"Those who risk their lives at sea do not invade, they look for welcome." With these words, Pope Francis admonished Europe for failing to treat migrants with dignity. Speaking during his recent visit to the melting-pot French Mediterranean city of Marseille, the pontiff lamented what he called a "fanaticism of indifference" at a time when Europe has been seeing a sharp increase in migrant arrivals. Some 8,500 people landed on Italy's southern island of Lampedusa over just three days in September.

Self-taught chefs win coveted stars from Michelin Guide

If your secret wish is to get a reward, not just family compliments, for your talents in the kitchen, then Georgiana Viou might serve as inspiration. The self-taught chef from the west African country of Benin, who came to Paris dreaming of becoming an interpreter, was awarded a star by the Michelin Guide, the bible of gastronomy, for her cuisine at “Rouge,” a restaurant in the southwestern French city of Nimes. She wasn't alone. A chef who studied literature, David Degoursy, and pastry chef Jeanne Satori, with a degree in sustainable development, also won a star for their restaurant de:ja in Strasbourg, eastern France, where the annual awards ceremony was held. Michelin's 2023 awards for French chefs put the accent on the regions of France, not Paris. The only chef to walk away with three stars — the highest award, reserved for gastronomic luminaries — was Alexandre Couillon for his creations at La Marine, his restaurant on the tip of the Ile de Noirmoutier on the Atlantic Ocean. Of the 44 new Michelin stars handed out, Viou's is the only one won by a woman working single-handed. Several other women were honored as part of a team, like Satori, the pastry chef at de:ja. Viou, 45, has described her cuisine as a mix of French Mediterranean perfumed with notes recalling her home country. She has written several books about Benin's cooking. Becoming a chef was a fallback plan for Viou, who came to France in 1999 to study languages at the Sorbonne, hoping to become an interpreter. Working at a communications agency in the southern port city of Marseille, life's complications forced her to change directions and, at 33, her second passion, cooking, took over. Viou learned to cook from her mother who had a simple little restaurant in Cotonou, Benin and got a lesson in perseverance from her grandmother. She worked her way up the chef's ladder step by step in Marseille, eventually getting recognition at restaurants bearing her name. She joined Rouge, in Nimes, at its inception in June 2021. Viou's Michelin star was bestowed for her “singular cuisine ... celebrating her Mediterranean environment and Benin roots.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

India now has the second highest number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the world, having overtaken Brazil. This is placing huge demands on hospitals and ambulances. The medical services, particularly in smaller cities and rural areas, can find it hard to cope, sometimes leading to what relatives think were preventable deaths, as Yogita Limaye reports. Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, Shinzo Abe, is retiring. His politically conservative party will elect his successor on Monday. Mr Abe has taken his observers by surprise more than once. Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo looks at the effect of those surprises, and at his legacy. In Poland, some politicians’ hostility to gay rights has become a flash-point in a culture war pitting the religious right against the more liberal-minded. Last month the EU denied funding to six Polish towns which had declared themselves “LGBT ideology-free zones”. Lucy Ash has been to one of them, Tuchow. Wildfires have raged through central and northern Argentina for most of the year. Apart from forests and grasslands, about half a million acres of wetlands next to the mighty Parana river have been lost in the worst fires in over a decade. This has endangered livelihoods and sparked concern among environmentalists, as Natalio Cosoy reports. Cap d'Agde on the French Mediterranean coast is home to the biggest nudist resort in Europe. But with France’s recent surge in coronavirus cases, how have the naturists and also the considerable number of swingers there fared with the restrictions? Chris Bockman went to find out. Main topic Since we are getting in the mood for our Cap d'Agde visit in August, we discuss our first visit to Cap d'Agde.Le Cap d’Agde is literally translated as the cape of Agde and it is one of the largest leisure ports on the French Mediterranean. When most people talk about Cap d’Agde they talk about the naturist village, which is a self contained complex which is fenced off from the rest of the town, you need to pay to get in. In the naturist village there are hotels, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, night clubs, bars, post office, bank and ATMs, launderettes, hairdressers and other facilities. Looking on the official website, in all there are about 180 businesses in the village and the population grows up to 50,000 over peak season. On today's Join Us in France Annie and Elyse take a detour into Catalonia because if you're going to be visiting the southwest of France, you may want to spend a few days in nearby Catalonia. This is especially true if you are traveling with children because there is nothing young children like more than a lovely sandy beach with warm water and gentle waves. France has beaches too, but the French Mediterranean is more crowded, the water is colder, and it's more expensive. So  the Spanish coast is worth considering.
