Let's take a ride on Falcor and fly back to 1984! Mark welcomes fellow podcasters and movie lovers Josh and Joe from Video Dropbox to reopen The Neverending Story and celebrate the memorable Wolfgang Petersen movie's 40th anniversary. They follow little bullied Bastian and model tween Atreyu into the world of Fantasia, where there are Swamps of Sadness, sexy Sphinxes, and lots of amazing '80s practical effects. They discuss the trilogy of films, rave about the Limahl theme song, and wonder what even is Moon Child?

We go all the way back to 1984 for tonight's Retro Movie Review; long before the Internet, podcasts, or Zoom were even a dream in the wind. Instead, we found ourselves getting lost in the pages of a story book...quite literally. That's right, for Murd's selection, the crew of Ian, Chris, Shane and Murd discover together the true majesty that is The Neverending Story! Two out of four Geeks watched it for the first time, while Ian hadn't seen it since he was Bastian's age. What say they about one of Murd's favorite fantasy movies of all time? Get yourself out of that video game arcade with its beeps and boops, get the theme song completely stuck in your head, grab Falcor by the neck and hold on for dear life, and try not to think about the subpar sequels...for that, is another story. SAY MY NAME BASTIAN!!!! (1:30:46)
CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Child abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, manipulation, gaslighting, childhood trauma. We step into 1984 with a true children's classic that was bound to scar so many young minds. Because this week's movie is a meditation on grief, loss, and how we intertwine with stories to help heal, and it's also full of really cool practical special effects. But while our director may have made the greatest submarine movie of all time, his ability to sort through the nuances of a really beautiful story was kind of a mess. For a 90 minute movie, this drags, and it's not only because the story is lost in translation. Yet the real travesty is missing the second half of the story, which pulls everything full circle in a truly beautiful, wonderful way. Grab a hold of Falcor and get ready to ride as we talk about The NeverEnding Story this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! It's Fantasy Adventure Month! Mostly because it's starting to get cold outside and we'd like to pretend we're in a realm surrounded by fantasy monsters, rather than the monsters we have to deal with on a day to day basis irl. Luck dragons fight the devil, puppets fight Ridley Scott, and the film industry begins it's long tradition of hiring people based solely on whether they make Tom Cruise look tall or not. Enjoy!

If you grew up in the 80s there were some movies that were a staple of your childhood. The Goonies, Gremlins, The Dark Crystal, Return to Oz and other scary-as-crap movies that would give you nightmares for years to come. The Neverending Story isn't quite that bad but, man, does it have some depressing scenes! A short leg this week as we cruise down Mt. Chimney en route to Petalburg Gym to take on Daddy, but first we need to make a quick detour through the desert wasteland of Route 111. Unfortunately, things go south after that, so if you haven't listened yet, prepare yourself both emotionally and sexually for not once, but TWO stirring eulogies this week. Eventually, we do take on Daddy and his suite of Slakoth evolutions before tacking on a little extra to the end of our journey when we went to visit Route 118 briefly before joining Steven Stone on a ride to Southern Island in what can only be described as “Atreyu screaming and fist-pumping on the back of Falcor”-like. We had to take our fun where we could find it on this leg. Oh, and we finally get to the bottom of where Tanner's Gulpin came from. You won't be surprised.

He shares with Stuart about the ongoing work to convert our Nevada properties into year-round hubs for bringing Burning Man culture into the world. So much more than an infrastructure project, Chef's team is busy upgrading Gerlach's power and internet, helping locals and staff develop skills, opening up new employment opportunities, and visioning a maker space for Black Rock City creators. They examine the art of urban planning. They celebrate tradition. They explore what's possible beyond our ephemeral city. They imagine what it could look like when Black Rock City spills out of its physical and temporal borders into places beyond the dry lakebed, engaging year-round with art, convenings, and teachings, and living life more secure and expressed. A young boy, overwhelmed with grief at the sudden and potentially violent loss of his mother. A newly widowed father, still struggling to cope with massive change, becomes cold and distant to his son. With his imagination the only thing allowing him to escape to some semblance of happiness, the boy shoplifts a valuable original print book from a kind old man's shop, and proceeds to hide in his school overnight while hallucinating a fantastical adventure with talking rocks and wolves until the early hours of the morning. Is this a horror story? A semi-accurate description of the life trauma that made Benny the mess he is today? Or a seminal childhood classic which features a flying dog-dragon that holds up about as well as a ham sandwich you hid behind a radiator 20 years ago? The Neverending Story is one of those rare childhood classics that not only deserves to be called one, but offers complexity, creativity, and a deep sugary nougat you usually have to suck on a Tootsie Pop to reach. From gorgeous set pieces, to solid directing and editing, right down to surprisingly deep characters, no amount of shade tossed onto it by two embittered middle-aged men can tarnish the shine this movie has. Yes, some parts are goofy, some moments don't really survive the test of time too well, but for the most part it's a solid romp down memory lane. Climb aboard that abhorrent piece of garbage Falcor, and chase some bullies into a garbage dumpster as we discuss such topics as: Benny had absolutely no idea that this movie was originally a German film. Like, German German There was not one, but two sequel films. The fact that you're saying “really?” pretty much sums up how good they were The character design is fantastic in this movie, far better than they have any right to be. Even the wolf, who has some awful motion effects near the end, still manages to elicit a sense of dread The matte paintings in this film are honestly among the best we've ever seen, and it renewed our sorrow for this lost art form Transitions, transitions, transitions. It's a little thing, but the movements between the fantasy world and Bastion's real world are smooth and perfectly timed, and really add to the effectiveness of the storytelling Contrary to what Benny spent the past 26 years of his life believing, the horse that plays Artax didn't actually die, and you're a fool for believing that he did. But not Benny. Benny is no fool We don't care how fondly you remember Falcor; he is a garbage character who repeatedly annihilates any tension or gravity the movie builds. The producers also apparently blew their effects budget on the other characters, because Falcor looks like a grade 3 production of Marmaduke It's amazing what an adult perspective can give you with a movie like this. The inner battle with Bastion - real life vs imagination - is presented really well, and makes you think deeply about the moments we began to drift away from fantasy Also, the Sphinxs' at the first gate have nipples Bastion, you have the power to grant yourself any wish you like, and as many as you could ever dream of. Oh, your first wish is to fly the crappy luck dragon? Really?

Musician / Production Manager Pete Falcor has spent the last decade working with club owner Bruce Finkelman at his legendary venue The Empty Bottle before moving to the much larger Thalia Hall and that experience has created an unquenchable thirst for all things music, one that can only be satiated by baptism in the holy fire of rock'n'roll and his band Planetsexploder and now ILLS, while also launching Black Bobbin, a boutique guitar shop that partners with other businesses that hopes to be a hub of music-making for Chicago.
There was a lot to hate about this movie but probably the biggest thing was the main character pairing his pizza with orange juice. Also, should there be a gps app that Falcor is the voice for???

We hope you enjoy! We got a doozie of an episode today as we talk about a classic 1984 children’s movie about the impending death of your hopes and dreams and the joys of sweet, sweet revenge. We are talking about the whimsical ride that is The Neverending Story. We touch on the story beats, the characters, the absurd 80s-ness, and of course, the fantastic music. The theme song is an absolute banger to this day. We also discuss the darker moments of the film that make it a fairly creepy movie for both children and adults. Watching your favorite horse drown in the swamp of sadness is irreversible trauma that can’t be fixed. If you weren’t broken before, you will be after watching this movie.Jokes aside, it’s a classic for a reason and we both enjoyed viewing and discussing the film. Join us as the Rehashers talk about one of our favorite childhood movies called The Neverending Story. A troubled boy dives into a wondrous fantasy world through the pages of a mysterious book.
¿Te subirías a Falcor? ¿Es el COVID la nada? Nos acompaña el GRAN Fernando "Ferny" Quevedo.

There are great years of cinema like 1999 when the films seem to redefine the direction of the medium. And then there are years that, while maybe not changing the nature of cinema, certainly have a lot of great movies.1981 is one of those years. Wolfgang Peterson's epic WWII submarine film came out in Germany in 1981 and changed the way many filmmakers constructed tension in war and action films. It changed the way people viewed Germans during the war because it portrayed the submariners as simply human. And it became the most popular foreign language film in the US for a very long time. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we begin our series on 1981 with Peterson's "Das Boot." We talk about the power of the anti-war story and why it works so well, even if German critics at the time thought it was a horrible move on the part of the filmmakers. We discuss the director and his cast, looking at what each of them bring to the table, particularly Jürgen Prochnow as the Captain of the U-boat. We go over the length and debate the worth of the additional hour in the director's cut — was it necessary to add it all back into the film? We talk about taking the tour of the Bavaria Film Studios to see the original full-scale model of the submarine (and take a ride on Falcor from The NeverEnding Story!) And we talk about the complexities of shooting a submarine film with models, handheld cameras with gyroscopic stabilization systems, moving sets on gimbles made to spec, and more. It's a powerful film that perhaps begins to wear its welcome, but we love it and have a great time talking about it this week. Tune in!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome?
