To the tubular and fantastical listeners of our silly little podcast, we hate to share the news that this will be our last episode. It’s been nearly a year since we started this endeavor and we have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Lots of great games have been played and many wonderful memories have been made - we truly thank all of you for listening to the show. For our final episode, we chat about Tetris, perhaps the greatest video game ever made, and Dr. Mario, Tetris’s kooky cousin that adds charm and multiplayer. Both games are just as fun today and will continue to be for all time. We hope you enjoy the discussion and thanks again for listening to us this past year! We love you all!Music Credit:"Pookatori and Friends"Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

All the way back on episode 14 we shared some of our favorite stories from the arcade, our happy place. Half a year later and times are still strange, arcades are still closed, and we are still here sharing our favorite arcade stories and highlighting three games a piece that we love. We each bring a few arcade games that remind us of our youth, fill our Friday nights, and have brought us joy for much of our lives. We love the arcade and while we can’t visit them right now, it was a blast chatting about our love of all things arcade during this second part in an ongoing series. What are your favorite arcade games? Do you have a favorite arcade you still visit? Let us know! Welcome back to the second and final part of our deep dive discussion into the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! We hope you enjoyed the beefy first episode where we discussed the developers, the quirky facts about the games, the move to 3D gaming, and of course, the first section of the game where you play as child Link. This episode is extra thick with twice as many dungeons to discuss, exciting new characters, and plot twists that will blow the top off your teapot. The latter half of the game has the creepiest moments, the best music, and perhaps the best ending boss in all of Zelda. It’s a wild ride to the finish and completely lives up to the hype of the last two decades.Do you think Ocarina of Time is the greatest game of all time? Or better yet, are you a naysayer and think it’s nothing but a deku scrub? Let us know! Ladies and germs, today we drop our biggest episode yet! So big, in fact, it’s part one of a two part series as we discuss The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It’s unquestionably one of the greatest games ever made, a landmark title that pushed 3D gaming and open world design to the forefront of the industry. It was a highlight of our youth, a seismic shift in what we realized games could be.You are Link, the Hero of Time, a sword wielding child from Kokiri Forest tasked with saving Hyrule! All the Zelda tropes are here - collecting new weapons, puzzling through dungeons, slaying massive bosses - but the incredible 3D design and emotional story were game changing in 1998 and continue to impress today. We hope you enjoy part one of our discussion, a deep dive into roughly the first half of the game, up until a major story occurrence. Thanks for listening!Have you played Ocarina of Time? We thought so and we would love to hear your thoughts! You can’t have a show devoted to retro games without talking about the blue bomber himself - Mega Man! With so many classic games in the series, it was hard to choose which game to cover first. Mega Man 2 was the obvious choice as many consider in the best in the series, but we wanted to choose a game less discussed and just as much loved in the hardcore Mega Man community, so we chose Mega Man 3. With a stellar cast of characters, some of the greatest tunes to ever grace the NES, and the addition of new mechanics, Mega Man 3 is an excellent game. It was the first time Jono ever beat the game and the first Mega Man game Micah ever put any time into. The game is extremely hard and a bit too long, but the gameplay is sublime and it’s just as fun to play in the 2020s. Let us know your favorite Mega Man game! Pour yourself a cup of cocoa and stoke your fires - you’ll want to get cozy for this year-end episode! The craziest of years is coming to a close and we thoroughly enjoyed discussing the games played and the good times had during these wacky months. 2020 was an interesting year (if we are being kind) but there is plenty to celebrate, particularly the twelve months worth of fantastic gaming we both experienced. In this episode, we each break down our five favorite games of the year. It’s a great mix of new and old, pixelated and pristine, a true genre mashup showing our love of video games across the entire industry. It’s been a wild year but there has been fun, love, and good times amongst the madness. Thank you for listening, we truly appreciate you joining us for this nerdy adventure. Does your brain feel nice and happy? Do you enjoy the constant, predictable flow of time? Of course not! We are nearing the end of 2020, the least normal year in our lifetimes, so let’s get crazy with an absolute mind-bender of a game. On this episode of Medium Retro, we discuss Braid, a game that will make you feel smart while also turning your brain into three pounds of pudding. It will bend time in ways you didn’t think possible and it will make you rethink every decision you’ve ever made. It’s a masterpiece.Created by the brilliant Jonathan Blow, Braid is perhaps the most important indie game of the last 20 years. Possibly ever. The time based puzzles, abstract story, and excellent art by David Hellman create a truly unforgettable experience that is a marvel to play. While no game is perfect, it’s damn near close. Which puzzles did you find hardest? How do you interpret the story? Send us your questions and comments and get heard on the show, we would love to hear from you! Put on your ninja shoes and sharpen your shurikens because we are talking about Shinobi on this episode of Medium Retro. You play as Joe Musashi, ninja extraordinaire and member of the Oboro ninja clan, as you battle your way through the Zeed crime organization to save your students. They were kidnapped and you must save them the only way you know how - kicking butt and taking names.Originally an arcade game, Shinobi made its way to consoles in the late 1980s, coming to both the Sega Master System and the NES. We played the NES version and learned after the fact that this particular game was unlicensed and, to be honest, not that great. It’s an interesting discussion of an arcade classic and the strange beginnings of Shinobi’s console life.Send us your questions and comments and get heard on the show, we would love to hear from you. We have gushed about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on nearly every episode. We played that magical game back in episode 11 and we can’t seem to shake it’s spell. We loved it so much that we felt shame having never played the original and it was high time we changed that. In this episode, we head back into Dracula’s castle and guide Simon Belmont through Castlevania, the game that started it all and helped pioneer the beloved Metroidvania genre. The game is brief and very challenging. Many aspects of the game felt immediately familiar to Symphony, from the memorable enemies to the atmospheric setting, but it’s much more linear than the open-ended exploration found in later games in the series. The graphics are fantastic, the music is killer, and we no longer feel shame. We hope you enjoy the show and make sure to send us your questions and comments. Here at Medium Retro, we love the shoot ‘em up genre, often referred to as “shmups” The idea is simple - control your character from left to right or from bottom to top and blast your to the end of the level. You gain power-ups, fight bosses, and dodge projectiles like a ninja. We’ve compared this classic genre to many games from previous episodes in the similar-but-different beat ‘em up genre, such as our episodes on Streets of Rage and Gunstar Heroes, but we have yet to play an old-school, genre defining shmup. Today that changes. We chat about the Gradius franchise, a horizontal space based shmup. We dig into elements of the franchise but our playthrough was specifically for Gradius III on the Super Nintendo. It’s widely considered the best in the series and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with the game.We hope you enjoy this shmup discussion! Let us know what you think about the Gradius franchise and let us know where you stand in the shoot ‘em up vs. beat em’ up debate! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." Doom is a wacky game. Neon blue floors, intestine lined walls, and labyrinths filled with monster closets await you in your tour of Mars and beyond. You take control of the appropriately named Doomguy, a savage space marine gunning his way through Mars and Hell and back as he fights for survival.Wolfenstein 3D put id Software on the map, but it was 1993’s Doom that launched the studio into stardom. Helmed by legends in the game world, John Romero and John Carmack, Doom pushed the boundaries of what a video game could be. Doom is vital in the evolution of the first-person shooter genre and helped pioneer internet connected multiplayer. It also caused a lot of controversy with it’s ultra-violent gameplay and demonic themes. That only made it more popular. Needless to say, it was a massive hit.The game feels old, the design is outdated, but it’s fun as hell and truly a revolutionary game in its day. Wow, we made it to 30 episodes! That’s almost as cool as winning a world title! On this episode of Medium Retro, we take control of Little Mac and steer his career from amateur to world champ as we discuss Punch Out!! It’s timeless in its simplicity, punching and dodging and blocking are your only moves, and it’s also outrageously hard. Seriously, this is one of the hardest games ever made. The gameplay is fun but the real charm comes from the retro cast of characters. Each foe has a unique personality and move set to learn and defeat. Entering the ring with a unique dance, each character has a special move that must be overcome. In between rounds, the witty banter is always entertaining and often offers clues to a successful bout. Find your opponents weakness, crush your jogs through pixelated NYC, and win your way to worldwide fame! What do you think, is Punch Out!! the hardest game ever made? We sure think so but we’d love to hear from you! Let us know what you think about this great title and send us your questions and thoughts. Join us for some classic couch co-op action as we discuss Golden Axe, a game where kicking ass is cool and wearing a speedo into battle is even cooler! You play as one of three characters in this iconic beat ‘em up, using melee, magic, and my favorite, running kicks, to fight your way to Death Adder, your nemesis who has murdered your family and brought ruin to the land!Golden Axe is brief, the combat is limited, and the enemy designs are very repetitive. But it’s still a great time and fun to play through such a meaningful game in the beat ‘em up genre. Games like Streets of Rage and Castle Crashers may not exist without legacy titles like Golden Axe progressing the genre forward. We hope you enjoy this fun discussion about Golden Axe and let us know if you’ve had a chance to play it! Super Mario Land is a bit strange. You can finish the game in 30 minutes, your nemesis is an alien, and much of the game takes place in historical locations such as Easter Island and The Great Pyramid of Giza. The standard Mario design is intact, albeit squished, to make the game presentable on the original Gameboy’s screen. Everything seems a bit…off. It’s a strange mash-up of ideas that makes for one of the most unusual Mario games, and while time hasn’t been favorable to Land, which is the first ever handheld Mario game, there is a lot to love. The music is great, the shoot ‘em up elements are surprising, and the quirkiness is hard to dislike. It’s short and sweet and proved that Mario could make the move to handhelds. Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." We have talked about our love of arcades at length on Medium Retro but today’s discussion has a twist on our favorite hangout - the arcade acts as the backdrop for a classic battle of good vs evil. We dive into the brilliant documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, where regular guy Steve Wiebe attempts to conquer Donkey Kong by beating Billy Mitchell’s long standing world-record. Wiebe is our hero, a family man and science teacher who spends his free time climbing ladders and dodging barrels in his suburban garage. Unfortunately, Billy Mitchell is a real-world bully who does not want to lose his only remaining record. He has a legion of lackeys supporting his continued dominance while he hides in the shadows of his Hollywood, FL home. King of Kong is a great film that was made for hardcore gamers. It’s filled with some truly baffling moments and an interesting cast of characters. If you like gaming, you will love this film!Have you seen King of Kong? Let us know! Enemies beware - there’s a hero on the loose ready to inhale your powers. He’s pink, rotund, and will suck you into oblivion. Kirby is not messing around! In this episode of Medium Retro, we dive into the much beloved but oft forgotten Kirby’s Adventure, a late generation classic that doesn’t get the respect it deserves. This gem was released on the original Nintendo three years into the life of the SNES. Kirby's graphics are amazing, pushing the capabilities of the original Nintendo, and the gameplay offers interesting and fun mechanics not found in other platformers of that era. It’s filled with whimsy, poses quite the challenge, and even offers an unexpectedly cool story. Kirby’s Adventure rules! What is your favorite power in Kirby’s epic adventure? Let us know! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to solve teleportation puzzles at the behest of a lovable but murderous robot? We thought so! Today, we discuss the genre mash-up Portal, a modern classic that melds first-person puzzle platforming with an innovative teleportation mechanic. That alone would have made a great game, but the show-stealer is GlaDOS, your hilarious AI nemesis who guides you through this mind bending science experiment of a game. GlaDOS is quite possibly the funniest gaming character of all time. The humor is often subtle, easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention, but can also be in your face and ridiculous. The humor is expertly written and flawlessly delivered, providing context to the crazy world of Aperture Science, your home as you puzzle your way through all 19 stages. Portal is short but substantial and has only gotten better with time. It’s a masterpiece. What’s your favorite quote from Portal? I know, that’s a hard question with all of the great banter from GlaDOS, but we’d love to know your favorite! Send us your thoughts and questions and get heard on the show. Our show is called Medium Retro because we want to discuss games both old and new. In this episode, we discuss the modern classic Limbo, the first game of many that might not be considered “retro” but are no less amazing. Limbo is a masterclass of atmospheric design that’s filled with ultra-violence and challenging puzzles. It’s incredible. Limbo was designed by a very small team and it helped fuel the indie craze from a decade ago. The film noir aesthetic, the “learn by death mechanic,” and the minimalist but shockingly violent gameplay captured a wide audience and helped legitimize the indie scene, especially on consoles. The game is just as good a decade later and it will be just as good in a 100 years. Limbo is short, powerful, and timeless. Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." All these means streets understand is rage--and rage is what they're gonna get! On the Streets of Rage, Jono and Micah take on baddie after baddie and use the built-in rewind feature on the new versions/roms to beat this killer combat title from the 90's. It's a top-tier title sure to enrage the player. Sega had a super lineup on that Genesis, and this is one of the main stars. It's a heavy hitter! DO BASEBALL! (that's a reference to Streets of Rage 2) We beat this beloved Beat-em-up with poise and grace, f-bombs, and a couple of beers. Come listen to us discuss this classic title, make jokes about reused sprites, and laugh our way through another classic episode. One day, we'll look back and pine for our days on the Streets of Rage. You are tasked with choosing an all-star team made up of only Nintendo characters. Every character, be it hero or villain or creature or man, is fair game. The only problem? Your co-host nemesis is also drafting a Nintendo dream team! Once a player is selected, their allegiance has been chosen and they are no longer available. Who do you pick? That’s what we find out on today’s show! We sit down with one goal, to draft the greatest team of Nintendo characters possible. Both our teams are filled with the heavy-hitters, Mario and friends definitely make an appearance, but both our squads have a couple curve balls, characters we love for various reasons and who bring something special to the team. So, who’s squad do you like better? Let us know! And if you happen to have your own drafts, send your results our way, we’d love to talk about them on the show! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." Zelda is certainly one of the most beloved gaming franchises of all time and that holds true for the Medium Retro crew. With several games in both of our top 20 games of all time, we love Zelda; however, even Zelda-heads like us haven’t played every game in the franchise. Today, we take a trip back to simpler times and jump into two Zelda titles that are not often talked about. Released nearly two decades ago at the end of the Gameboy’s life, The Legend of Zelda saw two same-day releases in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. There were many similarities between the games, from repeating characters, familiar mechanics, and many similarities between the overworld maps, but they were also very different. Both games had separate story arcs, the central mechanic of time-change vs. season-change made for very different gameplay, and Seasons was largely focused on combat while Ages focused on puzzles. Jono played Ages and Micah played Seasons, making for a fun discussion of both games. Have you played either of these gems? Let us know your thoughts, we would love to hear from you! The Run-and-Gun/Shoot ’em Up genre doesn’t get a lot of love these days and quite frankly, neither does the Sega Genesis. Even on this show, we have given short shrift to Sega’s most beloved console in favor of its console war rival, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. And the shoot ‘em up genre has barely been mentioned, let alone played, on our show. Today, we change that as we discuss Gunstar Heroes, showering praise on this Sega Genesis exclusive and hallmark of the run-and-gun genreThe game is challenging and plenty quirky with its color-themed cast and varying gameplay, offering up unique experiences such as board-game based dungeon crawling and Gradius-style space combat. The game is fast paced and high energy with humor sprinkled throughout; it’s a great ride from start to finish. And we must mention the killer pixel art paired with pseudo-3D graphics that are still amazing today. It’s impossible to battle the Core Guard System boss and not smile the whole time. We dare you.Have you played Gunstar Heroes? And more impressively, have you beaten the game without cheats or emulators? We’d be mighty impressed, so let us know! And send in your questions and thoughts and we will get you heard on the show. Thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy this discussion of Gunstar Heroes! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." Medium Retro fans, we got a special bonus episode! We decided to give you a free episode of Medium Retro Special, our bi-monthly non-video game show available to our supporters on Patreon.com. We hope you enjoy! We got a doozie of an episode today as we talk about a classic 1984 children’s movie about the impending death of your hopes and dreams and the joys of sweet, sweet revenge. We are talking about the whimsical ride that is The Neverending Story. We touch on the story beats, the characters, the absurd 80s-ness, and of course, the fantastic music. The theme song is an absolute banger to this day. We also discuss the darker moments of the film that make it a fairly creepy movie for both children and adults. Watching your favorite horse drown in the swamp of sadness is irreversible trauma that can’t be fixed. If you weren’t broken before, you will be after watching this movie.Jokes aside, it’s a classic for a reason and we both enjoyed viewing and discussing the film. Recording this episode was almost as good as shouting “Wee!” from the back of a flying luck dragon so we hope you enjoy! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." Wax your ledges and don your pads because we are grinding our way directly into your ear holes on this week's episode of Medium Retro! With the upcoming remaster of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2, we’re riding goofy in this lengthy discussion of the characters, the stages, and the soundtracks. We’re replacing melancholy vibes with melancholy grabs and letting the ska-punk jams and hip-hop anthems soothe our 2020 angst. The original Tony Hawk games are legendary with the perfect mix of sporting goodness and campy thrills, and twenty years after they released they still make us want to party like it was 1999. Playing through the originals cemented how excited we are to play through the updated versions and we can’t wait to pick up a copy and tell you about it. In the meantime, enjoy this throwback episode to arguably the greatest extreme sports franchise of all time. And if you’ve played Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or have any other thoughts or questions you’d like to throw our way, hit us up on social media or Patreon and get heard on the show! Our aim is to be completely fan-funded, so please check out our Patreon at mediumretro.com or by going to Patreon and searching for "medium retro." When you’ve been playing games for 30+ years, you amass quite the catalog of games played. We know this first hand as our combined six decades of gameplaying has taken us through every genre and ever console, the good games and the bad. In this first episode of an ongoing series we are calling “Obscurisodes,” we are each bringing a few games that we love, that we want to talk about, but will most likely never get full episode. Our list of six games span various genres, from balancing marbles to cereal crusaders, and while we didn’t get to play through all these games during the research for this episode, it was a blast learning new factoids and reliving some great memories. For 120 minutes, we riff through more nostalgia per minute than Joe Chestnut chugs hot dogs. It’s that good.Tell us about some of your lesser known but equally loved games! Our instagram is hotter than fire and colder than ice...it doesn’t make sense but it’s true. So don’t be afraid and let us know your thoughts and questions! Pokémon is so much more than a video game. No other franchise crossed mediums and caused an international fervor quite like Pokémon’s trifecta of card collecting, animation, and gaming. You didn’t have to be a gamer or a diehard anime-head to love Pokémon, it was something unique and lovable that anyone could enjoy. And by enjoy, we mean get absolutely obsessed with. It was a pop-culture hysteria that quickly outgrew its Gameboy origins and has since become a powerhouse brand for Nintendo.Over 20 years later, Pokémon is just as relevant as ever, with blockbuster movies like Detective Pikachu raking in at the box office and smash hits like Pokémon Go changing how we interact with reality. It’s safe to say Pokémon is one of the most important and relevant gaming franchises in history. In this episode, we spend nearly 3 hours discussing this iconic RPG, playing through the original game (though Jono played the Fire Red version) and chatting about the cards and TV show along the way. It’s a memorable and meaningful franchise that we enjoyed diving back into. What’s your favorite Pokémon memory? We would love to hear about it! And feel free to submit any questions or thoughts about gaming or nerd culture to us on social media and we will get you heard on the show! We talked about Chrono Trigger way back on episode 5 during our discussion of the greatest SNES RPGs we never played. Sitting at #1 on both of our lists was Chrono Trigger, a time-traveling tale of war, chaos, and frog people, and it was about time we sat down and played through this classic. For Micah, it was his very first adventure through Guardia and beyond. For Jono, it was his second tour of time though he barely remembers his first play-through as it occurred during the foggiest of college semesters. So for both of these esteemed gentlemen it was like playing it for the first time. This 3 hour episode digs deep into every facet of the game, including the memorable soundtrack and the amazing worlds you explore. We also talk about Akira Toriyama and how all of his art looks exactly the same. The first enemy you face is almost identical to Emperor Pilaf from Dragon Ball, same colors and clothes and everything...We’d love to hear about your experience with Chrono Trigger so hit us up on social media or patreon! Have some thoughts or questions you want heard on the show? Submit them and we will get you heard in our new Happy Hour segment. Time for another Super Nintendo Classic, a 3D platforming romp through the pseudo-3D jungles of Donkey Kong Country. It has funky music and even funkier apes, thrilling mind cart rides and barrel blasts. Donkey Kong Country is a true relic of the times with it’s strange graphics and standard gameplay, but it was all the rage back in the early 90s. No other game on the SNES looks quite like Donkey Kong Country. The unique graphics were it’s selling point but there is a lot to love about this nintendo classic; it has style, great music, and secrets abound. The later stages pose quite a challenge and the cast of characters is lovable. We enjoyed our recent playthrough and enjoyed the conversation even more! Listen in and let us know your thoughts! It’s hard not to get nostalgic thinking about arcades from the 80s and 90s. The greasy joysticks, the smell of cheap pizza, the cacophony of sound as buttons are mashed and games are won and lost - the arcade was a special place. It was a hub of friends and enemies alike and a haven to score-chasing nerds. This episode of Medium Retro is devoted entirely to the arcades of our youth as we talk about the stories and the games that filled our days in the dingy mall arcades and Chuck-E-Cheese wannabes where we spent our weekends. In the COVID-era we now live in, arcades seem more than ever a relic of the past. We miss going to our local barcades, sipping tallboys and playing our favorite retro titles, and we know you miss that too. Hopefully this trip down memory lane will make life in lockdown a little more fun and bring back some of your favorite arcade memories. This is also the first episode in an ongoing series which we are really excited about. It was a blast to record and we hope you enjoy it!Also, we are working on a new segment where we are taking listener questions! Thirteen episodes in and we have our first repeat offender - Mario! We kicked off Medium Retro with Super Mario Bros. 3, a classic and one of the all-time great games, but we both agree that the Mario franchise reached its zenith with the release of Super Mario World. It’s the game that sold the Super Nintendo, a true system-seller and quite possibly the greatest game of the entire SNES/Genesis generation.Super Mario World is the perfect blend of tight platforming and whimsical exploration. It’s a world filled with kooky characters and memorable music. Playing through Super Mario World in 2020 feels just as good as it did 30 years in 1991 - the magic hasn’t worn off. It’s a polished and exceedingly fun gem of a game that everyone should play.Have you played Super Mario World? Let us know! Allow myself to introduce...myself. I’m a blue hedgehog with bright red shoes and extra loose tube socks, I like to go fast, and my hair’s so spiky I’d shame Guy Fieri right out of Flavortown. I am none other than Sonic the Hedgehog!Today, the Medium Retro boys sit down and chat about the greatest Sega Genesis title of them all - Sonic the Hedgehog 2! It brings lightning fast platforming, memorable music, and incredible level design together to create a retro classic. Throw in new sidekick Miles “Tails” Prowers and a couple chicken bones and baby, you got a stew. But does it stack up against the platforming giants of its era, most notably, Super Mario World? You’ll have to listen in to find out!Where do you stand in the great Super Mario World vs. Sonic 2 debate? Holy moly, how did both Micah and Jono make it through 32 years of life having never played this legendary game?! Castlevania: Symphony of the Night blew us away. All of our expectations were exceeded when expectations were sky high. It. Is. Amazing. The depth of exploration is incredible, the music haunting and memorable, the art timeless, and the combat perfectly balanced. And oh boy, the atmosphere, what can we say about the incredible atmosphere inside Dracula's eerie castle? We were both genuinely floored by how good this game still is some 23 years after it's release. It is truly one of the great games of all time.Do you agree with our heaps of praise? So basically, we will be going through our favorite games ranked 20 through 11. Aren’t we clever?! Nintendo thinks about gaming differently. They strive to create new and interesting gaming experiences, innovative gameplay mechanics, and unique hardware designs. Over the last two decades, this has become even more true as they focused on radical new innovations such as the Wii’s motion controls and the Switch’s hybrid console/portable design, while falling far behind the competition in terms of graphical power and network features. Hardware innovation is in Nintendo’s DNA and in this episode we look back at the hardware peripherals of the 80s and 90s. Some were great (the zapper) and some were terrible (the Power Glove), but all are nostalgic and fun to reminisce about. We had a great time talking about these strange devices and would love to hear your stories too! Grab your friends and circle around the boob-tube because on this episode of Medium Retro, Micah and Jono drop some knowledge bombs on two classic couch co-op campaigns - Joe and Mac and Goof Troop! The shared experience of couch co-op was essential in early 90s gaming and seems a lost art in the modern era. While few would argue these two games are must-plays, much less classic as mentioned above, the cooperative nostalgia was too good not to discuss. And who knows, these aren't the most popular games so there's a good chance you've never played them. Listen in, reminisce about the glorious days of couch co-op, and then call up your buddies and play these games! We grew up during this spectacular decade and would be remiss not to discuss the amazing Disney games on the SNES and Genesis. In this episode, we discuss the classic Disney titles Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King. If you're listening to Medium Retro it's a fair assumption you've played and enjoyed a Mario game. But have you ever wanted to learn while playing Mario? Probably not, but that didn't stop Nintendo and Software Toolworks from developing a series of Mario-based learning games. They are obscure, boring, and not what a 90s child wanted to play, but Micah and Jono both have fond memories with two of these classic educational titles.Jono grew up playing Mario Is Missing, a globetrotting mystery where you play as Luigi in search of his lost brother. Micah grew up playing Mario's Time Machine, a time-traveling tale through great moments in history. We hope enjoy our surprisingly fun and nostalgic trip through these two unusual Mario adventures.
