The UK chart-toppers continued for Stock Aitken Waterman as another two singles reached the top spot in 1989. First, there was Jason Donovan's remake of a much-covered tune. Part of SAW's series of '50s and '60s covers performed by their teen-friendly artists, "Sealed With A Kiss" had the potential to widen Jason's appeal even further, but was the plan to go for the parents and grandparents of the kids buying his records as well? We speak to Mike Stock and David Howells, and hear archive quotes from Jason about the decision. Next, new singer Sonia, Pete Waterman's latest Liverpudlian discovery, shot to the top with debut single "You'll Never Stop Me Loving You". Mike discusses the inspiration for the song, while stylist Sharon McPhilemy recalls what it was like to put Sonia's look together. We also hear from Sequal's Angie Vollaro and Maria Christensen about this episode's third single, fan favourite "Tell Him I Called". Angie and Maria talk about their emergence on Miami's freestyle scene and getting snapped up by a major label, who connected them with SAW. Beyond Sequal, we hear about Maria's time as a solo artist and a songwriter for acts like Celine Dion and Eternal, and the worldwide smash she co-wrote during her time in girl group 3rd Party.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

Brian Hyland was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York City. He studied guitar and clarinet as a child, and sang in his church choir. When aged 14 he co-founded the harmony group the Del-Fi's, which recorded a demo but failed to secure a recording contract. Hyland was eventually signed by Kapp Records as a solo artist, issuing his debut single, "Rosemary", in late 1959. The label employed the Brill Building songwriting duo of Lee Pockriss and Paul Vance to work with Hyland on the follow-up, "Four Little Heels (The Clickety Clack Song)", which was a minor hit, and the songwriting duo continued to work with Hyland. In August 1960, Hyland scored his first and biggest hit single, at the age of 16, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", written by Vance and Pockriss. It was a novelty song that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (No. 8 in the UK) and sold almost a million copies in the first two months of its release and over two million copies in total. Hyland moved on to ABC-Paramount Records, where he began working with the songwriting and production team of Gary Geld and Peter Udell, and further hits followed with "Let Me Belong to You" and "I'll Never Stop Wanting You". In 1961, Hyland appeared as himself on the March 6 episode of the game show To Tell the Truth. He received three votes. Hyland's other major hit during this period was 1962's "Sealed with a Kiss", which reached No. 3 in 1962 on both the American and UK Singles Chart. Another 1962 hit was "Ginny Come Lately", which reached No. 21 on the U.S. chart and No. 5 in the UK. Hyland's 1962 Top 30 hit "Warmed-Over Kisses (Leftover Love)" incorporated elements of country music into his work, which continued with singles including "I May Not Live to See Tomorrow" and "I'm Afraid to Go Home" and on the 1964 album Country Meets Folk. This approach was out of step with the changes brought about by British Invasion bands. Hyland's commercial success became limited, but he continued that in vein and had further hits with "The Joker Went Wild" and "Run, Run, Look and See", working with producer Snuff Garrett and session musicians including J. J. Cale and Leon Russell. Hyland appeared on national television programs such as American Bandstand and The Jackie Gleason Show, and toured both internationally and around America with Dick Clark in the Caravan of Stars. The caravan was in Dallas, Texas, on the day of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. To commemorate the event,[according to whom?] Hyland wrote the song "Mail Order Gun", which he recorded and eventually released on his 1970 eponymous album. From 1963 through 1969, Hyland scored several minor hits, but none reached higher than No. 20 ("The Joker Went Wild") on the U.S. pop chart. An album released in 1964 featured numbers that hearkened back to the 1950s including such hits as "Pledging My Love" and "Moments to Remember"—at a time when The Beatles and other British Invasion acts were drowning out American artists. Hyland afterward shifted into a phase of recording country music and folk rock styles. Songs such as "I'm Afraid to Go Home" and "Two Brothers" had an American Civil War theme. Hyland played the harmonica on a few numbers. Hyland attempted several departures from the norm, including the psychedelic single "Get the Message" (No. 91 on the U.S. pop chart), and "Holiday for Clowns" (No. 94), but despite their more contemporary arrangements, they failed to get much airplay. He went on to chart just two more top 40 hits, both cover versions: "Gypsy Woman", a 1961 hit for the Impressions written by Curtis Mayfield, and "Lonely Teardrops", a 1959 hit for Jackie Wilson. Hyland recorded both in 1970, and Del Shannon produced the tracks. "Gypsy Woman" reached No. 3 on the 1970 U.S. pop chart, making it the second-biggest hit of his career, selling over one million copies, and being certified gold by the RIAA in January 1971. Two of his previous hits, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" and "Sealed with a Kiss", were also awarded gold discs. In 1975, "Sealed With A Kiss" became a hit again in the UK (No. 7) and Hyland performed the song on Top of the Pops on July 31 of the same year. By 1977, he and his family had settled in New Orleans, and in 1979 the In a State of Bayou album, on which he had worked with Allen Toussaint, was issued by the Private Stock label. In June 1988, Dutch singer Albert West asked Hyland to record with him some duets of Hyland's hits: "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini", "Sealed With A Kiss", and "Ginny Come Lately". The latter song had been covered before by West in 1973, becoming a huge European hit and his biggest. Their duet of "Itsy Bitsy ..." was released as a single and reached No. 43 on the Dutch singles chart. Hyland and West performed on TV shows in Germany, Belgium and a Dutch TV special in Aruba. Hyland has continued to tour internationally.

This week I review the third movie of the second wave of the Summer Night series titled "Sealed with a KIss: Wedding March 6" starring Josie Bissett, Jack Wagner, Caitlyn Striker and Nathan Witte. I didn't like this movie at all. It didn't live up to the hype of "The wedding we've been waiting for". I didn't like the submissiveness that Autumn (Caitlyn's character) demonstrated. Hated how so many of the original characters from the series was missing, and commiserated how it should have only been Mick and Olivia wedding, not the added couple. I gave it one star. One of the League Two sides who'll be back in action is Stranraer – and later we'll hear the second part of our interview with club legend Allan Jenkins. First we'll hear about his move to ambitious Gretna. He'll tell us what it was like being cup-tied for the Scottish Cup final –why James Grady's dramatic injury-time goal was the worst thing to happen – and what it was like playing in the top flight after being told he wasn't wanted. But Allan is idolised in Ireland too. He went on to play even more games for Ballymena than he did for Stranraer. He'll look back on six years at the Showgrounds under the best manager he's played under – and the only one who'd kiss him before kick-off. There's scoring the goal that helped lift the League Cup after discovering his mum had been diagnosed with cancer. And there's his move into the juniors, first with Hurlford - when Auchinleck Talbot snatched away the Scottish Cup – and then with Darvel. This exhibit from The Music Museum is called The Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. In Vietnam, music provided a diversion and a release from “the uncertainty, isolation, and sometimes stark terror that reached from the front lines to the relatively secure rear areas. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. - - - For your service and your sacrifice, this is Vietnam War: The Music. - - - We close out Season 4 with a bit of nostalgia. I have been doing a podcast for 9 years! I'm taking a break from the podcast for a few weeks but posting old episodes like this one with Lydia Criss, ex-wife of Peter Criss and author of “Sealed With A Kiss”, her autobiography documenting her time in the Kiss camp. This was originally episode #49 from 2013.
The Australian dream. Your own home, a loving husband and two beautiful children all by the age of 30. That is the dream… right? Well sometimes, even for those who DO dream of exactly that, even when they’ve got it, it still doesn’t feel quite right. This is the story of Kate. Despite having everything she thought she’d ever wanted, she always felt there was something missing. Now of course she eventually found that something. But no one - not Kate, not her husband, nor her family and friends expected that something to be front page news.Email us: everyonehasanex@mintymedia.com.auFollow us: @everyonehasanex See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Sigh. Nice to see a Go-Gos movie. Wasn't one VH1 special enough? Again, The Go-Gos were not a band after their second album. FIGHT ME. They were a brand. They were not great instrumentalists, but they did not have to be. Their songs were catchy, but there weren't that many of them. They were fun in a B-52's way, even if Belinda Carlisle's Cher-esque vibrato on helium always bothered me. Still, it was nice to see clean-cut, good-looking gals make good in the MTV era. And someday I will play some! But you should know that there were quite a few all-female bands before them. Bands like Birtha and Fanny would have wiped the floor with them. Brian Hyland - Mail Order Gun (1970) Brian Hyland had three Top 10 hits in the decade. His first, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini", went right to #1! 1960. There was also "Gypsy Woman" in 1970 (written by Curtis Mayfield) and that wonderful September song, "Sealed With A Kiss". You know I love the artists who started in the pre-Beatle era and try to reinvent themselves later on. There were so many. In September 2006 Paul Vance, the song's co-writer, read on TV his own mistaken obituary, as a consequence of the death of another man, Paul Van Valkenburgh, who claimed to have written "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" under the name Paul Vance. The impostor had explained his lack of royalty payments for the song by claiming that he had sold the rights as a teenager. Vance, the song's true co-author, has earned several million dollars from the song since 1960, describing it as "a money machine". Vance also co-wrote "Playground In My Mind," the hit for Clint Holmes, and "Run, Joey, Run", a hit for David Geddes. Traffic Safety Tip - Loaded Brian Hyland - The Bum Is Mine (1977) Written by Allen Toussaint. Jacqueline Taïeb - 7 A.M. (1968) Jerry Lee Lewis - The Cannikin Clink (Let A Soldier Drink) (1969) From rehearsals for the musical Catch My Soul, of which I will go into more detail in a future episode. Let's just say I bought the vinyl soundtrack, and it's a pretty good Hair-era retelling of Othello. This is from Peter Guralnick, who authored the ne plus ultra bio (to me) of Elvis Presley: Picture Jerry Lee Lewis as Iago in the rock ‘n’ roll version of “Othello.” You’re just going to have to imagine it. Me, too. Because as far as I know, no visual record exists except for a few scattered publicity photographs. He played the role in Los Angeles in 1968. The show was scheduled to come to New York next (we had already made plans to attend) – but it never did. According to Jerry Lee, it was because he had grown tired of the actor’s life, six weeks of following the same script night after night was enough, even if, like any Method performer, he never did play it the same way twice. (“I never worked so hard in my life. I mean two hours and forty-five minutes running up and down stairs – it was a mess.”) Very likely the fact that his recording career revived at exactly this time, with three Top 10 country hits in a row, had something to do with it, too. No matter. As this rehearsal recording clearly proves, Jerry Lee inhabited the role, just as he has inhabited virtually every song he has ever sung. Listen to the leer in his voice, listen to the clarity of the message, listen to his delight in the lines. Oh man, I wish I had seen the show. When I first met him two years later, in the spring of 1970, the role was still clearly in his blood. “You know,” he said to me toward the end of my visit, “a lot of people think if you can make a lot of money, that’s what this life is all about. Well, that can’t be what life is all about, you know? If I can just play my piano and sing – you know, the proudest I ever was in my life was when I got my first record out, hear[ing] it on the radio for the first time.“ He meditated on that for a little while. “Well, life is just a vapor,” he said, winking at me, as if I, too, must surely recognize this Shakespearean allusion. “You breathe it in, and what the heck, it’s gone.“ Kenny Vance - Shuffling Up Your Downs (1969) Written by Becker and Fagen. From Wikipedia: In 1967, the songwriting duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen came to the Brill Building to sell their songs, and ended up knocking on Vance's door. Vance liked what he heard, and offered to manage them. The duo arranged horn and string sections for Jay and the Americans and toured with them as bassist and keyboardist, eventually recording demos and masters with Vance in 1969. He continued to work with Becker & Fagen until 1971, when he brought one of their songs ("I Mean to Shine") to Richard Perry, who then brought it to Barbra Streisand and recorded it on Barbra Joan Streisand. Take A Dip With Dinah - Kenny Vance (1969) Ibid. The Gass - In The City (1966) The Gass - The New Breed (1966) The She's - The Fool (1966) The What Four - Ain't No Use In Crying Susan (1966) Formed in Manhattan and comprised of Elizabeth Burke (drums), Cathy Cochran (guitar), China Girard (rhythm guitar) and Diane Hartford (bass). They signed with Columbia in 1966, where they released "Baby I Dig Love" b/w "It's Hard to Live On Promises" and "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" and "Ain't No Use in Crying, Susan." "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" is a great title. The What Four - Do You Believe (1966) Different band, same name. This one from Dayton, Ohio. The What Four - It's Hard To Live On Promises (1966) Traffic Safety Tip - Corpse The What Four - Whenever (1966) The males. The What Four - Baby, I Dig Love (1966) The females. The What Four - I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy (1966) Topper Headon - Drumming Man (1985) Ex-drummer for The Clash. 'Drumming Man' is a cover of Gene Krupa's signature tune 'Drummin' Man', as originally recorded by Gene Krupa & His Orchestra in 1936. XTC - This World Over (1984) L Ron Hubbard/Yvonne Gillham Jentzsch - The Golden Dawn (1972) Scientology is an applied religious philosophy, jerk. John Phillips - Zulu Warrior (1973-1979) Sensation Alex Harvey Band - Give My Compliments To The Chef (1974) The cover is a send-up of the big Roger Dean covers done for Yes, Uriah Heap, etc. I love this record very much. Alice Cooper was a pretty tame imitation/contemporary. This is the real stuff. Traffic Safety Tip - Lady Luck Frank Zappa - Little House I Used To Live In (1970) The Shadows Of Knight - Shake Revisited '69 (1969) ?-? Velvet Underground - Waiting For The Man (1967) The Webspinners (Ron Dante) - Theme From Spider Man (1972) Thee Prophets - Rag Doll Boy (1969) ?-? Tito Puente - Oye Como Va (1962) Original version Traffic Safety Tip - Bottle Tony Martin - Aquarius (1982) Pink Floyd - Vegetable Man (1967) Lorne Greene - Waco (1966) Traffic Safety Tip - Corpse II Winchester 76 - Buffalo (1967) Winston Cigarettes - It's How You Make It Long (1967) Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies - You Can Never Come Down (1968) Hot Chocolate - You Could've Been A Lady (1971)

Sealed with a KissJuly 12, 2020 For the past five and a half months we’ve been studying Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth. When we began this study on February 2, we had no idea of the things that lay ahead of us in the months to come. Who could have imagined all that has transpired around the world, and here in our own nation? In a very real way, the foundation of our global civilization is being shaken, and the fabric of our nation continues to fray. Paul’s words to the Corinthian believers are practical and purposeful, filled with exhortation and encouragement about what it means to authentically live out a vibrant faith in a broken world; to fully embrace our freedom in Christ, acknowledging that we have not only been freed FROM something, but FOR something. In a season of confusion and division in their world and in ours, Paul has reminded us that our focus must be on the eternal, not the temporary. This intensely practical study has been incredibly timely for us. The unshakeable truth of God’s Word is our firm foundation, even and perhaps especially, in uncertain days.We are wrapping up our Messy Church series this weekend, with a look at Paul’s concluding words to the Corinthians in chapter 16, which he seals with a kiss. I hope you’ll join us – in person, or online – this Sunday!

Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.

Download | Subscribe (FREE) In this episode, Rev. Gibson and Johnny Gwin discuss the story and lessons in the Palm Sunday Gospel. Through the dramatic reading of the physical and existential journey of Jesus, and exploring the Way of The Cross, Beverly lays out a roadmap to lead us through the coming week of Holy Week. We walk with Jesus from being welcomed by Jerusalem as a hero, to him self-emptying emotion and power, to his brutal death on the Cross. Do we look at the real self-sacrifice, shame, and suffering Jesus endured for us? What things in life do we do to betray Jesus? When are we like Judas? Like Peter? Do we show up for God using our gifts, talents, and resources to help Christ and our whole community? The Church needs to be seen as a place for you to give back (sacrifice) to your community not a "what's in it for me" mindset. During Holy Week and Easter, try to see Christ in the challenges, frustrating and ugly things in life? Could you see Christ in dealing with the most difficult people in your life? Perhaps your calling is not to judge and retaliate; maybe your roll is to serve those frustrating and challenging people. Listener Request Month continues and its becoming more and more obvious that you, audience, do not like us. You want to hurt us. And you have. We review Phil Nibbleink's Romeo & Juliet Sealed with a Kiss, a poor, POOR attempt at adapting the greatest love story ever told, (At least it was the greatest until Attack of the Clones came out). An Attempt by the way that he made all by himself. Literally! One person, wrote, directed, and animated this movie. ALL BY HIMSELF. His wife helped produce, his 5 year old helped voice act. Starring seals! No one is in it, and nothing happens. But if you want to get an idea of what this movie is like here's a youtube link to his previous movie Puss in Boots. Buckle up Kids.
