Send us a textIn this episode we talk with big mountain skier (and gravel/mountain/road cyclist, runner, physical trainer):The evolution of nutrition on long days in the mountainsGetting into gravel cyclingHis approach to eating enough to fuel adventuresWhy strength is important for all athletesJohn Collinson grew up on the hill at Snowbird Ski Resort with his sister, Angel. Their dad worked in the snow safety department, so the pair was skiing and understanding the mountains from a very young age. John's mom homeschooled them in winter, allowing them to spend more time on skis. At 17, John won the Junior Freeskiing World tour, and the same year became the youngest person to climb the seven summits: the highest peak on each continent, and he did it in a year. After that he knew skiing had to be a part of his life, and kept competing on the Freeskiing circuit, as well as started a career filming with Sherpas Cinema. He then started filming with Teton Gravity Research & Matchstick Productions. From 2018-2022, John had a string of knee injuries, which led him down a road of discovery and learning about the human body. Showing his recoveries online inspired a new tangent to his career, offering online workout programs, as well as working as an in-person physical trainer. He's found another passion in helping people move and feel better through exercise. Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/editorialtpv El día de hoy hablaremos sobre el movimiento puritano, de acuerdo capítulo 1, "Antipuritanism” por Patrick Collinson del libro The Cambridge Companion to Puritanism. Imitate Christ's Humility - Philippians 1:27-2:11 - Sue Collinson - 14th July 2024 by Christ Church Winchester
Imagine you've made it. You and your friends have hit the big time in music and you're going to be a star. But then, quite suddenly, it's over. Your best friends don't want you anymore, and you're on the outside. Perhaps they're tired of your bad habits, they think you're not good enough, or they sense you just don't want it as much as they do. Whatever the cause, you're a reject. So, what do you do next?Featuring a player rejected by both Nirvana and Soundgarden who became a decorated special forces soldier, Britpoppers who spiralled into addiction before becoming novelists and missionaries, the terrifying story of Guns N' Roses' first drummer, super-rejecting band leaders, self-destroying rappers, troubled hard rock bassists and girl-band burnouts, The Rejects takes an intimate, thoughtful look at people who've been kicked out of bands, what they experienced and what came afterwards.Coming from a writer with twenty years' music industry experience, The Rejects is a sympathetic study of some of music's most fascinating characters, and what happens when the dream comes crashing to an end. The result is a compelling alternative history of popular music.Jamie Collinson has worked in the music business for over twenty years, primarily for two iconic independent record labels; Ninja Tune and Domino. Having worked with Arctic Monkeys, My Bloody Valentine, Franz Ferdinand, Wiley, Wet Leg and Roots Manuva, he's lived in London and Los Angeles, where he founded Ninja Tune's US HQ. He's been backstage at some of the world's most famous venues and festivals in the company of the artists he's worked with, navigated colourful characters, A & R'd albums and directed marketing campaigns to sell them. Along the way, he's seen success and failure, heartbreak, joy, addiction, violence, terrifying egoism and stunning generosity. Throughout it all he's done a lot of writing, including journalism for the Guardian, Spectator, Evening Standard and many music magazines. He published a novel, The Edge, with Oneworld Publications in 2020.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://www.wellingtonsquarebooks.com/book/9781408717967

Creation: The Sequel - Genesis 2:4-7 - Sue Collinson - 22nd April 2024 (11:00) by Christ Church Winchester
In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I am joined by Catherine Collinson, president and CEO of the nonprofit research foundation Transamerica Institute, to discuss the crucial role older workers can play in filling in-demand roles across the economy and how ageism may be standing in the way of tapping into that talent pool. "Ageism should be something in the past, not in the present. It's time to get over it," says Collinson, especially as employers express an inability to "attract and retain talent, as they're looking to grow their businesses. It is negatively impacting their ability to conduct business." A new report from Transamerica Institute and its Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies released this morning – Workplace Transformations: Employer Business Practices and Benefit Offerings – says employers are feeling the impact of a prolonged labor crunch. Thirty-seven percent (37%) say it is negatively impacting them. For larger employers, the number is much higher. It goes to six, even seven, in 10. There are four – some even say five – generations of workers in the labor force now. Midcareer and older workers are making up a bigger share each year. Since 1987, the share of workers aged 65 or older has grown from a little more than one in ten (11%) to almost one in five (19%). Currently, about 30% of the U.S. labor forces is over the age of 55. While these workers want or need to continue working, they are often overlooked when it comes to opportunities to "skill up" to do the jobs that employers say they having trouble filling, explains Collinson. "Our survey found almost nine in 10 employers feel that they are age-friendly and provide opportunities, resources, and training for workers of all ages to be successful. But when we looked a little bit further, we found not so much, especially as it relates to attracting and retaining talent. "Very few said they gave a great deal of consideration to age 50+ job applicants. Even some of the things that we saw in terms of professional development opportunities – which, by the way, they could be doing a lot more for workers of all ages – they just seem to be not yet tuned into that opportunity. "Employers on one hand are contending with labor crunches, and yet they're missing out on this talent pool that has expertise, experience, wisdom, that wants to work. Why are they not paying closer attention? That's a rhetorical question, but it also leads to that we've got to retire ageism." Collinson and I go on to discuss ways in which employers can attract workers of all ages and the benefits of a multigenerational workforce. We also discuss the impact of employers using artificial intelligence to "augment their human workforce." In Collinson's words, "Robotics and artificial intelligence may be revolutionizing the business world, but human workers are still critically needed." Matt Collinson delivers a message on liturgy through the example of communion. Liturgy (a form according to which public religious worship, especially Christian worship, is conducted) calls us into an active expression of faith and to imitate Christ in our lives. Liturgy unites us around the world as Christians. The act of breaking bread and lifting a cup is universal and unites the body of Christ across time and space. It's an enduring tradition that connects us through the history of the church. Early Christians all sat at the same table and ate the same food. The church was meant to be a place where people could meet God together. Everyone needs it and everyone gets it and that's a powerful analogy of God's grace and we embody that when we receive these tangible elements. God's love is open and welcome to all.
In this episode, Georgie takes you out of your usual thinking patterns into a new perspective on life, on yourself and what's possible for you. Please note this episode was recorded in August 2023. Today I'm joined by Alexandra Collinson, a third year PhD student at Newcastle University studying eighteenth-century literature. We'll be talking about her project, The Sex Workers' Revolution: Prostitution and Feminism in Women's writing, 1787-1801, and more broadly about women, sex work, virtue and motherhood in eighteeth century England and Ireland. Alex's PhD project asserts that revolutionary feminists such as Marie-Madeleine Jodin and Mary Wollstonecraft, were not the only female writers to intervene in the patriarchal domain of late eighteenth-century politics. Her research shows that sex workers like Margaret Leeson and Ann Sheldon also made important contributions to feminist discourses on women's nature and social roles in memoirs and legal testimonies published throughout the period. Alex's other research interests include women's life writing, and representations of sexuality, maternity, and prostitution in eighteenth-century literature. Her PhD project is funded by a Arts and Humanities Research Council Northern Bridge Studentship. An accomplished mountaineer, Johnny Collinson is rightfully recognized as one of the world's very best big-mountain freeskiers. In the summers, he and his family – including older sister, Angel, also a pro skier – would climb peaks all over the west, with Johnny summiting Mount Rainier at age 4 and soon knocking off other iconic peaks like Mount Whitney, Mount Hood and Mount Shasta. In this episode, Georgie shares a personal life update on her experiences in Byron Bay and what's coming next, while also telling a story of learning to live in an environment of daily danger. Life in Australia, especially on the Central East Coast, is about living amongst poisonous snakes that are deadly to humans and pythons that want to eat your pets. Is there something about snakes that we are misunderstanding? Is there something in fear that can be further explored? Is there a gift here we've been blinded to, hidden in the mystery?
