center and everyone is invited, including you! How leads us this month with lots of history, first-hand experiences, and also the two versions. With this being Part 1, we focus on the versions and what everything looked and felt like. One of the first things everybody notices are those porthole type windows; they had a tint to them that really didn’t allow you to see in, which created some questions right from the get-go outside. We learn about why there is a manhole cover lifted and also why the massive yellow tower is on top of the building. The story elements were plentiful and most of them went unnoticed. This attraction was designed to draw in those teenagers and pull them back from Universal. It was high energy and extreme – which is what the Magic Kingdom needed for that particular crowd. Now this attraction had two versions – we include them both in this episode comparing the similarities and differences. The first show is missing a bit to connect some dots and the second gets darker and creepier. How explains how the pre-show undergoes a major change across the versions as well. If you never had the chance to go on Alien Encounter, this episode will paint a pretty good picture with lots of audio clips and on-ride sounds. We also get into answering lots of why questions as a group, as we all took a spin on this one over the years with varied success and enjoyment. We hope you have a good time with us back in Tomorrowland of the 90s!

Connor gets emotional about rat violence, we talk about about the infamous & unforgettable 'ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter' ride at Disney, and we all wonder what exactly our folks were recording on extended-play tapes back in the '90s.  Overview: This podcast takes a look at what came after Mission to Mars closed in the Magic Kingdom. In short, it was a creative thrill ride that didn't provide physical thrills, but rather psychological ones. Seize the future with XS! Notes: Michael Eisner asked for it to be more terrifying along the way. And the Imagineers had to work with the existing building, and most of the set designs in order to keep costs down. Arguably, this is one of the most non-Disney attractions ever put in to the Magic Kingdom.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daves-disney-view/message

Afterward, I talk about the show that replaced it, which is a truly terrible attraction - Stitch's Great Escape.   Notes: The movie review is from Jeremy Jahns (http://www.jeremyjahns.com/). I am amazed at how much history there is in this attraction.   --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daves-disney-view/message
