What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Filmmaker Jannik Ehret is part of a unique trio that brought the wonderful documentary “Paisano Overhang” to FIlm Invasion Los Angeles in June 2025 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Short Film, Documentary as well as for Outstanding Cinematography, Documentary that was presented to Catalina Guerra Hoffman. It was no surprise to me to learn how smart and interesting Jannik was during our chat, and it made me extra eager to get to the 4 Questions to see what films inspired him along his way.
Happy Indie Film Friday! Filmmaker Jannik Ehret is part of a unique trio that brought the wonderful documentary “Paisano Overhang” to FIlm Invasion Los Angeles in June 2025. Among their collaboration “Indieknot Films,” the trio credited their film as, “Produced, Filmed & Edited by Dakota Kappen, Jannik Ehret, and Hayden Garratt.” This is one of the more honorably egalitarian things I have seen on the festival circuit. The trio took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Short Film, Documentary as well as for Outstanding Cinematography, Documentary that was presented to Catalina Guerra Hoffman. As you might imagine, Jannik and others were also operating cameras as “Paisano Overhang” essentially covered a live rock climbing event. Jannik volunteered to represent the Indieknot trio on this podcast and the others are certainly welcome to come on themselves someday. The men's season ticks on, same as it ever was, as Alcaraz and Sinner snag twin 500s in different countries. We talk a little (very little) about recent results and people being consistently weird in and about Asia. Then, we move into our listener mailbag segment, where we cover everything from how to address the late-season malaise to dealing with workplace narcissists. We finish with an extended review of Mariah's new album Here For It All, her first studio album since 2018. By the way, the episode title does not refer to our feelings on the album! 2:50 Carlos and Jannik add titles, Learner is your newcomer of the year 9:00 No one's talking to you 13:00 Why can't players just be normal in Asia? 18:05 Does the tennis season end with a whimper? We gear up for what promises to be a compelling finale at the ATP Beijing (China Open) 2025: Jannik Sinner vs Learner Tien. We break down how both players have navigated their paths to the championship match, examine their strengths and vulnerabilities, and offer our prediction for who will lift the trophy. What We'll Cover: Road to the Final Sinner's form and consistency in Beijing — his 9th straight hard court final and the way he dispatched Alex de Minaur in the semis. Tien's breakout run: how the 19-year-old American earned his place in his first ATP final, including Medvedev's retirement and his “giant killer” reputation this season. Player Profiles & Matchup Breakdown Sinner: elite baseline aggression, experience under pressure, and how he's trying new elements in his game after the U.S. Open. Tien: strengths in second-serve points, guts in deciding sets, and fearless calls in big moments. Tactical keys: who controls the tempo? Can Tien disrupt Sinner's rhythm? How will pressure moments decide things? Prediction & Scoreline Forecast Based on form, odds, and experience, we lean toward Sinner in straight sets as the most probable outcome. But we'll also map out plausible upset scenarios (e.g. if Tien seizes momentum, or Sinner drops concentration). What's at Stake Ranking implications: Sinner looking to close the gap to Alcaraz. Legacy angle: Tien's shot at his first title vs Sinner adding another hard court crown to his season. Tune in for expert insight, tactical talk, and our final verdict on how this final could play out. Will Sinner extend his dominance — or will Tien shock the tennis world? And, Carlitos is now the king, as he and Jannik have a death-grip on men's tennis.
Thanks for your patience as we finished up our US Open wrap! One of our birthdays coincided with Rolex inviting a certain president to the tournament, and we conscientiously objected. Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz are your winners (for the first time together). The tournament was a barnburner on the women's side, a fantastic cap to a year which saw four different Slam winners and a few players rewriting their own stories. On the men's side, Alcaraz faced only 10 break points (a record) and pushed a dominant Sinner into rethinking his own game. As is our wont, we talk extensively about other things … including using Mary Carillo's commentary as an example of the necessary risk of expanding sports commentary into something more worldly and immediate. 01:46 Aryna Sabalenka wins with smarts and steadiness 08:56 Animisova-Osaka, now that was a moment 18:27 The Townsend-Krejcikova match was a stunner 21:31 Mary Carillo and the risk of telling the truth 35:47 Carlos figures out Jannik (7 of the last 8 times) 42:19 Thanks, Rolex! We're kind of winging it for this US Open preview. It's a bit too late for a Cincy recap, so we're talking about major themes -- like Coco's coaching overhaul, Iga's mid-season surge, the guys not named Carlos or Jannik -- and sprinkling in some results. We talk about what worked and what didn't in the mixed doubles exhib-- I mean the prestigious and successful mixed doubles tournament featuring the world's best players. We were live after close of play on a busy day 4 at the Championships. In part 1 we discuss Draper's shock loss to former finalist here Marin Cilic. What does this mean for both of them? How can Draper still improve both on grass and at Wimbledon? And Can Cilic go even further? We also cover Novak Djokovic and Jannik cruising through, as well as an intriguing epic between August Holmgren and Tomas Machac which was notable not only for four tie-break sets out of five, but also some unexpected clothing-rule-related-drama. In part 2 (43m05s) we wrapped up the women's results. Mirra Andreeva held firm despite being tested by Lucia Bronzetti, and defending champion Krejcikova slipped past Dolehide to set up a match with Emma Navarro. Swiatek too made it through; we discuss how her confidence is holding up as she progresses through the draw. And another former champion, Elena Rybakina, is looking strong, swatting away Sakkari with the kind of skills we wish we could employ to dispatch the insects currently plaguing our podcast bench! In part 3 (57m49s) we run through tomorrow's order of play, consider how Alcaraz might fare against Struff, preview Sabalenka-Raducanu, and come to the conclusion that tomorrow, Court 2 is where it's at in terms of excitement, as Fonseca takes on Jarry and Keys plays Siegemund.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop!
