Ski mountaineer Kit DesLauriers skied off the summit of Mount Everest into history. DesLauriers is the first person to ski from the so-called Seven Summits, the highest peak on every continent. Her 2006 descent of Everest capped a string of firsts: She was the first woman to ski the Vinson Massif, the highest mountain in Antarctica, and Mt. Aspiring in New Zealand. She also made the first female solo ski descent of Grand Teton in Wyoming. A two-time Freeskiing World Tour champion, National Geographic named her an Adventurer of the Year in 2015. DesLauriers was formally inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame this week, following her election in 2019.Kit DesLauriers is the mother of two daughters with her husband, Rob DesLauriers, whose family runs the Bolton Valley ski area in Vermont. She is the author of a memoir, Higher Love: Skiing the Seven Summits, which was reissued last year. She is a member of The North Face global athlete team, the board of the Alaska Wilderness League and the riders team of the climate action group Protect Our Winters. I spoke with her from her home in Jackson, Wyoming.
Welcome back to the Next Level Skiing podcast, brought to you by Wagner Skis. Thinking through the fear with Julian Carr. One of the great things about skiing is that we can apply the lessons we've learned on snow and adapt them to our whole life. Today is no exception. Julian talks about how he gets air, how he got started, and what goes into finding the right conditions. As a natural talent, Julian has a unique and positive perspective on both skiing and life. We've all seen the pictures. X-Games GOLD Medalist Julian Carr is known as one of the skiers who gets the biggest air. It's almost as if he's out there to prove that flying and skiing aren't two different things. Julian's lofty exploits have landed him in Warren Miller films. He's also received “Photo of the Year” from Powder Magazine, the Sickbird Award on the Freeskiing World Tour, and holds two world records in cliff jumps. He's an ambassador for Protect Our Winters and Climate Reality Project. He's also a board member for the Lands Conservation Foundation. He founded Discrete Clothing. He also founded the Cirque Series, which is a mountain running series that's in its fourth season. Do you ever look at someone and think, “Wow, they're FEARLESS?!” I feel like that word is used a lot to describe people in the public eye, whether it's a professional athlete or a musician or anyone else you see as you scroll through Instagram. And obviously to be fearless, you must have NO fear. So that must mean those pro skiers dropping CLIFFS aren't afraid of anything bad happening in that moment... Right? WRONG. Anyone that I've talked to that appears fearless on the outside, actually does have some fear on the inside. They just know how to manage it, how to talk to it, and they know that it's not a bad thing. Fear and anxiety have a purpose for us humans - we just have to learn how to listen to them.Meet professional freeskier Angel Collinson - someone who, if you've seen what she does, you might think she's fearless. And yes, she is EXTREMELY BRAVE, but she does have fear, just like the rest of us humans. But she 's close with her fear, and knows how to listen to it.You may have seen her slashing steep spines on huge mountains in ski movies from Teton Gravity Research, or seen her in the Freeskiing World Tour, which she has won TWICE. She's won awards for her skiing on film too - like when she was the first woman ever to win Best Line at the Powder Video Awards.I loved talking to Angel about fear, anxiety, meditation, and how the heck we can listen to our gut.You can keep up with Mentally Together on Instagram @mentallytogetherpod. In this week's episode big air skier, X Game gold medalist, and entrepreneur, Julian Carr, let's us pick his brain. Move over Air Jordan because “Air Julian” goes WAY bigger and the stakes are life or death. Clip in as he teaches all of us how we can push past fear - something he knows all about considering he makes a living skiing off 200+ foot cliffs. On top of his incredible extreme sports career which includes several world records, an X Games gold medal, seven Warren Miller films, and countless magazine covers, Julian is also an advocate for climate change and he shares some easy ways we can all do our part to help. When the snow stops flying Julian still finds himself in the mountains and he shares his battle to keep his alpine running race series alive this year during a pandemic. Julian Carr holds multiple world records for ski cliff drops. He has successfully executed 100+ foot drops over a dozen times and walked away without a scratch. This conversation dives into the fact that he is not an “adrenaline junkie”. His approach is one of being grateful, present and working through fear. By “dissecting fear” Julien has been able to achieve moments of connection with himself and his surroundings that make the impossible – possible. John Collinson is a big mountain freeskier whose accomplishments in the sport have earned him multiple podiums on the Freeskiing World Tour and awards for his frequent appearances in Red Bull and Teton Gravity Research films. Equally skilled in the tricks and style of free skiing and in the speed and scale of big mountain skiing, Johnny is known for his versatility and range. In this conversation, he and Payson talk about how a recent knee injury has helped him discover an affinity for a whole new kind of athletic achievement, how diet influences his training, and why he chooses diversity in rehab workouts over specifics. While Johnny is primarily known for his abilities going down mountains, his accomplishments going up them gained him widespread public attention in his early years. He tells Payson about his mountaineering career, which dates back over decades when he climbed including what it was like to climb Mount Rainier at age four, how he became the youngest person ever to climb the Seven Summits at the age of 17, and why he's glad he never got sponsored for it. They also talk about his childhood traveling around the mountains in the west with his parents and older sister Angel in a '79 Ford Econoline van, and how an unfortunate incident with a piece of cheese led to some youthful innovations in the disposal of unwanted food on family hikes.
Angel Collinson is one of the most accomplished big mountain freestyle skiers in the world. Throughout her career, she's won two championship titles at the Freeskiing World Tour, and was the first woman to be awarded Best Line at the Powder Video Awards in 2016. Angel is perhaps best known for her many appearances in Teton Gravity Research's (TGR) annual ski films, which have featured some of her most spectacular and daring runs. When Payson interviewed Angel last week at Red Bull headquarters, she was still recovering from a thousand foot tumble down an Alaskan mountain that led to a second knee surgery and extensive rehab. In this conversation, they discuss her injury, how she has maintained her legendary positivity throughout the lengthy recovery process, her close relationship with brother and fellow professional skier John Collinson, and how leaving a promising academic career in Environmental Law to pursue skiing gave her an even more powerful voice as a lobbyist for environmental change in Washington and beyond. They also go in depth on Angel's complex feelings about the post-#MeToo era and how she thinks the pendulum might have swung too far. And just in case the conversation was in danger of getting a little too serious, Angel tells the story of when her dad lowered her headfirst into an outhouse toilet by the ankles.
An Olympic ski racer on the art of being deliberate in choices and living without regret. Oh, do I have a fun conversation to start off your new year today. Kaylin Richardson is a ten-year U.S. Ski Team veteran, 2-time Olympian (Torino 06' and Vancouver 10'), and four-time National Alpine Champion. After retiring from the World Cup in 2010, Kaylin fell even deeper in love with the sport when she discovered backcountry skiing. As a reincarnated big-mountain skier, in addition to winning the Freeskiing World Tour's North American Championship in 2012, Kaylin has been featured in seven Warren Miller films, including this year's Face of Winter. Kaylin has also expanded her expertise as a writer, speaker, commentator, and television personality on VH1, NBC Sports, and as the Olympic Special Correspondent for The Weather Channel. She is an all-around badass at skiing and at life. She was a blast to talk to and I specifically saved this as a perfect thing to listen to as we all set new goals and new benchmarks for the new year. Once we establish our mutual joy in skiing, we talked a lot about her racing career and the difference it takes to race in the top tier - what the mental edge really looks like. And it’s interesting because she did race in the top tier but, as an example, she didn’t medal in the Olympics. Did she fall short of her potential or was she meant to go on and do other things? Kaylin’s ability to be deliberate in her choices, and not dwell on regrets has led her into a variety of endeavors before she landed herself in the Warren Miller ski films and as she said, she had no idea life could get better after her US Ski team career. My takeaways on this one - be kinder to yourself as you set goals, and have faith the most exciting stuff is yet to come. Kim Vinet is a skier, an earth scientist and a public speaker. As we enter the crazy holidays here in the U.S., I hope this episode will serve as a reminder to value what matters. Kim lives in Revelstoke, BC with her husband and two dogs. She is a sponsored athlete and competitive freerider on the Freeride World Tour Qualifying series (formerly the Freeskiing World Tour). This love of skiing and the outdoors has driven her on an exploration of the hypocrisy of loving the outdoors, possibly to death and it has driven her into a lifelong career in sustainability. She hold a B.Sc. Hons. degree in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Western Ontario. Following graduation, her specialization in Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy led her to Calgary, AB to apply her skills to petroleum exploration. (We’ll talk about this) Never feeling especially comfortable with the environmental impact of petroleum production, she turned to regulatory compliance work and project management. This experience created a solid foundation for understanding energy markets and government policy. Kim, like many guests on this podcast, rejected social conventions and the traditional way of making a living when she left her high paying job (and it’s resulting lifestyle) to lead a more conscious existence in Revelstoke So, we have a lot to explore and tease out of that story - things like: How to follow your heart and take that big leap. Overcoming uncertainty along the way. How to cut your carbon footprint and as we enter the holiday season, to be more conscious about the things we buy. The joy in living a simpler life with fewer things. She had quite the circuitous path to get to where she is now and for those of us who are in the middle of our own crazy, seemingly directionless path, maybe you’ll find some inspiration in the fact that it somehow all comes together and works out in the end. Enough of that - let’s listen in and gear up for what’s next. Academy of Skiing Creator and Today's Co-Host: I had the honor of meeting this episodes co-host, in person at this years, 2017 THRIVE: Make Money Matter event. We can thank our mutual connection with one of the event's sponsors, The Billion Dollar Body community. Enough about our event networking, let's learn about today's co-host! I've been skiing since the age of 2 and haven’t looked back since. At the age of 6, I was skiing competitively, racing for Eldora Mountain Ski Club and then Rowmark Ski Academy, until I graduated high school. Skiing, Photography, Adventure, Passion, Culture. - Scot Chrisman I hung up my skis and gave up my prospects for the US Olympic Ski Team in an attempt to take a break from skiing and live a normal life. But the mountains kept calling to me and I had to answer. It wasn't long before I was out on the slopes with the wind in my face and the snow under my skis once more. After almost two years of coaching ski racing in college, Big Mountain competitions stole me from my studies and led me on the path I’ve been skiing along for the past 7 years. I've chased the Freeskiing World Tour around the globe while living out of my car and sleeping on couches and in hotel rooms. I've learned more about skiing and the ski community on the road than I ever could have from skiing at home. For 2 seasons the road was my home; I was filming, meeting like-minded people, and shredding Montana, Idaho, California, Utah, Washington, Oregon, Canada, Alaska, and Chile. I ended up in Crested Butte in 2012 for a competition and the valley stole my heart. After some exploration, I decided I was moving to CB. I’ve been nestled in the mountains for the past years continuing my pursuits of skiing and competing. I am committed to sustainability and mindfulness, determined to battle climate change and better the world through skiing. You have to trust that if you are paying attention to the right things and your heart is in the right place and you’re taking the right steps forward, that you’ll be met halfway with the unforeseen unknown components that are the other half of things progressing forward….you can’t have too much fear about not knowing what the next step is, you just have to trust…. Angel Collinson I've spent a lot of time riding alongside Angel across the country, and every conversation we've had has been a powerful one (whether it's serious or not). Angel skis fast, but her accomplishments extend beyond the mountains that she plays in. She is kind, always thinking, and at the end of the day still loves to have a good time. In this cast, we talk face to face about why she skis, what she wants to do with her life, her fears and hopes, and why being a nice, kind person is the ultimate. Bio: Angel was born July 13th 1990 and grew up in the employee housing at the Snowbird Ski Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon Utah where she and her brother shared a five by twelve foot bedroom. Her dad worked for the snow safety department and her mom made their lifestyle possible by teaching in a one-room home school every winter, teaching kindergarten through high school to Angel, her brother Johnny and a few other kids. "Snow days" were "powder days” and as a result, ignited Angel’s passion for skiing. In the summers her family traveled for months and explored the mountains around the west. They lived out of a 1979 blue ford van that they renovated to make a "luxurious" home, which became their mobile summer base camp until she turned 14. Angel ski raced until she was 18, and enjoyed a successful career of competing internationally. Eventually her enthusiasm for big mountain skiing got the best of her. Her love for the mountains and being outside was instilled when she was young, and growing up in nature inspired her to protect what has given her so much. Currently she attends the University of Utah, studying environmental law and competes on the Freeskiing World Tour. In the summer she looks for every way to maximize her time outdoors – she rock climbs, kayaks, and even serves as a raft guide in Glacier National Park. For the passions she has Angel couldn't imagine living anywhere better than Snowbird, and she looks forward to the experiences that being part of the amazing big mountain community brings.
