We're bringing back an episode that we believe deserves a second listen.
In this episode, I sit down with four-time Olympian Emma Carrick-Anderson for a powerful conversation about skiing, parenting, and coaching at the elite level. Emma shares how her philosophy has shifted from the traditional, form-focused training she experienced as an athlete to a more exploratory, feel-based approach—one that she and her husband, Phil Smith, used to raise their children who are now knocking on the door of the World Cup circuit. We talk about: • Why developing feel and versatility on the mountain trumps chasing a perfect-looking turn • How Emma's Olympic background shapes her parenting and coaching • Equipment insights, including the flatter vs. supportive footbed debate • Practical takeaways for parents, coaches, and everyday skiersWhether you're raising young skiers, coaching others, or simply looking to improve your own skiing, Emma's experience and insight offer something valuable.Links Mentioned: • Previous episode with Phil Smith – https://youtu.be/-7xcCHbiEcA?si=UaAzgJhLtuFalmH7 • Follow the boys at Team Carrick-Smith on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/teamcarricksmith?igsh=MTZqOTdlZ2ZrZ3Vzaw== • Learn more at Big Picture Skiing - https://bigpictureskiing.com/catalogAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this motivational podcast, world-champion skier Lindsey Vonn says that there are some serious trials facing US ski racing, including how it treats its athletes. She wants to help with the recruitment of young talent, but acknowledges that funding may be a difficult hurdle. Vonn also talks about her challenging relationship with fellow skiing phenom Mikaela Shiffrin. Vonn criticizes Shiffrin's leadership style, and questions Outside Magazine's claim that Shiffrin is the world's greatest.
River Radamus is a rising star on the U.S. Alpine Ski Team. But first and foremost, River is someone who is very, very passionate about all types of skiing. Send us a textIn this episode Nicole and Sarah welcome ski mom Isabelle Winkles. Isabel is the CFO of a software company, and also an alpine race team coach at Mohawk Mountain in Connecticut. Isabel got involved in coaching after encouragement from other parents, despite not having extensive racing experience herself as a child. Isabelle discusses the progression of ski programming for kids, from learn to ski to development teams and competitive alpine race teams. Isabelle notes that equipment needs and costs increase as children advance, but emphasizes the importance of finding hand-me-downs and used gear through team networks. For Isabelle, coaching has provided dedicated time with her own children while allowing her to stay active and involved in a sport she's passionate about. For Isabel's family, typical apres-ski activities include hot tubs, snacks, and early bedtimes for tired kids. In this episode we talk to the heroes at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya who rescue orphaned baby elephants, raising them until they can return to the wild. They tell us all about a special baby elephant named Toto. We're also joined by musician, historian, and creator of the Brooklyn Folk Festival, Eli Smith. He talks about his life in folk music, plays us the same song on two very different banjos, and explains the competition he invented that involves tossing banjos into Brooklyn's murky Gowanus Canal (if you have an iPhone or Apple device, be sure to check out his banjo toss video game). Next we hit the slopes with Ariana and learn about the history, hard work, and thrill of ski racing in Vermont. We also get a report from our on-the-ground correspondent Nola, who walks us through the city of New Orleans with all its special flavors and sounds. Not to be outdone, Bobby the Bigfoot returns to chat with Evan and (try to) play a banjo. Plus, we have our usual favorite sounds, jokes, riddles, and general hijinks. There is the potential for an age-limit rule change in NCAA skiing. So I got three veterans of the American ski racing world to help talk through it, and we ended up discussing far more than that. We briefly walked through the history of college ski racing in the US, then we talked about statistics, average ages, the international wave of skiers, the proposed age-limit rule, the balance between the U.S. Ski Team pipeline and college, the former U.S. University Team, high school post-graduate years, the difficulty of college race courses, supplementing training in the off-season, and more. Woof. I had three guests who helped navigate it all smoothly: Edie Morgan, a two-time Olympian and forefront American alpine journalist; Pete Dodge, former accomplished ski racer and Dartmouth College head coach for 33 years; and Aldo Radamus, formerly a World Cup head coach, Director of US Development, Director of SSCV, and is now currently Director at Team Summit Colorado. Besides some minor dustings, it hasn't snowed significantly in the French resorts hosting the skiing world championships since mid-January. And there is no snow in the long-term forecast. Instead, the weather has been perfectly clear, sunny and, yes — cold. But a warm front was slated to move in over the posh towns of Courchevel and Meribel in early February, and temperatures were expected to soar well above freezing and start melting the perfectly shaped racing surfaces that organizers have prepared with mostly artificial snow. Dealing with warm temperatures and a lack of snow has been a constant this season across the Alps for the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, known as FIS, with Mother Nature and global warming having just as much say about when and where to hold races as the sport's governing body. Warm weather and a lack of snow wiped out nearly a month of racing at the start of this season, preseason training on melting European glaciers is heading toward extinction and the impact of climate change on the schedule is being seen even in January. “There's a very real threat to what we know and love from winter,” American skiing standout Mikaela Shiffrin said. “We get really caught up in our world and the medals and wins and victories and records and everything. But what we hope is to be able to enjoy skiing and winter sports and winter recreation for many, many years to come. And that's under threat right now.” For nearly three decades, the FIS has started the World Cup season in late October with a weekend of racing atop the Rettenbach glacier in Soelden, Austria. The idea is not only to draw attention to the racing circuit but also to encourage spectators and consumers to start thinking about reserving their winter vacations and start buying skis, boots and other equipment. The entire skiing industry in Europe relies on the race to boost sales. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Who is a leader in your life that you look up to?Today, I'm talking to a teammate who has been there for me through it all, Marie-Michele Gagnon. She has been racing on the World Cup circuit for nearly 15 years and has represented Canada in the 2010 Vancouver, 2014 Sochi Winter Games, and 2022 Beijing Olympics. Marie-Michele has stood on the podium five times throughout her World Cup career in 3 different events. Elite athletes, especially in ski racing, often get put in boxes of whatever event they initially find success in. It can be extremely intimidating to branch out into new events when you have built your personal “athlete brand identity”. However, at the end of the day, you are the competitor and you should follow your heart, no matter where it takes you in the sport.Tune in and listen to episode 2 of season 2 of Unspoken Bravery. Marie-Michele and I talk about her incredibly impressive career, how she finds happiness despite whatever situation life throws at her, ways that she has learned to increase her self-confidence, toe-ing the line of selfishness when competing as an individual and on a team, and so much more.In this episode, you will learn:What bravery means to Marie-Michele (4:45)How speed skiing was different for Marie-Michele (16:54)A story that displays Marie-Michele's drive and work ethic perfectly (29:32)How Marie-Michele harnesses her confidence (33:18)Navigating competing as an individual and as a team (44:40)A time when Marie-Michele was brave that no one saw (1:04:58)Connect with Marie-Michele GagnonWebsiteInstagramLet's Connect!InstagramFacebookErinMielzynski.com Hosted on Acast. Guest Lara Fowler had been a cross-country ski racer and studied Japanese in high school in Portland, Oregon. She took those two pursuits to college and pursued them to their highest. With all of the language requirements and a study abroad program that she wanted to undertake, she had nearly completed a major in Asian Studies. But she also had a long-standing interest in water. So in fulfilling her distribution requirements, she found ways to study water from multiple angles, did off-campus research in the topic, and ultimately won a senior fellowship to devote her final year to writing a book on water policy, in effect creating her own second major in water resource management. After graduation, she took a year to pursue ski racing but decided to hang up the skiis and get a job in the water world. Recognizing that much of the discourse around water intersected with the law, she went to law school and ultimately worked as a water mediator, bringing disparate voices together to find solutions in water allocation. When her husband got the academic job he had long wanted, she found a new way to apply her skills and spark new interests. In this episode, find out from Lara how keeping curiosity alive and being willing to ask questions helps you move from novice to expert…on Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestLara Fowler is an attorney and mediator who focuses on environmental, energy, and natural resource law, with a specific focus on water-related issues. She has a joint appointment at Penn State Law where she teaches natural resource law and negotiations and the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment where she is working on questions related to water, the Chesapeake Bay, and systems-level behavioral change.
