Our mission is simple: make work play in spaces across the globe. You have to work. You probably have to work in an office. But you do not have to be bored and uncomfortable. Focal Upright empowers you to break free from your sedentary lifestyle, embrace your humanity and add a little play into your day, as well. The human body evolved to move throughout the day. The human mind evolved to be creative through play. It is about time your office environment evolved to meet the needs of the modern worker through better design and better tools. Martin is the founder and head of design. As CEO, he does whatever it takes on a daily basis, but is happiest working on the steady stream of innovative products for the company. Keeping up with his thoughts (and prototypes) is his biggest challenge, regularly leaving a trail of flotsam in his wake. Martin is perhaps best known as the founder of KEEN Footwear. He enjoyed a long career as a footwear designer before turning to designing furniture. Martin is a graduate of the Industrial Design program at the Ohio State University. He has received numerous awards for his work and is a frequent speaker at design and entrepreneurial events. As often as he can be, Martin’s on a sailboat, bike, or paddle board. http://www.focaluprightfurniture.com https://www.facebook.com/FocalUprightFurniture https://twitter.com/focalupright

Smart People Should Build Things: The Venture for America Podcast
Martin Keen comes from a long line of craftsman. Martin's father was known to build furniture and both his father and grandfather made shoes. It is no surprise that Martin followed in their footsteps. After going to industrial design school and experiencing many injuries in a sailboat, Martin designed a sandal with protective toe gear for sailors. His successful design led to the creation of Keen Footwear, a company that still exists today. While Martin was working as a designer and a consultant for other companies, he realized that his creativity suffered when he was sedentary. He began tinkering in his barn and built an upright seat device that kept him energized by correcting his posture. The first prototype was created in 1995 but Martin didn't launch Focal Upright until 2012. Today Martin and his wife, Mary (who appears as a surprise guest in this episode!), continue to build Focal Upright Furniture with the help of Venture for America Fellows. In total, Focal has hired 6 Fellows and continues to be an amazing partner to VFA. Tune in to this week's episode to learn more about Martin's journey from shoe designer to furniture designer and why standing isn't the answer.

While my family visited the island of Oahu, an old friend that was in my youth group 25 years ago invited me on to speak to the 307th Expeditionary Signal Battalion. I absolutely agreed to present and instead of talking about leadership or technology or any of the things I speak about professionally.. I spoke about some really uncommon topics for the military, because I felt it necessary to help them connect with their mindset and soul. It was so warmly received, I was given permission to share it publicly… and that’s what we’re going to do today. I’m sharing with you, the recording of that speech with soldiers of the US Army base in Hawaii. Not only did it impact them, I believe it will be encouraging to you too. Kevin Roberts is, personally, experiencing a fail of his own creation. Recently, he did an interview for Business Insider and, unfortunately, was quoted saying some very irresponsible comments regarding gender equality in the advertising industry. This fail has cost him his roles as Chairman Saatchi & Saatchi, and Head Coach Publicis Groupe. This interview was recorded before his career went sideways and I wrestled with publishing this show. In fact, I did reach out to his team to offer an opportunity for Kevin to share his side of the story. Unfortunately, they did not reply. Regardless, I believe the content shared in this conversation is still packed with valuable content. I ask that you provide a level of grace to this man for a mistake he’s made and trust that this was a lesson for him to learn and grow… we all deserve that. On this show, we discuss Kevin’s new book, 64 Shots, the rapid changes in today’s world, and approaching it differently and positively. Living in the present is an easy concept to understand, but not always an easy one to walk out. For many, the past keeps us in a state of longing or regret. We either want to get back to the “good ol’ days” or feel crippled by the pain of some negative experience. For others, the future is a perpetual pursuit for “this”, the thing that once you achieved, isn’t as good as the “next” thing. We endlessly chase after the role, relationship, position, income, accolade, or pinnacle that will bring happiness. Life is often a distraction of comparison, and the pressures of “perfection’. On this show I’m flying solo to share with you some life-giving encouragement, connecting you to your inner core of power, and cultivate a sense of life satisfaction. Hans Early-Nelson inquired with coaching needs. He’s an artisan metalsmith from Minneapolis, Minnesota, who specializes in custom metal fabricating, blacksmithing and jewelry. In the email Hans sent me, he posed some initial questions around business struggles he was having. I replied with my initial thoughts and then offered to do a pro-bono coaching call to see if we could explore his challenges a little more deeply. I think his experience equals a number of entrepreneurs I’ve talked to and wanted to capture his words so you could see you’re not alone if you have the same challenged. Hans allowed me to record it for the show – the call has been slightly edited for time, but not for content. Host Brad Kearns talks with Martin Keen, CEO of Focal Upright Furniture—a cutting edge company headquartered in Rhode Island. Focal Upright is responsible for a wildly popular line of functional furniture products, including their unique leaning and mobile seats and assorted upright desk options. Martin discusses the many health hazards of prolonged sitting (electrical activity ceases in your leg muscles, fat metabolism enzymes decline by 90%, calorie burning minimizes, blood flow to brain is reduced, spine is compressed, hip flexors tighten, etc.) and how assuming an upright position can deliver exceptional health benefits. Unlike other standup desk setups that are all-or-nothing propositions and can often represent too daunting a transition from decades of sitting at work, Martin asserts that the Focal Mogo leaning chair allows you to transition into an upright work setup without needing a chair as a safety valve. This is because the Mogo can support all of your weight when desired, while promoting a stable and elongated spine position. Interestingly, none of the Focal employees have chairs, but they do have a designated lounge (with couches, etc.) where they can go to take a true and authentic break from work. When they return to their desks, they put they bodies, and minds, into an optimal position to focus and get work done! Enjoy this interesting conversation with one of the leaders in the dynamic workstation movement!
