Free Speech Week was just before the election, but Andrew and Jerry engage in a belated celebration. Joined by Patrick Maines, former President and CEO of the Media Institute, they break down the importance of rights to free speech, the erosion of those rights over time, and the challenges to free speech in 2024 and beyond. They talk about Patrick's career, the work of the Media Institute, and those who are championing free speech currently. After Patrick leaves, Andrew and Jerry talk a little more about the subject, and then turn to current events - talking about the nomination of Matt Gaetz for Attorney General (as well as other prominent Trump picks), the predictable caterwauling from the left and Never Trumpers, and why it's important for people to "keep their powder dry".

Americans today are divided on many issues. But one thing almost everyone seems to agree on, from BLM protestors to January 06 demonstrators, is that they have a right to take to the streets in protest. What if this is a mistake? What if there is no right to protest, at least not in the way traditionally understood? And what if this misunderstanding fuels escalating conflicts in America? In this talk, Ghate explores these questions and offers a distinctive account of what forms of public protest are consistent with the principle of individual rights and which are not. This talk was given as part of Free Speech Week at the Salem Center for Policy, The University of Texas at Austin on Thursday, October 21, 2021.

In this episode of Horns of a Dilemma, we listen to a talk by David French, author of Divided We Fall: America’s Secession Threat and How we Restore our Nation. French details the way in which the United States has become increasingly polarized politically, geographically, and culturally, and examines what he considers to be the threat of secession. French makes the case that in order to unite the country, Americans need to find causes and ways of interacting that focus on bringing people together and finding common ground. This discussion was part of the University of Texas’ celebration of Free Speech Week.
Glenn Loury joined the Salem Center for Policy for this discussion during Free Speech Week.

Carmel and Lynae are two twin sisters and Fighters from the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Their journey of getting involved with Fight the New Drug began almost 4 years ago, when they saw a Facebook post from a friend in a red “Porn Kills Love” tee. What started as a mutual interest in our posts on the social network grew into an active following of our blog and other social platforms for both Lynae and Carmel. They made huge waves in their Wisconsin community of La Crosse after a local university paid thousands of dollars to a porn performer to give a talk to students about sex education and porn, intended to help the campus celebrate their Free Speech Week. In response, Lynae and Carmel posted on Facebook wearing their “Porn Kills Love” tees with fellow Fighter friends and talked about how porn harms the consumer, relationships, and society in general. The attention the post received and the wider conversations it sparked were unexpected, but amazing. Hear Carmel and Lynae describe their experiences in spreading awareness of the harms of pornography with podcast host Garrett Jonsson. We are grateful for these two incredible Fighters and their efforts to start a conversation on porn’s harms in their community. It is because of these efforts that Carmel and Lynae were awarded with the 2018 Fighter of the Year award! Think you’ve got what it takes to win it next year? Nominate yourself or a friend for our 2019 Fighter of the Year award for changing the conversation on porn's harms by visiting FTND.org/foty.Click here to access the resources discussed in this episode. Are free speech rights threatened at universities? Is Attorney General Jeff Sessions correct when he says political correctness has run amok on college campuses?Conservatives point to the angry scenes at Middlebury College, where Charles Murray was shouted down, and demonstrations at University of California, Berkeley, which led to the cancelation of Free Speech Week, as alarming examples of intolerance. Liberals push back, saying that protests against neo-Nazis, racism, and those who denigrate other cultures are part of a proud tradition of resistance to hate.In this episode, Richard speaks with Wesleyan University President, Michael Roth, who wrote a recent article for the Wall Street Journal: "The Opening of the Liberal Mind:Affirmative action for the study of conservative ideas."Professor Roth makes a powerful argument in defense of free speech, especially for unpopular views. In the days after controversy erupted over President Trump's scathing criticism of NFL player protests during the national anthem, this debate has special resonance. This episode of FRDH is about Berkeley and the high point of the revolution of the 1960's as host Michael Goldfarb remembers it. Revolution is a romantic word and a bloody practice. This autumn "revolution" will be discussed a lot, as we mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution. The word will also come into use as we move towards the 50th anniversary remembrances of 1968, the year of student revolution. The University of California Berkeley, is where student revolution was effectively born in the US, during the Free Speech Movement. That was a movement of the left. Free Speech Week which may well spark a riot, is a movement of the right and it providing pundits the opportunity to note the irony that Berkeley, home of the Free Speech Movement, has become anti-Free Speech. In this FRDH podcast Goldfarb recounts the story of the Free Speech Movement, the fight over People's Park and recalls a memorable rally on Berkeley campus addressed by Herbert Marcuse and Angela Davis. He then describes a moment of calm in the intensity of the Sixties, a calm that he calls the High Point of the Revolution.
RE Graswich in for John today. Free Speech Week at Berkeley, Nancy Pelosi is shouted down by protesters, and a project that is telling Californians' stories.
Godzilla has landed. Ben Shapiro spoke Thursday night at the University of California-Berkeley. Prior to the young conservative's talk on free speech, local press noted that the university had added major concrete fortifications to handle protestors. In addition, 76 campus faculty members signed a letter urging students to sit out Berkeley's “Free Speech Week” and stay home. Responding to press coverage, Shapiro compared the reaction to his talk as one befitting Godzilla. In truth, Godzilla might have proved less scary than a thoughtful voice promoting the free exchange of ideas.Irony abounds in Berkeley. Violent leftists associated with Antifa do their darndest to supposedly oppose violence. Faculty members who demand that their views be heard show no such fairness to others. But, some students today are still thinking for themselves. They're seeing tolerance play out that is no tolerance at all. Perhaps the next generation is not lost. Let's engage them. Let's make the case for sound principles and permanent things. We'll talk to anyone—even Godzilla.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
President Trump’s reported support for DACA amnesty would allow over 3.5 million illegals to gain citizenship, prompt a flood of chain migration and encourage more illegal immigration.Hillary Clinton’s book tour is reminding everyone just how detached from reality the Democrat presidential nominee and unindicted serial felon truly is.And amid another campus meltdown, Ben Shapiro spoke at Berkeley last night, which gave us a glimpse into the reaction we can expect to the upcoming Free Speech Week.
On this episode the Audio Apes talk about the devastation that Hurricane Harvey has left on the state of Texas. The conversation then pivots to President Trump's decision to pardon controversial figure Sheriff Joe Arpaio which led to a discussion on social profiling as a whole. The Audio Apes then shared a 10 point list of demands for white people written by a Black Lives Matter leader and organizer, Chanelle Helm. Naturally the conversation shifted to Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin's decision to request UC Berkeley on Monday to cancel conservatives' plans for a "Free Speech Week" where they plan to invite right-wing provocateur, Milo Yiannopoulos. This decision coming from the latest situation with Antifa protesters attacking peaceful right-wing protesters. Finally, the Audio Apes' share their thoughts on the Mayweather vs McGregor fight.
