It's been a struggle all season for the Lakers to find supporting players to put around their Big 3 (it's been a struggle to keep the Big 3 on the floor, too, but that's a different story). Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington, and Trevor Ariza have all been ineffective. DeAndre Jordan, too. Kendrick Nunn is yet to play. A bright spot, though, has been the pickup of Stanley Johnson, who has brought badly needed athleticism on the defensive end, and quickly become a favorite of Frank Vogel.Wednesday, the Lakers reached an agreement with Johnson that will keep him around for the rest of the season, and give the Lakers first dibs on his services next year as well. It's a good deal for all involved, and it's not impossible that, stripped of the expectations that come with being a high lottery pick, Johnson, still only 25, could find a niche and develop with the Lakers. Not into a star - that ship has sailed - but as a valuable role player. It's a cool payoff for a player who worked very hard to make his way back to the NBA.From there... the great NBA writer Marc Stein has news about Russell Westbrook, and those rumors about a potential deal to the Houston Rockets for John Wall. It seems the Lakers, rightly, are unwilling to include a first round pick to rid themselves of Westbrook. But it's an applaudingly cheeky move from the Rockets to put that possibility out there, just in case things melt down and the Lakers get desperate.Meanwhile, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN wrote a great feature this week talking about Westbrook post-benching, and how he and the Lakers are trying to get the on-court results from this roster to match expectations. A couple important takeaways: There's no Plan B. The Lakers know they're pot-committed to this experiment. Westbrook's comfort zone extends well beyond what he's doing on the floor. HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Stanley Johnson gets a contract. Cool for him, smart for the Lakers.SEGMENT 2: On Westbrook for Wall. The Lakers, it seems have their limits when it comes to undoing the Westbrook deal.SEGMENT 3: What goes into Westbrook's overall comfort? How have off court adjustments impacted him?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! But even if Locked On Lakers listeners didn't enjoy their dinner (or their families), they at least got to bask in the glow of Wednesday's strong Lakers victory over the Indiana Pacers. The 124-116 OT win capped the Lakers' roadie at 2-3, and featured some extremely interesting wrinkles. You had Anthony Davis missing the game due to the effects of the fever he fought through to play in New York, and hasn't yet shaken. You had strong supporting performances from Malik Monk and Wayne Ellington, along with 20 hard-fought points from Russell Westbrook, who didn't shoot particularly well, but got to the free throw line eleven times, hitting nine. You had the Lakers clawing back after being down for nearly the entire game. And then you had an incredible performance down the stretch from LeBron James, who scored 15 points during the last two minutes of regulation and overtime. He also spent a large chunk of the game playing small-ball center, a look that helped fuel the comeback, and unlock a strong version of the Lakers. Could this become part of the Lakers' identity moving forward? And finally, an interesting GQ interview with Dwight Howard, who talked Lakers, roses, snakes, and more!Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT ONE: LeBron's still got it, folks!SEGMENT TWO: Could LeBron at center play a role in helping a rudderless Lakers discover an identity?SEGMENT THREE: The biggest takeaways from an equally serious and quirky interview with Dwight Howard. In this week's episode, Michael and Cooper are joined by Lakers Nation's Daniel Starkand to run through the latest eventful week in Lakers basketball (4:00), including THT's return, AD's dominance, Russ' jumper, Wayne Ellington's impact, the Lakers effort (29:00), and expectations for LeBron's return. They break down Russ vs. The Rim (40:00), share Caruso memories, and preview the upcoming week. They also explain Anthony Davis' Packers fandom (63:00) and praise the City Edition unis. Finally, they close out the ep with a Showtime (70:00) through a fire THT card, Jeanie Buss' disturbing IG post, LeBron's lucrative investment, Mac McLung dunking school, and Psycho Kobe Stories. So on the one hand, the Lakers got huge, mega-star performances from their three mega-stars. They won on Tuesday, running their record to a more tidy 5-3 after a very shaky start (in the win/loss column, at least). Russell Westbrook continues to look much more comfortable playing with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, seeming to settle into an attacking rhythm and turning the ball over a lot less (four or fewer in four of his last five games). On the other hand...The Lakers surrendered 70 (70!!!) points to the HOUSTON ROCKETS in the first half of Tuesday's win. The same Rockets who entered the game as the league's 28th most efficient offensive team. Or, put another way, the 3rd most inefficient. They were nearly victimized by two late side-out-of-bounds plays that left Houston a half second or so from going to the line with a chance to tie the game. The Rockets suck, and the Lakers only won by two. So there's that.Bottom line, the Lakers continue to drive their fans crazy, benefitting only local cardiologists and other dispensers of heart care. It's going to be a bumpy ride, people. And what will it look like as players get back off the injury list and onto the court? Is Malik Monk feeling some footsteps, whether from Austin Reaves or the impending return of Wayne Ellington and Kendrick Nunn (not to mention Talen Horton-Tucker)?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers win, and the Big Three is dominant. Let's talk about why...SEGMENT 2: LeBron says Westbrook is starting to "fit out," meaning he's playing like Russell Westbrook should play. Not trying to be someone he's not because others think that's what happens for the Lakers to thrive. What was the evidence on Tuesday? Is he turning a corner?SEGMENT 3: Austin Reaves is earning playing time, while Malik Monk seems to be bleeding it. Is it possible Monk is pressing because he knows those already-shrinking minutes could disappear once the roster is healthy? Is he attacking the time he's getting the right way?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!ShopifyGo to Shopify.com/lockedonnba for a FREE fourteen-day trial and get full access to Shopify's entire suite of features.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The sting of Wednesday's loss to Oklahoma City, in which the Lakers blew a 26-point lead, is still pretty fresh. The concern over a second straight missed game for LeBron James is palpable. Kendrick Nunn, Talen Horton-Tucker, Trevor Ariza and Wayne Ellington remain on the sidelines. The Lakers have not even staged a single practice with their full roster intact, and it's not going to get better anytime soon.So what exactly can accomplish right now? Those are the big issues for Friday's show, starting with LeBron's ankle injury. No word yet about his status for Friday's game against Cleveland at Staples Center, but whether he plays or not, given his injury history with the Lakers, how much concern should missed games in the first couple weeks create? Especially given how critical he is to the team's identity and on-court continuity? What about the defense? Guys are missing, for sure. How much impact will the return of important rotation players actually have? On the one hand, the guys they're missing are among the team's best defenders. On the other, we're not talking about a bunch of Defensive Player of the Year candidates, here. Are the Lakers going to be too reliant on LeBron and Anthony Davis to play high end defense for an entire season? What does that mean for their health, and the ability to produce on the other end? How good is good enough? Finally, it's time to check out Davis, who was the subject of an interesting mini-debate on Lakers Twitter about his performance thus far. How has his offense evolved? Where are the shots coming from this year relative to others in L.A.? Should Davis abandon the 3-point shot, which he's been encouraged to take for a while now?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Ok, LeBron's hurt. It's ok to be nervous, right? Because he's the sun around which the rest of this stuff orbits?SEGMENT 2: What's real and what's not through five games, particularly on defense. How much is fixable today, what might be fixed when guys get healthy, and once they are back... just how good can this team be?SEGMENT 3: Davis is managing very high expectations. How has he played? Is the shot selection as ideal as it should be? Spoiler alert: The answer to the last one has little to do with whether he plays center or power forward.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Tuesday's preseason loss to Warriors didn't just present the first look at the Lakers' Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. It raised the question of who should start alongside that trio of All-Stars. Granted, Frank Vogel's hands are a bit tied at the moment, given all the players who are shelved with injuries. But could Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony, the two filling out Tuesday's lineup, fit the bill moving forward? Bazemore feels like a lock by now, but Melo? More debatable. So the Kamenetzkys do just that. What are the pros and cons of the future Hall of Famer vs. Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn or other looks?Whatever the rotation chosen, how much fun will the Lakers actually be to watch? ESPN's Zach Lowe offered up some thoughts in a recent column, and the Kamenetzkys react to his assessment. Finally, undrafted two-way player Austin Reaves has been turning heads of late with some unexpectedly un-rookie play. Is he a viable option once games actually count?Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: What's the best starting lineup for the Lakers, and does it include Melo?SEGMENT 2: On a pure "fun" scale, how enjoyable will the Lakers be?SEGMENT 3: Is Hillbilly Kobe a thing?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Review of Lakers first preseason game What I think of Malik Monk, Kendrick Nunn, DeAndre Jordan, Kent Bazemore, Wayne Ellington, and more AD playing in first game since last years injury Dwight Howards energy and fouling out of the game Review of 2nd preseason game against the Phoenix Suns What to expect going forward.
Los Angeles Laker and NBA veteran Wayne Ellington talks to us about the NCAA's new NIL rule and some of his entrepreneurial ventures.
The 2021-22 season is officially off and running. Tuesday, the Lakers were the last of the NBA's 30 teams to hold their media day. It was a brisk, efficient affair, too, in which we learned a lot about the group. There was a lot of talk about Anthony Davis and where he'll play (A.D. removed the mystery quickly, saying he expects to be the center, and is comfortable with it), how Russell Westbrook fits in with his hometown squad (very well, even if it will take a minute to work out the kinks) and the impact he'll have (energy, pace). How will LeBron adjust to the group? It is his genius, after all. Or one part of it at least. And vaccination talk. Lots and lots of vaccination talk. The team will be 100% vaxxed by the opener, which is critically important, players and Frank Vogel said repeatedly, for getting the team where it wants to go.So what does it all mean? Listen and find out.Make sure to listen to Locked on Lakers five days a week! Every day, Monday through Friday. And subscribe to Locked On Lakers on YouTube for another way to access the podcast, plus reaction to breaking news.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis says he's the center. Why it matters, and why playing with Westbrook should make that transition much simpler for him, getting to enjoy some of the perks with less of the stuff he doesn't like.SEGMENT 2: How does Westbrook fit in? LeBron says Russ shouldn't change who he is as a player, and that it's up to James to make him feel comfortable. Is he right? What exactly does that mean? And why is LeBron so good at adjusting to all the different roster combinations he's seen over his career? Wayne Ellington had a great explanation.SEGMENT 3: The Lakers are fully vaxxed, and that matters for a lot more than just public health (though that matters a lot). To a man, they framed it as critical for reaching the goals they have as a group, and explain why.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. With 24 hours before the Lakers' open camp, The Athletics' Sam Amick, Shams Charania and Bill Oram joined forces to write an extremely detailed breakdown of the Lakers' offseason, and all the different variables shaping events like the Russell Westbrook trade, a massive roster shakeup, and future plans for certain players. There's a lot from this opus to chop up, so the Kamenetzkys highlighted what they found most compelling and trenchant.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: According to The Athletic's various sources, the expected plan is currently for Anthony Davis to... start at center... with Wayne Ellington and Trevor Ariza filling out as the 2 and 3 alongside LeBron James and Westbrook. As usual, Andy is gonna need to see Davis in that role full-time (more or less) to believe it, but should that prove the case, there are obviously a ton of implications. Pretty much all of which are excellent.SEGMENT 2: LeBron has long denied doubling as the defacto General Manager of his teams throughout the years, including the Lakers. Nobody has ever believed him, and according to this report, with good reason.SEGMENT 3: The report details the Westbrook trade from the Wizards' perspective, and why they were more inclined to keep the point guard than many people assumed. Plus, only a one-year extension for Frank Vogel? What gives?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers are just about ready to open training camp. It's coming on Tuesday! But before it does, we take a look at a couple lingering, and extremely important, questions from last week's press conference with General Manager/VP of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka. (Along with some housekeeping news about that 14th roster spot...)First, Pelinka laid out some lofty goals for Anthony Davis this season. Nothing short of him finishing as the best two way player in the NBA, with a second championship thrown in to boot. Is that a fair expectation? Yes, given his talent and the need for him to elevate his play over last season for the Lakers to get where they want to go. Is Davis up to the task?Second, the Lakers have more players capable of contributing to the rotation than minutes available for them to do it. Pelinka spoke at length Thursday about shared sacrifice and mindset, especially among the role players. Wayne Ellington echoed those comments on a podcast last week. But all of this is easier said than done. How effectively will the group function, if guys aren't playing as much as they'd like? From there, it's a look at the roster. The Lakers, no surprise, are a top heavy group. They've been top heavy for the last couple seasons. But the gap between their best players and the supporting cast does seem wider this year than last, or even the year before. Is that a problem? It's just one question facing one of the most unique rosters the NBA has ever seen. (Something reinforced with a very fun thought experiment involving a time machine before the show is over.)HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Welcome, Austin Reaves! Plus, Rob Pelinka lays out high expectations for Anthony Davis. Is he up for it?SEGMENT 2: More AD, plus are the Lakers actually prepared to make the shared sacrifice everyone is talking about heading into camp?SEGMENT 3: Does the top heavy nature of the roster really matter?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Sweat BlockGet it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Lakers Potential Starting Lineup 2021-2022 Season | Who Should The Lakers Start?!?! The Los Angeles Lakers have undergone extreme roster turnover over the past two seasons in the wake of winning a championship in 2020 and a first-round playoff exit in 2021. Heading into 2021-22, only LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Talen Horton-Tucker remain from the 2020 title team, though they recently brought back Dwight Howard, who spent last season with the Philadelphia 76ers. Newcomers Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn, Trevor Ariza, Malik Monk and Kent Bazemore will all play key roles for the Lakers. Getting more talent is step one. Putting it all together is step two. Now, coach Frank Vogel must build lineups that maximize everyone's talents. The first question: Assuming good health for everyone, how should the Lakers start games this season? So Z Nation, who should the Lakers start alongside the Big 3??? Comments down below
The Los Angeles Lakers have been busy the last two weeks, trading for Russell Westbrook and signing Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza, Dwight Howard, Kendrick Nunn, Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore, Kendrick Nunn and Malik Monk in free agency. But with a roster currently holding eight players 30 or older -- and five who are 35 or older -- is the Lake Show set for another NBA Title run? Our guys Aaron Berlin and Otto Strong break it down. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Lakers are the Oldest team in the NBA -The Los Angeles Lakers have filled out most of the roster and we are at the point in the offseason where the team is going to explore its final roster options. This will likely include the team signing a locker room veteran (such as Jared Dudley) but it could also include a young player to develop or a sharpshooter to help the rotation. It would not be all that surprising to see the Lakers also leave one open roster spot for a future 10-day contract or buyout signing. It is smart to go into the season with 14 players instead of 15. The Lakers are currently at 12.There has been a bit of a trend this offseason as Rob Pelinka has brought back four players who were formerly on the Lakers. Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington and Kent Bazemore are all former Lakers. We have explored some of the former Lakers on the market but one name that has not come up much is Isaiah Thomas — who is in the news right now as he dropped an 81-point game, Kobe Bryant style…
Never let it be said that the Kamenetzky Brothers aren't agent of change. During Friday's show, they discussed how Frank Vogel still didn't have a contract extension, and the potential issues that could arise this coming season if he were allowed to coach as a lame duck. Hours later, the team announced that Vogel had a longer deal. The terms haven't made reported yet, but given the complicated nature of getting several new faces (most notably Russell Westbrook) on the same page in the winnest of win-now seasons, it's crucial to feel support from the highest places. In the meantime, Zoom pressers were held introducing (or in a few cases, reintroducing) Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington, Talen Horton-Tucker, Dwight Howard, and Kendrick Dunn. Some interesting thoughts were shared from the veterans and the youngsters. And finally, Kyle Kuzma conducted a Twitter Q&A, and reinforced his longstanding belief that his role with the Lakers prevented the fullest display of his skills. The Kamenetzkys discuss how Kuzma handled the last two seasons as a role player who bought in, but wanted more, and was concerned the situation could adversely affect his market value as an impending free agent. (It was a comparable situation to Dennis Schröder's during his one controversial season in L.A.)Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkyHOST 1: Why it matters that Vogel has an extension.HOST 2: What did the new (and returning) Lakers say during their pressers?HOST 3: Is Kuzma capable of being the player he thinks he is?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Lakers Free Agency So Far | Carmelo Anthony Lands In LA | Malik Monk And Kendrick Nunn Taking Less There is little doubt that the Los Angeles Lakers have emerged as one of the biggest winners following what was a frenzied Day 1 of free agency. LeBron James is well aware of his team's epic haul over the past 24 hours and The King has taken to social media to share his reaction to the same. All LeBron did was post an image of each of the Lakers' eight new acquisitions. This was more than enough to indicate how pumped he is about LA's squad heading into the new season. Prior to free agency officially opening, the Lakers already struck a deal with the Washington Wizards to acquire Russell Westbrook in a blockbuster deal. This was the start of a flurry of moves from LA, which included the additions of Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington, Malik Monk, Carmelo Anthony, and Kendrick Nunn. Needless to say, the Lakers have been busy and they have wasted no time in bolstering their lineup for what should be a bounce-back campaign for them in 2021-22. It is worth noting, however, that LA also lost a number of key players already. Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are heading to Washington as part of the Westbrook deal, while Alex Caruso is now a Chicago Bull. Andre Drummond has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, while Dennis Schroder is also expected to part ways with the Lakers. LA will be fielding an entirely new squad for the upcoming season, but by the looks of it, The King is more than happy with how things have shaped up. So Z Nation, how are you loving this Lakers team so far? And Who should the Lakers sign next in free agency??? Comments down below
Lakers Agree To Deals With Trevor Ariza, Dwight Howard, Wayne Ellington In Lakers Reunion | NBA Free Agency 2021 The Los Angeles Lakers opened their free agency period by signing three familiar faces: Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza, and Wayne Ellington. Ariza won a championship with L.A. in 2008-09, while Howard helped the Lakers to a title in 2019-20. He also spent one ill-fated season with the franchise alongside Kobe Bryant in 2012-13. Ellington, a sharpshooter, played for the Lakers in 2014-15. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the Ariza move. It had been all quiet on the LakeShow front almost two hours into 2021 NBA free agency, prior to the slew of signings. Minutes later, Yahoo's Chris Haynes broke the Ellington news. Next, Los Angeles completed the trifecta with the Howard deal. They gave this scoop to The Athletic's Shams Charania. In 12 minutes, three veterans were back in purple-and-gold. None of the deals should come as a surprise. In fact, all three players were reported to have an interest in a return to L.A. Ariza — like Andre Drummond, Buddy Hield, and many others — is a former client of Pelinka's. On the court, all three make a ton of sense. The Lakers need long wing defenders, shooting, and rim protection/running, and each player checks one of those boxes, respectively. Ariza, at 36, can still knock down open threes, while Ellington, 33, is coming off the most productive three-point shooting season of his career with the Detroit Pistons (42.2%). Howard, 35, was a vital ingredient to the 2019-20 team, and enthusiastically embraced a diminished role with limited responsibilities. He averaged 7.0 points and 8.4 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game for the Philadelphia 76ers last season. The big unknown, at the moment, is the details of the contracts, which could be essential to the Lakers' flexibility going forward. Because of their clogged cap sheet following the Russell Westbrook trade, Los Angeles needs to fill out their roster with re-signings, the $5.9 taxpayer mid-level, and veteran minimums. So Z Nation, what do you think about the Lakers free agent signing so far??? And who should the Lakers sign next??? Comments down below
We're putting the band back together! The Lakers got a little weird on Monday, as free agency started across the NBA, signing four players, all of whom have previously played for the Lakers. One of them (Dwight Howard), twice! So did Rob Pelinka have a good day?Sort of?Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore, Trevor Ariza and Howard make for a perfectly good use of veteran's minimum deals. Each offers something the Lakers could use and ought to exceed the value of the deals they signed. But the day had a cost, too. The Chicago Bulls signed Alex Caruso to a four year deal worth about 37 million. A big number for regular folks, but a completely reasonable (and easily anticipated) salary range for A.C., and according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Lakers didn't even put forth an effort keep him. Why? Luxury taxes, most likely. The Lakers are a tax paying team, and would like to keep that payroll down as much as possible, apparently. But the logic of swinging for the fences on Westbrook while simultaneously trying to save money on the supporting cast seems like a really dumb one. Nor is it the best look. Finally, answering some of your post-Day 1 mailbag questions. No Andy Kamenetzky, but Brian Kamenetzky takes a few.HOST: Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers signed four free agents, and all four make some sense, though will raise the average age of the team up a few notches.SEGMENT 2: Why losing Caruso is painful for the Lakers.SEGMENT 3: A little more AC, plus the mailbag!Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The most high-profile move the Pistons made was signing LiAngelo Ball, the middle of the Ball brothers. Speaking of high-profile moves, we brought in Doc Joe Brown to tell us about LiAngelo.
