In the US, there are schools for everything—of course you can study business, or to become a doctor. But also if you want to be an electrician, or an airplane mechanic—someone can teach you that. And then you've got UConn, which has offered an apparently quite intense puppetmaking major, every year since 1964. So why not for shoemaking? Examples do exist, but they are far too scant—you can head to Atlanta to learn shoemaking from Marcel Mrsan, but that's far from the only work he's doing every day. Brooklyn Shoe Space, Cobbler Bushwick, and the Chicago School of Shoemaking are all fantastic and lighting shoemaking sparks every day, although they currently cater more to hobbyists. DW Frommer's school in Montana was a cowboy bookmaking bastion, but it closed when he passed last year. So what about a multi-year, school that teaches shoe design AND making? I just visited one. The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, the impressive design school which has grown a full degree program that heavily involves shoemaking. I spent two days at CCS this past summer to meet with its program chair Aki Choklat, along with bespoke shoemaking toolmaker and faculty member Tom Carbone, plus a whole bunch of very invested students who really knew their way around a sole stitcher. What Aki and Tom are building at CCS is impressive, and dare I say quite needed, in a landscape where it's easier to pick up shoemaking than ever before—as long as you do it online, by yourself—but far too hard in the United States to find quality hands-on teaching. And so we talked about that, how the CCS program came about and has grown, what the hell AI is going to do to the shoe industry, and plenty more. https://www.ccsdetroit.edu/https://www.instagram.com/akichoklat/?hl=enhttps://www.akichoklat.com/2025 dates and location for Stitchdown's Boot Camp 3—the world's fair of shoes and boots and leather and more—coming soon.https://www.stitchdownbootcamp.com/Support the Shoecast and join the most interesting shoe-and-boot-loving community on the internet with a Stitchdown Premium membershiphttps://www.stitchdown.com/join-stitchdown-premium/

Welcome to Season 2 Episode 1 of The People It Takes! In this weeks episode, our host, Lauryn, finds herself back on the west coast (best coast) at The Disneyland Hotel with former cast member, current content creator, Tim (@timmilles). Before flooding social media with hilarious Disney cat videos and and all-to-relatable cast member content , Tim was a participant in the Disney College Program, but not the average College Program, the DisneyLAND college program, which is no longer offered. Not to mention, Tim had a pretty neat spot with experiencing working the opening weekend of a now, beloved, area of California Adventure. Though he is no longer with Disney, Tim still creates magic and brings countless laughs to park lovers as a content creator. Tim not only made magic for guests, but also took care of his fellow cast, which is exactly what made him so great at being one of The People It Takes. We hope you enjoy this episode and we are SO happy you're here. ALL opinions and experiences are our own, l, as well as my guests, do not speak on behalf of The Walt Disney Company in any way.

In This Episode: Coach comments about how to interpret a college coach's question if you (a high school baseball player) has ever played first base or not...or any other position for that matter - and you have not. What does that actually mean and what is that college coach trying to communicate to you? What are your chances if you decide you want to attempt to "walk on" to a college baseball program? What should your expectations be and how should you navigate the "walk on" process. Coach adds commentary to last week's discussion about the difference between an official visit vs a non-official visit. What's expected and included. We'll wrap up back to school week at the U.S. Army War College with the re-release of a great discussion between Ed Kaplan, Mike Baim and former Editor-in-Chief Jacqueline E. Whitt, to highlight the contributions of the U.S. Army War College's Eisenhower Series College Program (ESCP). In a time when the nation sees increasing political divides and claims that the civil-military gap is ever widening, this program reaches out to reverse the trend. Ed and Mike explain how each academic year a joint cohort of military officers and national security professionals reach out to colleges and town halls across the nation to introduce War College students to audiences that may have little direct knowledge of the military. Their goal is to have reasoned and thoughtful discussions with the society they serve and protect. And for more than 50 years the Eisenhower Program has succeeded in closing that gap with both the rising and established generations in those communities. Ed Kaplan moved on to become the Dean of the School of Strategic Landpower, but the ESCP is still going strong under the leadership of Col Leon Perkowski in the Department of National Security and Strategy. If you're interested in participating in the program or if your institution is interested in potentially scheduling a speaking engagement with the ESCP, you can contact Col Perkowski at leon.perkowski@armywarcollege.edu
