former Donkey Kong recordholder

The tale of Steve Wiebe vs. Billy Mitchell is a funny, poignant David vs. Goliath story that goes far beyond video game scores. Steve Wiebe's story is a touching narrative about the everyday man who everyone can relate to, taking on a hot sauce king who happens to hold the record for the best Donkey Kong score. But like Bill Belichick, he's a shady sportsman who embarks on cheating tactics to win. You don't have to like video games to like this movie. Just enjoy the underdog story about a man trying to find something in life he can accomplish, versus the man who lives like a tycoon, worshipped by his friends within his little cocoon community.
Steve Wiebe is a world champion and former Guiness Book of World Records holder for Donkey Kong. He is featured in the documentary "King of Kong - Fistful of Quarters" on Amazon Prime.
Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 132 Sam is joined by Seb Patrick, writer, journalist, and podcaster. This episode was recorded in April 2020, four months before Seb tragically died at the age of 37. After talking to Seb's family, we've decided to release this episode on the 30th November 2024, on what would have been Seb's 42nd birthday. This is our contribution to 'Seb Patrick's Day', a moment on social media where Seb's friends reminisce, sharing photos and links to his work to celebrate his memory. Seb has chosen The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (79 mins). The 2007 documentary feature was directed by Seth Gordon, and follows Steve Wiebe, Billy Mitchell, Walter Day, and Brian Kuh. Sam and Seb discuss the colourful cast of characters, Seth Gordon's post-film career in Hollywood, and why there is a Donkey Kong kill screen coming up. Thank you for downloading. Once a season, Nat and Ben like to put aside the movie stars and special effects and IP driven brand management of Hollywood for the weird and wonderful world of documentary. 2007 was a great year for the form, so the boys selected two films that show the true breadth of experiences non-fiction film-making has to offer. First on the docket: Taxi to the Dark Side, a blistering condemnation of the systemic failures inherent in the prosecution of the War on Terror. Second: The King of Kong - A Fistful of Quarters, a plucky stranger-than-fiction look at the rivalry between two of the greatest old school Donkey Kong champions. Between them, they paint an unrivaled portrait of the USA in 2007, our triumphs and our failings, our terrible sins and our charming eccentricities.Timecodes:00:32 - Intro3:34 - What we watched9:08 - Taxi to the Dark Side35:54 - King of Kong58:12 - ThemesFollow us on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTokFollow Nat and Ben on LetterboxdEmail us at bttmpod@gmail.comAnd please, give us a 5-star review and share the podcast with your movie-loving friends!
Billy Mitchell was an arcade gaming superstar, as synonymous with the craft as Pele was with football, and he held the world record for the high score on Donkey Kong for nearly twenty years. Mitchell was the poster boy for Twin Galaxies, a company organising competitive arcade gaming and paving the way for videogames to become the lucrative tour de fource we know them as today. But in the mid 2000s an unassuming man from Washington came out of nowhere to beat Billy's record. Steve Wiebe had no idea of the can of worms he had opened and in the decade and a half since, the layers have been peeled back on an industry as obsessed with status as any competitive sport. What on Earth is going on in arcade gaming? Who really holds the world records for classic games? Whom is filing litigation against whom? Will Y0Y be dragged into a defamation lawsuit for reporting on the curious and strange history of videogaming? Listen on to find out! Y0Y is a podcast created by AJ Hill and Matt Hartless. Steve Wiebe is at a crossroads in his life. On a whim, he decides to try to break the world record for points earned in Donkey Kong, a record held by a shady figure named Billy Mitchell since 1982. What follows is a David and Goliath story that dives into the heart of a corrupt video game scorekeeping industry dead set on keeping Mitchell on top while discrediting all challenges to his record. We have talked about our love of arcades at length on Medium Retro but today’s discussion has a twist on our favorite hangout - the arcade acts as the backdrop for a classic battle of good vs evil. We dive into the brilliant documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, where regular guy Steve Wiebe attempts to conquer Donkey Kong by beating Billy Mitchell’s long standing world-record. Wiebe is our hero, a family man and science teacher who spends his free time climbing ladders and dodging barrels in his suburban garage. Unfortunately, Billy Mitchell is a real-world bully who does not want to lose his only remaining record. He has a legion of lackeys supporting his continued dominance while he hides in the shadows of his Hollywood, FL home. King of Kong is a great film that was made for hardcore gamers. It’s filled with some truly baffling moments and an interesting cast of characters. If you like gaming, you will love this film!Have you seen King of Kong? Let us know! Obsessive game competition documentaries. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss the Netflix+ distributed The Speed Cubers and The King of Kong (2007). We begin by discussing the despicable qualities of the people featured in The King of Kong, particularly Billy Mitchell, and the under-dog qualities of Steve Wiebe. We then talk about the filmmaking and crafting of The King of Kong, particularly the areas where artistic license has been taken, and highlighting the characters of Brian Kuh and Steve Sanders. We move the conversation into The Speed Cubers, highlighting the difference in spirit between the two films, with the more recent film being far kinder than the harsher older film - connecting to our previous episode on Catfish and Tickled. We unpack the focus of the film The Speed Cubers, especially around its lack of focus on speed cubing competitions, with a focus on the relationship between Max and Feliks. We then discuss the films in comparison to other documentary films and documentary series, such as Spellbound, Wordplay, Double Dare, Jesus Camp, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, Capturing the Friedmans, Three Identical Strangers, The Wolfpack, The Act of Killing, The Last Dance, Samsara and Koyaanisqatsi, particularly in structure and crafting, genre and place within the wider documentary film landscape, and the change in distribution style, between classic cinema release and Netflix. Our conversation then moves to the films' focus on the autism spectrum, discussing Max Park, the potential of Steve Wiebe being on the spectrum, with further connections to the Netflix docu-series Love on the Spectrum. We finish our conversation by considering both films as commentary on modern times, particularly each film representing two different philosophies around how to perceive of the world, with The King of Kong being a potential allegory for America's journey over the past decade, with The Speed Cubers being a story of friendship, community and hope for young people, regardless of nationality.

God lytting!
A special follow up to our Perfect Club episode about "The King of Kong" (Episode 61)! Randy, DJ, and Neil interview the documentary's star, Donkey Kong world record setter, Steve Wiebe. They discuss how the film came to be, if Steve wanted to punch Brian Kuh, and a whole host of things. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is a 2007 documentary that looks inside the world of competitive arcade gaming. The film follows upstart Steve Wiebe as he challenges "the world's best gamer" Billy Mitchell for the high score in Donkey Kong.
Merry Christmas! It's time once again for our annual "July at Christmas" episode, where we take a break from Christmas to discuss something equally near and dear to our hearts: Obnoxious jingoism! Also video games! Inspired by our discussion of Four Christmases, this year we turn our attention to one of our favorite sports documentaries. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters isn't just a film about competitive Donkey Kong. It examines what drives and obsesses men to lie, cheat and con their way to victory. Billy Mitchell can cling to a high score for twenty years through sheer cult of personality, but what happens when Steve Wiebe, a legitimate contender, emerges to challenge his record? How far will one clique go to keep potential newcomers away? And how can such an attitude rot a community from the inside out? Join us as we discuss these questions and more! Questions/Comments? Email us at XmasCreeps@gmail.comTweet us @ChristmasCreepsVisit us on the web at ChristmasCreeps.com! Intro: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Bad Religion) Outro: Happy Christmas, You Guys! The fifth episode of our season on the awesome movie year of 2007 features our pick for one of the year’s most notable documentaries, Seth Gordon’s The King of Kong. Directed by Seth Gordon and featuring video game champions Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell, The King of Kong premiered at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival and went into limited release later that year. The post The King of Kong (2007 Documentary) appeared first on Awesome Movie Year.
For as long as man has engaged in sport, another man has rivaled him to be the best: Red Sox vs. Yankees, Lakers vs. Celtics, Tyson vs. Holyfield, that one sports guy vs. that other one. But there has never been a more contested or sensational rivalry than the one that rages between reigning champ Billy Mitchell and newcomer Steve Wiebe as they compete for the title of King of Kong. This week, we boldly go where no DDG (drop dead gorgeous) girl has ever gone before as we discuss the competitive world of high-score arcade gaming, the hard-boiled egg-based diet of virgins, stupid kids who can’t wipe their own butts, and so much more! Listen to the episode having Danielle put her marriage on the line to lovingly stan some fucking nerd from Washington!
Connor and Riley welcome Andrew Lewis to the show to discuss the strangely operatic video game documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe build an extremely engrossing rivalry that outmatches many modern rivalries to date. Listen to the conversation as we discuss why this movie is not just about classic video games, but about determination, the human spirit, and the desire to be the best Full spoilers for The King of Kong & Rocky Films mentioned in this episode: La Vie En Rose (2007) | Dir. What does it take to be a video game star? How far would someone go to secure his place as the King of Kong? This week Morrison, Austin and O'Connor discuss the torrid tale of Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe, who the true King of Kong is, and some of what Austin know about Football.
Want a side of controversy with your podcast? Then you came to the right place this week! The guys discuss controversial games or games that have brought a controversy into the mainstream. We hope you're not easily offended! Not Fake Game News brings talk of Twin Galaxies being complete frauds and James mocking the idea of keeping records of old video games. They also bring up the notion that Billy Mitchell is a big fraud and Steve Wiebe should be the rightful Donkey Kong champ. Monster Hunter World having broken multiplayer is discussed, along with a new World of Warcraft expansion incoming, Nintendo still killing it with the Switch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 getting delayed, again. Lastly on Game Shaming more Warframe talk, but it's balanced out with Adam and Asad's adventures in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and James talks a little Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Happy listening!
Gaming's answer to Billy Mitchell & Steve Wiebe are back with a sideways glance at gem of a fighter - Tekken 3. Is it as good as we remember or another example of our squishy impressionable brains being receptive to anything that wasn't from our parents? We also mess around with the idea of the Tekken lot in a talent show. It's weird. We liked it. And what's that? A feature on the worst haircut in a fighting game? These lads are TEKKEN the piss. An example of how funny this podcast is. Right there.

Pulp Nightmare | Tales of The Unaccountable | Comedy | Weird | Movie Commentaries
In this edition of Pulp Commentary, we enter a seedy underground world, where the competition is fierce, and those who lose have their lives ripped away from them, drifting into shameful obscurity like embers flaking in wind. A coin slides into a slot, a machine flickers to life, 8-bit sounds jingle in a cacophony of whimsy. An ape stands tall at the top of the screen. But the real enemy for Mr. Steve Wiebe is not the ape. But an evil far more devious, far more cunning. One who will stop at nothing to knock the poor teacher down from the mountain he has spent his life climbing. The bearded menace wrapped in the red, white, and blue; the self proclaimed barbeque GOD, the fuhrer of high scores... Billy Mitchell. He. Must. Be. Stopped. Is The Wiebe the man for the job? Who will be The King of Kong!? Insert 25 cents here to play and find out.

It’s time to look back at the headlines of November and have Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Christina decide which news items actually matter. Kinect hacking, Arnold vs game ratings, and Activision playing nice are some of the stories we tackle. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow What’s been going on the gaming industry that’s worth talking about? That’s what we try and figure out at the beginning of each month. We gotta get through our Threesomes of the Week first as Cole has discovered the first great X-Files season before we suffer a TLC invasion. streetalchemist asks our On The Spot question: What’s your planned excuse this holiday season to skip out on work/family to play more games? Where we discover not only are we liars, but we are balloonists. Among a month full of releases, what headlines actually mattered in November? We rip apart the Uncharted movie rumors and give both EA and Activision props in the same episode. What a weird month. Luckily, we make it out alive even though Christina and Justin almost come to blows over King of Kong. Save Steve Wiebe!
