Today, Angel Collinson and Jonathan discuss an experience that every single one of us will deal with at some point in our lives: grief. It's a topic that we don't talk much about in outdoor media circles — how to process it, how best to help others who are grieving, etc. And yet, for reasons that are rather painfully obvious to the outdoor community, we clearly need to.TOPICS & TIMES: Why We're Talking about Grief (4:46)Defining Grief (7:34)Why Now? She was one of the world's best big-mountain freeskiers—and then, suddenly, she decided she was done. Angel Collinson's announcement shocked the sport and left fans wondering what was going on. The fact that she'd started living full-time on a sailboat with her partner, and without and solid plans for what was next, only made people more curious. As Collinson, 29, tells it, after more than a decade of ripping down insanely steep slopes, trying to “make friends" with her fear, she began to question whether the thrill-seeking habit she'd fallen in love was actually good for her. Joy is...Freedom.Angel Collinson made her name snaking improbable lines down the sheerest mountain faces in her career as a big mountain skier. In that time, she racked up nearly every accolade possible: not only world titles, but also magazine covers and starring roles in adventure movies that would typically go to men. In 2021, however, she turned her back on her professional career and instead jumped on a 40-foot sailboat named Sea Bear to embark on a trans-Atlantic crossing. She has overcome a lot of mountains in her life, both on and off the ski slopes, but this latest plunge into the unknown has taken new levels of courage.I connected with Angel upon her return to Sea Bear, after a period of reflective time on land. We shared a free-flowing space in which we explored ideas around embodiment, identity and the wild unknown. Angel reached out with a full and open heart, and I am so grateful for her emotional generosity as she navigates this 'one precious life'.Follow: @angelcollinsonImage: Pete Willauer Hosted on Acast. A little over a year ago, Angel Collinson turned the freeskiing world upside down, when, at the height of her career, she retired from professional skiing. Not only did she stop skiing at age 31—she swapped big mountains for big water and now lives aboard a sailboat. We caught up with Angel while she was in Panama prepping “Sea Bear” for its next adventure. She spoke with us about the similarities—and differences—between the backcountry and big water, what it takes to master one's craft (and whether it's worth it), and if—or when—she'll ski again. #339. I first talked to pro skier-turned-sailor Angel Collinson in the fall of 2020 before she ever set out on an offshore passage. About a year later, I caught up with her and Pete aboard their steel sloop SEABEAR in the Canary Islands, after they'd done their first major ocean crossing. We talked about Pete's lifelong history as a sailor, how he and Angel met in the officers of Teton Gravity Research in Jackson Hole, why they're both such great huggers and how Angel's sailing career is evolving in real-time, just as she's officially announced her retirement from skiing. -- ON THE WIND is presented by Forbes Yachts. Do you ever look at someone and think, “Wow, they're FEARLESS?!” I feel like that word is used a lot to describe people in the public eye, whether it's a professional athlete or a musician or anyone else you see as you scroll through Instagram. And obviously to be fearless, you must have NO fear. So that must mean those pro skiers dropping CLIFFS aren't afraid of anything bad happening in that moment... Right? WRONG. Anyone that I've talked to that appears fearless on the outside, actually does have some fear on the inside. They just know how to manage it, how to talk to it, and they know that it's not a bad thing. Fear and anxiety have a purpose for us humans - we just have to learn how to listen to them.Meet professional freeskier Angel Collinson - someone who, if you've seen what she does, you might think she's fearless. And yes, she is EXTREMELY BRAVE, but she does have fear, just like the rest of us humans. But she 's close with her fear, and knows how to listen to it.You may have seen her slashing steep spines on huge mountains in ski movies from Teton Gravity Research, or seen her in the Freeskiing World Tour, which she has won TWICE. She's won awards for her skiing on film too - like when she was the first woman ever to win Best Line at the Powder Video Awards.I loved talking to Angel about fear, anxiety, meditation, and how the heck we can listen to our gut.You can keep up with Mentally Together on Instagram @mentallytogetherpod. My guest today is a total badass. She is most commonly known for her extreme skiing exploits in the mountains of Alaska, but to call her a skier would be like calling the earth a rock. Angel Collinson is a life ninja. A true force with the desire to rewrite the rules of life and the passion to see it through. Her vision for picking out ski lines is far outmatched by her vision for life. We talked about meditation, life, death, fear, mental health, climate and of course skiing. Honestly, this conversation could have continued for hours, and I look forward to my next conversation with Angel. Please welcome, today's Ace, Angel Collinson.
Angel Collinson is a pro free skier who comes from a family of pro skiers. She grew up at Snowbird Resort in Utah where her parents were professional ski patrollers. Even her brother John is a pro freakier. You can see them both in Teton Gravity Research films, among other places. Angel is new to sailing but recently bought a steel boat in Maine her and her boyfriend are outfitting for long-term cruising. Angel & I had a long and insightful conversation on managing fear, how backcountry skiing and offshore sailing are related, when to trust your gut instinct, mental health and lots more. -- The QUARTERDECK is now open! Coping with Rapidly Changing, Challenging Conditions! Big mountain climber and Alpenglow Expeditions founder Adrian Ballinger, professional rock climber Emily Harrington, ski mountaineer and activist Caroline Gleich, and pro skier Angel Collinson discuss the adventurer’s perspective on coping with rapidly changing, challenging conditions as it relates to the outdoors and the world as of 2020. This is a replay from the Stoked From Home online summit by The Stokecast. Hosted by Jonathan Ronzio and Emily Holland. (Watch the episode at youtube.com/c/jonathanronzio)
Angel Collinson is one of the most accomplished big mountain freestyle skiers in the world. Throughout her career, she's won two championship titles at the Freeskiing World Tour, and was the first woman to be awarded Best Line at the Powder Video Awards in 2016. Angel is perhaps best known for her many appearances in Teton Gravity Research's (TGR) annual ski films, which have featured some of her most spectacular and daring runs. When Payson interviewed Angel last week at Red Bull headquarters, she was still recovering from a thousand foot tumble down an Alaskan mountain that led to a second knee surgery and extensive rehab. In this conversation, they discuss her injury, how she has maintained her legendary positivity throughout the lengthy recovery process, her close relationship with brother and fellow professional skier John Collinson, and how leaving a promising academic career in Environmental Law to pursue skiing gave her an even more powerful voice as a lobbyist for environmental change in Washington and beyond. They also go in depth on Angel's complex feelings about the post-#MeToo era and how she thinks the pendulum might have swung too far. And just in case the conversation was in danger of getting a little too serious, Angel tells the story of when her dad lowered her headfirst into an outhouse toilet by the ankles.
29-year old Professional big mountain skier Angel Collinson has shattered industry ceilings since she hit the scene. The first female skier to land both the opening and finale segments in a TGR film and the first woman to win Powder Magazine's "Best Line" award. Raised on the slopes of Alta ski area in Utah's Little Cottonwood Canyon, her and her brother Johnny (also a professional skier on The North Face athlete team) spent their youth splitting time between ski resort employee housing and living out of a van chasing backcountry adventures for family fun. In this episode we talk all things skiing and stoke of course, Angel's sibling dynamic in the professional sphere, as well as how to overcome your own worst critic—yourself. There are climate advocates everywhere including in sports, the circus, and in mermaid drag. Peterson Toscano of Citizens Climate Radio talks with Lew Blaustein of Green Sports Blog, Brewers pitcher Brent Sutter of Strike Out Waste, Eliana Dunlap of the Circus Action Network, Angel Collinson of ProtectOurWinters.org
Lew Blaustien, editor of Green Sports Blog, is very concerned about climate change. A sports nut since childhood, Lew began a career in sportscasting, and eventually settled into the marketing side of professional sports. There was nothing in his background to suggest he would turn into a passionate climate advocate. The 911 attacks on New York City in 2001 though changed everything for him. You will hear about how that traumatic event set him on a new career path. Lew puts the challenges we face into perspective. He says, “Mike Trout of the Anaheim Angels—best player in baseball—recently signed a 400 plus million dollar twelve year contract extension. Twelve years is also what the IPCC said is the time frame that humanity has to reduce our carbon footprint by 45%—basically Mike Trout’s contract.” Lew believes sports fans can become instrumental in taking on climate change. “We need to get the masses of people who follow sports...to engage on positive climate action.” In this lively interview you will hear Lew brimming with enthusiasm as he reveals a growing trend in the professional sports world. More and more athletes, teams, and leagues are working hard to address environmental concerns. You will also hear from professional skier, Angel Collinson. Through Protect Our Winters she has been speaking to members of congress. In speaking with lawmakers and how many are concerned about climate change, she has become more determined than ever to speak out about the issue. Inspired by athletes like Angel Collinson and Milwaukee Brewers pitcher, Brent Suter, who we featured on Episode 37, Lew and other in the green sports movement are urging teams and players to take the next step—speak directly about climate change and endorse the policies that will address our dangerous pollution problems. The Art House Poet liz gonzález joins us in the Art House. Her background is important to her work. She describes herself as “a fourth generation Southern Californian on my mother’s side and the daughter of a Mexican immigrant father who died when I was three.” A teacher of creative writing through the UCLA Extension Writers Program, liz writes poetry and creative non-fiction. Through her writing liz captures the beauty and the challenges of a rapidly changing landscape. For the Art House she reads from her book, Dancing in the Santa Ana Winds: Poems y Cuentos New and Selected. She explains how the power of the Santa Ana winds serves as a metaphor for the early years of liz’ marriage. She also reads a poem from the anthology, Fire and Rain: Ecopoetry of California. Though she is very passionate about the suffering that comes from pollution and climate change, liz reveals how difficult it is for her to write about social justice issues. “It has to just happen naturally. I can’t sit down and decide I want to write it. It always ends up sounding preachy, and there are people who do it so much better.” Experience the natural beauty liz recreates in her writing and learn about some of the challenges artists like liz face in a time of climate change. Puzzler For last month’s puzzler we asked listeners to share with us the colors and sounds they associate with climate change. New Puzzler Question On Facebook you reconnected with a childhood friend, Lydia. She has become worried about climate change and is wondering about what she can do right now to prepare for the effects of climate change. While she admires your work in mitigating climate change, she feels a growing interest in adaptation. Lydia asks you, “What are ways I can help my community to get ready for climate change?” This is a big question and hopefully the beginning of a larger discussion about climate adaptation. What are some ideas you have for Lydia? Where might she start in adapting to climate change? You’re welcome to answer either or both. Tune in to hear important insights from Angel and how to take your skiing to the next level. Topics: [02:10] Angel was bred into skiing by growing up at Snowbird Ski Resort. Angel Collinson was born into the ski world. She grew up in Snowbird employee housing, where she honed her race skills enough to barely not make the US Ski Team. With racing over, college and big mountain skiing competitions took over. Skiing won. Over the years there have been a lot of women who have pushed the envelope on snow but Angel transcends gender….she’s just a bad ass skier who charges harder than anyone these past few years…guy or girl. Her story is not what you expect….. Elyse Saugstad is one of the best big mountain skiers in the game, and we spoke with her a few days ago about the soon-to-be-released film, All In, from Matchstick Productions — the evolution of All In, and the experience of teaming up with several other big mountain rock stars, Angel Collinson, Michelle Parker, and Tatum Monod. We then talk about growing up in Alaska, and Elyse gives an update on Safe As Clinics, which is the backcountry education program she co-founded. And then we get into a whole bunch of other stuff, too, so just know that this is a fun conversation and an inspiring one, since Elyse is very actively showing all of us the value of continuing to seek out new ways to challenge ourselves and grow.TOPICS & TIMES:Packing for Portillo / What are you up to? In the The Athletic Stance I have made it my job to interview professionals at the top of the skiing field to sift out the patterns that have lead them to success, however that's defined. We talk about why they ski, what helps them stay at the top, social media, community, health, nutrition and a lot more.

Angel Collinson is one of the top big mountain skiers and based in Utah. If you haven’t seen her ski before its worth checking out she skis insanely aggressive lines on some of the steepest faces around the world. In this conversation we talk about her massive fall in Alaska, getting homeschooled growing up, her morning routine, and a bunch of other stuff. Shes super chill, humble and a super talented skier. Ah, Climate Denial, a constant companion. Climate advocates have sought for the silver bullet, that one talking point that will extinguish all climate doubts and dismissals. In this episode host, Peterson Toscano, brings in climate advocates from around the world and climate communication experts to explore what might be behind the denial and how to respond. Main Section Climate denial has distracted climate advocates and slowed down the public discussion and political action. As a result, climate activists and comics have gotten downright snarky and angry at people, particularly politicians, who are skeptical of climate science. Sharing insights about what they have discovered about climate denial, we hear from professional skier, Angel Collinson, and Chilean climate advocate, Andres Forno. We also get some good news from Bessie Schwarz at the Yale Program on Climate Communications. Peterson then raises some questions including, What if starting 10 years ago there were no more climate skeptics in the world? What would we be talking and writing about today? And how do we engage the 29 million Americans who say they are alarmed by climate change? As always your input and responses are welcome. Art House In the Art House you will meet Marvin Bloom, a comic creation who takes a serious look at climate denial. Through his playful meditation on the issue, Marvin humanizes the denial experience and considers various types of climate denial. He also reveals a weird issue that keeps him stuck in denial. Puzzler We received many excellent and downright inspiring answers to last month's puzzler. As an added bonus, Cathy Orlando, from Citizens Climate Lobby Canada (featured in Episode Two) talks about the recent success in Canada. After years of lobbying, the Canadian government has agreed to place a fee on carbon starting in 2018. Cathy shares some of the many ways she and her fellow Canadian Citizens' Climate volunteers engaged lawmakers and the public. Here is our new puzzler submitted by Chris Wiegard from Citizens’ Climate chapter in Richmond, Virginia. When I blog on climate change or go to public hearings on it, I often hear or read fossil fuel defenders say that "shifting to renewable energy is unrealistic because low income people are dependent on low energy prices. The cheapness of fossil fuel is all that keeps certain people alive." And Chris is right, poor and working class people cannot easily afford buying expensive energy hybrid cars and installing solar panels and the other alternatives currently on offer. So how might you respond to argument that shifting to renewable energy is unrealistic because low income people are dependent on low energy prices. Send Peterson your answers. Leave your name, contact info, and where you are from. Get back to him by November 15th 2016. The bums are back and they've found some cool new projects on crowd funding sites Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. Don't know what crowd funding is all about, well strap in and check out the podcast to find out.
You have to trust that if you are paying attention to the right things and your heart is in the right place and you’re taking the right steps forward, that you’ll be met halfway with the unforeseen unknown components that are the other half of things progressing forward….you can’t have too much fear about not knowing what the next step is, you just have to trust…. Angel Collinson I've spent a lot of time riding alongside Angel across the country, and every conversation we've had has been a powerful one (whether it's serious or not). Angel skis fast, but her accomplishments extend beyond the mountains that she plays in. She is kind, always thinking, and at the end of the day still loves to have a good time. In this cast, we talk face to face about why she skis, what she wants to do with her life, her fears and hopes, and why being a nice, kind person is the ultimate. Bio: Angel was born July 13th 1990 and grew up in the employee housing at the Snowbird Ski Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon Utah where she and her brother shared a five by twelve foot bedroom. Her dad worked for the snow safety department and her mom made their lifestyle possible by teaching in a one-room home school every winter, teaching kindergarten through high school to Angel, her brother Johnny and a few other kids. "Snow days" were "powder days” and as a result, ignited Angel’s passion for skiing. In the summers her family traveled for months and explored the mountains around the west. They lived out of a 1979 blue ford van that they renovated to make a "luxurious" home, which became their mobile summer base camp until she turned 14. Angel ski raced until she was 18, and enjoyed a successful career of competing internationally. Eventually her enthusiasm for big mountain skiing got the best of her. Her love for the mountains and being outside was instilled when she was young, and growing up in nature inspired her to protect what has given her so much. Currently she attends the University of Utah, studying environmental law and competes on the Freeskiing World Tour. In the summer she looks for every way to maximize her time outdoors – she rock climbs, kayaks, and even serves as a raft guide in Glacier National Park. For the passions she has Angel couldn't imagine living anywhere better than Snowbird, and she looks forward to the experiences that being part of the amazing big mountain community brings. This week on the podcast, we talk to one of our favorite skiers, Angel Collinson. Angel is on fire right now, and her current trajectory is somewhere up in the stratosphere. She’s just come off a win of the Red Bull Cold Rush comp, she was the first woman to win Powder Magazine’s Line of the Year, and she has two recent TGR segments that the entire internet is watching and rewatching. And more impressive than all that is how well Angel is handling the spotlight.TOPICS:Growing up across the street from SnowbirdHow a cute coach might be responsible for the success she's enjoying today"Women-specific" equipmentStudying philosophy in collegeFilming with Ian McIntosh and Sage Cattabriga-Alosa (and who's cooler, Ian or Sage?)Lazer Tag; candyHer new sponsors (Red Bull & Volkl)Self-marketing & social media (and her advice to those coming up and interested in becoming a pro)Her favorite audiobooks, podcasts, and more.
